Full textTo date, early life demographic traits have been poorly studied compare to adult traits in the vast majority of animal species. Young individuals are usually more difficult to study due to their small size, their mobile behavior and the high mortality rate that characterizes their life stage. However, the full understanding of the demographic processes requires the integration of all life stages. This lack of knowledge toward early-life stages is particularly detrimental for long lived species. Indeed for these species, the immature component represents a substantial part of the total reproductive value, having a high influence on the whole population dynamics. Hence, such limitations affect the accuracy of population projections in the context of global change and more generally our understanding of life history trait evolution. In order to fill in this gap, this PhD project focuses on early life demographic traits in a seabird species : the wandering albatross Diomedea exulans. In this very long-lived species, the immature period lasts around 10 years. Based on long-term individual monitoring and capture-recapture analyses, we estimated early-life survival and the access to reproduction according to age and sex. We also investigates the respective effects of extrinsic (e.g. climate, fisheries) and intrinsic factors (e.g. density dependence, parental effects) on these parameters. Many relationships between early-life vital rates and environmental variables have been described. From a theoretical perspective, we tested several predictions such as the canalization of life-history traits and the existence of different life-history strategies within a population. In this work, special attention was paid to demographic variations at the individual scale. Our study showed that vital rates of individuals of the same age and sex could be very different. We have linked early-life demographic traits with subsequent adult performances and identified some causes of these individual variations

Full textI used a 30-year study of long-lived seabirds (black-legged Kittiwakes) that breed in Brittany to study the evolution of trade-offs between early-life breeding decisions, future reproduction, and survival. I first found that recruitment age and habitat selection were intimately linked. Recruitment age further influenced breeding success and survival trajectories. Furthermore, sources of observed (reproductive covariates, experience) and unobserved heterogeneity (frailty) explained substantial amounts of variability in breeding success and survival. Overall, intermediate age recruits (age 5) seemed to maintain high breeding success over life and minimized senescence in survival compared to other recruits. Even though individual fitness showed that earlier recruitment was the most beneficial recruitment strategy, the costs associated to delayed recruitment seemed minimal

Full textStudying agricultural practices and landscapes, this work aims to show the main transformations Roussillon encountered from the XIIth to the XIVth century, because its agriculture, breeding, fishing and hunting practices informs us on the whole societey. Thanks to the use of both Field Archaeology and written documents, the former obscure branches of the rural life, can now be better understood. All steps of production have been studied, from the field preparation, to the products consumption or marketing. It shows agrowth, which reveals a stronger influence of people on their land. This is to link with the deep social transformations. Farmers, lords and the prince, but also merchants, are responsible for a larger dynamism, which connects more strongly Roussillon's countryside to the Mediterranean trade. These factors, undoubtly, have consequences on the reintegration of the short-lived Kingdom of Majorque, in the Crown of Aragon

Full textWhy and how we use to fight in the late Middle Ages and during the sixteenth century? With what weapons? Following what rules or principles? The objective of this work is to answer these questions by questioning the theoretical and practical uses of weapons. The ones present in European society in the late Middle Ages and during the Renaissance. Three approaches will be explored :– First, the situation on the ground through the study of legal sources, particularly the remission letters in which the presence and use of a weapon can lead to injury or death of an individual.– Secondly, the theory of weapons through the study of Fechtbücher, Germanic fightbooks written by masters at arms of the fifteenth and sixteenth century. They explain the handling of various weapons such as swords, polearms or daggers. Also the foundations of the art of wrestling and fencing on foot and on horseback.– Finally, the contemporary practice. That is to say, the gesture experimentation and the attempted to return old techniques and tactics through teaching methods in a regulatory framework. The goal is to better understand the playful martial gestures of the past.Besides the contribution of sociology, this corpus is completed by literary or normative documents, showing weapons in non-militarized environments such as corporate fencers or martial and sporting events

Full textOur study considers the relationships between christians and jews in the Crown of Aragon during the Thirteenth and first half of the forteenth century. The legal definition of these relations is given by the Church and the contacts are disapproved by both Christiandom and authorities of the judaïsm. Despite the rules, men meet one another, and the royal power considers the jewish minority as an ally for economical and political reasons. The general context is the one of the Reconquista, which implies the need of trustful men. The jews play this role in the conquered territories and elsewhere. But during this period, the thinking of the Chruch is more and more exclusive and the mendicant orders preach to the jews for them to convert. The society itself is getting closed. The sources for this study are both religious (manuscripts) and from the royal power (chancellery registers)

The university world in this work is understood as a totality of masters, students and servants who were legally linked to the studium. We propose to examine the evolution of the phenomenon taking account of the troubled character of the political context which was due to the Hundred Years War, the civil war and also to the Schism. This study aims at highlighting the phenomenon of violence as significant to the identity of the university population. The analysis of varied historical sources ranging from the normative documents and didactic treaties to judicial data and chronicles, allows to reveal a large range of violent practices concerning the world of the studium of Paris

Full textDespite the important stocks of small pelagic teleosts along the Tunisian coasts, only ponctual data concern their biology and few regulations control their long-term exploitation. In other countries previous studies on small pelagic fisheries have highlighted their vulnerability and their sensitivity to over exploitation. Data on the biological paramaters of exploited species are required for rational management of fisheries. The present study is a part of a multidisciplinary research program of th eLiving Marine Resource Laboratory of the National Institute of Sea Science and Technology of Salambo concerns three species of small pelagic teleosts that are particularly abundant along the Tunisian coast : the anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, the sardine Sardina pilchardus and the bogue Boops boops collected in four areas : North, East, South and Gulf of Tunis during the 2000-2002 period. The following biological parameters were studied : sex-ratio, length at first maturity, spawning period, daily growth in length and length-weight relationships. The overall ratio of male and female along the Tunisian coasts was of 1. 0 for the anchovy and the sardine, and of 1. 1 for the bogue in favour of females. The first maturity occurred during the first year of life for the anchovy and the sardine, and between the 14th and 16th months for the bogue. The spawning periods took place from spring to late summer for the anchovy from autumn to late winter for the sardine and from winter to spring for the bogue. In this study the age and daily and annual growths were determined by ololithmetry

Full textFor several decades, the multiplication of the excavations of burial sets led to a renewal of knowledge on medieval funerary practices and allowed to operate syntheses on the subject at the local or regional level. In the North-Western Mediterranean area, a territory had never yet been the subject of a study on the topic: Corsica. This research proposes to overcome this observation by an archaeo-anthropological analysis of the archaeological material from recent excavations of three cemeteries associated with episcopal seats: Ajaccio, Sagone and Mariana. These cemeteries are characterised by a long period of use and a diversity of burials’ types. The main objective is, through the analysis of burial practices, to approach the cultural component, its permanencies and its evolutions over time. It is as well to highlight the specificities relating to each period at each site and to replace them in the larger context of North-Western Mediterranean basin, in order to underline any cultural influences or the formation of local traditions. This first level of analysis is coupled with a biological study of populations who were buried in order to characterize the funeral recruitment of the cemeteries, the recognition of the family or the social groups as well as the health status of the populations. All of these elements is, in a third step, replaced at the scale of the funerary space, so as to characterize its organization and its place in the landscape

Full textThis PhD thesis is mainly concerned with the European Bronze Age hoards (2200-800 BC). These hoards of metal objects have a high variability in space and time, as far as their content and frequency are concerned, which leads to several questions. The primary aim of this study is to show that these hoards are offerings for the deities and made to strengthen an unstable social reproduction. My argument is developed following two research axes, the first one focusing on the content of the hoards (statistical analysis) and the second one on their repartition in the landscape (spatial analysis). The use of an information system (a RDBMS related to a GIS) is at the core of this thesis. The main results of the five chosen regions are compared and then repositioned within their regional context, in order to tackle the social meanings of the hoards. A hierarchy of the hoards is highlighted and a diffusion of the practice from east to west is shown. To conclude the study, a window is open on the exchange networks

Full textThe principal objects of this dissertation are narratives produced between 1204 and 1261 in the polities of Nicaea, Epiros and Serbia. Previous studies, for the most part, stress the anomalous character of this period. In their explanations of historical phenomena, historians draw upon fixed modern narratives of the fragmentation of the Byzantine world and the independence of the Serbian state, both seen as consequences of the Fourth Crusade. These arguments are often buttressed by the undefined concept of ideology. Using concepts borrowed from narratology and Marxist theories, this study challenges that line of approach, as well as the notion of an unambiguous nexus between texts and historical ‘realities’. Narratives are defined as resolutions to material contradictions. Ideology is defined as a set of narrative strategies used to constitute the subjectivities of concerned actors and to construct their social space. Analyzing the narrative practices of interpellation in rhetorical, legal, epistolary, and hagiographical contexts opens up the possibility of reinterpreting historical actors, actions and social relations. Examining the narrativization of space in a trialectical matrix sheds light on this important element of sociality, which was previously usually reduced to a passive object at the service of nation-states interests. Finally, the study proposes a concept of heterarchy as a way to replace the unsuitable metaphors of family and hierarchy, frequently used to theorize the power relations both inside and between medieval states. This dissertation offers an interpretation of medieval societies, based on the way their members told stories of their social and political experience. Thus, it has two aims: to diversify the reading of Byzantine and Serbian texts and to prompt modern scholars to rethink their approach to historiographical practice

Full textThe breviary in the municipal library of Chambéry, Ms4, was made at the request of Marie de Savoie (1411-1469), the daughter of the Duke Amadeus VIII and the wife of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan. Each of the 106 textual in the book is marked by an initial with a religious scene; the margins, on the other hand, are transformed into a playground for secular motifs (naturalistic animals, Putti, etc. ) lodged on spiralling tendrils. P. Toesca and later art historians have distinguished two main painters in the book, the master of the vitae imperatorum, assisted by a collaborator who imitates his style, and Belbello da Pavia who appears on four folios. Although the manuscript has long been recognized as one of the masterpieces of Lombard illumination, providing both a fine example of the style of the duke of Milan's preferred painter and a display of naturalistic animal-painting, it has never been fully studied in terms of its make-up, style or iconography. Since 1969 the manuscript, which is painted by several artists closely related in style, has been embroiled in an often nebulous debate launched by A. Stones concerning the distinction between the styles of the master of the vitae imperatorum and the Olivetan master. The system of marginalia, however, which is quite exceptional in Lombard illumination of the period, has never been studied and forms the centrepiece of this thesis. The study proposes as sources of inspiration for the marginalia a thirteenth-century north French manuscript in the duke's library as well as a model-book on animal studies, then regroups and traces the history of the relatively few manuscripts that prolong the tradition

Full textThis thesis consists of five independent research projects, related either to random graphs or to evolutionary biology - and most often to both. Chapters 2 and 3 introduce two random graphs that are obtained as the stationary distributions of graph-valued Markov chains. The first of these, which we term the split-and-drift random graph, aims to describe the structure and dynamics of interbreeding-potential networks; the second one is a random forest that was inspired by the celebrated Moran model of population genetics. Chapter 4 is devoted to the study of a new class of phylogenetic networks that we term ranked tree-child networks, or RTCNs for short. These networks correspond to a subclass of tree-child networks that are endowed with an additional structure ensuring compatibility with a time-embedded evolutionary process, and are designed to model reticulated phylogenies. We focus on the enumeration and sampling of RTCNs before turning to the structural properties of large uniform RTCNs. In Chapter 5, we prove a general result about oriented percolation in randomly oriented graphs: the positive association of the percolation cluster. Finally, in Chapter 6 we focus on a widely used statistic of populations: the mean age at which parents give birth. We point out several problems with one of the most widely used way to compute it, and provide an alternative measure

Full textThis thesis deals with a series of thematic related to the production and circulation of pottery in Palermo during the 9th-12th centuries. In particular this research focuses on the unpublished ceramics found during the archaeological excavations in “Santa Maria degli Angeli” Church, known as “Gancia”, and in the Bonagia palace, both situated along the Alloro street in the Kalsa area, where during the Fatimid period rose up the palatine city called al-Ḫāliṣa (937). The main aim of this project is to offer a more systematic and larger picture of the pottery productions circulating in Palermo between the 9th and the first half of 12th century, facing the methodological problems set by their study and proposing new chrono-typologies. The interpretation of these data has allowed us to use the ceramics as an historical source, able to offer partial but new information related to the topographic evolution of the city of Palermo, to the social changes and to the commercial dynamics it went through

Full textIn long-lived species, an inverse relationship apparently exists between variability of demographic parameters and their elasticity (i.e. the relative contribution of a given parameter to the population growth rate). The environmental canalization theory has been proposed to explain such a relationship. Demographic parameters with the highest elasticity should have evolved in a way that reduces their variability in presence of environmental variations in order to optimize individual fitness and hence to maximize the population growth rate. To test this hypothesis in a given species, demographic parameters and their elasticity need to be accurately estimated. Using advanced capture-mark-recapture models, we estimated juvenile survival and breeding probabilities in the greater snow goose and we compared their variability to adult survival, the parameter with the highest elasticity. Our study showed that both juvenile survival rate and breeding propensity were highly variable, as expected. The juvenile survival probability varied in response to environmental conditions, with a strong impact of parasitism. An anthelmintic drug treatment applied to juveniles revealed a negative effect of intestinal parasites on survival of juvenile females but not males, which could be explained by a sex-differential investment in the immune system in growing individuals. We found that the breeding propensity also varied with environmental conditions but we also found some evidence for costs of reproduction. Breeding propensity in the following year was greatly reduced after a successful reproduction compared to birds that had a failed attempt. However, among birds that bred, those that had a success the year before were more likely to be successful again the following year than those that had failed, which suggests heterogeneity in individual quality. In those studies, we showed that adult survival was constant over time and independent of the breeding status the year before. Finally, we also found that adult survival did not differ between 2 breeding colonies distant of 800 km in the Canadian Arctic, which suggests a low spatial variability for this demographic parameter. We thus demonstrated a low temporal and spatial variability in the most important demographic parameter for population growth, which contrasts with the high variability of other parameters in the greater snow goose. Our study supports the environmental canalization theory as applied to demographic parameters in long-lived species.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to renew our knowledge of the "Logis Royal" of the castle of Loches and propose a restitution of its sites, its distributions and its decorations from the last third of the fourteen century, which saw the building of a first main lodging by Duke Louis Ier d’Anjou, to the beginning of the sixteenth century during which completed the construction of a second building housing the royal lodgings of Charles VIII, Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne. Still standing, the two main lodgings have benefited from a thorough archaeological study of buildings, combined with the analysis of textual and iconographic sources conserved, that allows to highlight the contribution the "Logis Royal" of Loches could bring to the architecture of the residential palaces of the fourteenth century and the royal castles of the first french Renaissance in the Loire Valley

Full textThe chivalrous group The Nine Worthies, which appears in the novel Vœux du Paon written by Jacques de Longuyon circa 1312, was quickly transposed into pictorial form by means of many artistic techniques and became a popular theme throughout the 14th and 15th centuries in the Holy Empire, the French kingdom, and reaching even Catalonia and Italy. At the same time, Italy was rediscovering its own glorious past by way of the biographical literary genre Lives, which Petrarch had appropriated and modernized; therein moral and political values were drawn from the history of Ancient Rome and exempla of Uomini famosi, i.e. Famous Men, the latter becoming the subject of murals painted on the walls of private and public residences. However four patrons, in Tyrol, Piedmont and Umbria, belonging de jure or de facto to the nobility, chose the nine transalpine heroes to decorate different spaces in their homes. Both traditions –the chivalrous and the classic, each one praising its respective models– co-existed in Italy for some decades. This thesis analyzes the fortune and the adaptation of the Worthies' heroic series as depicted in wall paintings dating from a pivotal period of transition between the Late Gothic and the Early Renaissance. Utilizing both literary and iconographic evidence we analyze the details that characterize the diffusion and treatment of the canonical group of the Nine Worthies in Italy, where the classical tradition dominated and was employed to embody the first form of patriotism that was taking shape there. The Worthies' topos, an expression of the resistance of the chivalrous culture which was present in Italy until the end of the 15th century, was a flexible theme that could be adapted to early humanism. The pertinent question becomes, are we observing, through the transalpine pantheon, the creation of a new iconography? This study provides answers while proposing specific readings of the four host places examined and interpreting these monumental cycles

Full textThe main aim of the doctoral thesis is the issue of the shaping the image of enemy-infidel in the socio-cultural context of the Latin Middle Ages at the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century. The research area is marked by selected written sources with similar genre characteristics (gesta and historia) written by participants of the First Crusade. The thesis studies anonymous Gesta Francorum, Historia de Hierosolymitano Itinere by Peter Tudebode, the Historia Francorum qui ceperunt Iherusalem by Raymond of Aguilers and Fulcher of Chartres' Historia Hierosolymitana: Gesta Francorum Iherusalem peregrinantium. The selection of these works, similar in form, content and time of creation, allows to narrow down and unify the area of analysis, indicate the earliest stage of the process of shaping the image of the enemy-infidel, and at the same time provides a basis for further comparisons

Full textDuring his history, the ducal castle of Moulins has been subject to several destructions and improvements. Despite this, it still contains elements that should be studied carefully in order to restore its original state. From written sources, one knows at least two major buildings campaigns. First one was initiated by the third duke of Bourbon, Louis II, in the late fourteenth century. The remaining main tower, known as “Mal-Coiffée” ("Untidy Top"), has been dated by dendrochronology around 1399/1400. A second campaign of expansion and redevelopment begins after 1488, commissioned by the Duke of Bourbon, Pierre de Beaujeu and his wife Anne de France, Charles VIII’s sister. This expansion will be completed in the early sixteenth century with the construction of a renaissance architecture portico, very early in France. This thesis combines both History and art history, starting from an archaeological reflection of the remaining buildings. The aim of this work is to combine and compare these different approaches in order to obtain the most comprehensive and exhaustive study of this forgotten site which play a key role in History
Robidas, Justine. "Enjeux poétiques et énonciatifs de la narration à la première personne dans les trois premières Continuations du Conte du Graal." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/24213.
Full textThe Continuations of Chrétien de Troyes' Conte du Graal are a group of texts that has for long obfuscated critics of medieval French literature. The type of narrative coherence emerging from these texts is quite different from the type we associate with the texts of the master from Champagne. However, these texts are interesting because the complexity of their textual relationships can allow us to better understand issues pertaining to literary creation in the medieval era. Not exactly a cyclical type of text nor a literary genre in itself, continuation, in particular for the Continuations of the Conte du Graal, contains traces of its status as an experimental practice. The Continuations of the Conte du Graal thus occupy a moment of transition in the evolution of romance forms in the high medieval period. Each continuator shapes, with the help of the first person, the specific form he intends to give to his tale and steers the reception of his reader in a specific direction. The practice of continuation allows these authors to find a tool for experimenting with the multiple modalities of romance as a genre, which explains the strong heterogeneity, at times disconcerting, found within this group of texts. This master's thesis starts with an exploration of the genre situation of the Continuations of the Conte du Graal. It is followed by a detailed statistical analysis of the use of the first person in the narration of these texts. The final chapter proposes a general interpretative essay of the texts that makes use of the conclusions drawn from the two preliminary steps of this study.
