AbstractIn the COVID-19 context, journalists and columnists frequently refer to literary texts in order to demonstrate that what is happening under the current circumstances has already been described by writers of fiction. The idea is that literature opens a window to the real world, that, in imagination, we can find a representation of factual events. Various historical and contemporary works of fiction describe societies infected with all sorts of contagious diseases from the bubonic plague in London to AIDS in Africa. Most of these novels can be read as allegories; they demonstrate how people react to illness, social panic, and isolation. They confirm that, although times are changing, the impact of pandemics on individuals does not differ that much. All these works underline that communities can only be based on a humanist approach and solidarity. But they also describe individuals that do not always strive for the common good. The violence in some of the novels is illustrative; the norms and values of social groups become permeated when people get weak or invalid due to a spreading disease.

Abstract In CRYPTO 2008, 1 year earlier than Gentry’s pioneering “bootstrapping” technique for the first fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) scheme, Ostrovsky and Skeith III had suggested a completely different approach towards achieving FHE. They showed that the $$\mathsf {NAND}$$ operator can be realized in some non-commutative groups; consequently, homomorphically encrypting the elements of the group will yield an FHE scheme, without ciphertext noise to be bootstrapped. However, no observations on how to homomorphically encrypt the group elements were presented in their paper, and there have been no follow-up studies in the literature. The aim of this paper is to exhibit more clearly what is sufficient and what seems to be effective for constructing FHE schemes based on their approach. First, we prove that it is sufficient to find a surjective homomorphism $$\pi :\widetilde{G} \rightarrow G$$ between finite groups for which bit operators are realized in G and the elements of the kernel of $$\pi $$ are indistinguishable from the general elements of $$\widetilde{G}$$. Secondly, we propose new methodologies to realize bit operators in some groups G. Thirdly, we give an observation that a naive approach using matrix groups would never yield secure FHE due to an attack utilizing the “linearity” of the construction. Then we propose an idea to avoid such “linearity” by using combinatorial group theory. Concretely realizing FHE schemes based on our proposed framework is left as a future research topic.

In the group’s Second Manifesto, François Le Lionnais writes that ‘structurAlist’ (his own capitalization) is ‘a term that many of us consider with circumspection’. Therefore, as a way of describing the Oulipo’s interest in structures without getting it mixed up with the method of thinkers like Roman Jakobson or Claude Lévi-Strauss, he proposes the neologism structurElist. And yet, in their analyses of the literary canon and their fascination with cybernetics and authorless texts, much of the Oulipo’s early work does exhibit unignorable affinities with the structuralists. Using material from the BnF archives, this chapter shows how the apparent distaste for structuralism is bound up with the Oulipo’s own moves into narratological—as opposed to linguistic—constraints, and moreover is not felt uniformly by all members. Some, like Le Lionnais, had a role in structuralism’s early development, while others like Queneau are acutely aware of the contested space that the two groups occupy.

This cross-case descriptive study suggests a model for designing online courses that supports TPACK development through communities of inquiry. Borrowing from the world of science research literature, a workbench dialectic inquiry model was engaged in designing a small group-large group dynamic. Mimicking scientists at the workbench, the participants formed relationships in small groups to develop ideas about TPACK, presented their ideas to the larger, whole-class group, then returned to the small groups to integrate feedback. This dynamic group interaction structure provided the participants with the space to develop their TPACK thinking in ways that supported the transition to cognitive discourse. Analysis of the forum postings revealed the complexity of the participant interaction and suggested that facilitating student community engagement supported the development of their TPACK. Course design details are provided. Further research directions might include applying the workbench dialectic inquiry model in other educational contexts and with larger student populations.

In traditional classroom literature, students of color are often left out prompting division, isolation, and discrimination among racial and ethnic groups. The purpose of this literature analysis is to argue the need for multicultural literature to develop identity and social capital for students of color. The literature analysis allows for research from multiple scholars to be used to argue for a particular action in education. The results suggest that an inclusion of multicultural literature demonstrates an increase in engagement, academic achievement, community engagement, and purpose. The need for multicultural literature has been discussed in academia for several decades; however, the implementation and incorporation has yet to manifest fully across educational programs, with stakeholders, or across districts. This review serves to illuminate both the necessity and strategies for multicultural literature.

This chapter presents an example of the way groups are associated to flexagons, along with several other groups admitted by the actions of tetraflexagons. These tetraflexagons yield rich group structures that are unexpected from such simple objects. Throughout this chapter, a generators and relations approach is used to determine the appropriate group corresponding to each flexagon. For each example, the chapter presents the structure diagrams, discusses particular choices in mathematizing, compares these choices to the previous literature, and reports the associated group. Each example employs slightly different choices in the generator assignment, which serves to capture different aspects of the physical nature of the flexagon itself.
