The purpose of this study is to provide insights on volatility features of major agricultural commodity global markets. In order to achieve this, we estimate the volatility in the global markets of crude oil and four main agricultural commodities, namely rice, wheat, cotton and coffee over the period 1980:2014. We also investigate the nexus between the volatilities in these global markets. More precisely, we first model the volatility of agricultural commodity and crude oil markets based on the GARCH methodology. Abstract:
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models are commonly used for global agricultural market analysis. However, concerns are sometimes raised about the quality of their output since key parameters may not be econometrically estimated and little emphasis is generally given to model assessment. This article addresses the latter issue by developing an approach to validating CGE models based on the ability to reproduce observed price volatility in agricultural markets. We show how patterns in the deviations between model predictions and validation criteria can be used to identify the weak points o

Abstract:
Ad hoc assistance programs that specifically target agricultural producers are occasionally authorized to provide support in the event of natural disasters or unprecedented market conditions. Assistance delivered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through these programs grew substantially from 2017 to 2021 but then declined in 2022. This report provides an overview of developments in ad hoc assistance programs for agricultural producers implemented between 2017 and 2022, including the event that prompted each program, payment eligibility conditions and calculations, and other program design

Abstract:
Suriname faces unprecedented challenges in transforming its agricultural sector to a market based system, and it will need to offset the deterioration of the sector resulting from the probable loss of its preferential markets in the next decade. This study seeks to contribute to the understanding of the measures that are necessary to address the constraints on agricultural growth and development. The analysis builds on discussions that took place in May 1996 with government officials, representatives of private sector organizations and international agencies. Based on field work and subsequent

Abstract:
The benefits of the FTAA to Latin American countries will materialize through two channels: improved access to the region's markets, and enhanced growth prospects through the strengthening of basic economic institutions. Furthermore, the importance of these negotiations is heightened by the fact that they are taking place against the failure of the Uruguay Round to liberalize agricultural trade, and the lack of progress in the ongoing negotiations of the Doha round. Under these conditions for Latin American countries, who are net exporters of different bundles of agricultural products, the FTA

Abstract:
This study assesses the interaction between climate change and agricultural trade policies. We distinguish between two dimensions of agricultural trade policy: market insulation and subsidy levels. Building on the previous work of Tsigas, Frisvold and Kuhn (1997) we find that, in the presence of current levels of agricultural subsidies, increased price transmission --as called for under the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture-- reduces global welfare in the wake of climate change. This is due to the positive correlation between productivity changes and current levels of agricultural support
