Rubil, Dijana, and Caroline Schöld. "The influence of and interaction between socialization agents in the child-consumers purchasing process." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, EMM (Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Management), 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-13096.

Full text
Abstract:

In several years researchers have focused on identifying different socialization agents that influence the child consumer in the purchasing process. These studies have identified parents, friends and peers, television, role models, and different virtual communities as socialization agents. However, there is still no understanding of how the socialization agents are integrated in the decision-making process.

The purpose is therefore to identify how the child-consumers are influenced by different sources in their decision-making process, and recognise the socialization agents’ interaction as influencers.

The authors have found that there is a continuous interaction between the socialization agents in the decision-making process. The socialization agents, such as parents, siblings, friends and peers, television, role models and virtual communities, separately influence the adolescents in the purchasing process, however, the adolescents do not only take into consideration the opinion of one socialization agent but rather they use all of them. The authors have also found that the socialization agents act as support systems to other socialization agents, this in both influence and credibility.

Justice, Jashard. "Agents of Socialization: Effects on the Attitudes and Beliefs of African Americans on Interracial Marriages." TopSCHOLAR®, 2002. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/603.

Abstract:
Using the 2 000 General Social Survey I analyzed appropriate variables to assess the effects of agents of socialization in relation to the attitudes and beliefs of African Americans toward interracial marriages. Socialization theory was examined and used as a framework to guide this current study. Regression analyses indicated that neighborhood composition is the best predictor of facilitating positive attitudes for African Americans toward interracial marriages. In line with past research, African Americans, despite ongoing discrimination and prejudiced attitudes, still prefer to reside in neighborhoods that are mixed 50-50 (Farley, Schuman, Bianchi, Colasanto, and Hatchett 1978). Contrary to expectations, education, schools, peers, class, and religion failed to be significant. Moreover, 96 percent of African Americans opposed laws banning racial intermarriage.

Mackie, Grace E. "The influencing effect of socialization agents on male children's sportswear choice decisions : a study of 8-11 year old male reactions to mother versus peers." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/1032.

Abstract:
Academics, educationalists and parents have all expressed increasing concern about targeting and marketing towards children, particularly to those within the age group of eight to thirteen, and identified as tweenagers. Through an analysis of the literature it is established that inconsistencies exist on the influence of socialization agents on the reactions of young male consumers. Review of the literature also identifies that much is understood about female tweenagers but little is yet known about male tweenagers. The interpretive approach adopted explores the associations and reactions of male tweenagers to agents of consumer socialization, with a focus on mother versus peers. The study demonstrates how these agents affect the decisions of eight to eleven year old males, in the final years of the Scottish primary school system, within the sportswear sector. A two-stage research design combined a group based data procedure, supported by a projective comic strip scenario. Themes were identified from the analysis of friendship group discussions supported by the identification of phenomena emerging from projective data. An interpretivist epistemology supported an iterative, grounded process of data analysis, leading to the development of frameworks of consumer behaviour for male tweenagers within the product sector. The findings offer a different understanding from studies on female tweenagers in relation to parental involvement and influence, pester power and peer pressure. Four assertions emerged from the findings. Firstly, mum is identified as the gateway to brand information and in a positive attachment agent, evidenced through the exertion of positive reactions towards ‘mum’. Pester power was not in evidence, and instead supports the views on joint action between parent and child when participating in the consumer socialization game. Peer pressure is low, as these children demonstrate negative responses to peer socialization agents. And more importantly, these boys are identified as being different to girls in their socialization relationships. This thesis focuses on the voice of males tweenagers and reveals them to be embedded within social networks where they do not yet feel ‘compelled’ to follow the directives of peers when making sportswear choices. The findings contribute to the literature by proposing that marketers and consumer researchers need to review the assumptions that what is known about children, and in particular girl tweenagers, can be transferred to male tweenagers. This exploratory study questions the usefulness of these assumptions as an appropriate basis for practitioner and researcher decisions, and underlines the need to study males tweenagers as a separate consumer social group.

Abstract:
combining approaches to family language policy with a language socialization approach, the present thesis examines family interoctions in five bi/multilingual lronian families in Sweden. The foci of the thesis have emerged from viewing and analyzing video-recordings of the families' everyday interactions, interviews and observations conducted during two phases of fieldwork. The thesis explores family - parents' and children's - language practices and the ways they contribute to the construction, negotiation and instantiation of family language policies. Considering children's active role in family interactions, it explores parents' heritage language maintenance practices and children's responses to these practices. In addition, the thesis examinas siblings' contribution to familial language choices and practices. The thesis documents parental strategies aimed at heritage language maintenance and children's bi/multilingual development. Recurrent interactional practices - through which parents attempted to enforce a monolingual, heritage language, context for parent-child interactions - were explored (Study Il. Through such exchanges the parents positioned themselves as "experts", insisting on the child's compliance, whereas the child's (affectively aggravated) resistance was frequent, and the parents recurrently accommodated the child's language choices by terminating language instruction. Such language maintenance strategies at times resulted in explicit and implicit language negotiations, and the child's growing resistance cantributed to changes in parents' language practices over time (Study Il). Siblings' contribution to shaping the language practices and language environment of immigrant families was explored in Study 111. It shows that siblings corrected each other's language use and choices and provided language instruction (in Swedish, English and heritage languages) when language-related problems occurred. By predominantly using swedish, siblings contributed to language shift. The thesis shows how family members' language practices contribute to heritage language maintenance or language shift and to shaping family language policies.

Abstract:
The literature on organizational socialization in management has mainly focused on newcomers’ adjustment into stable organizations. Conversely, this study attempts to understand the socialization process of insiders in a context of organizational change. Built from managerial and sociological approaches of socialization at work and complementary concepts of role theory, the conceptual framework highlights the key dimensions of the process: contrast, role tension, organizational tactics/practices, proactive tactics/behaviors, socialization states. Conducted in the national French railway company (SNCF), a qualitative longitudinal study enriches the understanding of each dimension and their articulation through social mechanisms. From this research, six typical processes are identified leading to three behaviors of absorption, exploration or role determination. From a meta-level analysis, four collective trajectories are suggested, based on the continuity/discontinuity perceived of identity in a diachronic perspective. Managerial implications are proposed to the company and organizations experiencing similar socialization issues

We found very few authors analyzing the topic of socialization and participation in sports activities of wheelchair basketball-players. Research has been performed about quantitive and qualitative data of wheelchair basketball-players, the specifications of the game, players’ possibilities of improving the skills of movement and the game itself depending on the degree of disability. The activity of wheelchair basketball has been investigated, which shows the possibilities of players and the whole team to aim for the better results, to improve the overall qualification of all players and the chances for socialization participating in wheelchair basketball activities. But the research on the disabled with lower and higher level of disability, the features of their socialization and participation in wheelchair basketball activities are not abundant. Socialization peculiarities are the possibilities to socialize according to certain life aspects: life in a family, employment, movement, physical ability and activeness. Majority of authors investigate the problems of wheelchair basketball though actual peculiarities of lower and higher level of disability of wheelchair basketball-players who have socialized in their environment are not evidently described. The aim of the paper is to determine and evaluate the singularities of socialization and participation in sports activities of wheelchair basketball-players. Alvarez, Enid. "Information Sources That Influence the Financial Literacy of Puerto Rican College Students." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7269.

Abstract:
Researchers agree that Puerto Ricans lack basic financial knowledge that would allow them to participate in the financial system actively. However, the literature did not provide any data about the knowledge transmission practices that Puerto Ricans use to gather and transmit financial knowledge. As a result, there was a limited understanding of the social learning processes used by Puerto Rican college students to make financial decisions. Using consumer socialization and family financial socialization models as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental study was to identify the information sources that Puerto Ricans use to gather financial knowledge. A sample of 198 Puerto Rican college students answered a portion of the College Student Financial Literacy Survey. The research questions examined the preference of 4 financial information sources, their level of influence, and the impact of exposure frequency of these socialization agents. Descriptive statistics showed that participants preferred to gather financial knowledge from parents. A combination of one-way ANOVA and RMANOVA confirmed that parents also had the highest level of influence. The results of a multiple linear regression test suggested that the frequency of exposure did not predict the financial knowledge of students in the sample. The outcomes of this study may be helpful in optimizing the communication vehicles used to transmit financial knowledge to the public. Researchers, educators, and policymakers may also use this study as foundation for the development of effective financial education strategies that will promote positive social change in Puerto Rico.

Reguer-Petit, Manon.

Full text
Abstract:
In a context of diversification of family structures, this thesis begins by analyzing the impact of familial turning points on the political socialization of women. In addition, it provides an understanding of how these turning points impact the way women see themselves as agents of socialization for their children or stepchildren. This study is based on a twofold comparison in France: on the one side, an examination of three different family structures (nuclear families, single-parent families and stepfamilies) and, on the other side, a comparison of associative and non-associative contexts. A quantitative analysis of ERFI data provided by INED complements the use of several qualitative methods: an ethnographic study within three associations and an interview study carried out with 88 women, mothers in nuclear or single-parent families and stepfamilies. The results of this thesis show that family structures influence the political socialization process of women. Experiences of family blending, and even more those of separation, arouse the transformation of socialization among women. These transformations are marked by a change in their values regarding family and gender roles, their perception of justice as well as of familial and social policies. They finally affect women’s attitude toward the political offer. Family trajectory therefore impacts the way women see themselves as agents of socialization. The analysis demonstrates that family structure influences what women want to pass on to their children or stepchildren, the way they do it and their degree of intentionality

Abstract:
Much is written down about generations at work in general media, managerial press and academic journals in connection with demographic stakes in postmodern societies. In most writings, generational effects are considered as a social phenomenon that imposes itself upon organizations, compelling them to adapt to Generation Y (and Z coming up) behaviors. This approach doesn’t take into account organizational socialization effects on newcomers. Building up on Joshi et al (2010, 2011) work, we bring together theoretical frameworks on generations and organizational socialization to empirically investigate organizational generations. Indeed, if generations are rooted in temporality, organizations have their own temporality, including founding events, trends and social reproduction modes. In this PhD dissertation, using action-research, we study the particular situation of ERDF (Electricité Réseau Distribution de France) which faces a massive generational renewal. We combine a qualitative pre-diagnosis, an ethnographic observation during 17 months and a survey (1182 respondents) to deeply understand the effects of this massive arrival. From a managerial point of view, we propose that the particular conditions that newcomers experiment at their entry in the company lead to a new organizational generation. We help the company to understand that this first experience of newcomers durably marks their attitudes at work, beyond Generation Y effects. From a theoretical point of view, we introduce the concept of organizational generational imprint as a distinctive mark of an organizational generation. We define the work conditions which mark the imprint; the mechanisms by which the imprint forms itself, underlying the part of role stress in them; and the antecedents that generate a new organizational generation. On the way, we reveal unanticipated effects of the renewal on insiders and organizational culture. Through our actions, we contribute to recognize the demanding effort required from insiders to integrate newcomers

The rehabilitation process of the individual in conditions of deprivation of liberty involves several variables. In this context, it is worth mentioning the role played by the Prison Security Agents (PSA) in that it may or may not contribute to a greater or lesser degree of efficiency with the reintegration / rehabilitation of the prisoner. This work it is a case study in Prison Unit Catalan-GO (UPCat), which has the overall objective to analyze the ASP contribution in the rehabilitation process of the prisoner in light of the perception of the imprisoned, the PSA and law. The study is divided into three investigative steps. First, the profile sociodemographic, academic and labor of ASP's of UPCat was obtained through the application of a questionnaire consisting of thirty-four closed questions, which after being collected and tabulated were subjected to statistical analysis Microsoft Excel 2007® and the results were presented by graphs. But the details of the perception of the PSA regarding the rehabilitation of prisoners through its routine operations in UPCat was obtained through the application of a questionnaire, consisting of thirteen open questions answered for ten PSA, the universe of thirty-eight UPCat. In turn, to analyze the perception of the prisoner on the PSA contribution in his rehabilitation, it was decided to carry out focus group with eight prisoners in the closed regime. The data collected with the questionnaire addressed to the PSA and the focus group held with inmates were analyzed through Bardin content analysis separately with three themes in common: 1) Role of the Prison Security Agent; 2) Relationship of the Prison Security Agent with the inmate and; 3) socialization of the prisoner. It was found that contribute to the rehabilitation of the prisoner is not among the legal duties of the ASP's as well, both as PSA inmates do not realize any of the PSA contribution in rehabilitation of the prisoner. However, it was found that the respectful treatment contributes to more humane conditions in the execution of the sentence.

Abstract:
The job of CEO is rich and complex and the "number one" change, poorly understood, may have an impact on the socio-economic performance, strategy, policy and the organization of the company. Facilitate the arrival of new manager is an important issue for the survival and development of the organization, as well as its organizational socialization remains little studied. The first part explains the conceptual and methodological research, and presents lots of experiments of our assumptions and our tools. We use interviews with executives to define the business leadership and highlight the specifics CEO’s roles and skills. The specific relationship between the leader and its Governance is also studied. Its specific needs of organizational socialization are then demonstrated, particularly in relation to a buyer company and a "classic" employee. In the second part, the concept of organizational socialization is suitable for demanding and unique leader, through the concept of CEO’s Organizational Socialization. This model meets the needs of leader’s socialization, especially during integration, organizational socialization’s milestone. It consists of three types of recoveries: politico-strategic, organizational and managerial. The quality of these recoveries led to the quality of leader’s integration, reclassified strategic integration because of its strategic challenges. An analytical framework is proposed to allow both the new leader to better understand the organization that will lead, but also its own needs through organizational socialization variables and factors that compose it

Abstract:
This study examined commitment levels of two groups of employees: core government employees and contract employees who directly supported the Federal Government. The sample included 85 government employees and 131 contract employees. The research identified each group's level of commitment to various work entities. These included: immediate government office, government organization, employer, and occupation. The focus was on affective commitment, i.e., an employee's emotional attachment to, and desire to maintain membership with, a work entity. A measure was also taken for socialization-related learning. The purpose was to determine if there were: (1) differing levels of affective commitment among the immediate government office, government organization, the employer, and the occupation within each group, (2) differences in work entity affective commitment levels between the two groups, (3) differences in levels of socialization-related learning between the two groups (4) relationships between socialization-related learning levels and work entity affective commitment levels for each group, (5) differences in work entity affective commitment levels in relation to certain demographic variables, and (6) relationships between certain demographic variables and work entity affective commitment levels for each group. Findings indicated that both groups of employees did vary in commitment levels to various work entities. Government employees displayed the most commitment to the occupation and least to the immediate office. Contract employees also displayed the most commitment to the occupation but the least to the government organization. Between the two groups, commitment level to the employer differed significantly with contractors displaying a higher level to the employing firm than government employees recorded to the Federal Service. Work entity had a significant effect and a significant employee group-by-work entity interaction was found. Differences in socialization-related learning levels and a relationship between socialization-related learning and work entity affective commitment levels were found for both groups. Several relationships between demographic variables and work entity affective commitment levels were also found for both groups. Formal and informal interventions and work delegation strategies are recommended for organizations involved in employment relationships involving core and contract employees. Areas for future research are also presented.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Given that the media can be defined as a socialization factor and that sexuality is a topic that is often aired in various media, the purpose of this qualitative analysis is to examine how the media portrays sexuality and more specifically women's sexuality. The reason for examining women's sexuality is that women during the 17th century were constrained in their sexuality compared to men, and this constraint most likely has made an inprint on society to this day. This study poses three questions, the first concerns if the desexualisation of women characterizes the lifestyle magazines today. The second question examines which words that are used in lifestyle magazines to describe the female genitalia. The third question focuses on to which extent the media content in lifestyle magasines is characterized, directly or indirectly, by sexuality. From a media and communications perspective the study has a theoretical framework based on agenda setting and how media is able to influence its users, the young users in particular. The research done by Jenny Kitzinger plays a central part. From a sociological and a sexological perspective the theoretical framework revolves around Gisela Helmius' definitions on ideas of sexuality in society and Gayle Rubin's hierarchical valuation of sex acts. The methods that have been used are a critical discourse analysis which examines the constructivist function of the texts and a smaller quantitative analysis to examine to which extent the media content concerns sexuality. The empirical data is based on eleven lifestyle magazines aimed at young women. The analysis reveals that nine percent of the content in the examined magazines concerns sexuality in some way. It also reveals that the examined magazines are characterized by the idea of a restrictive sexuality which prevails in Sweden, which problably is a result of the above mentioned desexualisation. This manifests primarily in the consolidation of the prevailing ideology of love, where sexuality only is allowed within a framework of love, heterosexuality and monogamy. The magazines also contribute to making invisible the female sexual genitalia.

Abstract:
This thesis maps the social space of the Brazilian education journalism. It is an exploratory work, which intends to describe a universe not yet studied in Brazil and poorly explored in the world. It sheds light upon one of its main actors the education journalist , using a multifocal sociological analysis, which comprises three scales of observation (macro, meso and micro). It relies on the theoretical framework of the theories of socialization to answer the following questions of research: how the disputes and the social games that take place in the space of education journalism are characterized, who is the Brazilian education journalist and how he/she builds his/her professional identity. The hypothesis proposed hereby is that, in order to analyze the dynamics of education journalism, one has to understand its relation with other spaces of the journalistic universe and the power universe, the structure of the professional relations within its social space, the senses at stake throughout its history and the agents trajectories of socialization. Fieldwork resulted both in quantitative and qualitative information extracted from three different instruments of data collection: a survey that comprised answers from 92 out of the 96 professionals of the researched population, a series of semi-structured interviews with 12 subjects and a socio-analysis of an education newsroom. The analysis points at a social space poorly autonomous, with weak institutions and heavily subjected to external pressures. Therefore, the organization of that space is not linked to the degree of specialization in education. One identifies different hierarchy vectors, which point to a multitude of identity profiles and to the marginalization of the most specialized professionals. One argues that this configuration is due to a specificity in the Brazilian context: a process that we call intermittent modernity, that weakens institutions and amplifies the subjects need of auto-fabrication. As a result, they must face the proofs throughout their trajectories relying mostly on their own individual resources.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines mealtime conversations between parents and children in eight Swedish and eight Italian middle class, dual-earner households, exploring the ways in which children are engaged in the cooperative construction of social order. The study is part of an international project (cf. Aronsson & Pontecorvo, 2002), coordinated with prior work in the US (cf. Ochs & Kremer-Sadlik, 2013). Study I explores how children’s accounts work during family dinner conversations. So called proto-accounts (laments, multiple repeats, want-statements) and varied verbal accounts are analyzed in relation to age class or prior language socialization experiences. Study II focuses on the use of endearment terms in directive sequences between parents and children. The findings show an asymmetrical distribution of endearment terms, in that only parents make use of them when interactional problems – children’s non-compliance with parental requests in particular – arise.   Study III examines the ways in which Italian parents deploy the discourse marker dai (‘come on’) in directive sequences. This is a flexible linguistic resource that is employed by parents as a cajoling token when children fail to comply with parental requests, hindering the advancement of the in-progress activity. This thesis describes family mealtimes as parent-directed activities where sociality, morality and local understandings of the world (Ochs & Shohet, 2006) are collaboratively re-created and enacted. This confirms the crucial role of everyday family meals as rich cultural sites (Ochs & Shohet, 2006) for reasserting moral attitudes of the family: participants learn moment by moment how to be competent actors that are able to choose between alternative courses of action and that can therefore be held accountable for their actions (Bergmann, 1998: 284). From this point of view, a dinner is paradigmatic of the deep moral sense that permeates the making of a family.

Abstract:
This is qualitative study about Kenyan street children. The aim of this study is to get a better understanding of the pull and push factors towards the street and towards rehabilitation centres. The question formulation is; How can rehabilitation centres assist street children in leaving the street life? 25 former street children have been interviewed in a combination of focus group and individual interviews. The theoretical framework that is used for the analysis is elucidation the perspective of childhood, the street child and the street, theories about socialisation and stigma. The result shows: Pull factors exist in both directions. The pull factors towards the street are freedom, friends in the streets and drug addictions. The pull factors towards the centre are access to education, a chance to be treated like full human beings and to be able to get a better future. The street children are active social agents who have to have a desire to leave the street, it is not possible to force them off the streets. What is offered in the centre has to be viewed as better than what they have in the streets. One way for the centres to help the street children to get the desire to leave the streets is by helping them to focus on their future. The centre can also help the street child to make the transformation to the centre easier. The most important aspects is to offer drug rehabilitation programs and make the re-socialization process easier by acknowledge the positive things the street children have learned in the street and to treat them as active social agents.

Abstract:
In this examination project I look into what ways upper secondary school students conceive themselves as politically influenced before they voted for the general election of 2010. The purpose is to examine which influences the upper secondary school surroundings and the classes of civic education are contributing with to students before they voted. As a method, I have used personal, semi-structural interviews on eight upper secondary school students who all voted for a party represented in the parliament. I have asked questions about how they believe their parents, the surroundings of their school and the classes of civic education have influenced them. To separate which influences primarily the upper secondary school and the classes of civic educations have had on the students, I have selected two comparison groups of four students in each. One group contains only parent-influenced students whereas the other group contains only not parent-influenced students.   My findings show that the upper secondary school surroundings have played an important part to both student groups and the outcome may be theoretically generalized to all upper secondary school students studying natural science. The influences related to the classes of civic education have had a diversified outcome, mostly on not parent-influenced students. Therefore, this piece of result cannot be theoretically generalized to all natural science students. Not parent-influenced students also perceive themselves as more influenced by miscellaneous meaningful people, than do parent-influenced students.   I understand the results as students not concurring with their parents politically, are more inclined to chase their political identity among their peer friends and other meaningful people. They are also more open-minded in the teaching moments of political parties, also during the political debate throughout the civic education. Finally, I discuss how the results should be viewed by teachers in civic education and what role the upper secondary school continues to play, as a political socialization agent.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study has been to examine how the media presents policymakers from a gender perspective. We have made an analysis on the basis of genderdichotomies. We have studied images from the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet as well as the French newspaper Le Monde in order to achieve a greater understanding in which way the both medias contributes to the reproduction of gender in the media. The conclusion of the study has shown that the gender system is somewhat confirmed by the way in which men and women are presented in the medias. Men are presented with more traditional gender related associations than women who is shown in a more dynamic constellation, this is mostly evident in the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

Abstract:
Among other signs, the vitality of the children's book publishing field bears testimony to the important place books still occupy today in children's everyday lives. However, despite the fact that some French sociologists have already studied the content of children's books, the way young "readers" receive the norms and representations conveyed by this literature has been the object of very little sociological investigation. In the present thesis I analyze the way children understand and (re)interpret the textual and iconographic content of children's books, with a view to both shedding light on what is really at stake in the act of reception, and also bringing elements that might contribute to better understanding the process of socialization. I focus on "food," as it is an iconic observation tool for the entirety of this process's modalities and its many differentiations. An experimental protocol implemented on the field has allowed me to approach the point of view of 5- to 8-year-old children coming from various social backgrounds, and thus to study the way the messages conveyed by the various agents of socialization (such as family, mass media, and school) are organized, as well as the construction of potential belongings to a gender and/or social group. In this regard, the agency of very young children is also addressed

Full text
Abstract:
Sales force is a human and complex human relations system that is characterized by a specific management activity based on the control and the direct supervision of the sales agents in their daily activities. In order to decrypt these relations between the actors, we have mobilized the concept of organizational socialization, both because it proposes a further reading of the managerial reality, but also because it constitutes a model of influence able to regulate the organizational behaviors of the actors. This thesis aims at enlightening the management of the independent sales agents into labor integration process, and explaining why the turnover of the sales agents is so high during that critical stage of socialization process. The exploiting of the theoretical potential of the concept of socialization nevertheless arises the issue of the relevance of such a study, given the independent sales agents can avoid any kind of socialization, because legally they don’t belong to the company. For that we make a first survey that enables us to point out the random and natural character of the socialization in these organizations through interactions. We propose thus to conceptualize the socialization of the independent salesman, and we consider it as a construction process of the management relation. The analysis model that we develop uses the interactionnist analysis framework of the socialization through the process of building a sense, the theory of the social regulation, and the theory of psychological contract. It has been field-tested through a qualitative research study, mobilizing the method of cognitive cards. On the basis of the mental representations of the main actors of the independent sales agents ‘socialization, we wish to produce skills that take into account realities and the environments in which these sales teams work. The results of our research show clearly the complexity of the schemes studied. These reveal the difficulty of converging the actors ‘interests in their collaboration. They reveal also the existence of a partial socialization due, partly, to the fact that the companies poorly evolve in their management practices. The skills acquired by the new sales agents are based essentially on the commercial aspects of work. The relations between the sales workforces are not taken into account in the socialization process. Finally, the sales agents leave work because the components of their relations with the company do not match with their value system. In that case, we propose to manage and formalize the socialization of the independent sales agent, recommending shared management and leadership that would permit to take into account the interests of the different actors

Abstract:
Since the Civil Rights era, African Americans have come a long way. In the years since the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, there have been dramatic increases in education, political representation, business ownership, and occupational position. Yet, for all of the economic, social and political advances made in the African American community, many young people are still subjected to inferior schools, housing and depressed communities where crime, drugs, police brutality and HIV/AIDS run rampant. As a result, there is a growing tension among the community over the root causes of their predicament and the most adequate way of dealing with them. Based on the generational political theory, this dissertation examines generational effects within the African American community since 1964. From this period, three distinct cohorts are analyzed: the Civil Rights, Integration, and Hip Hop generations. The objective is to determine if different experiences over this period have modified political values, attitudes, and behaviors from one generation to the next. Using data from the 1996 National Black Elections Study (NBES), I examine public policy preferences and political attitudes of African Americans. I use bivariate and multivariate analysis to show generational gaps in attitudes about issues related to major party performance. I draw three major conclusions from this analysis. First, racial group interests remain powerfully important across all cohorts. Next, the Hip Hop generation tends to hold more conservative attitudes than either the Civil Rights or the Integration generations. Finally, I conclude that at the very core of black politics, political values have not changed. However, there is a tension among the Hip Hop cohort between the impending attitudinal changes and the more traditional values of the Civil Rights cohort. The proposed dissertation contributes to the body of research by analyzing generational politics and behavior to better understand the future of black politics in the 21st century.

It is known that ethnic-racial socialization messages received by Black youth are critical to their ethnic-racial identity development. Despite recognition that identity achievement is rarely completed by the end of adolescence and Black youth are embedded in larger multicultural familial, communal, and societal contexts, previous studies almost exclusively focus on parents as the isolated provider of ethnic-racial socialization messages during adolescence. Using a sample of 171 Black emerging adults, this retrospective study focused on the influence of four unique types of ethnic-racial socialization messages from diverse ethnic-racial socialization agents throughout adolescence and emerging adulthood on the development of Black ethnic-racial identity during emerging adulthood. Participants reported that although parents, adult family members, and siblings were the most influential socialization agents during adolescence, they became less influential during emerging adulthood as peers gained more influence. Across all developmental periods, emerging adults reported the strongest messages they received were egalitarian and racial pride messages and the weakest messages they received were negative messages. Additionally, seven different profiles of ethnic-racial identity development during emerging adulthood were identified and were predicted by the types of ethnic-racial socialization messages emerging adults received from adolescence through emerging adulthood. These results highlight the importance of receiving racial pride and racial barrier messages along with minimal egalitarian and negative messages from socialization agents in order to foster a healthy and positive Black ethnic-racial identity during emerging adulthood. Clinical implications, family life education implications, implications for diverse socialization agents, and areas for future research based on the findings of the present study are discussed.

Abstract In Taiwan, people placed more emphasis on academic than sports performance. Also, because of the popularity of television and the prevalence of the Internet, many adolescents seemingly prefer static to dynamic leisure activities. Adolescents’ attitudes toward sports might be influenced by the media, teachers, parents, peers and the community through a socialization process. This stirs the current research interest to understand the socialization process of adolescents’ sport attitudes through important agents. Mixed methods of data collection were utilized including two small-group interviews, six individual interviews, and 93 questionnaires. Participants were recruited from two middle and senior high schools, and their classmates, peers, teachers and parents were then recruited. Each of the interviews took approximately between half an hour and one hour. In the interviews, the questions included: Why do you like or dislike sports? How often do you participate in sports? How do your parents, teachers, peers, schools, community and the media influence your attitudes toward sports? How do you influence your kids’ (students’) participation in sports activities and attitudes toward sports? How do you see the impacts of the community or the media on your kids’ or your students’ sports participation and attitudes? Follow-up questions were added depending on different interview situations. As for the survey, the questionnaire asked participants about their sports behaviors, attitudes toward sports and sports knowledge, and the impacts of important agents on their sports attitudes. For the survey, the sample was consisted of adolescents from the two middle and senior high schools. Data were analyzed by a coding process and descriptive analysis of statistics. Cross-validation was used with data from interviews and questionnaires. The results showed that the media and peers wielded the most impacts on adolescents’ sports attitudes than other important agents in the sports socialization process. It was revealed that adolescents felt easy to relax with the media. The remote controllers seemed to bring a feeling of satisfaction. Some respondents mentioned that they did not like sweating and could avoid the uncomfortable feeling when simply playing with the media. Some answered that they could learn the skills and knew information on TV or the Internet. In addition, because nowadays many families had only one child, peers similar to sibling became important. No matter that it was in school or after school, peers were always around and played an important role in the sports socialization process. As for the school, it seemed that teachers valued academic grades than sports performance. In school, the break time was too short to do any sports. Sport facilities were not diversified, or the facility capacity was limited for only a few people to play at the same time. As for the impacts of parents, although adolescents admired their parents as a sports role model, the parents might work late, did not concern with adolescents’ sports participation or parents like teachers placed more emphasis on academic performance. The community seemed to have the lowest influence in the socialization process. Although some communities did provide some facilities for members to play together, some respondents said that they were concerned with the issues of safety and security. In addition, some adolescents replied that most of their time was in formal or cram schools but not in community. For suggestions, it might be possible for adolescents to increase participation in sports activities and develop more positive sports attitudes if teachers could put more emphasis on sports, parents could pay more attention in adolescent’s sports participation, and schools and community can improve sports environments. The grade level, gender, and socioeconomic status of the students evenly influenced sport involvement behavior. 2. Agents of socialization had greater effects on female students by the peer group and community background; the peer group had a greater effect that whether students take part in sports club; highest socioeconomic status was affected by family factors. 3. Agents of socialization had greater effects on students with high involvement than the students with low involvement. The most penetration in this research is to comprehend with that what kinds of agents would be learned by elementary school students nowadays. As a result of a democratic society and mass media compete with each other, the result shows that mass media and peer groups are two main intermediums, then family and school are on the back burner. Besides, to provide some findings for parents and government authorities. Based on these conclusions, this study proposes following suggestions: When the government authorities plan the policy of sports for the whole people, they need to consider sexual difference. In addition, the government authorities should propose becoming programs and give equal chances of sports to male and female. Sports media should also report the rate of male and female athletes fairly in order to change formulaic impression on male and female traditionally. During the promotion of sports education among elementary school students, these two factors (mass media & pear group) can be practically incorporated into a program with double the effectiveness. It’s reveal low correlation between community and sport involvement, so augment or set up more playgrounds and to take place sport activities in each community were demand.

ABSTRACT: The main objective of this study was to investigate the youth delinquency phenomenon through the understanding of the livelihoods and experiences of its characters, as well as the type of relation established with the different agents of socialization (family, peer groups and school). It was equally intended to know the existence of real future projects by these adolescents. The participants (N=8) are males with ages between 15 and 17 years and are currently under internment (four in open regime and four in half-open regime) in the Educative Centre of the Social Reinsertion Institute. This inquiry had an exploratory character and used a qualitative methodology. The chosen instrument used for the data gathering used was a half-directive interview and, for the data analysis, the technique of content analysis was used. The results show a strong relationship with the family, real on the other hand or idealized by another one. The approach of the deviant’s behaviours seems to be more difficult, especially with the respect to the moral judgments on the same ones. It seems equally that these adolescents have hope in the future, with the aspiration of a different course, with personal and professional projects of life. The data has equally shown the necessity of more inquiries in this topic, with the view of giving a voice to its main protagonists, the adolescents under internment in Educative Centre.

Kobayashi, Masaki. "A sociocultural study of second language tasks : activity, agency, and language socialization." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/17231.

Abstract:
In recent years, an increasing number of second language (L2) researchers have employed the concept of task as a unit of analysis (e.g., Crookes & Gass, 1993a, 1993b; Ellis, 2003; Skehan, 1998). However, most studies to date have focused primarily on L2 students doing narrowly defined tasks in classrooms or laboratory settings. How do L2 students work together in and out of class time and over an extended period of time to undertake their in-class academic tasks? How do they benefit from their previous experiences when performing related and similar activities? Informed by sociocultural perspectives (e.g., Duff, 2003; Lantolf, 2000; Ochs, 1988; Vygotsky, 1978; Wertsch, 1991), the present multiple-case study examined ESL students' group project work as a means to their becoming more fully competent knowers and speakers about academic content/culture. More specifically, the study examined ESL students' academic discourse socialization through their undertaking of oral presentation tasks. Participants included 80 Japanese undergraduate students enrolled in a two-semester content course at a Canadian university. Data were collected through classroom and non-classroom observations of project work, in-depth, semi-structured interviews, audio-journals kept by key students, and audio- and video-recordings of their interactions. Eleven key students and their partners were observed as they participated in a variety of activities both inside and outside the classroom. Recorded interactions were analyzed using mainly the analytical tools of the ethnography of communication and linked with themes that emerged from the other data. Data analysis suggested that the instructor, together with her assistant, provided her students with various kinds of help for their undertaking of tasks. In particular, she organized the course in such a way that earlier tasks and projects would serve as scaffolds for the students' participation in subsequent ones. The analysis also indicated that students' task-preparatory activities as well as actual task performances were rich contexts for learning and socialization. Many groups prepared for their presentations by negotiating teacher expectations, task definitions and goals, roles and identities, the language and content of their presentations, and rehearsing their speeches. The analysis suggested that these collaborative sessions, conducted primarily in Japanese, seem to have allowed the students to move their detailed discussion forward with less frustration, maintain group harmony and pursuit of goals, and attend to the form and delivery of their speech. The analysis further suggested that in order to undertake their tasks, students often acted upon their cognitive uptake from previous events, and such continued engagement sometimes took place rather privately as inner dialogues (Volosinov, 1973) or in the absence of the researcher. These findings point to the need to take a behind-the-scenes look at contingency across tasks and contexts by using a variety of methods, including a detailed analysis of discourse, interviews, and journal entries that would together allow for a consideration of both etic and emic perspectives.

The first objective of this thesis was to analyse the role of the ethnic identity of children of African origin. Three studies were carried out for this effect. In Study 1 it has been found that black children describe themselves using more social attributes than personal ones, and those attributes are more negative than positive when compared to responses from white children. In Study 2 it has been found that the Cape-Verde an children investigated behaved according to the social identity that they had perceived to be the wished one by their parents. In Study 3 it has been found that for the black children investigated the level of their achievement in school is dependent on their ethnic identity and on the ethnic mix in their school. The second objective of this thesis was to characterise what the teachers and the parents thought about issues connected with ethnicity and children’s education. In Parts 4 and 5 of this thesis the educational beliefs of the teachers and of the mothers of black and white children, are characterised through identification of the differences in their educational thinking and through the understanding of the thinking of the mothers as a function of their ethnic identity. In Part 6, the stereotypes that the teachers investigated have in relation to children of African origin, have been characterised. In conclusion, the results of the studies carried out and described in this thesis help the better understanding of the way children from ethnic minorities develop and integrate in the wider society they live in.

The relationship between organizational socialization and job satisfaction had been empirically evidenced in previous studies. In order to extend the knowledge regarding job satisfaction, the present study tried to test the relationship between the multidimen-sionality of organizational socialization domain and multidimensionality of job satisfac-tion domain. Prior case studies display that employee of service industry need socializa-tion and interpersonal technique. The hotel, travel agency, and airline businesses belong to tourism industry, but their employees had different job characteristics, job styles, and contents. This study used the three businesses as moderators to test the conditional rela-tionships between independent variable and dependent variable. It tested whether the conditional relationships had distinct differences caused by the different job characteris-tics of the hotel, travel agency, and airline businesses. Therefore the study would use the hotel, travel agency, and airline businesses to moderate the relationships between or-ganizational socialization and job satisfaction. Eight hundred and thirty-nine sample members were analyzed to test the research hypotheses. The research results were as below: 1.Except that the language and politics dimension of socialization were not sig-nificantly related to the promotion, supervision, and pay dimension of job satis-faction, the others dimensions of socialization were significantly related to the others dimensions of job satisfaction. 2.Socialization and job satisfaction in hotel, travel agency ,and airline businesses had significant differences. 3.The relationship between socialization and job satisfaction was moderated by hotel, travel agency, and airline businesses.

Abstract:
This dissertation study explored the literacies and socialization practices that middle school youth used while engaging in a school-wide Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) class. The primary aims of the dissertation were to contribute to literature on YPAR and to examine the literacy and socialization practices that young people drew upon as resources in developing agentive identities. Relying on what is named as an agentive ecological approach, this study built upon sociocultural theories of literacy and learning to emphasize young people’s development of agency through their shared participation in a YPAR class that was shaped not only by the multiple identities they carried with them into the classroom, but also by factors such as the pedagogy of the teacher, the philosophies of school administrators, and the sociopolitical context of school. This study also relied on the ongoing traditions of critical literacy and critical pedagogy to highlight the ways that YPAR served as a mediator of important critical literacies that allowed students to learn about and directly respond to the social, historical, and cultural contexts of inequality that they encountered. Situated in one of New York City’s most ethnically diverse middle schools, this critical ethnographic study used multimodal and ethnographic methodologies to excavate the experiences of 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in a newly implemented YPAR course at their school. In this year-long course, students were apprenticed as critical social researchers of educational issues while simultaneously provided with opportunities to utilize digital media tools toward civic ends. Methods for this study included 112 hours of participant observation where the researcher captured field notes, weekly memos, and photographs of classroom life across six months of the course; three semi-structured interviews each with six randomly selected students enrolled in 13 sections of YPAR; and multimodal literacy artifacts that included YPAR film materials, Google Classroom assignments, photographs, and digital stories. Three focus group interviews were also conducted with a group of students selected for enrollment in a “YPAR filmmaking course”, where they were tasked with creating a film about the impact of YPAR on the school. This group had a unique vantage point in that that they participated in iterations of YPAR across all three years of their middle school experiences, affording a much needed phenomenological perspective. Finally, two semi-structured interviews were conducted with the teacher of the course, who also provided curriculum and planning documents for analysis. Constant comparative method and Critical Discourse Analysis were the primary methodological tools used to analyze the data in the study. Major findings revealed how the cultivation of critical literacies in the YPAR course afforded youth the opportunity to identify and respond to barriers in their educational contexts, allowing them to assert more humanizing portraits of themselves and their communities. Moreover, students’ leveraging of digital media tools toward civic ends permitted them space to offer perspectives concerning issues like Islamophobia and global violence, assisting them in the brokering of sociopolitical identities that changed the way they saw themselves, others, and the world surrounding them. Findings from the YPAR filmmaking class revealed the ways that youth constructed stories about imagined futures and their perceived role in shaping those futures, signaling new ways that critical digital literacy practices might be cultivated in service of healthy social, civic, and academic identities.

Abstract:
In the context of organisational cultures, police culture gains special emphasis due to its high complexity, considering not only the specificities of police activity but also the scrutiny to which police forces are constantly subjected, by society in general. Adaptation to police culture is one of the main factors that characterise the organisational socialisation process, representing a potential obstacle to a healthy integration of new police officers. However, its influence within the Public Security Police (PSP) has not yet been the focus of attention as regards to the integration of said police officers. With this study we set out to create a suitable instrument for the assessment of the effects of police culture on the socialisation process of new agents of the PSP, encompassing initial training and integration in police stations, laying the foundations for a new line of research aimed at characterising the dominant police culture. The construction process for this instrument was based on the scientific literature on the matter of police culture, in which there are seven identifiable main dimensions (sense of mission, action, cynicism and pessimism; suspicion; isolation and solidarity; conservatism; machismo; racial prejudice; and, pragmatism) and on the content analysis of interviews conducted do seven PSP agents from the 15th Training Course for Agents (CFA). The instrument created (AICP-PSP) will allow future longitudinal research to be carried out with the purpose of characterising the dominant police culture in the PSP and its influence on the socialisation process of its new agents.

Abstract:
The central issue in this study is political socialisation and its implications within a rural setting in South Africa with a particular focus on Calais village in Limpopo Province. The aim of the study is to determine how adult residents of Calais village, are politically socialised; and furthermore to assess the impact of the socialisation process on the residents’ political behaviour within a democratic South Africa. In order to achieve the research purpose, face-to-face interviews were conducted with forty (40) adult residents in Calais village. The study revealed that the respondents were politically socialised by the media, immediate family, peers, extended family, political parties, local municipality, school, traditional leadership, ward committee and religious institutions. The media were the most important agent, while the religious institutions were the least. Furthermore, NGOs and trade unions were not socialisation agents in Calais village. The socialisation process had an impact on the respondents’ political behaviour in terms of political interest, party identification, political beliefs, efficacy, knowledge, awareness and participation.

Boucher, Guillaume.

Full text
Abstract:
The Catholic charimatic renewal puts forward a personal encounter wtih God on the believer’s part, who is then habilitated to exercize different charismas – among which we find healing through the imposing of the hands, glossolalia and revelations. Continued participation in an organized religious group by now autonomous believers has not yet been the subject of sustained academic attention. The present study of a Montreal Catholic charismatic renewal’s center of prayer, whose methodology is inspired by the phenomenological and experiential approaches, aims to develop this problematic, all the while marking a distance with a purely rhetorical understanding of the charismatic experience (Csordas 1997, 2001). The religious socialization (Fer 2005, 2007) framing the admission of a new member at the Center, enligthens the invisible institutionnal mecanisms enabling the integration of a religious community all the while paradoxically enabling the individual to live an individualized religious experience. The charismatic subject, religiously socialized through a conversion lived in a unification of the body-mind, develops new somatic modes of attention, and is thus enabled to experience different intersubjectivities. The subject comes to participate in a collective world of representations and sensations, developing in parallel an increased agency in his dealings with the sacred. Although agency is usually conceived as an act of resistance, the one developped by the charismatics brings about the reproduction of the norm (Mahmood 2001). Religious socialization establishing the parameter of emergence for this agency, it is also the frame circonscribing its expression.

Jean-Pierre, Myrlande.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to explore the perceptions of Haitian women that had immigrated to Quebec in the past five years, of their sexual relationships with men and the extent to which it is reflected in the different types of conjugal relationships. After choosing a qualitative research method, the intersectional feminist theory has been adopted for the analysis. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 Haitian women, aged 18 and 60 years and having immigrated to Quebec in the past five years. The women’s perceptions of sexual relationships have been reported as being a set of practices and discourses interrelated built since childhood and reproducing the unequal relationships between men and women that exist in the Haitian society and in the couples. These unequal relationships are transmitted through the generations and through most of the social institutions such as family, school, culture, laws. This process is also influenced by socio-economic and power issues. The results of this research give scientific data on women sexuality and couple relationships as well as the influence of immigration process. These results also emphasize the need for the Haitian social work to encourage the development of economic empowerment of women and their participation in current debates in society on the development of women.

Hagen, Sean Noel. "Academic discourse socialisation : a discursive analysis of student identity." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/20000.

Full text
Abstract:
This study set out to investigate how students construct their identities. Throughout their socialisation into academia, students are confronted with the paradox of learning as they negotiate the opposing discourses of enslavement and mastery that construct higher education. Utilising a critical discursive psychology approach this research aimed to examine the implications this paradox holds for the development of students’ identities. In-depth interviews with five master’s degree students allowed for an examination of the linguistic resources available for students to draw on in constructing their accounts of student-hood. Analysis of the interpretive repertoires and ideological dilemmas in the text revealed the uptake of contradictory subject positions in participants’ navigation of academic discourse. In order to address the inconsistencies associated with these conflicting ways of being a student, participants ‘worked’ a face in their interactions with academic discourse. Their face-work served to address the paradox by integrating the contradictory positions evident in their accounts. It is in the agency displayed in the integration of these disparate positions that the emancipating student is revealed.
