The paper substantiates the theoretical foundations of the formation of agricultural territorial-industrial cluster associations, the mechanism of their effective functioning and ensuring the competitiveness of integrated business entities. The structural model of the regional association of agro-industrial clusters and cooperatives is justified. The proposed model of regional cluster integration includes industry-specific product clusters. It is proposed to create an agricultural service cooperative at the village level, and a multifunctional service cooperative at the district level.

In this chapter, the authors have taken the Moroccan agriculture cooperatives as a case of cooperative longevity and survival in order to observe the evolution and processes of adaptation to the distinct economic, social, and environmental demands of a broad range of member-owners. The demands of the farming community, members, and society have resulted in social and environmental factors being as much a priority as economic aspects.

Most accounts of African Americans’ relationship to the soil focus on oppression and exploitation. This book offers the untold history of Black farmers’ fight to stay on the land in the southern United States, using agricultural cooperatives as a basis for resistance and community self-determination. This chapter introduces slave gardens as resistance, the Colored Farmers Alliance, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, and food and agriculture in the civil rights and Black Power movements as precursors to the examples of black agricultural cooperatives in Freedom Farmers. These cooperatives demonstrate what White calls collective agency and community resilience, using the primary strategies of prefigurative politics, economic autonomy, and commons as praxis. The archival, ethnographic, and interview-based methods of the book are grounded in the African principle of sankofa: investigating the past to understand the present as a basis of forging a future of our own making.

Part of the response of rural people to the isolation they experience is to create associations, such as savings and loans associations and formal cooperatives. The critical question is how these institutions can be taken to scale. This chapter argues that the successful transformation of African agriculture lies in the effective integration of smallholder farmers into modernizing value chains. A food value chain describes the complicated process of transformation involving a sequence of events from the molecular product of one or more genes in crops or livestock, through intermediate stages of husbandry, harvesting, processing, marketing, and consumption, to the final molecular changes in the human who consumes the food product. Each component of the value chain, each structure or process has its distinctive characteristics, especially its own capacity to generate value.

&lt;em&gt;Abstract&lt;/em&gt;.—Lake Conroe has long been synonymous with the controversy surrounding control of the exotic plant hydrilla &lt;em&gt;Hydrilla verticillata&lt;/em&gt;. By the time hydrilla was first identified in Lake Conroe in 1975 (2 years after impoundment), the plant covered 470 acres. By 1979, hydrilla increased to 4,500 acres and was causing problems for boaters, skiers, and swimmers. As a result of efforts by the Lake Conroe Association and its supporters and despite objections by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff, the Texas Legislature directed the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and TPWD to conduct a study to determine the ability of grass carp &lt;em&gt;Ctenopharyngodon idella &lt;/em&gt;to control hydrilla and the effects of hydrilla removal on fish populations, the fishery, and the limnology of the reservoir. Between September 1981 and September 1982, 270,000 diploid grass carp were released into Lake Conroe. By October 1983 hydrilla and all other aquatic vegetation had disappeared from the reservoir. Hydrilla growth was suppressed in Lake Conroe for the next 13 years; however, in 1996, approximately 3 acres of hydrilla were discovered. For the next 8 years (1997–2004), herbicide treatments funded primarily by the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) and conducted by SJRA and TPWD successfully limited hydrilla expansion. At the same time, native vegetation establishment by TPWD, U.S. Army Engineer Environmental Research and Development Center’s Lewisville Aquatic Ecosystem Research Facility, and several angling groups led to diversification and expansion of the native aquatic plant community in Lake Conroe and provided an alternative to a monoculture of hydrilla for fish habitat. However, by 2005, herbicide treatments alone were unable to control hydrilla expansion. As a result, TPWD and SJRA determined the need to develop a comprehensive hydrilla management plan for Lake Conroe. Therefore, a plan based on the principles of Integrated Pest Management was developed with the cooperation of angler organizations, property owner associations, local businesses, and other user groups. The plan integrated use of ecological, biological, chemical, and mechanical strategies for control of hydrilla while promoting diversity of the aquatic plant community. The stated time line of the plan was to reduce the surface coverage of hydrilla at Lake Conroe to less than 40 acres by spring of 2008, while preserving a diverse aquatic plant community.
