Abstract:
Vermicomposting, the non-thermophilic decomposition of organic wastes by earthworms, is a popular waste management option in the Americas, Europe and the Indian sub-continent. Although the technology is inexpensive and produces an organic fertilizer as well as earthworm biomass, there are few examples of vermicomposting in sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the potential for vermicomposting in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, by conducting 1) an earthworm survey, 2) vermicomposting trials and 3) assessing farmers' perceptions of vermicompost as an organic fert

The appraisal of government-sponsored agricultural projects should examine the costs and benefits for society as a whole. The present thesis was developed in a context where the Ecuadorian government included poor small farmers from the province of Manabi as suppliers of Jatropha curcas, an endemic plant that produces oil seeds, which can be used as feedstock for biofuel. The government assumed that this initiative would improve the income of the involved farmers, but this assumption was not measured in quantitative terms. Abstract:
As the global population rises, so does the demand for food, feed, fiber, and fuel. Meeting this demand has become increasingly difficult due to the decline in farm labor and challenges associated with the economic viability of agricultural systems. Autonomous agricultural machinery has the potential to mitigate some of major challenges that crop production systems will face. Widespread adoption of autonomous machinery is dependent on two key factors, the cost and environmental impact. The development and adoption of autonomous vehicles will only occur if it is profitable for equipment manufac

Abstract:
There is mounting evidence that parasitic infections change nutrient utilisation within the tissues, and that this is responsible for the reduction in animal performance that has been observed. Feeding forages that contain condensed tannins (CT) are thought to alleviate the impact of parasite infection on amino acid (AA) and protein metabolism by improving protein supply post-ruminally. However, there has been no quantification of how nutrients are partitioned in the lamb fed fresh forages during a parasitic infection. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify the partitioning of

In operating conditions there was evaluated the animal production (dairycow breeding) by means of selected economic indicators. In Agrodružstvo Načeradec there were monitored the basic principles of dairycows nutrition and feeding and their milk production as well. The attention was paid to expense items and their modifications with respect to the production. I aimed at monitoring costs (feeding cost, labour cost, services cost etc.), yields, profit or loss in 2005 {--} 2006. During the monitoring period there was found that dairycows are profitable. The South African agricultural sector is of great economic importance; not only does it contribute to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it is also a significant provider of employment. On average, a South African producer feeds approximately 1 600 people compared to the average in Africa of only 26 people and, therefore, the South African agricultural sector is key in providing food security in South Africa. Over the last number of years, South African producers have experienced mounting pressure when it comes to producing profitably. A recent announcement of a 51% increase in agricultural minimum

Population escalation in the developing world has been associated with increased poverty, food insecurity and environmental degradation. The situation in Rwanda, with 2.82% annual population increase is no exception. The objective of the present study was to investigate an innovative integrated system of sustainable production suitable for resource-poor rural farmers, the Integrated Rabbit–Fish–Rice (IRFR) system. The study was targeted towards contributing to Rwanda government’s goals of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, enhancing food security as well as abating environmental degradati

Abstract:
Neoliberal economists argue that the market provides the most efficient mechanism to address externalities. Theoretically then, the market value of a commodity should show a correlation with any changes in social and ecological performance. Alternatively, if the social and ecological costs of production are being externalized (not addressed by the market) then it is expected that the social and ecological costs of production would not be reflected in the market price. This study examined the extent to which social and environmental costs are externalized by the salmon farming industry and,
