Abstract:
Plant biostimulants (PBs) are an attractive and environmental friendly strategy to mitigate the continuous application of chemical fertilisers which disrupt the environment by degrading soil fertility and contaminating ground water. The research described in this PhD thesis explored strategies to select, characterise and design a new generation of PBs formulations. Numerous parameters are involved in the multistep process of formulating inoculants and add up to an infinite amount of possible approaches. This requires an elaborate and high-throughput screening to narrow down all the possible criteria. Several authors suggest that this is best achieved by using a stepwise screening approach. However, the scientific literature lack of a suitable screening strategy. We addressed this facet by designing a stepwise screening procedure to select the best microbial candidates as promising new active ingredients of PBs products. Furthermore, this screening was validated by using a case study: PGPR combined with humic acids (HA) to be applied on tomato plants. This validation led us to select two PGPR, Pantoea agglomerans MVC 21 and Pseudomonas (Ps.) putida MVC 17 as potential candidates for PBs formulations. Recently, co-inoculation of two or multiple PGPR is used to achieve prominent multifactorial effects on crop productivity. To develop a PGPR consortium, we evaluated how P. agglomerans MVC 21 and Ps. putida MVC 17 interact together and the effect of this interaction on tomato seedlings. Compatibility studies revealed that both strains may be combined in a biostimulant product. Experiments testing the effect of the PGPR interaction indicated that both PGPR interact together and with tomato seedlings mainly by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by P. agglomerans MVC 21. Metabolomic studies pinpointed VOCs belonging to the family of alcohols, ketones and sulfide as the main VOCs released by P. agglomerans MVC 21. Moreover, the identification of the main VOC responsible of the effects of P. agglomerans MVC 21 VOCs deciphered new ecological roles of VOCs as chemical signals able to modulate behaviour of PGPR as well as the interaction between plants and PGPR. Another promising area of PBs formulations is the use of HA combined with PGPR which have shown to better benefit plant growth. Our study, conducted under in vitro conditions, showed that HA synergistically modulate plant growth-promoting activities of P. agglomerans MVC 21. Whole genome sequencing analysis of P. agglomerans MVC 21 will be subject of future studies. Moreover, transcriptomic analysis will be carried out to better understand the effect of HA on P. agglomerans MVC 21 genes related to plant growth-promoting activities.

Abstract:
A cryogenic thermoelectric generator is proposed to increase the efficiency of a vehicle propulsion system that uses liquid nitrogen as its fuel. The proposed design captures some of the heat required for vaporizing or initial heating of the liquid nitrogen to produce electricity. The thermoelectric generator uses pressurized liquid nitrogen as its cold reservoir and ambient air as the high-temperature reservoir to generate power. This study concentrated on the selection of thermoelectric materials whose properties would result in the highest efficiency over the operating temperature range and on estimating the initial size of the generator. The preliminary selection of materials is based upon their figure of merit at the operating temperatures. The results of this preliminary design investigation of the cryogenic thermoelectric generator indicate that sufficient additional energy can be used to increase overall efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle of a vehicle propulsion system.

Abstract:
Thesis (Doctor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Lignocellulosic biomass (agro-waste) has been recommended as the most promising feedstock for the production of bioalcohols, in the biofuel industry. Furthermore, agro-waste is well-known as the most abundant organic matter in the agricultural and forestry product processing industry. However, the challenge with utilizing agro-waste as a feedstock is its highly recalcitrant structure, which limits hydrolysis to convert the holocelluloses into fermentable sugars. Conventional pre-treatment methods such as dilute acid, alkaline, thermal, hot water and enzymatic, have been used in previous studies. The challenge with these conventional methods is the generation of residual toxicants during the pretreatment process, which inhibits a high bioalcohol yield, by reducing the microbial populations’ (fermenter) ability to be metabolically proficient during fermentation. Numerous studies have been developed to improve the engineered strains, which have shown to have an ability to reduce the inhibition and toxicity of the bioalcohols produced or by-products produced during pre-treatment, while enhancing the bioalcohol production. In the present study (chapter 5), evaluation of common conventional methods for the pretreatment of the mixed agro-waste, i.e. (˃45µm to <100µm) constituted by Citrus sinensis, Malus domestica peels, corn cobs from Zea mays and Quercus robur (oak) yard waste without a pre-rinsing step at a ratio of 1:1 at 25% (w/w) for each waste material, was undertaken, focusing on hot water pre treatment followed by dilute acid (H2SO4) pre-treatment. To further pretreat the mixed agro-waste residue, cellulases were used to further hydrolyse the pre-treated agro-waste in a single pot (batch) multi-reaction process. The TRS concentration of 0.12, 1.43 and 3.22 g/L was achieved with hot water, dilute acid and cellulases hydrolysis as sequential pretreatment steps, respectively, in a single pot multi-reaction system. Furthermore, a commercial strain was used to ascertain low (C1 to C3) and high carbon content (C4+) bioalcohol production under aerobic conditions. Multiple bioproducts were obtained within 48 to 72 h, including bioethanol and 1-Butanol, 3-methyl, which were major products for this study. However, undesirable bio-compounds such as phenolics, were detected post fermentation. Since multiple process units characterised by chemical usage and high energy intensivity have been utilized to overcome delignification and cellulolysis, a sustainable, environmental benign pretreatment process was proposed using N. mirabilis “monkey cup” fluids (extracts) to also reduce fermenter inhibitors from the delignification of mixed agrowaste; a process with minimal thermo physical chemical inputs for which a single pot multi-reaction system strategy was used. Nepenthes mirabilis extracts shown to have ligninolytic, cellulolytic and xylanolytic activities, were used as an enzyme cocktail to pretreat mixed agro-waste, subsequent to the furtherance of TRS production from the agro-waste, by further using cellulase for further hydrolysis. N. mirabilis pod extracts were determined to contained carboxylesterases (529.41±30.50 U/L), β-glucosidases (251.94±11.48 U/L) and xylanases (36.09±18.04 U/L), constituting an enzymatic cocktail with a significant potential for the reduction in total residual phenolic compounds (TRPCs). Furthermore, the results indicated that maximum concentration of TRS obtainable was 310±5.19 mg/L within 168 h, while the TRPCs were reduced from 6.25±0.18 to 4.26 ±0.09 mg/L, which was lower than that observed when conventional methods were used. Overall N. mirabilis extracts were demonstrated to have an ability to support biocatalytic processes for the conversion of agro-waste to produce fermentable TRS in a single unit facilitating multiple reactions with minimised interference with cellulase hydrolysis. Therefore, the digestive enzymes in N. mirabilis pods can be used in an integrated system for a second generation biorefinery.

Abstract:

The use of Faraday's Law to design and realize a miniature electromechanical generator that converts mechanical energy from human motion into stored electrical energy was investigated in this thesis. The design incorporates simple materials composed of ferrite cores, a coil, springs and permanent magnets to convert mechanical energy provided by a user to electrical energy for storage. The generator takes advantage of a dual air-gapped electromechanical system with permanent magnets to regulate flux through a coil around a high-permeability ferrite core. Use of a compression force provided by the user reduces the air gaps in the system, causing a rapid change in flux resulting in an electromotive force that produces a current in the circuit. Laboratory testing of a generator prototype design verifies energy production of the mechanism and investigates the relationship between the inductance range of operation for the generator and its performance characteristics. Storage of energy produced by the generator is demonstrated using two different rectification circuits and is examined during different stages of one full stroke of the generator device. Additionally, this thesis presents a simulation that models the electromechanical energy conversion.

Dudley, Darren Richard. "Design of a Vernier Permanent Magnet Wind Generator." Master's thesis, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32597.

Full text
Abstract:
The rise in popularity of renewable energy solutions, in particular wind energy systems, has resulted in a greater demand for low-speed direct-drive machines. The Vernier machine has inherent properties such as high torque density, sinusoidal induced voltages and low torque ripple which makes it suitable for low-speed direct-drive wind applications. Additionally, its mechanical structure is as simple as a conventional permanent magnet (PM) machine, whilst eliminating the need for a mechanical gearbox. The research problem addressed by this dissertation relates to the assessment of the Vernier permanent magnet (VPM) machine topology for direct-drive wind applications. It aims to outline a sizing, detailed design and analysis approach for a three-phase VPM wind generator. Furthermore, a comparative study is conducted using two different rotor types and two different stator types, namely; spoke-type and surface-mounted and fractional slot and integral slot respectively. Vernier theory is used to size the designs after which 2D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations are used to analyse and validate the designs. The main outcome of the comparative study is an assessment of the suitability of four topologies for the direct-drive wind application. The design is assessed on parameters which are critical for wind turbine functionality; namely efficiency, torque ripple, torque density and material consumption. The most suitable of the topologies is selected for prototyping. The rotor is made more robust by adding structural features which mechanically secure laminations and PMs to the shaft. The FEA analysis of the prototype showed favourable performance characteristics, albeit with a small cost in power density. The prototype was -thus manufactured with further mechanical reinforcements made to the bearing system. Experimental results reveal the presence of a defect in the windings. Parameters which are dependent on the winding design are much lower than the analytical and FEA values. These parameters include resistance, inductance, and back-EMF. Further work should look into determining the root cause of the prototype defects.

Abstract:
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is widely used in area of geologic exploration, hidden stationary subject detection and quality inspection on various infrastructures. The pulse generator, which offers very accurate timing information, is the most cardinal component in GPR systems. It is easy to design a pulse generator which produces pulse with pre-settled peak value and pulse width in nanosecond scale. However, since the system is working in complicated environments, various pulses in different pulse widths and amplitudes are needed. In this background, pulse generators in tunability and stability are precious in value and universal in use. Indeed, a few adaptive high voltage pulse signal generators in UWB circuit level have been developed. A pulse generator with tunable pulse width and controllable voltage amplitude is proposed under these demands. The proposed circuit implementation combines System-On-Chip (SOC) design with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design because we intend to realize modulation separately. We also design an easy input console named Binary Input Array in the research to realize control simplicity. Furthermore, we employ mathematical model to optimize parameters in each component in order to have an improved performance. Simulation data are obtained from Cadence Virtuoso and OrCAD Capture.

Being competitive in the production of food, using agricultural machinery with up-todate technologies and design, adjusted to the standards of international sustainability and serving customers, does not depend on the size of the company. It depends upon the awareness of the importance of defining the performance space that wants to be conquered in the market. Therefore, every agricultural machinery company needs to define the way it wants to be seen and remembered by its clients, which means the whole company being involved in the mechanization of agribusiness needs, in order to have a position in the market in which it is inserted. The present work aims to identify, based on the German company KRONE and Brazilian companies producing agricultural machines, the variables or positioning indicators that influence the decision making of farmers in the acquisition of high value agricultural machinery, guaranteeing design, sustainability and productivity. These variables can be used by companies to carry out the process of transferring technological innovations, aiming to increase or maintain their market share, by narrowing relations between agricultural producers and companies. The established positioning variables refer to farmers of greater perception when choosing a machine for a given crop. Thus, the relevant technical and / or behavioral factors that influence decision making at the time of purchase by food producers are identified. Through interviews with KRONE's business team and opinion formers in agribusiness, the motivations, perceptions, experiences, behaviors and intentions that directly interfere on the decision-making process are analyzed, and position variables are considered in this study. Knowing more about what and how their customers think, companies can improve their market position. For this reason, a new program for FGV was developed: Sustainability Machinery – Design. To get to know the Brazilian Market, 300 Brazilian Companies producing agricultural machines were interviewed. Companies are supposed to serve as partners in the new discipline, because they benefit from that. Furthermore, the concern with the proper design and sustainability of our world, takes a prominent place in the positioning variables.

Abstract:
The task in this project is to design a generator for a vertical axis wind turbine withpower rated to 20kW at a wind speed of 10m/s. The project is conducted at theDivision of Electricity at Uppsala University with collaboration from ElectricGeneration AB. The design has just a few moving parts, which decreases maintenancecosts and increases its toughness. The turbine absorbs wind from every direction butits rotation speed ratio is lower than horizontal axis wind turbines. It means that thegenerator must be bigger and therefore more expensive. Price is an importantcriterion for the generator. Neodymium magnets are expensive so the amount of thismaterial must be limited.Several designs have been simulated but one final design has proven the mostpromising. It fulfills all specifications such as efficiency above 95%, 20kW outputpower and it also has a relatively low amount of hard magnetic material.A design with a single row of cables per slot was decided upon to eliminate heatpockets between cable rows, which can occur in designs with two cable rows perslot. It would be interesting to study designs with two or more cable rows per slot, asit could lead to a smaller and more efficient machine.

The Diagnostic Instrumentation and Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) at Mississippi State University was awarded a project to study the feasibility of measuring particulate matter downstream of a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter by testing commercially available equipment used to monitor the downstream side of a HEPA filter. In order to perform the work required for this project, a test stand to accommodate a 12? x 12? x 11.5? HEPA filter with a rated flow of 250 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) was constructed. The test stand required an aerosol generator capable of producing a mass loading rate of 30 mg/m3 of dry aerosol at the face of the HEPA filter. It was determined that there was not a commercially available aerosol generator that quite fit the needs of the project. Therefore, it was necessary to develop an aerosol generator with the capabilities required for the project.

As Internet and E-commerce become popular today, it’s more and more important to secure transmitted information. We can secure information by using encryption and decryption. In cryptographic system we need random numbers to generate keys and some initial values of system. However, random numbers generated by a random generator are periodic and predictable if we use digital circuits and software to make a random generator. It lacks security. By using analog circuits to make a random generator we can get true random numbers which are aperiodic, unpredictable and statistically random. In some true random generator researches, the architecture is too complex or it’s too hard to make. Therefore, this thesis uses simple switched-capacitor circuit to implement chaotic discrete-time system. This true random generator design achieves simple architecture, low cost, low power and true random number generation. According to the trend of System On a Chip(SOC), we also design micro-controller and construct a cryptographic system.

A wind turbine may use different generators including permanent magnet synchronous generator, reluctance generator, flux switching permanent magnet machine, high–temperature superconducting generator and others. Various generators have different characteristics for specific applications. The advantages and weak points for wind generators are summarized in this work. Additionally, this work also investigates the main considerations when designing the wind generator. They include the efficiency, the cogging torque, the torque ripple, the size, the weight and the magnet materials used in machines. Additionally, This thesis has the initial prototype design on small permanent magnet synchronous generator. The slot number and pole number is 32 pole 33 slot and 32 pole 36 slot, respectively. The design steps and the design considerations of the wind generator are also discuessed. Finally, this work uses one-factor-at-atime method and Taguchi’s Orthogonal Arrays Method to improve the performance of the wind generator to reduce the cogging torque of the machine. The results show that we can obtain better performance wind generator by using Taguchi’s Orthogonal Arrays Method.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the development and validation of an instrument that allows the formation of drops. This document starts by showing the design developed for this purpose. After the development of the design, the pieces were built using 3D printing. When the process was complete, the device was assembled and validated. For the validation of this instrument, it was necessary to create a test station which is shown in chapter 3. After the entire assembly process, the validation tests were carried out. In the validation phase, water was applied to be ejected by the apparatus. Six different flow rates were implemented in order to determine the effect of the flow rate on the formation and behavior of the drops. The results of these tests were obtained through visualization methods. After all the images were collected in the testing phase, they were analyzed for the extraction of diameters. After the tests of undisturbed droplet formation were completed, the disturbed generation of droplets was proceeded to test. In this testing phase, three flows were chosen from the previous phase and imposed. The flow rates chosen for the disturbed phase of the generation of droplets were: 2.5, 4 and 5 ml/min. The proceedings for these tests was the flow and signal implementation. After the flow was implemented, the electromagnetic wave was built to be implemented in the piezoelectric cell. The electromagnetic signal consists of a square wave of constant amplitude (20 Vpp), where the frequency is periodically increased. The study with several frequencies aims to investigate the influence of frequency on the forma- tion of drops for the case of this instrument. This study allows testing whether the apparatus is capable of creating consecutive drops with high repeatability in terms of diameter and spacing between drops. Like the undisturbed cases, the disturbed droplet formation was also tested through visualization and image analysis.

The Internet has provided an ideal environment for engineering education. This thesis describes the development of a new problem generator used in the Engineering Design Tutor (EDT) system to provide multi-step problem generation capability. The EDT system allows the user to specify a set of design concepts from a specific domain, based on which a problem tree is generated. All the possible solution paths in the tree are searched and the most complete and correct path is automatically selected as the shortest path. Using the values obtained from a constraint satisfaction solution for the variables in the shortest path, and the templates provided for the problem description, the system allows the automatic generation of a set of problems all using the same shortest solution path.

This thesis aims at design high uniform laser line generator lens. Light source is green laser. The design uses a lens with Biconic Zenike convex in front surface and a plane surface in other side. After the light source passes the lens, the divergent laser beam becomes a 120 degrees line and the illumination is uniform. The design philosophy is energy conservation in laser beam. We get the input ray relations data and output ray relations data at target plane. The relations in ray data are set in Merit function for optimization.

The main focus this thesis proposes microstrip waveguide structure wide-band(WB) (1.4GHz to 2.2GHz and 2.6 to 4.0GHz) band-pass filter(BPF). Here ,we use ADS software to design filters .After finishing design and simulation, we use photo-lithography to implement two kinds of WB microstrip band-pass filters 1.4GHz to 2.2GHz and 2.6 to 4.0GHz. According to frequency response, filters can be divided into: (1) low-pass filter, (2) high-pass filter, (3) band-pass filter and band-stop filter. This paper only chooses band-pass filters for research. According to different circuit requirements, the BPF designer has different consideration. Distributed circuit has superior performance, but its circuit area is too large in the low frequency band . From the point of view of IC design, area is money. Thus, miniaturization of the circuit is the inevitable trend .The bands we have designed are1.4 to 2.2GHz and 2.6 to 4.0GHz, which are mainly applied to signal generator. Meanwhile, we use hairpin line structure in the low band BPF of 1.4 to 2.2GHz to reduce its size. Via doubler module and our filters, the rejection of output has obvious improvement in the application of signal generators. The measured results are as follows: In the output of 1.4GHz~2.4GHz, the rejection of fundamental is -37dBc±3dB and that of triple frequency is -32.5dBc±7dB;In the output of 2.6GHz~3.6GHz, the rejection of triple frequency is -31.3dBc±8dB and that of penta-frequency is -19.4dBc±3dB。

A 3 kW ocean current generator will be designed and tested in large cavitation tunnel at NTOU(National Taiwan Ocean University). The propeller lifting line theory will be applied to design the turbine blade at 3.2 m/s current speed. The power generated by different diameters of turbine blade and its corresponding optimal revolutions will be calculated. The efficiency of three blades turbine is higher than that of two blades turbine. A three blades turbine with 0.8 m diameter can reach 3 kW. Due to the 6.2 rps low shaft rotational speed at design inflow speed, a planet gear is used to increase the speed 7 times. Thus, the torque and the size of the generator is reduced correspondingly. The generator is submersible type, and cooling with the sea water. Because the planet gear is not watertight, the seals are important in order to keep watertight. Besides, a flexible coupling between gear and generator is installed to reduce the vibration. A power electronic system which can convert the generated power to 110 V and 60 Hz, will also be installed. Besides, a mechanism which can make the generator always to direct to the inflow, is designed, in order to keep the best efficiency when the current direction is changed.

On the basis of development, testing, maintenance for thermal image system, we attempted to establish a dynamic IR target generator system in the paper. The system including of radiance source, scene generator, collimator. The traditional target generator can’t create dynamic real-time scene image for the demand of testing new generation thermal image system, so it must be innovated in the laboratory testing setup. Currently, the leading dynamic IR scene projection are suspended membrane resistor、Diode Laser and DMD (Digital Micromirror Device)projector. In this paper, we focused on collimator design utilizing DMD projector. First, determining the of specification components by geometric optics theory. We choose refractive four peztval type in the 3µm ~ 5µm waveband and used optical software ZEMAX to optimize it and evaluated image quality , MTF showed 0.3 at 55 lp/mm at 20℃, and then we used original lens data and optimize lens parameter with passively optical athermalization over the temperature from 20℃-100℃.As a result, we designed collimator with 200mm EFL、80mm entrance pupil diameter、-200mm entrance pupil position and performed near diffraction to stabilize image quality.

As the complexity of System-on-a-Chip (SoC) designs increases, embedded memory components gradually occupy a significant portion of the total area cost, and the reusable memory Intellectual Property (IP) design becomes a critical issue. In this thesis, an automatic cache generator is developed which can be easily integrated into the current cell-based design flow. The generated cache contains both hard IP and soft IP. The storage array circuits are implemented as hard IP to reduce the area cost. The cache control unit is realized as soft IP. The hard IP of the core memory circuits mainly store data and tag information. The implementations of tag arrays can be divided into two categories: RAM-tag design and CAM (Content Addressable Memory)-tag design. We adopt the CAM-tag style in our cache design because CAM cells have the functions of storage as well as data-matching, and thus can be easily used to realize the tag function in cache. The soft IP of cache controller implements the different writing strategies and block replacement methods. The input parameters of the cache generator include cache size, block size, information on set-associativity, writing strategy, replacement methods, etc. The output of the cache generator contains the RTL code for the soft IP and other necessary Models for the hard IP so that the generated cache can be mixed with other pure cell-based design modules during synthesis and placement-and-routing.

In communication system, turbo decoder is widely used nowaday. However, the specifications of turbo decoders are difference in various communication applications. It will cost lot of time and labor to design turbo decoder with traditional methods, which does not meet Time to Market requirement. In this thesis, we propose a De-interleaver free table turbo decoder SIP generator. This IP generator not only provides IC designer to generate a turbo decoder with configurable parameter but also the automatic performance simulation which produces the SNR and BER relation charts for IC designers to evaluate the error correction efficiency. Moreover, we analyzed the characteristics of interleaver and de-interleaver then re-arranged the extrinsic memory access order; thus only one interleaver table is needed to perform the function of interleaver and de-interleaver. This new architecture effectively reduces the extrinsic memory to half and shrinks the chip area and lowers the power consumption. Finally as to verify our SIP generator, we have synthesized the turbo decoder chips which consist 1, 2, and 4 parallel MAP decoders by TSMC 0.18 1p6m process, and also performed efficiency analysis. The experimental results show that the memory area is reduced by 9.5%~15.6% and power consumption by 5.7%~11.11% without degrading the decoding speed.

Now, energy consumption issue is getting more and more attention. Recycle energy is a great solution to solve it. So, how to use recyclable energy is a key to reduce polluting our living environment. It is the responsibility of everyone. In order to use water resources effectively, the purpose of this study is to develop a micro hydro-generator. This hydro-generator will be used in sensor faucet. When the faucet is activated, the water will drive the hydro-generator to generate electricity to supply the power required for the electronic components of the sensor faucet. This can reduce the battery power consumption and reduce the battery replacement frequency. So, we can reduce battery polluting to the living environment. According to the principle of the generator, I use a powerful magnet to design a small permanent magnet hydraulic generator. It is just about the size to fit into the body of sensor faucet. When washing hands, the water drives the turbine blades within the hydroelectric generator. The turbine blades drive the stainless steel rotor which will exchange the magnet's magnetic force direction within the rotor. The changing magnetic field causes the coil to activate electricity. Test results show that the water flow impact on the turbine blades can start to drive the rotor at 1 kg / cm2 water pressure and generate power. In Taiwan, the water pressure of the water pipe is about 2.5 kg / cm2 and the water pressure in the United States is about 4.5 kg / cm2. Therefore, the external magnet fitted type hydro-generator has been able to meet the demands.

While the world is facing energy shortage concerns, nuclear energy is the best of all the energy efficiency of energy generation now. But after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, there are some considerations for the problems and risks posed by nuclear power at the countries, therefore the Renewable energy will be noticed again by the world. Based on above reasons, we will focus on designs and experiments of wind turbine. In this dissertation, we studied in how to design a new wind turbine with an improved TRIZ method which has engineering properties of the corresponding single and multiple innovative methods to analyze the general rules of the wind turbine blades which have those disadvantages and found a new way of generating electricity. Next, we used Taguchi Methods to set the control factor and found the optimal combination of control factors of the wind turbine through the experiment. Because our university doesn’t have wind tunnel, we need to find a suitable place to do this experiment. There had some difficulties because of weather’s affect in Taiwan. We obtained low power by the experimental results through the Taguchi Methods, so we renewed the reciprocating power generating module. Then we compared the optimal combination with random combination, and result was that optimal combination was the best. Finally, experimental results showed that compared with the general experimental wind turbine blades wind turbine could function outside as well as nature conservation in addition to green.

Recently, renewable energy is under intense investigation. More and more people are studying how to transform the endless energy acquired from ambient vibration into useful energy. In this study, we design a novel mechanism to scavenge mechanical energy from ambient vibration into electrical energy by utilizing piezoelectric materials. Unlike most generators using bending piezoelectric elements to generate electricity, this study deals with torsional vibration of piezoelectric elements to convert from mechanical energy to electrical energy. We use an energy method and Hamilton’s principle in the calculus of variations to calculate the torsional resonance frequency of a piezoelectric beam with both ends clamped by fixtures. Then, we use mechanics of composite to calculate the stress-strain relationship of three-layer piezoelectric beams. In experiments, an AC servo motor is used to shake an aluminum rocker arm, and the other end of the arm is attached to a miniature generator. The motor makes the arm swing back and forth to simulate arm swing when people walk. When the rocker arm swings, the piezoelectric beam deforms by the pendulum in the small generators swings back and forth. We use powerful magnets as the loads of the pendulum. The weight of the pendulum can be changed by varying the number of the magnets, so that the piezoelectric beam produces different level deformation and converts mechanical energy to electrical energy for portable power use.

This study work demonstrates the implementation of visual IP generator for FIR filter(such as low-pass filter, high pass filter, band-pass filters, etc) based on Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. The sum of coefficient product terms is the major part in the FIR filter. In the Visual IP Generator, we proposed a novel algorithm that can translate the sum of coefficient product term on behalf of FIR filter into the sum of bit shifted term, and then uses Booth Algorithm as well as sharing group operation to minimize the number of bit shifted term for reducing adder used. The FIR filter IP generated from this work is also compiled and simulated in Altera Quartus II and compared with the Altera IP code synthesized FIR filter. The comparison results verified our implemented FIR filter is better than the FIR filter constructed by Altera build-in IP Code. Our design can be accomplished by three stages: set up FIR filter parameters, establish the simplified adder tree by applied Booth algorithm as well as sharing group operation, and then follows that tree to synthesis VHDL Code. Through these steps, user can save a lot of time and effort in designing and simulation a FIR filter using VHDL code.Through these steps, user can save a lot of time and effort in designing and simulation a FIR filter using VHDL code.

This work presents a design of high linear test stimulus generator, whose principal is to compensate the drift due to the effect of parasitic capacitor by applying a feedback architecture, so as to alleviate the effect on signal caused by process variation and then promote the linearity of the signal. The proposed research enables the test on analog signal circuits, especially for non-linearity test of data converter, which usually requires a triangular wave test stimulus with high resolution but low speed. Experimental result shows that a test stimulus with sample rate of 40 MHz, generating frequency of 4.4 KHz, and resolution of 12 bits, reaches to the linearity of 0.36 LSB INL and 0.25 LSB DNL, which enables the non-linearity test on data converters with resolution of 10 bits and sample rate of 10 MHz. No matter through experiment or theoretical analysis, each result is agreeable with the proposed design.

Recently, there has been an explosion of interest in the field of transforming the endless energy from ambient vibration into useful power. We scavenge mechanical energy and transfer into electrical energy by utilizing piezoelectric materials. In order to find the optimum mechanism design, we analyze theoretically several kinds of mechanisms concerning the number of piezoelectric benders and the method of erecting benders. We compare generators performance at different situations and then let electric energy be charged to a Ni-MH battery or a capacitor through a full wave rectifier. We also obtain resonance of piezoelectric benders by system identification which can be an important reference when designing the generator. This study proposes a novel mechanism comprising a mass-spring system and magnet repulsive force. According to finite element software and experimental result, below 5 Hz the generator absorbs vibration energy more easily. We have investigated the influence of the mass magnitude and obtained the optimum result of 2.7V and 0.379μw when the swinging amplitude of the motor is deg at swinging frequency of 3.96 Hz.

This thesis aims to design-ThermoElectric Generator System. The ThermoElectric Generator System generates power by temperature difference. The hot side uses a heater to simulate exhaust heat. The cooling side is particularly designed utilizing the passive heat sink tech, Loop Heat Pipe. As a result, the system achieves the goal of electricity generation. The study discusses the Maximum Power Point Trick controller in order to maintain the maximum power exportation. Then, the final step is about to research the design of ThermoElectric Generator System with near Maximum Power Point Operation (nMPPO), According to testing result of the study, As long as the temperature of hot side of ThermoElectric Generator System(TEGS) stays within 150℃~210℃, the transformative efficiency of nMPPO will higher than the one of MPPT. Finally, the study analyses the proper usage of the MPPT and the nMPPO. First, the usage of MPPT is suitable for using when the temperature range of hot side is higher than 150℃~210℃. In addition, the MPPT is not affected by systematic ageing effect. It can be used for a long time. Second, the usage of nMPPO is suitably used when the hot side is within 150℃~210℃. Moreover, the time which it is able to be used is much shorter.

Linear generators are used in some special situations, such as wave power system or portable generator. In order to design the linear generator with permanent magnet, this research established an experimental platform, and studied the parameters on the induced voltage. The designed parameters of linear generator are: coil turns, speed and stoke of the magnets traveling, arrangement of the magnet. The experiment platform is easy to change these designed parameters to get the optimization of voltage. The results are appeared via an oscilloscope as a waveform chart analysis. The experimental results show that the induced voltage is proportional to stoke of magnet, coil turns, and the speed of magnet. Moreover, the arrangement of the magnets and the coils paly very important roles on the magnitude of the voltage. The wave forms from the generators are compared with numerical simulations, and the results are interesting and correct. In brief, the designed platform and the experiments are helpful for designing the linear generator.

This thesis presents the design and development of an electromagnetic shock wave generation based on repetitive triggering method of finite amplitude shock pulse in liquids. This device consists of a high-voltage, 2 to 3-µF, 6-kV capacitor which is discharged to a flat coil. An insulated metal disk is placed in close proximity to the coil and is mounted in a water-filled tube. Lorentz force induced by eddy currents in the disk repluses the disk away from the coil. The disk repulsive acceleration produces a pressure shock wave which is focused to the target using acoustic lens. Theoretical analyses of the electrical and control circuits have been developed with details of components and materials. In this study, a high voltage power circuit is developed as shock wave generator for experiment. By increasing the capacitance to lift energy level, a higher focusing pressure can be achieved. A generalized relationship between the acoustic pressure and capacitance voltage also has been evaluated. The modeled shock wave generator can produced 0.06 to 0.104 mJ/mm2 energy which has a potential application for ESWT, e.g. lipotripsy, messaging and other aesthetic application. However, higher intensity can be achieved by adding extra capacitor to the circuit. Finally, the necessary control signals, acoustic field, peak measured acoustic pressure and shock wave intensity have been measured in experiments.

The demand for the high capacity generators applied to renewable energy systems, such as wind turbines, has been significantly increased. The power density of conventional generators is essentially limited by the magnetic intensity provided by permanent magnets and the saturation of the ferromagnetic materials. Thus, gearboxes become necessary to increase the generator speed and reduce the volume. Consequently, this would be the drawbacks for high power applications (e.g., offshore wind turbines) in terms of manufacturing, maintenance and cost. High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) tapes has zero resistance below certain temperature. The current density of HTS tapes can be much higher than copper wires. Therefore, the magnetic field strength can be significantly enhanced if the HTS tapes are used to replace permanent magnets in the generator. This would then reduce the volume and weight of the generator. However, the cost for HTS tapes is very high and the cost reduction of HTS generator (HTSG) can be achieved by decreasing the amount of HTS tapes used while maintain the generator performance. Finite element simulations and Particle Swarm Optimization are used in this thesis to determine the optimum design of a 5 MW offshore wind turbine system. The research problem in HTSG includes electromagnetics, structure and heat transfer and this is essentially multiphysical. Thus, it is difficult to accomplish the full design and manufacture of HTSG in the work of this thesis. Instead, this thesis presents a current input system for HTS tapes using persistent current switch (PCS) as the reference for future design.
