Agency cost analysis is a fundamental aspect of Anglo-American company law theory. Within the company three types are said to exist: director/shareholder, majority/ minority and firm/outside world. Whilst law is, doctrinally, consistent at mitigating the first of these (the paradigmatic corporate agency cost), it fails to mitigate the second. Several features of UK company law exacerbate this agency cost, which is felt most acutely in private companies. Ostensible protections for the minority fail to mitigate these issues. This raises questions for company law theory: should law provide additi

Abstract The behavioral agency theory verifies the relationship between company executives, CEOs, and managers, and their decision-making within the firm. The mechanisms of governance and the forms of remuneration are instruments that monitor internal members avoiding risks that potentially harm the organization’s valuation. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has been tracking small and micro Food Business Operator (FBO) attitudes towards food-related topics, and trust in the FSA and food system, since 2018. This has helped inform engagement and intervention activity targeted at businesses with fewer than 50 staff. The survey was initially developed to assess the perceived impact of changes as a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU), and the Achieving Business Compliance (ABC) programme, which aims to modernise the regulation of food businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Since then, it has

Choice and consumption of food is affected by a range of factors and dietary choices can change over time at both an individual and population level. One behaviour to have changed over the last few years is the purchasing of plant-based foods. UK sales of meat-free and plant-based dairy products have roughly doubled between 2016 and 2020 and in 2020 were worth close to £600m each (Glotz, 2021; Wunsch, 2021). Food Standards Agency (FSA) data from 2022 found that 32% of respondents reported eating meat alternatives in the past, although the majority (66%) are not eating them frequently (Armstron

Countries with nuclear facilities are considering ways to safely store radioactiveleftovers from their nuclear activities over long timescales, including spentnuclear fuel. In Sweden, this work has come relatively far with the constructionphase now beginning for a deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel at Forsmark. In parallel to the development of storage technologies, work is being carried out internationally to develop ways of communicating the long-term hazards of the radioactive remains to future generations. One such approach for communicating information about repositories an

Events such as the failure and rescue of Credit Suisse and the fallout of Silicon Valley Bank re-surfaces the old saying that prudential regulators should always favor banking concentration to improve financial stability, putting monetary authorities in opposition to competition authorities. In this paper, we want to switch gears and propose a framework to analyze monetary authorities' role in fostering competition. Then, we go through the case study of Brazil's financial system regulators and compare them with Brazil's competition authority's role and the importance of inter-agency cooperatio

This paper focuses on the implementation of corporate sustainability, or Environment, Social and Governance, reporting. The introduction from 2023 of mandatory reporting is a key milestone in sustainability. Adopting a comparative case method, we identify as related case studies Materiality (in reporting), Transition (in corporate strategy), and Stewardship (in fund management). We compare these by applying the theory-led themes of system openness, the agency or power of coalitions in producing and acting upon reports, contests in the qualification of key data, and through business exchanges r

We provide a toolkit for efficient online estimation of heterogeneous agent (HA) New Keynesian (NK) models based on Sequential Monte Carlo methods. We use this toolkit to compare the out-of-sample forecasting accuracy of a prominent HANK model, Bayer et al. (2022), to that of the representative agent (RA) NK model of Smets and Wouters (2007, SW). We find that HANK’s accuracy for real activity variables is notably inferior to that of SW. The results for consumption in particular are disappointing since the main difference between RANK and HANK is the replacement of the RA Euler equation with th

Abstract:
We argue that deep learning provides a promising approach to addressing the curse of dimensionality in quantitative economics. We begin by exploring the unique challenges involved in solving dynamic equilibrium models, particularly the feedback loop between individual agents’ decisions and the aggregate consistency conditions required to achieve equilibrium. We then introduce deep neural networks and demonstrate their application by solving the stochastic neoclassical growth model. Next, we compare deep neural networks with traditional solution methods in quantitative economics. We conclude wi
