Lehmann, Kurt. "Understanding the Effects of Demographic and Socio-Economic Factors on Public Transit Ridership Trends." Scholar Commons, 2018. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7190.

Full text
Abstract:
Public transit, an important mobility service for many, has incurred ridership decline in the U.S. for the past three years. In 2014, U.S. transit ridership was 10.74 billion unlinked passenger trips. In 2015, total ridership was 1.0 percent fewer, and the 2016 decrease was 2.2 percent from 2015. The consistent abandonment of transit in the U.S. does not seem to be ending. In 2017, ridership predicted from year-to-date data is 2.4 percent less than 2016. Furthermore, per capita ridership has decreased 17 percent since 1980. Both the short-term ridership trend and long-term per capita ridership trend is concerning given the increased spending and service provision during the same periods. In seeking to understand the many factors that influence transit ridership trends, it is important to analyze each so that policymakers and practitioners can respond and position transit accordingly. Numerous demographic and economic phenomena help explain this decline in transit use. This research focuses on five of these considerations – age, vehicle availability, telecommuting, fuel price, and geographical distribution of the population.

Tilley, Sara. "Ageing and mobility in Britain : past trends, present patterns and future implications." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/4471.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the next decade the ‘Baby Boomer' cohort will increasingly contribute to the proportion of those aged 60 and over in Britain. The issue of how the mobility of older people has changed for different cohort groups has not been considered in a historical context. Ryder (1965) argued that cohort groups could be important in determining behaviour as have other social structural factors, such as socioeconomic status. This thesis merges the disciplines of transport geography and population studies using a novel approach of cohort analysis, which has not been used widely for studying mobility trends. Using National Travel Survey data from 1995-2008, the mobility trends of older people in Britain are explored by creating pseudo cohorts. Pseudo cohorts are artificially created datasets which are constructed from using repeated cross-sectional data (McIntosh, 2005, Uren, 2006). This technique can differentiate ‘age', ‘period' and ‘cohort' effects in mobility trends. Age effects are differences in behaviour between age groups i.e. changes in mobility associated with age itself. Period effects relate to changes in behaviour in all age groups over a period of time. Cohort effects are those associated with behaviour common to particular groups born around the same time (Glenn, 2005, Yang, 2007). The influence of the Scottish concessionary travel policy on the mobility of older people at the aggregate level is also considered using Scottish Household Survey data from 1999-2008. This policy is very blunt and based on assumptions about older age. As cohorts differ, these assumptions may no longer hold and therefore the policy may not be effective. This thesis argues, using a longitudinal demographic perspective, that structural effects shape mobility of cohorts differently over time. The findings reveal although mobility amongst older people is rising in general, there would actually be declining mobility were it not for the Boomer cohort. Amongst younger cohorts mobility is lower. The analysis also shows that women travel further than men, a fundamental break with the past, specific to this generation. This thesis illustrates the importance of cohort membership in explaining mobility change.

Briand, Christopher H., Susan E. Brazer, and Jeannine M. Harter-Dennis. "Tree-Rings and the Aging of Trees: A Controversy in 19th Century America." Tree-Ring Society, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/262645.

Full text
Abstract:
During the late 19th Century there was considerable debate in the United States among members of the legal profession, the general public and even some scientists about the validity of using tree rings to determine tree age. In an earlier boundary dispute case in Maryland (1830) the Honorable Theodorick Bland rejected the use of tree rings to establish the date when a purported witness tree was marked with an identifying blaze. Bland did not believe that there was enough scientific evidence or legal precedent to support this idea. A review of the current scientific literature of the time, however, indicates that most scientists, especially in Europe, accepted that tree rings could be used to determine age. In the United States, however, this idea was debated, particularly in the late 19th Century, in both the popular press and scientific publications. The main argument of opponents such as A. L. Child was that the number of tree rings was often wildly in excess of the known age of the tree. These inconsistencies were likely because of the inexperience of the observer, mistaking earlywood and latewood for separate rings, and the presence of a small number of false rings, sometimes called secondary rings. The great ages reported for the giant sequoias may have also raised doubts among the public. Among scientists, however, the relationship between ring number and tree age and between ring width and climate became widely accepted. Several cases heard in both Federal and State Courts as well as Bernhard E. Fernow’s Age of Trees and Time of Blazing Determined by Annual Rings laid to rest any doubt of the relationship between tree rings and age in temperate forests, i.e. one ring equals one year’s growth, and showed that the date when a witness tree was blazed could be easily determined from a cross-section of the trunk.

Abstract:
K dosažení tohoto cíle jsme provedli optická, elektrická a optoelektrická měření ACTFEL struktur a ZnS:Mn luminoforů. Navíc jsme studovali vliv dotování vrstvy pomocí KCl na chování mikrostruktury a na elektroluminiscenční vlastnosti (zejména na jas a světelnou účinnost) ZnS:Mn luminoforů. Provedli jsme i některá, ne zcela obvyklá, měření ACTFEL součástek. Vypočítali jsme i rozptylový poměr nabitých barevných center a simulovali transportní charakteristiky v ACTFEL součástkách. Studovali jsme vliv stárnutí dvou typů ZnS:Mn luminoforů (s vrstvou napařenou či získanou pomocí epitaxe atomových vrstev) monitorováním závislostí svítivost-napětí (L-V), velikost vnitřního náboje - elektrické pole luminoforu (Q-Fp) a kapacitance-napětí (C-V) ve zvolených časových intervalech v průběhu stárnutí.

The trend of aging population incresing has become globalization today. 2011,the first year of an era of retiring from job coming by the baby boomer after world war Ⅱ.Those days babies had been 65 years old since then. Futhermore, the trend of fewer children causes an indirect effect to put an up-going construction on aging population;this ,also, helps the in- creasing. The development like this will certainly bring a very wide and important influence to the global society. It means that the focus of the global society will hereafter transform from demography, economic sci-ence, sociology, and the discussions on the policy of social wellfare, food, energy etc. into the silver caring and silver economics. This study collects datas and references by the way of taking individual interviews. The targets are Hotel managers and scholars related to the activities of wellness tourism in Taiwan. Three of them are the managers from marked and representative Hotel in the leisure Hotel field;two of them are the teachers from University Dining and Hotel management Depart-ment in midland Taiwan, and one of the scholars owns rich experiences in practical Dining and Hotel management. Through the depth of interviews there are elementary conclusions made as thus: Due to the influence of the baby boom, the population of Taiwan is also speedly getting aging under the trend of aging globalization. It had become a common sence among those interview targets. However,it seems that most managers are still stand passive way on planning wellness tourism market even facing that great opportunity brought by the needs of agings and their consuming power;Meanwhile, the whole surroundings of the market also lies without aggressive power to meet the trend. This study offers a few proposals to meet the conclusions above. Being of the limitations,it is a pity that proposals cover limited opinions. The researcher in the future are suggested to make more and further discussions with the related business managers and scholars domestic and inter- national,as well as the policy makers. Hoping that may help the related study advanced, and may offer more ideas to the aging travelers and the Hotel managers. So that the industry side, government side, and school side can get union and make more contributions to serve the aging people,to help economics developing and benefit our society.

The issue of population aging has been paid more attention in recent years. According to a survey by Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRT), the population aged 65 and over in Taiwan will be more than twenty percent of the whole population in 2025, indicating the fact that our society will become the so-called "Super-Aging Society" (Industrial Technology Research Institute, 2015). The statistics show the major problems that the society is going to face. However, this study argues that the infrastructures in Taiwan are unable to cope with this phenomenon, especially in the respect of open space. Since 1990, the Government of Taiwan has promoted “Act for Promotion of Private Participation in Infrastructure Projects” to encourage the civic institutions to devote themselves to public constructions, hoping to establish civic sports centers or green space through private funds for the purpose to enhance the demand and usage of outdoor space. Nonetheless, the excessive emphasis of the middle- and young-aged people as the major users underestimates the real demands of the elderly; therefore, the designs of most facilities are similar and not effective to meet the requirements of the elderly today, not to mention the ways to cater to the future need. Taking New Taipei City Xin Zhuang Stadium as the core for discussion, this study aims to investigate the current status of the site in terms of participatory observation, field notes and affordance to find out the public’s actual needs for open space, so as to review the design planning as well as the suitability of the open space.

The main purpose of this study is to explore as well compare the elderly well-being between the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas under the trend of aging in place. Each 120 elderly persons at age over 65 with the capability to take care of themselves living in metropolitan area of Taipei and non-metropolitan area of Yilan County were recruited, totally 240 subjects. Content of the survey questionnaire is divided into three sections of personal background, personality trait, and environment part. A total of 240 questionnaires were issued and all were responded, with recovery rate at 100%. The questionnaire data were statistically analyzed by descriptive statistics, Lamabda correlation coefficient and independent t test. Based on the findings and discussion, results of the survey are summarized as follows: I.Variables of the elderly individual background in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas Variable of individual backgrounds significantly associated with well-being in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas include: living situation of family members, type of residence, personal main income source, transport conditions, personal health status and getting along status among family members. II.The personality traits of the elderly in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas Regardless of the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, there are significant differences between personal trait and well-being in which the variation in non-metropolitan was higher than that of metropolitan. III.The environment of the elderly in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas There were no significant differences between the senior citizens in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas in terms of the "community relations", "living type" and "environmental satisfaction"; however, the variation in metropolitan area is higher than that of non-metropolitan area. With regard to the aspects of "transport", "medicine" and "social activities participation", there were significant differences in "transport" and "medicine" between metropolitan area and non-metropolitan areas. Finally, based on the literature and research results, this study proposes recommendations for the elderly in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas as follows: I.Metropolitan area (A)Recommend the government and community care stronghold to organize more courses of spiritual growth in order to impart correct concepts. (B)Promote and establish friendly transport environment for the elderly and utilize local cable systems to set up exclusively channel for the elderly. (C)Increase the numbers of professional social workers and counseling staffs of community care stronghold to enhance the intensity of well-being. (D)Increase the proportion of mobile medical care of clinics and community and imitate the separation of prescribing and dispensing implemented in Japan. II.Non-metropolitan area (A)Recommend the local government and community care stronghold should continue to create a friendly elderly environment. (B)Promote and establish environment friendly elderly transport environment, and subsidize civil transport industry to invest on public transportation business of the elderly. (C)Recommend the Government to continue to improve the medical services, resources and facilities as well as to implement telemedicine measure, so that the elderly can enjoy comprehensive medical and implementation of telemedicine measures. (D)Family members should give more care, comfort and listen to the elderly to narrow the distance between each other and increase the extent of elderly healthy and family harmony.

Abstract:
In recent decades a number of new trends have evolved. Ageing population, increased urbanization, growth of technology, e-commerce expansion, changes in social views, and other developments have significant influence on the conventional industries. In this rapidly changing environment, businesses find themselves under pressure when analyzing market trends and planning their industry activities. Adam Opel AG, the automotive company, provided the author the opportunity to conduct research on the basis of a dissertation internship, addressing three main questions that have arisen within the industry forecasting team of the long-term planning department. “Who will buy new cars?” This question addresses major demographic challenges in Europe such as ageing population, immigration, social transformation and other. The author investigates how these tendencies impact vehicle sales and vehicle design. “What car and technology does the new customer want?” Today’s increased population density has led to serious congestion and environmental problems. The author looks into how European governments address these matters, encouraging the development of the electric vehicle market, and how European minds respond to these challenges. “What is the risk and value from new automotive business models?” New businesses appeared in a result of population density increase, e-commerce expansion, and new European minds that support collaborative consumption. The author analyzes how automotive companies can join and benefit from these new businesses. As a result of the research, the author advises on several aspects: forecasted vehicle demand, changes in vehicle car design and technology, and suggests several models for joining new businesses.

Abstract:
The increasing average life expectancy found in recent decades contributed to the problem of the aging population. Current evidence points to changes in variable degree of the different components of the immune system. Innate immunity has become less effective in the elderly due to changes found in the number and function of its effector cells, including neutrophils, natural killer cells and dendritic cells. In acquired immunity there were also found changes in the functionof B cells, but there was not a significant change in their number with aging. T cells are particularly affected by immunosenescence and adjustments were identified both in the number and function of the most studied subpopulations. Among these, regulatory T cells are given particular attention because they appear to be potential therapeutic targets for diseases such as cancer. Thymus atrophy is one factor considered as promotor of T cell senescence, as it contributes to reduced efficacy of cellular immunity against antigens, to the occurrence of autoimmune phenomena and to the reduction of the number of naïve T cells. It is thought that the changes arising from immunosenescence may partly explain the increased incidence of certain age-related diseases and greater susceptibility to infection, cancer, autoimmune phenomena and a lower response to vaccination. The better understanding of the immune system aging processes may allow the development of effective preventive methods and therapeutic approaches to age-related diseases. In recent years several strategies have been developed in order to prevent or minimize the effects of immunosenescence, however most had no significant clinical applicability. These consist in the administration of recombinant cytokines, monoclonal antibodies, hormonal methods, antioxidants as well as dietary changes and regular physical exercise, in order to promote healthy aging and minimize the morbidity and mortality of the elderly.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of most prevalent progressive neurodegenerative disease. It is believed that the main pathology of AD is given rise by accumulated neuronal plaques and tangle formations in the brain. Previous studies indicated that abnormally in the genes APP, PSEN1, PSEN2, and APOE are high risk factors to AD. In spite of much research efforts the underlying pathophysiology of AD remains unclear. Here, our goal is to gain new insight into possible genetic causes of AG and brain region-specific AD. We used a novel approach, Gene Selection by Trend of disease Progression (GSToP), to construct state-specific gene-gene interaction networks, and to identify hub genes and significant AG and AD related changes in pathways in which specific hub genes play major roles. We used for our study six sets of publically available microarray dataset: one set from brains tissues of people of a wide range of ages not known to have AD or similar brain disorders, and five sets from tissues of five brain regions – entorhinal cortex, hippocampus, medial temporal gyrus, posterior cingulate, and superior frontal gyrus – of AD patients and controls. We use the method of trend of disease progression for our study. We used GSToP to construct two – experiment(exp) and control – gene-gene interaction networks (GGINs) for each dataset, identified as hub genes those whose connectivities underwent significant changes in the two networks, and then used the sub-GGINs connected to these hub genes to identify KEGG pathways whose enrichments in experiment and control were significantly different. There was significant difference between the top-10 hub genes for AG and for AD, as well among the top-10 hub genes for specific AD regions. Known AG target genes found in the top-10 AG hub genes include EP300, MDM2, HSPA8, and EGFR, and known AD target genes separately found in top-10 AD hub genes include GAPDH (in EC and PC), APP (PC), and TUBB (SFG). Many significantly enriched pathways were identified for AG and AD. The relationship between the set of enriched pathways found for AG and those for region-specific AD was heterogenic. Pathways found for AG include Wnt signaling pathway (hsa04310) and ubiquitin mediated proteolysis (hsa04120). Pathways found for AD in at least two brain regions include Alzheimer’s disease (hsa05010), pathogenic Escherichia coli infection (hsa0130), Fc gamma R-mediated pathagocytosis (hsa04666), proteasome (hsa03050), and neurotrophin signaling pathway (hsa04722).

Abstract:
Our position in the labour market is conditioned by a number of features (age, state of health, education, sex, ethnic origin) which define groups of people who are more endangered by a loss of job and predestined to be unemployed. Each of these groups has its specific problems or ``obstacles`` which prevent them from getting a job again. One of these groups includes people over fifty years of age. If an individual has problems to find a job at the beginning or in the middle of their carrier life, their chances of getting a job as they grow older are even smaller. Many people have to face the crisis of basic social securities. Situations when a person is, in a very short time, permanently separated from the results of their long-term efforts, from their social status, their colleagues and income are fairly frequent. The objective of the work was to define the obstacles which hinder unemployed people of over fifty years of age from finding a job, and to point out the issue of unemployment in this age group. The research was carried out in the Labour Bureau in České Budějovice and in the Labour Bureau in Strakonice. Methods of qualitative research were used, specifically a Questionnaire and an Analysis of the content of documents. The following hypotheses were determined: 1. The greatest obstacle preventing people older than fifty from finding a job is the lack of qualifications. 2. Along with an improvement of the situation in the labour market the number of unemployed people in this age category registered in the Labour Bureau decreases. The hypotheses were confirmed. The research showed that the greatest obstacle for these unemployed people are their qualifications which are insufficient and do not correspond with the current requirements of the labour market. It was also discovered that the number of people in the 50+ category increases or decreases depending on the general development of the unemployment rate. However, changes in the 50+ category are not very significant, and therefore, the ratio of applicants in the 50+ category keeps increasing as compared to the total number of job applicants. That is why the 50+ category rightly ranks among risky groups of unemployed people. In order to improve the chances of the 50+ workers in the labour market, it is necessary to improve their professional qualifications, eliminate age discrimination and modify working conditions in such a way to enable these people to find a job even in spite of various health restrictions. Elderly workers would have to change their opinion regarding retaining a job, their attitude to acquiring new skills and they would have to become more flexible to match the present labour market. The issue of unemployment of people over fifty years of age is and will be topical since it can be expected that the trend of ageing of the population and the increasingly dynamic features of the economy based on modern technologies, will make it increasingly difficult for such people to find a job.
