Abstract:
The role of the Ah locus in hexachlorobenzene (HCB)-induced porphyria and the possible involvement of P-450 cytochromes P(1)450 and P(3)450 in the pathogenesis of this disease were investigated in two congenic strains of C57BL/6J mice that differ only at this locus. Female B6-Ahb mice (Ah receptor: approximately 30-70 fmol/mg of cytosolic protein) and B6-Ahd mice (Ah receptor: undetectable) were pretreated with iron (500 mg/kg) and then fed a diet containing 0 or 200 p.p.m. of HCB for up to 17 weeks. Mice from the two strains consumed similar amounts of HCB. Urinary excretion of porphyrins was increased after 7 weeks of HCB treatment in B6-Ahb mice, and after 15 weeks was over 200 times greater than that of mice given iron only. In B6-Ahd mice, porphyrin excretion did not begin to increase until after 13 weeks, and after 15 weeks was only six times greater than that of controls. Similar differences were seen in the 15-week hepatic porphyrin concentrations (B6-Ahb: 1110 +/- 393; B6-Ahd: 17.6 +/- 14.5; controls: approximately 0.20 nmol/g). Uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.37) activity was diminished by 70 and 20% in B6-Ahb B6-Ahd mice respectively after 15 weeks of treatment with HCB. Cytochromes P(1)450 and P(3)450 were measured in hepatic microsomes (microsomal fractions) by radioimmunoassay and immunoblotting, using antisera raised against the orthologous rat isoenzymes P450c and P450d. HCB induced small amounts of a protein recognized by anti-P450c (P(1)450) in B6-Ahd mice, but not in B6-Ahd mice. Relatively large amounts of a protein recognized by anti-P450d (P(3)450) were induced in both strains, but to a somewhat greater extent in the B6-Ahb mice. The hepatic accumulation of HCB at 15 weeks was greater in B6-Ahb than in B6-Ahd mice, in association with elevated hepatic lipid levels in the former strain. The results of this experiment indicate that the Ah locus influences the susceptibility of C57BL/6J mice to HCB-induced porphyria and are consistent with the suggestion that the sustained induction of P(3)450 and/or P(1)450 may be a causative factor in the development of this disease.

Abstract Under the forms listed for the lemma Old High German snecko m. ‚snail‘ also a variant ‹ slecco › is mentioned. The ‑l‑ must then be the result either of a scribal error, a dissimilation or an assimilation. However, there is in Dutch a word for snail that also shows ‑l‑, Middle Dutch slecke (f.). It is argued here that Old High German slecko is a separate lemma that corresponds to Middle Dutch slecke.

Abstract:
Newly transplanted, 3-year-old bare-root white spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss) seedlings were grown in three levels of absolute humidity difference (AHD), under water-stressed and well-watered conditions in growth chambers. Stomatal conductance to CO2 as well as net assimilation were more than twice as high in the low AHD treatment (6.8 μg H2O•cm−3) as in the high AHD treatment (21.0 μg H2O•cm−3). Transpiration rates were uniform among humidity treatments, but in the low AHD treatment water use efficiency was more than double that of the high AHD treatment. Water use efficiency was greatest in the low AHD conditions, in the water-stressed seedlings, and during the time immediately after planting. There were no differences in the number of new roots produced among humidity treatments, despite the different levels of photosynthesis. In the stress treatment, bud flush of seedlings in the high AHD treatment occurred 3 days later than in the low AHD treatment. A field study on the effects of varying aspen (Populustremuloides Michx.) canopies on humidity levels showed that AHD under partial and full canopies was lower than that of the clearcut. Results suggest that silvicultural treatments that promote higher humidity levels on planting sites should improve white spruce seedling photosynthesis immediately after planting.

Abstract:
Acquired hepatocerebral degeneration (AHD) and hepatolenticular degeneration can have similar clinical presentations, but when a chronic liver disease and atypical motor findings coexist, the distinction between AHD and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) can be even more complicated. We describe three cases of AHD (two having HE) with different neuroimaging findings, distinct hepatic diseases and similar motor presentations, all presenting chronic arterial hypertension and weight loss before the disease manifestations. The diagnosis and physiopathology are commented upon and compared with previous reports. In conclusion, there are many correlations among HE, hepatolenticular degeneration and AHD, but the overlapping of AHD and HE could be more common depending on the clinical knowledge and diagnostic criteria adopted for each condition. Since AHD is not considered a priority that affects the liver transplant list, the prognosis in AHD patients remains poor, and flow interruption in portosystemic shunts must always be taken into account.

Full text
Abstract:
We comment on Eichstaedt et al.’s (2015a) claim to have shown that language patterns among Twitter users, aggregated at the level of US counties, predicted county-level mortality rates from atherosclerotic heart disease (AHD), with “negative” language being associated with higher rates of death from AHD and “positive” language associated with lower rates. First, we examine some of Eichstaedt et al.’s apparent assumptions about the nature of AHD, as well as some issues related to the secondary analysis of online data and to considering counties as communities. Next, using the data files supplied by Eichstaedt et al., we reproduce their regression- and correlation-based models, substituting mortality from an alternative cause of death—namely, suicide—as the outcome variable, and observe that the purported associations between “negative” and “positive” language and mortality are reversed when suicide is used as the outcome variable. We identify numerous other conceptual and methodological limitations that call into question the robustness and generalizability of Eichstaedt et al.’s claims, even when these are based on the results of their ridge regression/machine learning model. We conclude that there is no good evidence that analyzing Twitter data in bulk in this way can add anything useful to our ability to understand geographical variation in AHD mortality rates.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated (1) the effect of repetitive weight-relief raises (WR) and shoulder external rotation (ER) on the acromiohumeral distance (AHD) among manual wheelchair users (MWUs) and (2) the relationship between shoulder pain, subject characteristics, and AHD changes. Twenty-three MWUs underwent ultrasound imaging of the nondominant shoulder in an unloaded baseline position and while holding a WR position before and after the WR/ER tasks. Pairedt-tests and Spearman correlational analysis were used to assess differences in the AHD before and after each task and the relationships between pain, subject characteristics, and the AHD measures. A significant reduction in the subacromial space (P<0.01) occurred when subjects performed a WR position compared to baseline. Individuals with increased years of disability had greater AHD percentage narrowing after WR (P=0.008). Increased shoulder pain was associated with AHD percentage narrowing after ER (P≤0.007). The results support clinical practice guidelines that recommend MWUs limit WR to preserve shoulder function. The isolated repetitive shoulder activity did not contribute to the changes of subacromial space in MWUs. The ultrasonographic measurement of the AHD may be a target for identifying future interventions that prevent pain.

Abstract:
Context: Performing shoulder-abduction exercises with scapular retraction has been theorized to reduce the potential for shoulder impingement. However, objective data to support this premise are lacking. Objective: To evaluate the influence of active scapular retraction on acromiohumeral distance (AHD) at 4 shoulder-abduction angles using real-time ultrasound. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: University laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Twenty asymptomatic individuals (10 men, 10 women; age = 22.9 ± 2.8 years, height = 169.3 ± 9.5 cm, mass = 65.5 ± 12.9 kg) were recruited. Main Outcome Measure(s): Real-time ultrasound images of AHD were obtained during nonretracted and retracted scapular conditions at 0°, 45°, 60°, and 90° of shoulder abduction. A 2-factor analysis of variance with repeated measures was used to evaluate the influence of shoulder retraction on AHD across shoulder-abduction angles. Results: A scapular-retraction condition × shoulder-abduction–angle interaction for AHD was found (F3,57 = 4.56, P = .006). The AHD was smaller at 0° (10.5 versus 11.2 mm, respectively; t19 = 2.22, P = .04) but larger at 90° (9.4 versus 8.7 mm, respectively; t19 = −2.30, P = .04) of shoulder abduction during the retracted than the nonretracted condition. No differences in AHD were observed between conditions at 45° (t19 = 1.45, P = .16) and 60° (t19 = 1.17, P = .86) of abduction. Conclusions: The observed differences in AHD at 0° and 90° of shoulder abduction were small and did not exceed the established minimal detectable change for either angle. Our findings suggest that active scapular retraction during shoulder abduction has a minimal influence on AHD at 0° and 90° in healthy individuals. Further investigations are needed to determine whether scapular retraction influences AHD in individuals with subacromial impingement.

Abstract:
We reviewed case records from the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) spanning 25 years (1990–2014) for all deer accessions submitted to CAHFS for pathology and/or histopathology, with and without a diagnosis of adenoviral hemorrhagic disease (AHD), in order to determine the prevalence of AHD in California. We also examined spatial and temporal distribution, age, and mule deer subspecies in deer that died from AHD. Of 483 deer submitted to CAHFS for diagnostic testing in 1990–2014, 17.2% were diagnosed with confirmed AHD, and 26.5% were confirmed plus suspected cases of AHD. Columbian black-tailed deer ( Odocoileus hemionus columbianus), particularly fawns and juveniles, were most frequently affected. Deer adenovirus ( Odocoileus adenovirus 1; OdAdV-1) was detected by immunohistochemistry in archived CDFW formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from deer that died in mortality events in 1981, 1983, and 1986–1987. OdAdV-1 is a common cause of hemorrhagic disease mortality events in California deer, and mortality as a result of AHD is documented as early as 1981.

Abstract:
When manufacturing products for medicinal use it is essential to reduce the level of cross-contamination. By carrying out a cleaning validation study the effectiveness of the cleaning process is evaluated to see what needs to be done to reach the criteria that are demanded. The main purpose of this thesis has been to plan and execute a pilot study for a cleaning validation of the production system where AHD 2000, a hand disinfection product, is being produced. A physical inspection of the production system was undertaken and several so called critical areas where pointed out where it is possible that the cleaning process varies in its effectiveness. To evaluate its effectiveness three different sampling methods was undertaken; a swab test, a rinsing test and a visual inspection. To evaluate these tests, analysis of the samples from the swab test and rinse test was studied where the level of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the samples where measured. Acceptance criteria for the two sampling methods were calculated in order to know which levels of maximum carry over from a previous product that could be accepted. The accepted limits are based on a general limit, usually these limits are in the range 10-500 ppm of a previously manufactured batch. For the visual inspection a physical exam of the critical points was performed where signs of visible residue were noted. The results from the swab test for all critical areas were below the acceptance criteria and thus the criteria for the swab test was accepted. As for the rinsing test the results were slightly above the acceptance criteria but were regarded as acceptable. The visual inspection showed no signs of visible traces of product. Based on the results, the three criteria are therefore satisfied and the cleaning process was regarded to be effective enough to remove traces from a previously produced product.

Abstract:
The paper presents work in progress on the interaction between information structure and word order in Old High German based on data from the Tatian translation (9th century).
The examination of the position of the finite verb in correspondence with the pragmatic status of discourse referents reveals an overall tendency for verb-initial order in thetic/all-focus sentences, whereas in categorical/topic-comment sentences verb-second placement with an initial topic constituent is preferred.
This conclusion provides support for the hypothesis stated in Donhauser & Hinterhölzl (2003) that the finite verb form in Early Germanic serves to distinguish the information-structural domains of Topic and Focus.
Finally, the investigation sheds light on the process of language change that led to the overall spread of verb-second in main clauses of modern German.

Tao, Yingwen. "Forging identities in the multicultural society : cultural landscape construction in Langde, China." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/277412.

Abstract:
The use of heritage as a state tool to construct national identity has been fervently explored (e.g. Daniels 1993 and Kohl 1998). However, the ways in which ethnic minority communities in multicultural societies, respond to the Authorised Heritage Discourse’ (AHD) (Smith 2006) as the product of nationalism is relatively under-researched (Caffyn and Lutz 1999, Waterton 2010). This dissertation focuses on the case study of the Miao ethnic minority’s cultural landscapes in China, which have been altered continuously by both the national and local powers that seek to construct collective identities. The dissertation asserts that ethnic minority heritage practices in multicultural societies need to be understood as being profoundly shaped by nationalist discourses and practices. My ethnographic research, of Langde, a Miao village founded in the 14th century, addresses historical and contemporary identity negotiations between the local and the national, the ethnic minority and the majority, but also the ways in which ethnic minority groups and the state strive to shape their collective identities through concrete heritage practices. Such construction has in turn reinforced the local Miao identity through everyday heritage practices. The AHD in China, which is a technology of nationalism, has been based on the assumption of the ‘superior’ cultural status of Han as the majority. Yet, conversely it is also entwined with how ethnic minority groups have actively shaped their own identities. By employing visual ethnography, this dissertation reveals a Communist vision of multiculturalism, which combines cultural hegemony and community empowerment. The dissertation concludes by proposing an expansion to the framework for understanding how the AHD of ethnic minority heritage is made and perceived. Looking at minority heritage’s entanglement with nationalism provides a window of understanding into how collective identities at national and local levels are negotiated and reconstructed.

Abstract:
The objectives of this study are to critically map and analyse past and current  discussions, negotiations and social processes that take place and relate to conditions created by living in- or monitoring the World Heritage City Angra do Heroísmo in the Azores, Portugal. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviews with the stakeholders in the city, the purpose has been to study how, and with what result and consequences, contested values, interests, rhetoric and powers are mobilized and made into dynamic forces for these stakeholders. Hence, this thesis gives a chronological presentation of selected issues and discussions, which have been taking place in the city from 1980 to 2012. The first subjects attended to are the 1980 earthquake and the nomination process which led to the inscription of Angra to the World Heritage List in 1983. However, some of the core objectives relate to the implications of living in a World Heritage City, given the preservation provisions which follow such a classified area. The aim has further been to assess the point of departure for the official monitors and their views on monitoring a vibrant historical area. The discussions analysed relate to the predicaments occurring when modern development is set up against preservation. However, the analyses show how policies and preservation ideals change, as well as how powers and authorities are challenged and affected by forces within and outside the “authorized heritage discourse”. Finally, this study has assessed the notions of pride, local attachment and identity among the inhabitants in Angra. The World Heritage Status can trigger a double sense of feelings; on the one side it holds emotions related to pride and recognition, on the other it represents obstacles for living- and developing the city in accordance with the present needs. World Heritage and tourism are closely linked, and this investigation explores how the stakeholders in Angra relate to the possibilities and threats which tourism holds. Angra represents a site where there is a limited influx of tourist, and we can see how most stakeholders speak for a quality-based tourism. In this respect, one could say there is a prevailing consensus among the stakeholders. Finally, this study has assessed the notions of pride, local attachment and identity among the inhabitants in Angra. These sensations are related to the historical cityscape, an environment which also frames personal experiences and processes. The World Heritage Status can trigger a double sense of feelings; on the one side it holds emotions related to pride and recognition, on the other it represents obstacles for living- and developing the city in accordance with the present needs. Angra do Heroísmo is studied for its particularities, yet comparisons made with other studies reveal that the matters and aspects addressed in this thesis can be universal rather than particular.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine whether parents of children with ADHD/ADD felt that their children received the support they needed in school and how the children were treated by the school staff. Furthermore, we examined how parents felt that the interaction between the school and the student affected their children. The study used a qualitative method in which the collected material was interpreted though symbolic interactionism and labeling theory. Four parents with children with ADHD/ADD have been interviewed. The results showed that parents felt that their children had inadequate or no assistance and some children were treated unfavorably by school staff. Parents also suggested that the interaction between school and child affected the child negatively because they were unfavorably treated and did not receive sufficient support. The conclusion of the study showed that the parents felt that school support activities and attitudes of the staff had a negative effect on their children’s ability to cope with school and their self-image.

Abstract:
Sporadic cases of thromboembolic events have been reported in patients with congenital factor XII deficiency and a relationship with a reduced intrinsic fibrinolysis has been suggested. We report here the results of clinical and laboratory investigations in 10 new families comprising 15 homozygotes (age 16-72) and 14 heterozygotes (age 18-65).In homozygotes, kaolin-activated-PTT was indefinitely prolonged and F XII activity and antigen were undetectable, whereas functional assays . of high molecular weight kininogen ahd kallikrein yielded normal values. Intrinsic fibrinolytic activity - assayed on fibrin plate by measuring lysis zones determined i. by euglobulin fraction, obtained in presence of dextran sulphate and flufenamate (Blood activator inventory test, Kluft 1979) - was reduced in all homozygous pts. to about 50% of normal (range 15-70%; normal range 80-120%); normal values were observed in all heterozygotes. Basal extrinsic fibrinolytic activity (measured after addition of Cl-inhibitor) was absent or minimal as in normal controls. None of our patients showed evidence of thrombotic diathesis. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that a reduced intrinsic fibrinolysis, as assayed by blood activator inventory test, is a common finding in F XII deficiency. The absence of thrombotic diathesis in our cases suggests that, this defect is probably devoid of any clinical significance.

Abstract:
The distribution of thrombomodulin (TM) antigen (Ag) was studied in the rabbit using an affinity-purified antibody raised against rabbit TM in a goat. Tissues were obtained from 8 New Zealand rabbits. Paraffin-embedded sections were prepared from various organs. Staining was performed using the avidin-biotin peroxi dase method. TM was found to be best and most consistently preserved after perfusion of the vasculature with fixative (buffered formalin) i.e. perfusion of the systemic vasculature via the ascending aorta and individual perfusion of the pulmonary, portal, coronary vasculature via the appropriate artery or vein. A positive reaction was observed on the entire endothelial surface of the vascular system: arteries, veins ahd capillaries. In contrast, parenchyma, secretory epithelia, connective tissue, cartilage, bone and nerve tissue were not stained.Interestingly, TM antigen was also found on the serosae: peritoneum, pericardium and epicardium and in the intralobular folds of the pleura, on the synovial membrane of the knee joint and on the entire surface of the spinal and cerebral arachnoid. The reaction was maximal on the intima of the large arteries, on the arachnoid and on the synovial membrane. The intensity of the reac tion did not depend on the organ examined but on the perfusion quality, except for arachnoidal and synovial membranes which were stained even without initial perfusion. The presence of TM on the membranes of body cavities was confirmed by the recovery of TM activity (as cofactor of protein C activation by thrombin in a chromogenic assay) in intraperitoneal lavage in vivo and in fluid used to rinse the brain arachnoidal surface ex vivo. These findings suggest the presence of potent anticoagulant mechanisms in the systems of slow circulating fluids such as the cerebrospinal and synovial fluids and in the virtual spaces of the serosae. While no thrombin is present there in physiological conditions, anticoagulant activity in these locations may be very important in case of even mild permeability changes, such as in inflammation. As anticoagulant systems assure the fluidity of blood in the vasculature, the TM(-PC) system on body cavities linings may assure free mobility and absence of adhesion of the membranes.
