Abstract:
The objective of the research described here was to study the effects of the offset between opposing left-turn lanes on the turning performance of drivers with respect to driver age and gender. Left-turn performance of 100 subjects within three age groups (25–45, 65–74, and 75+ years old) was evaluated under normal driving conditions at four intersections of different left-turn offset configurations. The results indicate that driver performance can be adversely affected by offsets that are much less (i.e., more negative) than the negative 0.9-m offset. Such large negative offsets significantly

ABSTRACTExperimental studies have shown that significant carbon exchange occurs between bone-apatite and the pyre atmosphere during cremation, which can cause a calendar date offset between the radiocarbon (14C) event and the date of cremation. There are limited empirical data available to assess the magnitude of such wood-age offsets, but the aim of this paper is to test if they can be modeled statistically. We present new 14C dates on modern bone cremated in realistic open-air experiments and on archaeological samples of cremated bone and associated organic material. Experimental results dem

In recent years, the most common technique for radiocarbon dating of deep-ocean sediments has been accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) analysis of hand-picked planktonic foraminifera (forams). The mechanisms generating the age offsets are not fully understood, a problem compounded by the fact that the fraction defined as “la

AbstractReservoir age offsets are widely used to correct marine and speleothem radiocarbon age measurements for various calibration purposes. They also serve as a powerful tracer for carbon cycle dynamics. However, a clear terminology regarding reservoir age offsets is lacking, sometimes leading to miscalculations. This note seeks to provide consistent conventions for reporting reservoir 14C disequilibria useful to a broad range of environmental sciences. This contribution introduces the F14R and δ14R metrics to express the relative 14C disequilibrium between two contemporaneous reservoirs and

The application of 14C dating to such materials is severely limited in hydrologically sensitive environments like the Black Sea because of the difficulty to quantify reservoir age offsets, which can vary quickly and significantly through time, due to the dynamics of the biogeochemical cycling of carbon. Here, we assess the economic value of a short period delay “option pricing” in forest harvest with price uncertainty using a binomial option approach, accounting both for timber and carbon. Abstract:
Abstract In selecting materials for corrosive sour oil field environments, the materials of choice must be reliable and cost-effective. Materials have to meet criteria for corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in service environments for the required service life. Both age-hardened nickel-base alloys and cold-worked solid solution nickel-base alloys offer many advantages such as high-strength, toughness and excellent corrosion resistance. Alloy 028 (UNS N08028), alloy 825 (UNS N08825), alloy G-3 (UNS N06985), alloy 050 (UNS N06950) and alloy C-276 (UNS N10276) are among the primary so

The rapid mechanisms of sensitivity regulation following light offset are distinct from the more commonly studied slower form of dark adaptation and are called early dark adaptation (EDA) (Baker, 1953, 1963; Rinalducci, 1967; Geisler, 1983). It is well established that EDA is determined by peripheral retinal mechanisms (Baker, 1973; Baker and Donovan, 1982; Geisler, 1983; Hayhoe, Benimoff, and Hood, 1987). Previous experiments from our laboratory have demonstrated significant alterations in early light adaptation as a function of age (Sturr, Kelly, Kobus and Taub, 1982; Sturr, Church, and Taub

Abstract Conventionally, a bit is selected from offset well bit run summaries. This method of selection is not always accurate since each bit is run under different conditions which might not be reflected in an offset study analysis. The large quantities of data generated from real time measurements in offset wells makes machine learning the ideal tool for analysis and comparison. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is a relatively simple machine learning tool that combines inputs and calculation layers to compute a specified output layer. The ANN is fed over thousands of data points from 17-1/2 i

Purpose: Vitamin D is known to have a significant role in numerous body-system processes. Specifically, it has an impact on muscle functioning and, therefore sports performance. Chil-dren and adolescents have increased need for vitamin D because of its importance in growth and development, and it is evident that they are more susceptible to have vitamin D deficien-cy. Consequently, vitamin D status is particularly important issue in youth competitive sport. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency/insuficiency (measured as 25(OH)D concentration), and the po

Articulated tower motions have been characterized by rigid body mode of vibrations falling in the wind excitation frequency range due to its compliant nature. Dynamic response analysis of a multi hinged articulated tower platform to random wind and wave forces are presented in this paper. The wave forces on the submerged elements of the tower are calculated by using Morison’s Equation. The fluctuating wind is modeled with Ochi and Shin wind gust spectrum. The effect of wave age (young, intermediate and fully developed waves) on the wind gust spectrum is incorporated by adopting the wave age de

Abstract O&G operators seek to reduce CAPEX by reducing unit development costs. In drilling operations this is achieved by reducing flat time and bit-on-bottom time. For the last five years, we have leveraged data generated by drilling operations and machine learning advancements in drilling operations. This work is focused on field test results using a real-time global Rate of Penetration (ROP) optimization solution, reducing lost time from sub-optimal ROPs. These tests were conducted on offshore drilling operations in West Africa and Malaysia, where live recommendations provided by the o

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building blocks: The ultimate aim should be to build rich, detailed and testable narratives situated within a European context, and addressing phenomena from the longue durée to the short-term over international to local scales. Chronological control is essential to this and effective dating strategies are required to enable generation-level analysis. The ‘serendipity factor’ of archaeological work must be enhanced by recognising and getting the most out of information-rich sites as they appear. o There i

Abstract:
Using survival analysis, this paper investigates student- and household-level factors that affect the hazard and incidence of exits among college-age students who have ever been enrolled in college. The paper has limitations as it focuses solely on school attendance, the closest available indicator of enrollment patterns and, thus, attrition. Despite this, the results offer insights into the covariates affecting the hazard and incidence of exits. The paper 1) provides directions to address issues arising from individual- and household-level vulnerabilities and 2) suggests ways to improve the d

This project aimed to research the effectiveness of Australian age discrimination laws. While demographic ageing necessitates extending working lives, few question the effectiveness of Australian age discrimination laws in supporting this ambition. This project drew on mixed methods and comparative UK experiences to offer empirical and theoretical insights into Australian age discrimination law. It sought to create a normative model for legal reform in Australia, to inform public policy and debate and improve responses to demographic ageing, providing economic, health and social benefits.

Using Australian tax and survey data, we exploit discrete eligibility cut-offs to estimate the effect of several business investment tax breaks, including tax credits and instant asset write-offs, implemented over the past 15 years. Policies implemented during the global financial crisis increased investment. Responses are larger for unincorporated businesses, possibly reflecting reduced efficacy of investment stimulus under Australia's dividend imputation system. However, we find mostly no evidence of an effect for other investment policies, including those implemented to address the COVID-19
