This paper reviews the contribution of agriculture and rural development to poverty reduction by examining the transformation of five territories in four countries of Asia (Malaysia and People's Republic of China) and Latin America (Brazil and Peru) that have experienced substantial reductions in poverty. The recent developments at the multilateral and regional fronts call for a re-evaluation of trade and integration options for MERCOSUR. Applying a brand new CGE model, we evaluated six scenarios. The simulation results indicate that trade agreements will generate relatively small but positive gains.
