Abstract:
This thesis investigates the nature of environmental racism, a by-product of “slow violence” under capitalism, from the perspective of Jain philosophy. By observing slow violence through the lens of Jain doctrine and ethics, I investigate whether the central tenets of ahimsa and karma are philosophically anti-capitalist, and if there are facets within Jain ethics supporting slow violence. By analyzing the ascetic and lay ethical models, I conclude that the maximization of profit and private acquisition of lands/resources are capitalist attributes that cannot thrive efficiently under a proper Jain ethical model centered on ahimsa (non-harm, non-violence) and world-denying/world-renouncing practices. Conversely, karma and Jain cosmology has the potential to support slow violence when considering their philosophical and fatalistic implications. Furthermore, by connecting the theory of slow violence with the theory of microaggressions, I assert that, while resolving microaggressions, Jainism’s highly individualistic ethical system can hinder confronting slow violence.

Abstract:

The attacks of September 11, 2001 have done more to focus attention on the conjunction of religion and conflict than any other event in recent history. Although much international research has focused since then on the role of Islam, religiously inspired violence is also found in countries as diverse as Thailand, Burma, or Sri Lanka, where Buddhism plays a central role. This paper addresses how these realities are reflected in two Swedish high school textbooks on religion. The thesis calls into question the manner in which Buddhism is presented in schoolbooks as the most probable candidate to be a conflict-free religion.

Using Fairclough’s discourse analysis theoretical framework and Hellspong’s structural analysis, the thesis critically examines the relationship between text, the discourse practice in which text is produced and the wider social practices. The study concludes that schoolbooks are committed to presenting Buddhism as virtually conflict-free by means of rhetorical procedures which focus mainly on what is assumed to be “the most important” message of Tibetan Buddhism and its portal figure, Dalai lama – namely peace. At the same time, the author suggests that there is a strong intertextuality between the texts of the schoolbooks and the romanticised views of Dalai lama existent in three contemporary Hollywood films.

The limits of the paper are finally addressed and various paths to future research are suggested, in an effort to improve schoolbooks, since pedagogical texts structure the students’ way of thinking about Buddhism in particular, and religion in general.

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is the most common cause of hemolytic anemia and has been associated with hypercoagulable states. The objectives of this study were: to evaluate the incidence of hemostatic, renal and hematological abnormalities, and the prevalence immunoglobulin’s classes involved in IMHA. 87 anemic dogs were selected and submitted to Coomb’s test, flow cytometry (FC) and auto-agglutination, along with CBC, reticulocyte count, hemostatic and renal profile, hemoparasite search in peripheral blood smears, and Ehrlichia sp and leptospirosis tests. The results were analyzed by t test, Mann-Whitney or Kruskal-Wallis at 5% of significance. 61 dogs (70.11%) were positive to IMHA by CF, 31 (35.63%) by Coomb's test and 24 (27.58%) by auto-agglutination. There wasn’t a predominance of IgG or IgM involvement. The hematological and clinical changes in dogs with IMHA included macrocytic, hypochromic regenerative anemia, and reticulocytosis, as well as icterus, fever, auto-agglutination, hyperglobulinemia and bilirubinuria. 9.8% of dogs with IMHA had spherocytosis, 29.5% leukocytosis, 39.6% neutrophilia and 72.1% thrombocytopenia. Proteinuria and the increase in urine protein creatinine ratio reveal evidences of renal injury. There were statistical differences between the control group and anemic dogs positive or negative for IHMA to the following tests: platelet count, PT, APTT, AT, FDP and D-dimer. 25 positive dogs and seven negative dogs for IMHA were in a thromboembolic state. These hemostatic changes observed in both groups of anemic dogs may be attributed to the predominant underlying cause of anemia, since 74.6% of IHMA cases were attributed to infectious diseases; mostly Ehrlichia sp related

Abstract: Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is the most prevalent immune disorder in dogs. This condition is characterized as a type II hypersensitivity and leads to the premature destruction of red blood cells. Among the main complications, hypercoagulability, which predisposes dogs to disseminated intravascular coagulation and pulmonary thromboembolism, is the most important and leading cause of death in more than 80% of cases. Primary IMHA cannot be associated with an obvious predisposition, besides breed predilection, because of this it is a diagnostic exclusion. Secondary IMHA is related to several agents, and among the infectious ones, ehrlichiosis stands out. Animal selection for this study was based on hematological, biochemical, and urine tests. Dogs with moderate to severe anemia (hematocrit ≤ 25%), with symptoms of immune-mediated hemolysis, such as spherocytosis, positive saline agglutination, bilirubinuria and/or hemoglobinuria, were included. The treatment is directed towards immune response suppression, for which glucocorticoids and mycophenolate mofetil are frequently used. This study aimed to clarify whether the thrombotic risk changes after the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy with mycophenolate mofetil, through thromboelastometry, in animals with primary IMHA and secondary to E. canis infection. The animals under study were submitted to hemogram, reticulocyte count, spherocytosis screening, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, urinary protein/creatinine ratio... Abstract:
The city of Palitana, India, has become the first region known to legally install de facto meat bans, essentially making Palitana a vegetarian city by law. These legal steps seem to be the direct result of social pressure put on local legislators in the form of a mass hunger strike performed by local Jain monks. This thesis is aimed at discussing the background of this case, its connections to a broader general discussion of moral and ethical vegetarianism, and arguments in favor of and against the legal installment of a meat ban in the Palitana case. It is concluded that although the meat ban is ideologically and theoretically speaking ethically justifiable and defensible it is in practice, at least in its current form, not ethically desirable.

Koskela, A. (Anni). "Wolverine habitat selection, diet and conservation genetics." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2013. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526202273.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Rare and elusive species are difficult to study, because they are usually secretive, solitary, occur at low densities and have large home ranges. Wolverines (Gulo gulo) can both hunt and scavenge for food. In Fennoscandia, wolverines co-exist with either wild or semi-domesticated reindeer, which constitute their most important winter food. Approximately half of the 180–220 Finnish wolverines are found in northern Finland within the reindeer management area. However, the other half of the population is distributed in eastern and central Finland, and the ecology of wolverines especially in this area is poorly known. This research examined the habitat selection, diet and population genetics of wolverines in northern and eastern Finland. The results suggest that wolf presence is one of the most important variables influencing the habitat selection of wolverines. This finding supports the speculative idea that wolverines might benefit from being sympatric with wolves through increased scavenging opportunities. Furthermore, both the reproductive status of wolverines and the availability of different prey items were found to affect the wolverine diet. In northern Finland, semi-domesticated reindeer and mountain hare were the most frequently utilized prey species for breeding female wolverines. In eastern Finland, the most important food source for breeding females was moose carrion, whereas males and non-breeding females heavily utilized mountain hares. These results support the predictions of the optimal foraging theory, suggesting that wolverines opportunistically utilize the food source that is most energy-efficiently available. In areas with a low density of medium-sized ungulates, scavenging of wolf- and human-killed carrion plays an essential role in food acquisition by wolverines. According to the results of a population genetics investigation, two wolverine subpopulations exist in Finland: a northern and an eastern one. The overall genetic variability was found to be low, and signs of a recent population bottleneck were detected in both populations. It is likely that the wolverine populations in Finland would benefit from improved connectivity between them, but also with neighbouring populations in Scandinavia and north-eastern Russia

Abstract:
The popularization of academic spaces that combine Buddhist philosophy with the literature of the Romantic period – a discipline I refer to as Buddhist Romantic Studies – have exposed the lack of scholarly attention Samuel Taylor Coleridge and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner have received within such studies. Validating Coleridge’s right to exist within Buddhist Romantic spheres, my thesis argues that Coleridge was cognizant of Buddhism through historical and textual encounters. To create a space for The Rime within Buddhist Romantic Studies, my thesis provides an interpretation of the poem that centers on the concept of prajna, or wisdom, as a vital tool for cultivating the mind. Focusing on prajna, I argue that the Mariner’s didactic story traces his cognitive voyage from ignorance to enlightenment. By examining The Rime within the framework of Buddhism, readers will also be able to grasp the importance of cultivating the mind and transcending ignorance.

After the guitar poet, Chao-hsuan Lu (1929-), Ahim Tan (1968-) is considered as one of the most representative guitar music composer in Taiwan. Because of the background of his native nature and many years of study experience in France, his works possess genuine innovations with the compatible spirit and gathering each other together, such as the musical materials from Taiwan, China, and the West, either from the ancient and the modern times. In a view of panoramic composition technique, he creates unique musical languages by personal experiments. Finished in 2003,《Caprices of Tamsui Suite》is listed as one of his best guitar works. 《Caprices of Tamsui Suite》, a program music, contains eight different titles of movements which are with strong characteristics of musical painting. This work is derived from composer’s experiences of life scenes, he transformed each inmost scene into beautiful musical notes, as same as the French composer Claude Debussy(1862-1918) inverted the prevailing musical-painting analogy and identified his music with the Impressionistic painting of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). This study consists of five parts. The first is the composer’s biography and the work’s compositional background. The second deals with musical styles of the composition and characteristics of the musical painting. The third part aims at musical analysis of each movement including form, chord progression, rhythm, melody and figure. Explanations of special performing techniques and suggestions of difficult fingerings are provided in the fourth part. The fifth part is an addendum including composer’s portfolio, some words about these pieces from composer, interview excerpt with composer, and corrigenda for published scores. Under the research in various facets, the author hopes it will benefit the performers a comprehensive and a profound understanding towards this representative work of Taiwan guitar music.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common cancers amoung Chinese living in southern China, Hong-Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Our laboratory has established nine NPC cell lines from NPC patients. These cell lines have been used to study various topics in the past several years. The treatment of cancer requires the cooperative efforts of widely divergent medical specialities. In the past, the radiotherapy and surgical removal of NPC tumor masses have been applied for years. Now, new chemo-therapeautic drugs have created important roles of treatment in cancer. In this setting the clinical development of a treatment must be based on a thorough understatnding of the potential for beneficial response and of the pharmacologic, pathologic, toxicological, and physiological knowledge. The genetic instability, heterogeneity, and high mutation rate of cancer cells cause the carcinoma to survive after chemotherapy. The cancer cells might activate their multi-drug resistant potential and resulting in difficulty to treat the tumor. A new solution for multi-drug resistance is the way of anti-angiogenesis. Since the vascular endothelial cells belong to normal cells, there’s no problem with the multi-drug resistance. The present experiment included three anti-cancer drugs to treat NPC cells. (1) AHMA-Ethyl-Carbamate (AHMA-EC): This chemical compound was provided by Dr. Su from Academia Sinica, Taipei. We proved that this drug can kill NPC cells in vitro and in vivo. The anti-cancer phenomenon might be caused through more than one pathways. One possible mechanism was as follow: AHMA-EC bound to DNA and topoisomerase Ⅱ, then the complex inhibited transcription of Topo Ⅱ. Finally, AHMA-EC causes apoptosis. The other pathway was to supress hWee 1, a kinase transcript, resulting in blocking cell cycle at G2/M phase, AHMA-EC may also involve other undefined mechanism to tumor cells. We have also set up a positive control experiment with VP-16 (VepesidTM), an anti-cancer chemo -therapeutic compound which also inhibited Topo II enzyme activity. The result showed that VP-16 also inhibited both Topo II and hWee 1 transcription. In contrast to AHMA-EC, the effective dose of VP-16 was larger than AHMA-EC. In conclusion, AHMA—EC can kill and surpress tumor cell proliferation in the animal model experiment. AHMA-EC is less toxic than VP-16. AHMA-EC can be a potential anti-cancer drug in clinical treatment. (2) Angiostatin: We set up an animal model with NPC tumors to study the anti-cancer effect of angiostatin. Our results show that angiostatin can inhibit human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVEC). In animal model experiments, angiostatin did inhibit the growth of NPC tumor masses on SCID mice. These result proved that the theory of anti-cancer with anti-angiogenesis is effective. For developing new way to anti-tumor, anti-angiogenesis will be a good new method to treat tumor mass. (3) P1: This polypeptide is designed containing arginine-glycine-aspartate sequence. P1 could inhibit tumor partially in animal model. We also found that RGD peptide can inhibit HUVEC. In animal model experiments, P1 could inhibit tumor mass partially. We should study more detail about P1 function to identify its mechanism and to find the way to protect the peptide degraded in vivo.

Abstract:
The current trend of global violence and their impact on families and communities as well as the field of university education is scary for a society that is struggling with this false sense of apathy and complacency. How did the ordinary people get seduced to the idea that there is no way out of this global assault? How then do we extricate ourselves from this “tortured consciousness” (Asante, 2007) and this false sense of “nihilism” (West, 1994) and recoup this “incommensurable loss” (Simmons, 2010) to global violence? Even more crucial, where is the place of education in retrieving this incommensurable loss while providing hope and possibility for a better future? Provoked by the desire to have answers to these questions, the dissertation relies on the knowledge and experiences of twenty qualitatively selected university activists and existing literature to critically examine the non-violent praxes of Gandhi and King, Jr. and their pedagogical implications for transformative university education. The dissertation further draws on the knowledge of Frantz Fanon and Malcolm X to bring complex and nuanced readings to violence and non-violence. The dissertation notes that violence and non-violence are not mutually exclusive as already known. The dissertation also notes that while resistive violence may be justified, it does not necessarily guarantee true transformation, reconciliation, and healing. Instead, love, humility, truth, dialogue, non-violent direct action, discipline, and spirituality are salient in achieving true transformation in university activism. The dissertation further observes that educational activism is more than walking on the street with placards to protest against institutional violence. Sometimes, the secret activism that is done strategically within the corridors of power can achieve more far-reaching results than the open protest against power on the street. The dissertation concludes with six key non-violent strategies that can help in social and political mobilization of university students for transformative university education.

Sá, Filipa Farate. "Anemia hemolítica imunomediada canina (abordagem terapêutica)." Master's thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.26/16787.

Abstract:
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), is one of the most common causes of hemolysis in dogs, and is associated with a high mortality rate. Most of the fatalities occur in the first two weeks of treatment, mainly related with thromboembolic complications. The role of glucocorticoids is established as being one of the most effective therapies and there is enough evidence documenting the positive association between these drugs and survival rates. Several protocols of association of other immunosuppressive drugs and glucocorticoids have been described, mainly in cases with poor prognosis at presentation or with poor response to glucocorticoid therapy. The results obtained in these studies, regarding survival rate and effectiveness, have been difficult to compare, due to the reduced size of the population in study, heterogenicity of the populations, lack of standardized protocols and lack of long term follow-up. New immunomodulatory drugs have been studied as adjuvant therapy for this disease but despite promising results, have failed to improve mortality rates. The main limitations to the current use of these drugs is related with their high cost and lack of availability. The aim of this study is to make a revision of the current literature about the therapeutic approach to this disease beginning with a brief introduction about the fundamental aspects.
