Abstract:
Objective Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) is characterised by paroxysmal hemiplegic episodes and seizures. Remission of hemiplegia upon sleep is a clinical diagnostic feature of AHC. We investigated whether: 1) Hemiplegic events are associated with spectral EEG changes 2) Sleep in AHC is associated with clinical or EEG spectral features that may explain its restorative effect. Methods We retrospectively performed EEG spectral analysis in five adults with AHC and twelve age-/gender-matched epilepsy controls. Five-minute epochs of hemiplegic episodes and ten-minute epochs of four sleep stages were selected from video-EEGs. Arousals were counted per hour of sleep. Results We found 1) hemispheric differences in pre-ictal and ictal spectral power (p = 0.034), during AHC hemiplegic episodes 2) 22% reduced beta power (p = 0.017) and 26% increased delta power (p = 0.025) during wakefulness in AHC versus controls. There were 98% more arousals in the AHC group versus controls (p = 0.0003). Conclusions There are hemispheric differences in spectral power preceding hemiplegic episodes in adults with AHC, and sleep is disrupted. Significance Spectral EEG changes may be a potential predictive tool for AHC hemiplegic episodes. Significantly disrupted sleep is a feature of AHC.

Abstract:
Background Hemiplegic migraine (HM) and alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) are rare episodic neurological brain disorders with partial clinical and genetic overlap. Recently, ATP1A3 mutations were shown to account for the majority of AHC patients. In addition, a mutation in the SLC2A1 gene was reported in a patient with atypical AHC. We therefore investigated whether mutations in these genes may also be involved in HM. Furthermore, we studied the role of SLC2A1 mutations in a small set of AHC patients without ATP1A3 mutations. Methods We screened 42 HM patients (21 familial and 21 sporadic patients) for ATP1A3 and SLC2A1 mutations. In addition, four typical AHC patients and one atypical patient with overlapping symptoms of both disorders were screened for SLC2A1 mutations. Results A pathogenic de novo SLC2A1 mutation (p.Gly18Arg) was found in the atypical patient with overlapping symptoms of AHC and hemiplegic migraine. No mutations were found in the HM and the other AHC patients. Conclusion Screening for a mutation in the SLC2A1 gene should be considered in patients with a complex phenotype with overlapping symptoms of hemiplegic migraine and AHC.

Abstract:
Familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) and alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) are severe neurological disorders that share clinical features. Therefore, FHM genes are candidates for AHC. We performed mutation analysis in the CACNA1A gene in a monozygotic twin pair with clinical features overlapping with both AHC and FHM and identified a novel de novo CACNA1A mutation. We provide the first evidence that a CACNA1A mutation can cause atypical AHC, indicating an overlap of molecular mechanisms causing AHC and FHM. These results also suggest that CACNA1A mutation scanning is indicated in patients with a severe neurological phenotype that includes paroxysmal (alternating) hemiplegia.

Abstract:
In Northern European countries 13–28% of female patients seeking gynecological health care have reported abuse by health care staff (AHC). We conducted workshops with health care staff using the improvised role-play method Forum Play (FP), based on techniques developed by Boal. The study explores to what extent the intervention increased the staff’s awareness of AHC and their ability to take action against it. A total of 16 half-day FP workshops were conducted with staff from a Swedish women’s clinic over one year. Self-reported questionnaires were distributed to all staff before, during, and after the intervention. Primary outcome measures were the number of reported occasions of AHC and FP participants’ ability to act in AHC-situations. We found an increase in the participants’ self-reported ability to act in AHC-related situations. However, no change could be observed in the number of reported occasions of AHC between baseline and one year after the intervention. Health care staff’s participation in workshops using improvised role-play can increase staff’s perceived ability to take action in AHC situations. The voluntary nature of the intervention may have attracted those who were already aware of the topic, and likely explains the unchanged awareness of AHC.

Abstract:
AbstractTheAsteridium–Heliosphaeridium–Comasphaeridium(AHC) acritarch assemblage is composed of common organic-walled microfossils in the basal Cambrian chert–phosphorite units in South China, indicating that the AHC assemblage can be a useful biostratigraphic tool for the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary successions in the Yangtze Platform. To test the validity of the AHC acritarch assemblage as a biostratigraphic tool, the stratigraphic range of the AHC acritarch assemblage was confirmed, and its spatial and temporal relationships to other bio- and chemostratigraphic tools were analysed in the Yanjiahe Formation, Yangtze Gorges area, South China. The result shows that the AHC assemblage temporally correlates to theAnabarites trisulcatus–Protohertzina anabaricaAssemblage Zone, and spatially correlates to the large negative carbon isotope anomaly of the lowermost Cambrian (BACE) in the Yanjiahe Formation. This implies that the radiation of phytoplankton occurred slightly before the radiation of the small shelly fossils, and the AHC acritarch assemblage can be another important chronological reference to the lowermost Cambrian successions in South China, and potentially to global correlations.

Abstract:
AbstractAlternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder and characterized by infantile onset hemiplegia involving either side of the body and other paroxysmal spells, including epilepsy. The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor noncompetitive antagonist ketamine has been proved to be effective terminating status epilepticus (SE) in animal models and human case studies. Less than 50 cases, those use ketamine, have been reported in the management of pediatric SE, but its effectiveness is unknown in patients with AHC. The author reported two patients with molecularly confirmed AHC who presented with super refractory status epilepticus. These two patients failed multiple antiepileptic drugs, including midazolam infusion and propofol but responded promptly to ketamine infusion. This is the first description of the effectiveness of ketamine as an effective third-line agent for super refractory SE associated with AHC. Increased glutamate-mediated neurotoxicity can be present in AHC, not only due to overexpression of glutamate receptors during status epilepticus but also due to unique characteristics of AHC-preferential inactivity of GABAergic interneuron and impaired action of glutamate transporters (EAAT-1). Moreover, as neuroregression is possible after SE in AHC, earlier termination of SE by using ketamine can be an effective option in this population. Further prospective, controlled studies are needed to confirm the finding of this study.

Abstract:
Hand hygiene (HH) is one of the most important infection prevention and control strategies at the hospital level. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential COVID-19 pandemic impact on HH practices and rate of healthcare-associated infections. Data on alcohol-based handrub consumption (AHC) and antimicrobial resistance across 27 Italian hospitals over the period 2017–2021 were considered. Data on Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteria (CRE) were extracted from the antimicrobial resistance regional surveillance system. A significant increase was highlighted, with a peak in 2020 and a partial fall in 2021 for AHC (p < 0.001). The decrease in MRSA rates in 2021 compared to 2017–2019 was significant (p = 0.013). A significant Spearman’s correlation between AHC and CRE rates was found (Spearman’s ρ −0.646, p = 0.032). This study supports the importance of AHC monitoring and showed that improving AHC was an attainable goal in the COVID-19 era. However, other strategies are needed to maintain the high levels of AHC attained during the pandemic, in order to avoid a progressive drop that has already begun in 2021. Furthermore, our results support the inverse relationship between AHC and infection rates and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.

Abstract:
Introduction. X-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC) is a rare cause of adrenocortical insufficiency. Early postnatal diagnosis may prevent severe hypoglycemia, Addisonian crises and death. Low maternal estriol (E3) levels in the second trimester of pregnancy could indicate the possibility that the fetus suffers from a disorder that causes adrenal insufficiency. Suspicion is based on the fact that E3 originates from dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) synthesized in the fetal adrenals. In case of adrenal insufficiency, the impaired production of fetal DHEA leads to a subsequent reduction of E3 concentrations in maternal serum. There are only a few reports of AHC suspected prenatally due to low maternal E3 levels. Case Outline. We describe two brothers with adrenal insufficiency due to AHC. The older brother was admitted to the hospital at the age of 33 days due to failure to thrive, vomiting, and dehydration. Genetic analysis revealed a hemizygous mutation in DAX-1 gene, thus confirming the diagnosis of ACH. The same mutation was detected in his mother. In the second pregnancy, E3 concentrations were determined from maternal serum. Estriol levels during the second trimester were extremely low suggesting the diagnosis of AHC. The diagnosis was confirmed during the neonatal period by genetic testing, and replacement therapy was started at the age of 10 days. This boy never experienced an adverse episode such as hypoglycemia or adrenal crises. Conclusion. Since determination of E3 is a simple, sensitive, noninvasive and cheap method, its use as an obligatory prenatal screening test should be accepted as a standard practice in Serbia.

Abstract:
Background: Population aging is coupled with an increased morbidity rate of chronic diseases, and the lesions are mostly related to the liver, joints, and adipose tissues. Chronic diseases not only influence personal health but also increase national health and medical expenses. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most familiar chronic liver disease (CLD) in the world. It will cause liver fibrosis or death without treatment, but there is no certified drug for treatment. According to many studies, artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) extract, Kenponashi (Hoveniadulcis thunberg) extract, sanghuangporus sanghuang (Phellinuslinteus) extract, fructus schisandrae (Schisandra chinensis) extract, sesame (Sesamum indicum) extract, vitamin B complex and vitamin E have potential in resisting inflammation and liver fibrosis, but this novel combination for improving hepatic injury has not been studied or discussed in practice. Objective: This experiment discussed the effect of an artichoke compound (AHC) formula containing artichoke extract, Kenponashi extract, sanghuangporus sanghuang extract, fructus schisandrae extract, sesame extract , vitamin B complex and vitamin E on improving the chronic hepatitis of rats induced by carbon tetrachloride(CCl4). Design: A total of 50 six-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into five groups for use in the experiment, including the control group and four experimental groups (CCl4). The CCl4 groups were given carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) or AHC (318, 636 and 1,590 mg/kg, represented by AHC-L, AHC-M, and AHC-H, respectively). All rats were fed AHC for one week at first. Starting from the second week, the control group was fed olive oil (0.2 ml/100 g) per os, while the experimental group was fed with CCl4 20% twice per week for eight-weeks. During the experimental period, CMC or AHC was given to the rats once per day. All rats were sacrificed in the ninth-week to analyze their body weight, food intake, body fat content, serum biochemical value and liver lipids. Results: The results showed that the final spleen weight of the CCl4 +AHC-H group was significantly lower than that of the CCl4 +CMC group; the AST concentration in the plasma of the CCl4+AHC-L, M and H groups was significantly lower than that of the CCl4+CMC group; the ALT concentration in the plasma of the CCl4+AHC-H group was significantly lower than that of the CCl4+CMC group; the triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations in the plasma of the CCl4+AHC-L, M and H groups were significantly lower than that of the CCl4+CMC group; the GSH concentration in the livers of the CCl4+AHC-L and H groups was significantly higher than that of the CCl4+CMC group; the hepatic fibrosis of the CCl4+AHC-L, M and H groups were significantly lower than that of the CCl4+CMC group (p<0.05). Conclusion: AHC could reduce the ALT and AST values of rat plasma induced by CCl4, increase the antioxidant GSH content in the liver, and reduce the degree of hepatic fibrosis. It has the potential to be a natural and mild plant extract dietary supplement. Its long-term administration effect on the human body should be observed in the future.

Abstract:
abstract X-linked congenital adrenal hypoplasia (AHC) is a rare developmental disorder of the human adrenal cortex and is caused by deletion or mutation of the DAX-1 gene, a recently discovered member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily. Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is frequently associated with AHC. AHC occurs as part of a contiguous gene syndrome together with glycerol kinase deficiency (GKD) and Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy. The present series, collected over the past 2 decades, includes 18 AHC boys from 16 families: 4 with AHC, GKD, and Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy; 2 with AHC and GKD; and 12 with AHC (5 young adults with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism). Most of the boys presented with salt wasting and hyperpigmentation during the neonatal period. Plasma steroid determinations performed in the first weeks of life often showed confusing results, probably caused by steroids produced in the neonates’ persisting fetocortex. Aldosterone deficiency usually preceded cortisol deficiency, which explains why the patients more often presented with salt-wasting rather than with hypoglycemic symptoms. An ACTH test was often necessary to detect cortisol deficiency in the very young infants. In some patients, serial testing was necessary to establish the correct diagnosis. In 4 boys studied during the first 3 months after birth, we found pubertal LH, FSH, and testosterone plasma levels indicating postnatal transient activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis as in normal boys. Previous studies have shown that the DAX-1 gene is deleted in the AHC patients with a contiguous gene syndrome and is mutated in nondeletion patients. Most of the point mutations identified in AHC patients were frameshift mutations and stop mutations. In the 15 patients available for molecular analysis of the DAX-1 gene, there were large deletions in 6 patients and point mutations in another 7 patients. All of the point mutations identified in the present study resulted in a nonfunctional truncated DAX-1 protein. Two brothers with primary adrenal insufficiency and a medical history that strongly suggested AHC had no mutation in the DAX-1 gene. Thus, additional, as yet unknown genes must play a part in normal adrenal cortical development.

Abstract:
To obtain competitive advantages in the global market scenario, companies have aimed at reducing logistic costs as well as streamlining the order of fulfillment. In this context the use of tools to efficiently manage the storage, ensuring a best allocation of the products has been growing. The method of the ABC Curve, based on the Principle of Pareto qualifies the portfolio of a company so that products can be separated into classes. The items of Class A deserve special attention since they represent 80% of the financial transactions of a company. On the other hand, the AHP multicriteria tool enables the analysis of several criteria (demand, financial transaction, seasonality, among others) to determine the best alternative to achieve the main goal. The primary aim of this project is to establish a tool/technique to ensure the correct positioning of the products optimized by either the allocation based on the ABC classification or the allocation by prioritizing the products established by the AHP. The tool/technique was implemented in language C and 1,620 loading and unloading tasks were simulated for random allocation, ABC and AHP to ensure the flow of inputs and outputs from the storage. The results show that the system proposed is viable and efficient, as it shortens the distances traveled and streamlines the time of order of fulfillment, reducing the logistic costs. The reductions achieved with the allocations based on the ABC method ensure 8.42% for the traveled distances and 8.43% for the time spent to unload the trunks. The multicriteria tool allowed reductions of 12.81% and 13.47% in the traveled distances and time spent, respectively, to allocate the items into the storage. The project is of great relevance for the area, as it ensures an optimum flow in the movements of the storage, reducing the unnecessary movements.

Conversations among passengers can be assisted by suitable amplification systems, but acoustic coupling might arise feedback and echo effects. Speech intelligibility may result ruined and high channel gains may lead to Larsen effect. Acoustic feedback and echo cancellation methods are needed to keep the system stable. In this work, an hybrid HW/SW Test Bench for AFC algorithms, based on TMS320C6748 processor, is proposed and tested with PEM-AFROW and Suppressor-PEM solutions. Several experiments confirmed the framework suitability under diverse acoustic conditions. Also Dual-Channel scenario has been taken into account, where echo effects must be consid-ered as well. Voice-activity and double-talk detectors have been also included. Performed com-puter simulations have shown the approach effectiveness. Comfort in automotive is also degraded by noises. Active noise control solutions can improve sound quality by playing a proper anti-noise signal through secondary sources. Narrow-band ap-proaches have been widely investigated because of their simplicity and effectiveness cancelling tonal noises. In this work a robust algorithm based on narrow-band FxLMS is also proposed. Simulations show proposed algorithm behaviours under stress conditions, proving that its per-formance is comparable with classic narrow-band one. Adaptive filters based on Kalman control theory has been investigated as well, as an alternative for FxLMS-based algorithms. Kalman approach can overcome some problems of the latter ones, like slow convergence and high sensitivity to the eigenvalue spread at the cost of higher computational requirements. However, narrow-band variants significantly reduce needed taps and still results competitive in a rich series of scenarios, like automotive ones. Various possible solutions are finally presented and their effectiveness are compared to each own FxLMS-based counterpart.

Abstract:
Costs related to inventory are usually a significant amount of the company’s total assets. Despite this, companies in general don’t pay a lot of interest in it, even if the benefits from effective inventory are obvious when it comes to less tied up capital, increased customer satisfaction and better working environment. Permobil AB, Timrå is in an intense period when it comes to revenue and growth. The production unit is aiming for an increased output of 30 % in the next two years. To make this possible the company has to improve their way to distribute and handle material,The purpose of the study is to provide useful information and concrete proposals for action, so that the company can build a strategy for an effective and sustainable solution when it comes to inventory management. Alternative methods for making forecasts are suggested, in order to reach a more nuanced perception of different articles, and how they should be managed. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used in order to give specially selected persons the chance to decide criteria for how the article should be valued. The criteria they agreed about were annual volume value, lead time, frequency rate and purchase price. The other method that was proposed was a two-dimensional model where annual volume value and frequency was the criteria that specified in which class an article should be placed. Both methods resulted in significant changes in comparison to the current solution. For the spare part inventory different forecast methods were tested and compared with the current solution. It turned out that the current forecast method performed worse than both moving average and exponential smoothing with trend. The small sample of ten random articles is not big enough to reject the current solution, but still the result is a reason enough, for the company to control the quality of the forecasts.<br>Kostnader kopplade till lagerverksamheten är ofta en betydande del av företagets totala omsättning.

Following the Deleuzian argument that institutions of enclosure are in crisis because they exist in between diagrams of the disciplinary and control societies, the thesis tests each of the Foucauldian diagrams of discipline, governmentality and control against the ABC as Public Service Broadcaster. It explores issues such as which ABC strategies belong to which diagram, and the ways in which changes in communications technologies altered governing rationales of these diagrams at the ABC. The thesis uses the implementation of ABC Online to explore the idea of the ABC in the late 1990s as operating in between social diagrams. One way of examining this 'in between-ness' is to use the Public Service Broadcasting idea as an instance of arboreal thinking and the internet idea as rhizomic. The thesis employs that model to argue that Public Service Broadcasting as it is practised is not merely an arboreal assemblage, and that actual implementations of the internet are more than merely rhizomic assemblages. The thesis details some of the earliest relations between broadcasting and the internet at the ABC, and describes the relations between rhizomic and arboreal images of the ABC at particular sites and in various discourses. This examination concludes that both ways of imagining the ABC - the arboreal and the rhizomic - have been essential to the success of ABC Online. While the position of the ABC in between social diagrams caused a sense of crisis, ABC Online was in fact successful largely because of its position in between social diagrams. Not only was ABC Online remarkably successful in its first five years, but it was successful in ways which could not be accommodated in such documents as the ABC Charter. The public silences of ABC Online both allowed it to thrive, and conversely supported arboreal stratified ways of defending the ABC. Defences of the ABC that used arboreal thinking as a rhetorical strategy continued to dominate public discussion of the ABC, despite the successes of contrary examples in practice. One such example was the successful implementation of Radio Australia Online at a time when the Mansfield Review sought to limit the scope of the ABC to domestic free-to-air broadcasting. When some ABC Online practices were publicised in relation to the proposed Telstra deal, the resultant controversy concentrated on the non-commercial/commercial boundary at the ABC. The controversy also highlighted fears that the Online environment may alter the ethical relations between the ABC and its publics. In particular, the ethical goals of independence and integrity were perceived as being under threat in the World Wide Web environment. These goals were further problematised within the organisation by the demands of interactive subsites. These subsites demonstrated an altered ethical relation between the ABC and its user in the online environment of the control society.

Abstract:
Immunoconjugates are part of the arsenal of these targeted therapies. Indeed, they aim at delivering, thanks to an antibody directed against overexpressed cancer cell antigens, a highly cytotoxic molecule like auristatins derivatives. The resulting species is called an antibody-drug-conjugate (ADC). By doing so, efficacy of the compound is increased and potential side-effects are limited. Several technologies for grafting the cytotoxic agent to the antibody exist with different levels of homogeneity of the final compound and different levels of difficulty of implementation. Nowadays, technological breakthroughs permit the design of immunoconjugates (ADCs) displaying a controlled drug-to-antibody ratio (DAR) in terms of quantity and position (site-specific)

Full text
Abstract:
The hair cell is a biological sensor that uses microscopic hair-like structures to detect delicate motions of surrounding fluid. Inspired by this principle, we have created an artificial hair cell (AHC) sensory method based on biomolecular transduction for sensing spatial variations in air flow. The key feature of this method is the use of one-dimensional arrays built from modular AHC units which measure local velocity at different points in a flow profile. Each of the AHC units uses thinly extruded glass fibers as mechanical receptors of air velocity. Hair vibrations are converted to current via hydrogel-supported lipid bilayer membranes through their mechanocapacitive properties. Preliminary tests with linear arrays of three AHC units attempt to measure the air source profile with varying position and intensity. Each unit was fabricated with a hair of different length, giving it a unique vibrational response. This technique was inspired by how organisms use hair cells with tuned responses to mechanically process flow stimuli. A significant challenge in processing the sensors’ output was the limitation of one input channel on the current measurement unit, thus each sensor output had to be sent over the same channel. When several AHC units are excited simultaneously by an airflow, the resulting signal is a superposition of each sensor’s individual response. To separate the signals back into their individual measurements, the Hair Frequency Response Decomposition method is developed, which maps the spectral content of a combined output to the location of excitation in the array. This method takes advantage of the AHC’s high signal-to-noise ratio (compared to other membrane-based AHCs) and linear output response to flow velocity. Results show that the bilayers’ consistent spectral responses allow for an accurate localization of sensor excitation within the array. However, temporal variations in bilayer size affect sensitivity properties and make accurate flow velocity estimation difficult. Nevertheless, under stable bilayer conditions the measured velocity profiles matched closely with theoretical predictions. The implementation of the array sensing method demonstrates the sensory capability of bilayer-based AHC arrays, but highlights the difficulties of achieving consistent performance with bio-molecular materials.

Abstract:
A fully hydrogel-supported, artificial hair cell (AHC) sensor based on bilayer membrane mechanotransduction is designed with sensitivity and versatility in mind. Thanks to fabrication improvements from previous generations, the sensor demonstrates peak current outputs in the nanoamp range and can clearly measure inputs as high as 2k Hz. Characterization of the AHC response to base excitation and air pulses show that membrane current oscillates with the first three bending modes of the hair. Output magnitudes reflect of vibrations near the base of the hair. A 2 DOF Rayleigh-Ritz approximation of the system dynamics yields estimates of 19 N/m and 0.0011 Nm/rad for the equivalent linear and torsional stiffness of the hair’s hydrogel base, although double modes suggest non-symmetry in the gel’s linear stiffness. The sensor output scales linearly with applied voltage (1.79 pA/V), avoiding a higher-order dependence on electrowetting effects. The free vibration amplitude of the sensor also increases in a linear fashion with applied airflow pressure (18.4 pA/psi). Based on these sensitivity characteristics, an array sensing strategy for these sensors is proposed.

Abstract:
Adulteration of ginkgo leaf extracts with extracts from flavonol-rich extracts from sources such as Japanese sophora is well documented in the literature. The partial or complete substitution of ginkgo extracts with flavonol-rich ingredients, or highly purified flavonoids (e.g., quercetin or rutin) from other sources (Table 1) was documented as early as 2003, and has been evidenced in over 20 peer-reviewed publications since. This Laboratory Guidance Document (LGD) presents a review of the various analytical methods used to differentiate between authentic ginkgo leaf extracts and ingredients containing adulterating materials. This document can be used in conjunction with the Ginkgo biloba leaf extract Botanical Adulterants Prevention Bulletin published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program in 2018 and the AHP Ginkgo Monograph and Therapeutic Compendium.

Abstract:
Cranberry remains one of the most popular of the ‘healthy’ fruits, with an array of extract products appearing in the botanical dietary supplement markets and a large number of juice products in the beverage industry. There is considerable evidence that both, but especially the extract-based product categories have been subjected to adulteration. This Laboratory Guidance Document is intended to review the analytical technologies used to determine whether cranberry extract products are authentic and, if not, to identify the adulterants involved. This document should be viewed in conjunction with the corresponding Botanical Adulterants Bulletin on Cranberry published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the assessment of the corrosion risk of a pipeline due to alternating currents. The state of the art technique is the use of coupons, which simulate a coating fault and which allow to measure the ac-current density and also to evaluate corrosion products and pits. Recently, different criteria to assess the corrosion risk have been proposed that are based on the ratio between ac- and dc-current density or the instantaneous off-potential (high-speed off-potential measurement) measured on a coupon. Furthermore, the charge needed to oxidize corrosion products (under alkaline conditions) on a corroded steel surface indicates the level of metal loss. These criteria are discussed on the basis of field experience from coupons and from alternating current-corrosion pits on high voltage interfered pipelines. Results from long term laboratory corrosion measurements under constant AC and DC load are presented which indicate that not only a reduction of pipe/ground AC potential but also a careful adjustment of cathodic protection level helps to minimize a.c. corrosion rates. Based on the results from cyclic potentiodynamic experiments under alkaline conditions, a basic model explaining AC corrosion on cathodically protected pipelines has been developed.
