Abstract:
Shape, texture, and angularity are among the properties of aggregates that have a significant effect on the performance of hot-mix asphalt, hydraulic cement concrete, and unbound base and subbase layers. Consequently, there is a need to develop methods that can quantify aggregate shape properties rapidly and accurately. In this study, an improved version of the Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) was developed to measure the shape characteristics of both fine and coarse aggregates. Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixtures rely on stone-on-stone contacts among particles to resist applied forces and permanent deformation. Aggregates in SMA should resist degradation (fracture and abrasion) under high stresses at the contact points. Aggregates from different sources and types with various shape characteristics were used in this study. The Micro-Deval test was used to measure aggregate resistance to abrasion. The aggregate im

Abstract:

To make bacterial-based self-healing concrete, alkaline-resistant bacterial spores, nutrient sources, and a calcium source are incorporated into a concrete matrix. Two ureolytic spore-forming bacteria, Sporosarcina pasteurii, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, and two non-ureolytic spore-forming bacteria, Bacillus cohnii, and Bacillus pseudofirmus, which have been used in previous studies as bacterial concrete healing agents, were compared in this study. The four bacteria were compared for their (1) sporulation rates on different sporulation agar plates, (2) growth in fi
