One major problem plaguing reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.), a high yielding perennial grass, is its poor seed retention. Folded leaf progeny plants from a cross involving a seed-retaining clone were observed in a space-planted nursery. Adventitious root growth from the crown of red clover constitutes a major portion of the root system in older stands. Two 2 yr old production fields and 3 yr old research plots were sampled in springs of 1988 and 1989 to determine the relationship between spring vigor and two root types of red clover. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados (DBC), com cinco tratamentos, cinco repetiÃÃes e duas plantas por parcela. Plant species were assessed for recolonization of a brownfield in Muncie, IN. In a greenhouse study, soil was seeded to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Selected pots were amended with leaf compost and mycorrhizal fungi. Soil and plant tissue were analyzed after 30 and 90 days. Ryegrass and compost were studied at the brownfield site.
