Hellström, Hanna, and Leiva Godoy Martin.
Full textThe aim of this study is to examine Nyheter24 campaign about internethate to understand its compostion and to identify its different components. To successfully identify the campaigns compostion it is necessary to see what different type of journalistic texts are featured in the campaign and which ones are overrepresented. To see in which way Nyheter24 writes about internehate ten texts will be studied thoroughly to see which frames reoccur in these texts. Furthermore the essay will identify which frames regarding internehate reoccur in the campaign. With the help of the aim of the study, two research questions have emerged: 1) How is the No Hate campaign structured? 2) In what way does Nyheter24 write about internethate in their No Hate campaign? The research questions will be answered by a combination of two different methods. A quantitative content analysis and a qualitative textanalysis. The combination of these two methods will be usefull to answer the research questions since they will give an overlook of the campaign material and then a deeper understanding of the texts content. The result will be studied with help of the agenda setting theory and its second level. The result of the study show that Nyheter24 has primarily chosen to focus on the authour’s personal opinion regarding internethate and the emotional impact internehate has. This is showed by the usage of words connected to feelings and by personal stories surrounding internethate. This is combined with statistics and facts and this type of information is mainly used as a complement to the other two categories

Full textThis paper aims at analyzing the articles about mafia published in the present-day dailies of the Northern, Southern and Central Italy and revealing the presentation of the mafia phenomena like one of the Italy’s image and self image forming assumption and revealing the differences of the phenomena presentation in the different parts of the State. The main sources for this thesis are the articles concerning mafia published in the Italian dailies “Corriere della Sera”, “La Repubblica” and Il Mattino” covering the period from the 1st of January, till the 31st of December, 2007. It was hypothesized that being a part of the state’s identity, mafia doesn’t have tangible influence on Italian self image but because of its existence, the dailies positioned image of the State is negatively influenced. Content analysis quantitative and qualitative, genre analysis and scientific literature analysis methods were used for the research. The hypothesis was proven and some other facts regarding an image and a self image of Italy were discovered.
The purpose of this study was to explore the frames and messages, issue salience, and communication preferences agricultural producers in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas use and accept related to climate change and the impacts of a changing climate. It was of additional interest to explore the climate-change beliefs and preferred agricultural media sources for climate and climate change information. Specific research objectives to guide the study were RO1: describe the level of issue salience agricultural producers have related to climate change; RO2: investigate frames and messages agricultural producers prefer in reference to the scientifically designated phenomena of climate change and impacts; and RO3: identify the agricultural media and information channels agricultural producers use for climate change. Based on findings in previous research, one hypothesis was developed: H1: agricultural producers in the Southern Plains Regional Climate Hub area will be located within the audience segment groups of the concerned and the cautious as identified in the Six America’s (2012) study. An Internet survey was distributed to producers in Kansas, which was open from March 3 to March 14, 2016, with 158 responses to the survey. Agenda-Setting Theory served as the basis for the study including the tenants of issue salience and framing in relation to climate change. The study found that the majority (n = 158, 64.92%) of producers believed that climate change was occurring, however, the causes were still contested. The study identified that higher levels of risk perception and education level were linked to belief in anthropogenic climate change (ACC). Primarily, the study found that loss framing was most effective in communicating the impacts of climate change. Terminology and distance framing were less important in message framing. Regional and university publications were cited most frequently by producers as sources of climate and climate-change information and overall use of agricultural media publications was linked to higher levels of belief in ACC. Users of business reports and TV had the highest mean climate-change belief; non-users had the lowest. Audience segments aligned with cautious and concerned Six America’s (2013) audience segment group, which indicated a shift towards accepting climate change among agricultural producers.

Full textOver the past decades, sustainability-related subjects have become more significant, both in science and in popular science. Previous research shows that sustainability reports and sustainability work are usually studied from a business perspective. Media is an important stakeholder for businesses and is often one of the main intermediator between companies and its other stakeholders, making its reporting valuable to both parties. We have therefore chosen to adapt a stakeholder perspective that of the media is the main focus. The purpose of this study is to throughout a stakeholder perspective contribute knowledge about the role of media as a critical scrutinizer in the reporting of sustainability reports and sustainability work. The result shows that media does not take on the role as a critical scrutinizer to the fullest since the reporting is not particularly extensive. We have conducted a qualitative content analysis of popular science articles based on an abductive approach. We applied a cross-sectional design in our qualitative methodology. Our analysis can be compared to the thematic analysis, since we created themes with associated subcategories to encode our material. We based the study on three newspapers to capture the variation in the way media communicates. We adopted an interpretative approach with inspiration from the hermeneutical perspective. Our analysis model was developed based on the theoretical frame of reference based on our literature review and theories. Our research shows that news articles generally weakens the legitimacy regarding the current company. The news articles concern both general and specific areas linked to sustainability and usually include impartial voices that comment on the texts. Furthermore, we can find that the search for news articles based on our criteria generated fewer hits than we expected. In addition to this, the media coverage of sustainability reports and work is far less extensive than expected. In particular, the contribution from media on sustainability reporting is almost non-existent. Thus, we can demonstrate that the role of media as a critical scrutinizer in the reporting of sustainability reports and sustainability work in the present is negligible.

Full textThis study analyses media representations of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in two Ugandan daily English newspapers. FGM/C is recognized by the World Health Organization as an extreme form of violation of the rights, health and integrity of women and girls. In Uganda, although the overall prevalence of FGM/C is 0.3 percent of the population, FGM/C remains a harmful practice that constitutes a serious threat to the health of women and girls in communities that practice it. Despite existence of a national legal and policy framework that discourages FGM/C, progress in the eradication of the practice remains slow.

This thesis aimed to analyze the actors performance in Financial Inclusion agendasetting process in Brazil, focusing on analysis of (1) how actors articulated themselves in defense of their ideas and interests in conclusive process of a public policy, and (2) what non-human elements influenced the agenda-setting process. Actor-Network Theory was used as a theoretical lens, since it is understood that the agenda-setting can be taken through a continuous process of associations between different mediators called actants (human and non-human). The research was guided by qualitative research procedures, it used primary data (semi-structured interviews) and secondary data (laws, decrees, regulations, reports, minutes of Financial Inclusion Forums, and others). Interviews were carried out with 19 participants using snowball technique, between October and December 2016. Data were tested through content analysis using Atlas TI Software. The agenda of Financial Inclusion in Brazil is the result of an incremental process, which was attended by a wide range of actors (government, market, developers and scholars and international actors) that was influenced by some non-human elements (macro-actors). The dynamics of Financial Inclusion agenda-setting process in Brazil was analyzed through four phases of translation, presented by Callon (1986). During these four phases, it was possible: (problematization) to identify the identity of the actors who acted in Financial Inclusion agenda-setting process, in which the BCB is the focal actor of this process, as well as the Obligatory Passage Point (OPP), that was the union of efforts searching for solutions to the exclusion of low income population; (interessement) to emphasize the articulation process of network relations for financial inclusion, originated from First Financial Inclusion Forum; (enrolment) to emphasize cooperation among actors, which aimed to catalyze efforts towards a common goal, and searched to play their roles, within their abilities; and (mobilization) to show actors efforts as representative entities of public interest.

Full textThe thesis of this work is that some American political blogs are not only aform of citizen journalism but also assets during elections. We have three objectives in the present work : demonstrating not only the agenda setting power of political and current event blogs but also its legitimacy as aform ofpost modernjournalism in light of what itproduces (news staries, reports...) and its values. This thesis also aims to show the mobilizing capabilities of political blogs via an analysis of Howard Dean's cyber campaign during the 2003 democratic primaries in anticipation of the 2004 presidential campaign. To undertake this work we will resort to three theories: the uses and gratifications theory that describes the reasons whypeople are attracted to aparticular media and the satisfaction they derive from it. Network theory that explains the formation and the functioning of networks. ltproved helpful to grasp the structure of political blogs and the way they manage to sway . the work of mainstream media. Eventually Agenda setting theory made easier the analysis of mainstream media's influence on interpersonal conversations and the transposition of this mode! on the fashion with which current events and political blogs influence mainstream media's coverage

Full textThe aim of this research has been to investigate how during 2018 media have described causes of female prostitution and how these descriptions relate to earlier research on female prostitution. In order to fulfill the aims of the study a qualitative content analysis was carried out on 17 articles from Aftonbladet and DN. The result of this investigation has shown that newspaper articles express several different reasons for female prostitution that can be related to earlier research on prostitution. However there is an overstatement of causes with compelling character. Based on the sensational journalism theory, it is understood that these types of articles are overrepresented as they contain greater measure of sensation and higher news value. The results of the study are discussed from the theoretical agenda-setting perspective. It has been interpreted that the public's beliefs about causes of female prostitution are affected by reports in media about compelling causes.

Full textCrime is an area that meets the requirements for being highly valued as a news topic and is often something that attracts the readers. When media is reporting about what’s going on in the world is especially violent crimes getting much publicity. Previous research shows that medias frequent way to report about crimes creates an uncalled-for fear among the population. There is a lot of national and international research about crime in media, but this study will focus on a special type of crime and the place it has in media, namely organized crime. We look at how organized crime is portrayed in Swedish news media, which differences it is compared to other crimes, and also if morning press and tabloid press reports in different ways and in that case how. The study was done by a quantitative content analysis on 200 articles. Half of these were published in Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet which is morning press while the other half is from Aftonbladet and Expressen which represents the tabloid press. The articles is also divided in to 100 articles about organized crimes and the remaining 100 about other crimes. The study shows that the reporting about the two types of crimes has differences. Organized crime gets more physical space in the papers due to the fact that these crimes more often has pictures in the articles. This type of crime is portrayed like a bigger threat and risk compared to other crimes, it is often written in a magnified way and the pictures is used to increase the sense of threat/risk. Organized crime is portrayed as much more dangerous than other crimes. We also saw differences in the two types of newspaper. Tabloid press is writing in a more magnified way than morning press, which in this study means that they more often use words that is only there in the purpose of increasing the sense of threat. Tabloid press is also using more pictures to fortify the feeling that the article is supposed to mediate. With the support of the agenda setting theory, valuation and selection of news, framing theory and court journalism did we along our results analyze and discuss the research question. We understand why organized crime is getting as much publicity as it does, due to the fact that it fulfills the criterias to create media dramaturgi, but we also see it as a problem as media with its portraying can create an uncalled-for fear and concern among the crowd. It does not just affect the person but also the society since the image of the criminal world that people has disagree with the reality. Since this can affect the entire society we mean that this study is relevant for rulers of the country and the police. During the study has it been stated that research about organized crime is limited. There is not much statistics and facts about this type of crime, so we would like to see more research in this field overall. Build up on this there is not much research to find about organized crime in relation to media either. Above all it is the swedish research that’s lacking in this field and we would like to see future swedish researchers immerse themselves into this field. For example, through a study like this, but with a bigger empirical data, to get a better understanding of the relationship between organized crime and media.

Full textAfter the emerge of the hashtag #metoo, sexual abuse and harassment became a heavily debated topic in Sweden and a lot of people were portrayed in the media after allegations of sexual offenses. With an increasing concern about how the information affects can be negative, several researchers claimed that the media acted as a trial by hanging them out without giving the opportunity to defend themselves. This thesis has therefore made comparative quantitative content analysis on two different news sources on the internet – Aftonbladet and Svenska motståndsrörelsen movement with their reporting about sex crimes following the #metoo. The first mentioned was a mainstream newspaper that politically was referred to as social-democratic independence. The second where an alternative media that sympathizes with the alternative right-movement. There were different terms in the form of the perpetrator, tonality to the event and the volume of the articles that were investigated. Then the result was based on an agenda setting approach and that inequalities between the different components contribute to social stratification. The variables in the design were race, political orientation, gender and name. The survey result shows that there was a strong inequality in who you choose to hang in the media, as well as how this is described. There were both an inequality between the two newspapers and within them. This strengthens the process of information impact and draws attention to the impartiality of the media and the importance of source criticism.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to contribute to knowledge about similarities and differences between discourses in traditional- and social media concerning the refugee issue. Furthermore the purpose will be answered by exploring and compare the use of language and explicit themes in the discourses, in two of Swedens largest newspapers: Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, aswell as selected top-tweets on Twitter. The intention of the study is to receive understanding if and how the discourses in traditional media are reciprocating with the discourses on Twitter. To fufill the purpose of this study, four framing questions will be answered: which rhetorical stylistic figures are used in Dagens Nyheter, Svenska dagbladet and on Twitter? Which explicit and implicit messages can be discovered with help from the used language in the discourses in Dagens nyheter, Svenska dagbladet and Twitter? What negative respectively positive emotive words occurs in the newspapers and on Twitter? How can the result of the used language be discussed by Discourse theory and The agenda setting theory? The study’s theoretical framework are The agenda setting theory and Discourses theory, the theories will be connected to previous research about representation in the media in the section of analysis. The study’s result shows that the figuration of the refugee issue are displayed in different ways through the use of language, for example in the use of rhetorical stylistic figures and emotionally charged words. The used language on Twitter contains more explicit negative and dramatically charged words compared to discourses in Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. However the study indicated a cooperation between the traditional- and social media, due to similar themes that were discovered. Nevertheless, it was more difficult to distinguish the explicit and implicit messages in the discourses on Twitter compared to Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. The subjects in the newspapers where rediscovered on Twitter, where users consider something about the subject which shows some tendencies of collaboration between the newspapers and social media.

Theories that have been under observation for this study, and which have functioned as tools for the analyzing process are: the agenda-setting theory, media ideology, framing, media logic and political communication. Further inspirations that have been under consideration and of values through the development of this thesis are thoughts from the modern theorist Jürgen Habermas, and earlier studies that have been made on the subject in matter, for example ones by Lars Palm and Vanni Tjernström.
Results from this study showed that there were differences between the two nations way of reporting about the subject, and also that changes over time have occurred. Mostly, it was the Swedish news reporting that showed evident change over the three investigated periods. This can be explained by the countries over all changed relationship towards the European Union. Further did results from this study show that the American articles included more actors and subjects, compared to the Swedish articles. This can be a factor of the American articles longer character.

The master thesis investigates if the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Globo instrumentalized the news about the 2014 World Cup in Brazil to defend political and economic interests. The study assumes that journalism has the ability to schedule issues in the society and form public opinion. The hypothesis is that these newspapers associated their publications with the electoral interests of certain politicians. The methodology includes bibliographical research and analysis of the journalistic content referring to the headlines on the front page of the two newspapers between May and July 2014. The research is guided by the Agenda-Setting Theory, McCombs (2009) and concepts of social actors and formation of public opinion in Habermas (2012a; 2012b). Among the results, there were 427 headlines in Folha de S. Paulo and 534 in O Globo, which scheduled, almost daily, the World Cup through news, editorials, reports, columns, articles and notes. In this way, the journalistic coverage could be organized by categories: championship, organization, political issues, protests and expenses with the event, besides having been mapped the presence of political actors. Thus, the issues regarding the World Cup with a focus on politics were analyzed from the perspective of Habermas, in which Folha de S. Paulo and O Globo maintained narratives with an interest coining a negative image of president Dilma Rousseff. Also the political actors listed in the narratives expressed private, political, economic and electoral interests around the World Cup
