Abstract:

The ageing of polymer insulation occurs under long-term exposure to high electric fields and has attracted research due its relevance to high voltage insulation. In this work, polymers that have been electrically aged via a number of methods have been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Abstract:

The physical characteristics and reactivity of a number of commercially available samples of calcium oxide and hydroxide were investigated. 'Fresh' and 'aged' (Le. exposed to the atmosphere) samples were characterised by Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy, Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis, Nitrogen Adsorption, Water Adsorption, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Microprobe Analysis. From this slight differences in the 'fresh' samples were found to be due to various degrees of atmospheric ageing. The main process involved in the ageing process was confirmed to be carbonatation (or carbonation).

Polyurethane (PUR) is one of the most difficult synthetic polymers to preserve. The main aim of this research is to assist PUR condition assessment on historical objects and define storage conditions for this perishable material (20–50 years).
