Based on the decision-theoretical conditions underlying the selection of events for news coverage in science journalism, this article uses a novel input-output analysis to investigate which of the more than eight million scientific study results published between August 2014 and July 2018 have been selected by global journalism to a relevant degree. We are interested in two different structures in the media coverage of scientific results. Firstly, the structure of sources that journalists use, i.e. scientific journals, and secondly, the congruence of the journalistic selection of single result

In the messages for World Communications Day the Pope formulates guidelines for journalists regarding their work that are consistent with the concept of quality journalism.

Abstract:
AbstractPlanning lays claim to being comprehensive, future-oriented, and public-interest driven, and of wanting to enhance the livability of communities. It is concerned with community systems—such as land use, housing, transportation, the environment, and the economy—and their interconnections. The food system, however, is notable by its absence from most planning practice, research, and education. We present evidence for the limited presence of the food system in planning’s list of concerns by scanning leading journals, texts, and classic writings, and by reporting on a survey of 22 U.S. city planning agencies. We analyze this low level of attention and discuss reasons and ideas for planning involvement to strengthen community food systems.

AbstractMany Sámi have been reindeer herders for centuries and their livelihood has usually been understood (solely) in terms of reindeer herding, yet agriculture has also been a typical Sámi livelihood. This chapter investigates trade, another forgotten Sámi livelihood, as portrayed in the journals of two nineteenth-century Nordic clergymen, Jacob Fellman (Finland) and Petrus Læstadius (Sweden). The chapter explores what status Sámi trade had among other livelihoods described in the two journals as well as the practices and functions that Sámi traders carried out in nineteenth-century Arctic and subarctic Europe.

Abstract:
Big Data come with the promise of a better future. In the agricultural discourse on smart technologies and data-based applications in farming, so-called “precision farming” is envisioned as a “revolution” of traditional agricultural mass production of crops and livestock. Big Data are imagined as making the agrifood industry more efficient, more profitable, and more sustainable. Drawing on David Beer’s concept of the “data imaginary” (2019), this chapter examines discourses on precision farming in corporate advertisements, lobbyist agricultural journals, and review articles in academic journals in the field of agriculture and computing. It argues that data-based agrifood production is seen as the next technological fix of the broken system of traditional industrial farming, while it in fact reinforces the devastating environmental and social damages that traditional industrial farming has caused.

The paper is based on secondary data available from various sources like articles from journals, newspaper articles, etc. The impact of the pandemic on agriculture has been quite devastating. The government is taking various steps in order to revive the agricultural sector. The authors are of the view that the packages will help the farmers, but in the long run so the government needs to take more concrete decisions to help the small farmers in the present situation by giving them more financial boost.

Abstract:
Foreign fieldwork always presents interesting and unique challenges; however, fieldwork that involves illegal activities on the part of the study group is “ethnography” like no other. The typical fieldwork tools such as tape recorders, cameras, statistical models, and formal questionnaires are often not an option. Instead, great caution and sensitivity must be maintained to protect the identity of informants, as well the researcher’s personal safety. Informants may be willing to talk about illegal activities, but in this study no one was willing to go on record or have their photographs taken with their illegal marijuana (Cannabis sativa) crop. As a result of these cautious methods, much of the information contained in this chapter is based on interviews with unnamed informants in unstructured interviews whom I came to know and trust mainly during the late 1990s while conducting fieldwork with the Mopan and Kekchí Maya in southern Belize on various cultural ecological topics. There was no intention to assist informants in illegal activities by hiding their identities, but similar to investigative journalism (which in many ways these chapters resemble), informants must have sufficient trust in the investigator in order to provide reliable information. This chapter discusses a situation that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the U.S. media, and most citizens would consider a success story in the so-called war on drugs—small-scale marijuana producers who, through the actions of interdiction authorities, were largely driven out of business. However, this chapter presents a slightly different angle on the war on drugs in that it examines the recent history of marijuana production among Maya farmers in southern Belize: why seemingly traditional and conservative peasant farmers turn to drug production in the first place, how these activities affect village life and culture, and some implications and lessons this case study provides on the larger battle over what crops, legal or illegal, smallholder farmers produce. This chapter provides some useful lessons for the larger war on drugs because the Mopan and Kekchí Maya are quite similar to other smallholder farmers who grow most of the commodities that are then consumed in raw form or manufactured into narcotics. These are economically poor farmers who perceive psychoactive plants as cash crops, much like coffee or cacao, that are consumed in distant lands by unknown peoples.
