Abstract:
Abstract Investing in agriculture is characterized by a long payback period and therefore requires a competent investment management to control resources attracted to small agribusiness sector. The purpose of the research is to develop an investment management mechanism of small agribusiness and substantiate practical proposals for attracting investments in the development of the farming sector based on assessing competitiveness. The object of the research is small-scale farming households. The subject of the research is investment activity of regional agribusinesses. The article clarifies the theoretical understanding of ‘investment management’ in relation to small agribusiness, and defines the economic tools for attracting investment in the agricultural sector. The authors have developed a phased investment management mechanism, taking into account the factor characteristics of agricultural production. Based on the method of cluster analysis, regional strategic interests and assessment of small agribusiness competitiveness in the agricultural market, the authors have proposed a certain strategy to select peasant farms for the provision of state support. The article has shown the main aspects of investing in small agribusiness and demonstrated the role of state support for peasant farms in ensuring effective manufacturing of agricultural products. The results of the work can be used by regional authorities for the development of management impact on the investment activity of small agribusinesses.

Abstract:
The article is a development of a variation of the methodology for developing a strategy for the development of an enterprise in the field of agribusiness. The strategic development line for an agribusiness enterprise is based on a detailed analysis of the external environment and a comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of the potential of the internal environment, but the emphasis in the development strategy, unified for all agribusiness enterprises in Russia, should be uniform, as the results of this work show. Many agribusiness enterprises are not able to use a development strategy, due to the fact that they have a weak internal potential that does not allow them to realize the opportunities provided to them by a favorable external environment. An agribusiness that is in a different position, in order to use all the benefits available to enterprises that use the traditional approach in forming a development strategy, must first use a comprehensive analysis. Agromarketing is singled out as the main direction aimed at strengthening and developing the internal environment of the agribusiness organization. Agromarketing, based on the principles of customer orientation, realizing all the needs and requirements of a potential consumer of agricultural products.

Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of distinct marketing strategies—product, promotion, price, and place strategies—on the performance of agribusinesses in the North-Central region of Nigeria. Leveraging a sample size of 338 from a population of 2,216 registered agribusinesses across five selected states, a cross-sectional survey design was employed to analyze the relationships between the chosen independent variables and critical performance indicators namely; profit, sales volume, market share, and customer loyalty. The results from four regression models underscore the degree of impacts of marketing strategies on performance metrics. Notably, promotion and place strategies emerge as significant drivers of increased sales volume and enhanced customer loyalty, respectively. Conversely, product strategy exhibits a minimal effect on profit, while price strategy strongly influences market share. These findings offer actionable insights for agribusiness practitioners and policymakers to optimize their marketing approaches for improved performance and sustainable performance in the agribusiness sector.

Abstract:
Master of Science
Department of Agricultural Economics
Kevin Dhuyvetter
This research analyzes how crop farms can achieve a higher net income per acre than other operations by farming fundamentally differently than others. There are many factors that are important to the long-term viability of today’s crop operations, one of which is how farms profitability compares with other operations. This determines farms’ ability to compete for land, outlast other operations through periods of unprofitability, and produce crops at long run equilibrium prices. These factors are relevant in today’s crop production industry where farms sit on a segment of the agribusiness supply chain. Therefore, in the interest of providing farms relevant information to manage their operations, this research analyzes how farms can distinguish their performance from other operations by accessing land and equipment resources, production practices for growing crops, and focusing their management efforts differently than other operations. There are three parts to this analysis. First, farms are broken down by characteristics, practices, and management performances. Then an econometric analysis quantifies the integrated correlation between farms’ distinguished characteristics, practices, and management performances and their distinguished net incomes per acre. Next a standard deviation analysis measures the degree to which farms are capable of distinguishing particular characteristics, practices, and management performances from other operations. Lastly, the performance of farms over the 2001 to 2010 time period is used to quantify how feasible it is for farms to maintain particular differences from other operations. Data used in this analysis were provided by the Kansas Farm Management Association, Kansas State University’s Department of Agricultural Economics, and Kansas’s National Agricultural Statistics Service office. The results suggest the way farms distinguish their characteristics, practices, and management performances from other operations impacts how their net income compares to other operations. The econometric analysis found that relative farm size, share of rented acres, the value of overhead and equipment investment per acre, government payments, planting intensity, risk, and cost, yield, and price management performances were all significantly related to farms’ relative net income. In regards to farms’ comparative profitability, this suggests farms should be aware of how their characteristics, practices, and management performances compare to other operations. The results also suggest the degree to which and the consistency with which farms can distinguish particular characteristics, practices, and management performances are different from one another. Over the 2001 to 2010 period, Kansas farms distinguished their characteristics from other operations to a larger degree than they distinguished their practices and management performances. Farms also maintained differences in their characteristics more consistently than they maintained differences in their practices and management performances. This suggests farms that are actively seeking to distinguish their net income per acre from other operations should be aware of the degree and consistency with which they can maintain particular differences from other operations.

Abstract:
Economic power in vertical relationships within a supply chain is, frequently, an ambiguous theme in economic theory. Notwithstanding, this ambiguous theme is a key element of applied economic analysis in real world cases, especially for antitrust offices. The citrus agribusiness system in Sao Paulo state presented several of these analytical ambiguities and, it was also target of antitrust adjudications, at least in two different and important periods of its organizational evolution. Economic power is a central issue on these adjudications and, therefore, the research question of this thesis is: is power affects the institutional arrangement formation in citrus sector? Using theoretical backgrounds on Transaction Costs Economics, both governance and measurement branches, I investigated the transaction of oranges between citrus growers and juice processor firms, in terms of: (1) contract definition, i.e. the contract terms selection process; and (2) make-or-buy decision, regarding the increasing partial and backward vertical integration of juice processor firms into orange production. This work uses mixed methods of investigation, because it is a case study combined with an econometric analysis of vertical integration path in the sector. Thus, the empirical investigation is constituted by two parts. The first one is a content analysis of contract and antitrust documents, in order to verify the influence of juice processor\'s economic power over contract terms selection. My main findings indicated that contract terms can be selected for the purpose of create contractual gaps and, consequently, attributes remain unspecified and consumed without any marginal payment. Additionally, Brazilian antitrust office used different kind of interventions in two distinct situations in the same case, which demonstrates improvements in the remedies to deal with contractual problems in vertical relationships. The second one consists in an econometric model to clarify the determinants of the backward partial vertical integration of juice processor. Econometric evidences suggest that antitrust intervention in 1995 is positively related to the increasing vertical integration in later period. Economic power also determined the increase in vertical integration, but efficiencies in transaction costs, in terms of relationship specific investments, is also a significant factor. Thus, economic power (strategizing) and economizing in transaction costs are not mutually exclusive and its trade offs would be the starting point for the economic analysis of this particular case. This thesis contributes to the understanding of strategic interaction of firms, especially the vertical relationships in the context of agribusiness sector (the organization of transactions between farmers and food processing industries). These contractual relationships and the role played by vertical integration in the orange juice sector have implications to competitive strategies and to antitrust analyses.

It was conducted a case study, descriptive, qualitative, ex post facto, and cross-sectional. The data collecting was carried out on 17 interviews which took place between July and September 2015 in the municipalities of Petrolina / PE and Juazeiro / BA, which sought to identify and analyze the most relevant strategic interactions of the players. The data collected allowed proposing a nomenclature for each class and identifying the dynamics of interactions between producers, competitors, suppliers and customers. Among the most important emerging findings was that the most relevant interactions were not individual, but interdependent, where the development of interactions impact on other interactions, which ultimately impact the business strategy. Still, three interrelated factors that need attention were identified: export windows, meteorology and biology. Finally from these finding was proposed a relational diagrammatic model of interactions between the industry players.

The companies demand for tools that allow them to manage and control their strategic actions grows in the current scenario. Thus, the present study aimed to understand the alignment of organizational strategies and practices of human resources management in an agribusiness company, based on the use of strategic tools such as the Balanced Scorecard and the Strategic Map. For that, a qualitative exploratory research was developed, systematizing from a case study, the process of strategic management, the alignment of organizational strategies, the BSC, the Strategic Map and the RH practices. It was identified with the study, that the strategy modalities used in the organization, previously predominantly emergent, became more deliberate. The BSC and the Strategic Map will contribute to the strategic management through the explication of the organizational objectives for all the hierarchical levels of the company; within the organization, managers are responsible for disseminating, monitoring and measuring strategies and their alignment to their respective teams; It was also observed that, HR practices partially contemplate the demands of the organizational strategy, being proposed actions of improvements; And with the work developed, managers were made aware of the relevance and contributions of strategic alignment.

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
This work presents a Methodology to the Formulation and Implementation of the Strategy Process in Farm Companies, and a critical appreciation of this process in the farm company. By means of this proposition we attempt to stand out the actual level of importance and recognition that farm companies represent as a powerful factor in economical promotion disclosed by the agribusiness thematic. This methodology of strategic administration, specific to the farm companies, tried to consider the strategy process characteristics found in the literature at the same time that it embodies the methodologies used by the farm companies which formed the corpus of this research as well as it is in accordance with the particular characteristics of this kind of company. Analyzing how rural producers formulate and establish their strategies, and according to the administration theory, these methodologies were discussed through a table of methodologies. This table contains the basic steps of strategic administration process, the steps enclosed in the methodologies proposed by the authors considered in the research, the steps of the methodologies used by the researched farm companies, the incremental techniques that these companies use specially in the context regarding the beginning of the Strategy Process and also the implementation of this Process. These made it possible to reach a more accurate identification of those steps that were the base to the Methodology of Formulation and Implementation of the Strategy Process in Farm Companies that this work proposes. Once this work is considered a case study in the category of multicase study, some data collecting procedures were used like interviews, documental analysis; direct observation and partake observation. The work is also characterized as exploratory regarding its objectives and qualitative considering its nature. In general terms, the key conclusion of this study was the shortage of the methodologies studied in the literature in opposition to what came out from the field research in relation to: (I) the matter of people preparation to the changes, (II) Company suitability, (III) shared formulation, (IV) strategy implementation and (V) a control based on budget and indexes, (VI) and moreover the link between strategic indexes and salary plan. Based on these results, the methodology presented in this work suggests as the first step in the process of Strategy Formulation what we call Preparation/Sensibilization. The second step is called Strategic Creativity that is simply the beginning of the strategy formulation. In the proposed methodology, the strategy begins with the formulation of the View of the company future. The third step corroborate in two parts (internal and external environment evaluation) with the common prescribed step sequence of the basic strategic process methodologies analyzed and it also includes a stage perceived in the field research, the evaluation of the actual performance of the company. This evaluation of the actual performance is the condition to grant the performance indexes formulation that is present in future steps of the process. The fourth step of the proposed methodology is the Formulation which includes the Budget creation, Macro-strategies, and indexes. The fifth step begins with the second important aspect of the strategy process as described by Andrews which is related to the formulation, the Implementation. At last, we have the Control stage. These six stages are compound of internal phases and are in a permanent feedback process. Finally, we can conclude that beyond the use of this specific methodology the farm companies need to recognize the presence of variable that they affect particularly in its external environment and that they influence the relationship directly enter the Strategic Process and the performance of the company. The presence of these external intervening variable characterizes the Farm Companies as of fragile, particular, unstable and perverse nature in the treatment of the Strategic Administration.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the phenomenon of geographical and sectional concentration of companies (clusters), whose importance in the creation of competitive advantages and also in the regional development have been studied and reported in specialized literature. Considering the importance of agribusiness in the Brazilian social-economic context and the lack of academic studies concerning with, agribusiness clusters, the present research was performed in two localities of State of São Paulo: Holambra and Mogi das Cruzes, both characterized by the flowers and ornamental plants agribusiness concentration. The main objectives of this thesis are the following: elaborate a theoretic-conceptual structure for flowers agribusiness cluster; identify the main inductive factors inducing for the establishment joint action between the actors of the productive chain; and, verify the inductive factors in innovation and in local collective competences building. Due to the complexity of the studied phenomenon, the field research design encompasses both qualitative and quantitative (survey) approaches. The main results founded show that: the adequacy of the framework analysis proposed; the ethnic factor influences in the cooperation and local competitive advantages building related issues; the joint actions among the actors of the locality, specially agricultural producers, did not depended on the public power coordination; the studied geographical cluster allows to increase joint actions, specifically among the agricultural producers, stimulated by the agricultural producers associations and by the cooperative societies.

This thesis deals with issues associated with organizational dimensions and internationalization of companies operating in the agribusiness Valley Fruit, located in the Lower Basin of the São Francisco River and semi-arid region of Brazil` northeastern. The general objective was to analyze the association, over time, between the organizational dimensions in the context of internationalization. In this sense, the ultimate purpose was to build from the dynamics of associations and internationalization, a theoretical and dynamic framework to the Miolo Wine Group. To do that, it was considering the following organizational dimensions: corporate governance, process training of internationalization strategy, strategy content, internal environment, external environment, perceived risk and, finally, entrepreneurship The methodological procedures, of a qualitative research, were based on Adaptive Theory establishing a continuous loop between the theories and empirical discoveries until the depletion of data sources. For this study, two different moments of collection and analysis were performed. A total of twelve in-depth interviews were conducted with ten top executives of the companies selected for the study. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed with the support of Atlas.ti, software adopted as a tool for the analysis procedures. The analysis of documents related to the companies and agribusiness in general also took place. For theoretical findings, it is presented a graphic simulation of the associations between organizational dimensions in the context of internationalization. For data analysis, it is concluded that the listed dimensions, through multicases study, were observed in practice and are related to the internationalization of business process and each of these make up the Organizational Dimensions of pool in the international context . Regarding the proposition of theoretical and dynamic framework, we have that (i) the association, through the stages, between organizational dimensions in the context of the internationalization of a business group operating in agribusiness, as well as (ii) it is recognized if, from the perception of the founder, not only the organizational dimensions vary in degree of intensity through the stages, as may also be responsible for promoting, on occasion, from opposing forces, a negative relationship of association.

Abstract:
Plant breeding is the very first step of agro-industrial systems. It is responsible for creating new varieties and providing farmers with the seeds to be used in agricultural production to supply the country\'s demand. The present study aims to investigate the establishment of private entities engaged in plant breeding, belonging to groups of farmers. The observation of this phenomenon can assist the development of institutional mechanisms for strengthening collective actions, especially if they are of public interest and important as a strategy for the Brazilian agribusiness. It is intended, therefore, to answer the following research question: What are the incentives for collective organizations to engage in plant breeding? The present investigation is classified as qualitative with exploratory purposes. It is based on a multiple case study and takes account the concepts of the economics of organizations using specific motivational variables divided into two dimensions: institutional environment and market structure. The organizations are: Cooperativa Central Gaúcha Ltda. - CCGL, Cooperativa Central de Pesquisa Agrícola - Coodetec, Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira - CTC, Fundação de Apoio à Pesquisa Agropecuária de Mato Grosso - Fundação MT, and Instituto Mato-Grossense do Algodão - IMAmt. We observed remarkable differences in structure, strategy and other variables analyzed in organizations, making any kind of comparison difficult. Although the suggested hypotheses have not been confirmed - i.e. that the organizations have arisen to compete in the seed market or to exercise bargaining power against big companies-the assessment of some motivational variables suggests that the gains of the farmers could be driving the research conducted by the organizations toward their own interests and, in the short term, to access new varieties. Funding research in a collective action allows reduction of their high costs. The findings also indicate some concern of respondents about the low rate of supply of new varieties to the market and genetic narrowing which increases susceptibility of crops to pests. Finally, one can question the sustainability of organizations in a fiercely competitive environment, considering that they have been structured to compensate the limitations of public research. Lastly, it was noted in the interviews, that there is a movement in collective organizations towards improving marketing strategies, by taking advantage of legal mechanisms available, such as the Plant Variety Protection Law and building partnerships with multinational companies.

Abstract:
A análise empírica envolve duas abordagens: a qualitativa e quantitativa.
Make or contract is the strategic issue addressed in this dissertation. In this thesis I shall investigate the market of agricultural mechanization services within the scope and limits of the agricultural firm. The question to be investigated focuses on the reasons for the predominance of the option for ownership of the equipment by farmers It is emphasized that a cut was made with respect to agricultural crops for the study, the Agribusiness Systems selected were sugarcane and soybeans. To settle this proposition it is used the New Institutional Economics as a theoretical basis. The concepts of Transaction Cost Economics and its strategy to save on transaction costs are elements that underlie the hypotheses on the choice of institutional arrangements. The scenario of transactions is the institutional environment and the institutions are responsible for the rules which govern them; justifying the sectorial analysis of the market for mechanized services. The Theory of the Growth of the Firm is used to explain the emergence of this new market. The empirical analysis involves two approaches: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative analyzes the SAG\'s of soy and sugarcane, and then the analysis of the institutional environment and the rules surrounding outsourcing in the country for finally a sectorial analysis of the mechanical harvesting services market to be developed based the theoretical framework. In the quantitative approach a comparison is made between the operational costs of acquiring harvesters and contracting external providers; followed by a probit model to investigate the relationship between contracting or not a service of mechanized harvesting. As a result of analysis of the institutional environment, it was shown that there are ambiguous rules regarding subcontracting, which sometimes discourages and penalizes those who choose to hire. A sectorial analysis of the mechanical harvesting services market in SAG of soy and cane sugar was made hrough two case studies. In-depth interviews were conducted with providers and stakeholders of mechanized harvesting services. As a prominent result of the analysis it appears that the services arise from farmers (100%) who had decided to optimize their machines, and also that the majority (63%) operates informally. This result supports the first hypothesis (H1) on the emergence of the Theory of Growth of the Firm services. Then the first quantitative analysis it is found that the operational costs of integrating and contracting services are very close if the option is to buy a machine in cash or to contract. But when financed property does not become a good financial option. In another quantitative step an econometric model was developed and investigated the relationship between to contract or not mechanized harvesting service, related with the temporal and locational specificity, previous contracts and the negative influence of the institutional environment. The idealized model and the survey results are the assumptions related to asset specificity (H2) and the existence of successful contracts in the past (H3) were validated with significance level of 5% The related institutional environment (H4) despite being significant event has not been validated, it has the opposite effect to that expected. Therefore, qualitative and quantitative data were used. It was concluded as planned that most producers are vertically integrated (67.2%) and that the option is not financial and that transaction costs matter in making these decisions. Attention now turns to the next suggested steps such as expanding the study to new crops and agricultural services.

Abstract:
The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023 - 2027 is currently the main instrument of the member states for the development of the agricultural sector and rural areas. CAP is focused on ten key objectives related to social, environmental and economic goals. EU agricultural policy covers all levels covers all levels of agri-food supply chain. The Romania CAP Strategic Plan was approved by the European Commission in December 2022 with a total allocation of 15.83 billions (14,96 billions from EU budget and 0,86 billion national funding). The main type of interventions for direct payments to farmers promoted by Romanian Strategic Plan are: basic income support for sustainability, complementary redistributive income support for sustainability, complementary income support for young farmers, environmentally friendly practices applicable to arable land, practicing environmentally friendly agriculture in small farms (traditional households). These financial instruments are supported through the European agricultural guarantee fund (EAGF). According to the Romanian Payments and Intervention Agency for Agriculture, for the 2023 campaign, a number of 759,976 payment requests were submitted for an area of over 9.98 million hectares. European environmental and agricultural policies play a key role to increase competitiveness and sustainability of agricultural systems. Even if the agricultural policy instruments and strategic plans contribute to the development of the agricultural sector, there is still a need for simplification, diversification and specific measures depending on the particularities of the agribusiness field.

Abstract:
In modern-day conditions, sustainable territorial development aims to find additional opportunities for regions to maintain their competitiveness while maximizing the use of available local resources and creating conditions for investment in activities that preserve, maintain and improve the local environment. Activities such as fishing, the production of fishery and aquaculture products; coastal tourism; blue biotechnology fall within the scope of the so-called "blue economy". The Blue growth strategy is focused on the sustainable territorial development of fishing areas by supporting, initiating change and integrating the efforts of all stakeholders to achieve the strategic objectives. The main purpose of this report is to present the results of a survey which examines the attitudes of local business representatives, public administration and academics towards the development of activities in the coastal zone of the Local Fisheries Initiative Group (FLAG) Varna - Beloslav - Aksakovo within the blue economy. On the basis of a future development strategy, strategic areas of development are outlined.

Kessler, Matthew, Annsofie Wahlström, Hanna Weiber-Post, and Ylva Carlqvist Warnborg. Exploring the future of meat : navigating complex topics for better decision making. SLU Future food, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.55n5kd18dl.

Full text
Abstract:
This report draws on insights gleaned from putting together the project The future of meat – storytelling and dialogues for improved decision making from 2021-2023, integrating lessons from expert interviews, podcast production, and facilitated workshops. The project was initiated by the SLU Future Food platform at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), and developed and produced by TABLE, which is a food systems collaboration between the University of Oxford, SLU, and Wageningen University and Research. The aim of the project was to reflect on our own viewpoints and to foster mutual understanding and enhance the clarity of conversations around the role of meat and livestock in our societies and for our planet, rather than to intensify differences or argue over right and wrong. We also wanted to explore how stakeholders reach different conclusions and the implications of inaction. The diverse experts we engaged in the project (see Appendix) each aimed to contribute to a ‘good’, sustainable, and equitable future for food. However, due to differing values, professional and academic trainings, and geographic contexts, visions for the future of meat and livestock vary, and this variation is often intensified by the way information circulates in “echo chambers” across media ecosystems. As these experts articulated their visions, motivations, and pathways toward a sustainable food future, we learned that these varied viewpoints often complement rather than conflict with each other. Addressing multifaceted challenges like nutrition, biodiversity conservation, climate mitigation, animal ethics, and social justice indeed requires a spectrum of solutions. For example, rebalancing animal-sourced foods consumptions – increasing it in low- and middle-income countries and decreasing it in high-income countries – could improve health and environmental outcomes. Thus, the project underscores the necessity of embracing diverse perspectives and engaging in meaningful dialogues, forming the basis of a well-rounded strategy for the future of meat and livestock. Recognizing that meat holds different meanings for different people is crucial in moving towards a more sustainable and healthy food system. Adopting an inclusive approach is key to reducing polarization and enhancing the quality of decision-making in this sector. This report is thus divided into two main sections, each directed towards different target groups who contribute to a sustainable food future in different ways. The first section is intended for those with direct power to influence our food systems, including retailers, policymakers and food and agribusiness leaders. In that section, we offer key takeaways and highlight shared understandings and desires to inform decisions towards a more sustainable food future. The second section caters to educators and facilitators striving to improve the quality of dialogues on complex topics. Facilitating dialogues on complex topics is time and resource-intensive but pivotal for steering society toward a more sustainable, resilient, and just future. As mentioned above, the key findings of the project stem from the contributions of a diverse array of experts including scientists, food producers, CEOs, policymakers, and civil society representatives from across the globe, ensuring that the evidence collected in the project is comprehensive and not restricted to perspectives from any single, like-minded group. However, some large-scale, efficient meat producers, whose insights we sought, opted not to participate. This report does not rely on a systematic or comprehensive review of the existing scientific literature on the topics covered. Instead, it synthesizes contributions from the wide range of thoughtful experts, each known for their long-standing experience in this field, who generously shared their knowledge for this project. Finally, if you choose to apply learnings from our project in your work, we are eager to continue the conversation with you.
