Paz, Anthony. "The Tensions of Karma and Ahimsa: Jain Ethics, Capitalism, and Slow Violence." FIU Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2476.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the nature of environmental racism, a by-product of “slow violence” under capitalism, from the perspective of Jain philosophy. By observing slow violence through the lens of Jain doctrine and ethics, I investigate whether the central tenets of ahimsa and karma are philosophically anti-capitalist, and if there are facets within Jain ethics supporting slow violence. By analyzing the ascetic and lay ethical models, I conclude that the maximization of profit and private acquisition of lands/resources are capitalist attributes that cannot thrive efficiently under a proper Jain ethical model centered on ahimsa (non-harm, non-violence) and world-denying/world-renouncing practices. Conversely, karma and Jain cosmology has the potential to support slow violence when considering their philosophical and fatalistic implications. Furthermore, by connecting the theory of slow violence with the theory of microaggressions, I assert that, while resolving microaggressions, Jainism’s highly individualistic ethical system can hinder confronting slow violence.

Abstract:

The attacks of September 11, 2001 have done more to focus attention on the conjunction of religion and conflict than any other event in recent history. Although much international research has focused since then on the role of Islam, religiously inspired violence is also found in countries as diverse as Thailand, Burma, or Sri Lanka, where Buddhism plays a central role. This paper addresses how these realities are reflected in two Swedish high school textbooks on religion. The thesis calls into question the manner in which Buddhism is presented in schoolbooks as the most probable candidate to be a conflict-free religion.

Using Fairclough’s discourse analysis theoretical framework and Hellspong’s structural analysis, the thesis critically examines the relationship between text, the discourse practice in which text is produced and the wider social practices. The study concludes that schoolbooks are committed to presenting Buddhism as virtually conflict-free by means of rhetorical procedures which focus mainly on what is assumed to be “the most important” message of Tibetan Buddhism and its portal figure, Dalai lama – namely peace. At the same time, the author suggests that there is a strong intertextuality between the texts of the schoolbooks and the romanticised views of Dalai lama existent in three contemporary Hollywood films.

The limits of the paper are finally addressed and various paths to future research are suggested, in an effort to improve schoolbooks, since pedagogical texts structure the students’ way of thinking about Buddhism in particular, and religion in general.

Abstract:
The city of Palitana, India, has become the first region known to legally install de facto meat bans, essentially making Palitana a vegetarian city by law. These legal steps seem to be the direct result of social pressure put on local legislators in the form of a mass hunger strike performed by local Jain monks. This thesis is aimed at discussing the background of this case, its connections to a broader general discussion of moral and ethical vegetarianism, and arguments in favor of and against the legal installment of a meat ban in the Palitana case. It is concluded that although the meat ban is ideologically and theoretically speaking ethically justifiable and defensible it is in practice, at least in its current form, not ethically desirable.

India is celebrated as the largest democracy in the world but is it truly democratic? Is it the nation-state that its founder’s envisioned it to be? Has it addressed it ancient issue of social diversity? This paper seeks to assess the present problem faced by the Indian Democracy; problems based on India’s inherent social diversity. Furthermore the paper seeks to recommend a solution based on Amartya Sen’s Open Impartiality approach that will allow the country to reassess its democratic platform. The paper also aims at providing a starting point to execute Sen’s approach by exploring the vision of two of India’s independence leaders: Mohandas Karamchandra Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore.

Abstract:

Obesity is a risk factor for chronic diseases among the ethnic minorities for adult immigrants in the United States. There have been many research studies conducted to examine the relationship between the predictors and obesity in minority groups in the United States, that relationship was unknown in Meskhetian Turk (Ahiska) immigrant populations. Guided by social ecological model and acculturation theory, this study examined the predictors of obesity in the Meskhetian Turk (Ahiska) immigrant population in the western United States. Data were collected from 109 participants using CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, Stephenson Multigroup Acculturation Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale. Participants were recruited through flyers in a public setting and data were analyzed through SPSS using logistic regression and Spearman’s correlation. The result of the study showed no statistical association between obesity and the predictors of age, gender, socio-economic status, physical activity, acculturation, and perceived stress. This study, however, showed a significant association between daily vegetable, fruit, and hamburger, cheeseburger or meat loaf consumption and obesity, and weekly vegetable consumption, monthly hamburger, cheeseburger or meat loaf consumption and moderate/morbid obesity. The study findings suggest that, through targeted community-based intervention and education programs, there is positive social change in the value of healthy lifestyle and the impact of the predictors of obesity, especially diet of Meskhetian Turk (Ahiska) immigrant population in the United States. Further investigation should focus into other causes of obesity using a larger sample size.

Abstract:
This thesis examines Jaina strategies for justifying violence (himsa) in societal self-defense in contradistinction to the religion's overwhelming emphasis on nonviolence (ahimsa). The thesis' main focus is an ethnographic study of the views on societal self-defense of some contemporary lay Jainas in Delhi and Jaipur, India. I compare these views with the textual-historical Jaina position on ksatriya-dharma (the duty of kings) and "Just War," as advanced through ancient and medieval Jaina texts. Recent ethnographies omit the issue of Jaina attitudes to self-defense almost entirely. However, since India's nuclear tests in 1998, India has become a major Asian political, social and economic power. Indian Jainas have changed along with other Indians in the way that they see themselves in relation to the world and to other Indians. My findings suggest that major changes might have occurred since the latest ethnographic studies of Jainism in the nineties.

Fulhu, Miraz Mohamed. "Active human intelligence for smart grid (AHISG) : feedback control of remote power systems." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9582.

Full text
Abstract:
Fuel supply issues are a major concern in remote island communities and this is an engineering field that needs to be analyzed in detail for transition to sustainable energy systems. Power generation in remote communities such as the islands of the Maldives relies on power generation systems primarily dependent on diesel generators. As a consequence, power generation is easily disrupted by factors such as the delay in transportation of diesel or rises in fuel price, which limits shipment quantity. People living in remote communities experience power outages often, but find them just as disruptive as people who are connected to national power grids. The use of renewable energy sources could help to improve this situation, however, such systems require huge initial investments. Remote power systems often operate with the help of financial support from profit-making private agencies and government funding. Therefore, investing in such hybrid systems is uncommon. Current electrical power generation systems operating in remote communities adopt an open loop control system, where the power supplier generates power according to customer demand. In the event of generation constraints, the supplier has no choice but to limit the power supplied and this often results in power cuts. Most smart grids that are being established in developed grids adopt a closed loop feedback control system. The smart grids integrated with demand side management tools enable the power supplier to keep customers informed about their daily energy consumption. Electric utility companies use different demand response techniques to achieve peak energy demand reduction by eliciting behavior change. Their feedback information is commonly based on factors such as cost of energy, environmental concerns (carbon dioxide intensity) and the risk of black-outs due to peak loads. However, there is no information available on the significant link between the constraints in resources and the feedback to the customers. In resource-constrained power grids such as those in remote areas, there is a critical relationship between customer demand and the availability of power generation resources. This thesis develops a feedback control strategy that can be adopted by the electrical power suppliers to manage a resource-constrained remote electric power grid such that the most essential load requirements of the customers are always met. The control design introduces a new concept of demand response called participatory demand response (PDR). PDR technique involves cooperative behavior of the entire community to achieve quality of life objectives. It proposes the idea that if customers understand the level of constraint faced by the supplier, they will voluntarily participate in managing their loads, rather than just responding to a rise in the cost of energy. Implementation of the PDR design in a mini-grid consists of four main steps. First, the end-use loads have to be characterized using energy audits, and then they have to be classified further into three different levels of essentiality. Second, the utility records have to be obtained and the hourly variation factors for the appliances have to be calculated. Third, the reference demand curves have to be generated. Finally, the operator control system has to be designed and applied to train the utility operators. A PDR case study was conducted in the Maldives, on the island of Fenfushi. The results show that a significant reduction in energy use was achieved by implementing the PDR design on the island. The overall results from five different constraint scenarios practiced on the island showed that during medium constrained situations, load reductions varied between 4.5kW (5.8%) and 7.7kW (11.3%). A reduction of as much as 10.7kW (15%) was achieved from the community during a severely constrained situation.

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is the most common cause of hemolytic anemia and has been associated with hypercoagulable states. The objectives of this study were: to evaluate the incidence of hemostatic, renal and hematological abnormalities, and the prevalence immunoglobulin’s classes involved in IMHA. 87 anemic dogs were selected and submitted to Coomb’s test, flow cytometry (FC) and auto-agglutination, along with CBC, reticulocyte count, hemostatic and renal profile, hemoparasite search in peripheral blood smears, and Ehrlichia sp and leptospirosis tests. The results were analyzed by t test, Mann-Whitney or Kruskal-Wallis at 5% of significance. 61 dogs (70.11%) were positive to IMHA by CF, 31 (35.63%) by Coomb's test and 24 (27.58%) by auto-agglutination. There wasn’t a predominance of IgG or IgM involvement. The hematological and clinical changes in dogs with IMHA included macrocytic, hypochromic regenerative anemia, and reticulocytosis, as well as icterus, fever, auto-agglutination, hyperglobulinemia and bilirubinuria. 9.8% of dogs with IMHA had spherocytosis, 29.5% leukocytosis, 39.6% neutrophilia and 72.1% thrombocytopenia. Proteinuria and the increase in urine protein creatinine ratio reveal evidences of renal injury. There were statistical differences between the control group and anemic dogs positive or negative for IHMA to the following tests: platelet count, PT, APTT, AT, FDP and D-dimer. 25 positive dogs and seven negative dogs for IMHA were in a thromboembolic state. These hemostatic changes observed in both groups of anemic dogs may be attributed to the predominant underlying cause of anemia, since 74.6% of IHMA cases were attributed to infectious diseases; mostly Ehrlichia sp related

Abstract: Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is the most prevalent immune disorder in dogs. This condition is characterized as a type II hypersensitivity and leads to the premature destruction of red blood cells. Among the main complications, hypercoagulability, which predisposes dogs to disseminated intravascular coagulation and pulmonary thromboembolism, is the most important and leading cause of death in more than 80% of cases. Primary IMHA cannot be associated with an obvious predisposition, besides breed predilection, because of this it is a diagnostic exclusion. Secondary IMHA is related to several agents, and among the infectious ones, ehrlichiosis stands out. Animal selection for this study was based on hematological, biochemical, and urine tests. Dogs with moderate to severe anemia (hematocrit ≤ 25%), with symptoms of immune-mediated hemolysis, such as spherocytosis, positive saline agglutination, bilirubinuria and/or hemoglobinuria, were included. The treatment is directed towards immune response suppression, for which glucocorticoids and mycophenolate mofetil are frequently used. This study aimed to clarify whether the thrombotic risk changes after the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy with mycophenolate mofetil, through thromboelastometry, in animals with primary IMHA and secondary to E. canis infection. The animals under study were submitted to hemogram, reticulocyte count, spherocytosis screening, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, urinary protein/creatinine ratio... Abstract:
The popularization of academic spaces that combine Buddhist philosophy with the literature of the Romantic period – a discipline I refer to as Buddhist Romantic Studies – have exposed the lack of scholarly attention Samuel Taylor Coleridge and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner have received within such studies. Validating Coleridge’s right to exist within Buddhist Romantic spheres, my thesis argues that Coleridge was cognizant of Buddhism through historical and textual encounters. To create a space for The Rime within Buddhist Romantic Studies, my thesis provides an interpretation of the poem that centers on the concept of prajna, or wisdom, as a vital tool for cultivating the mind. Focusing on prajna, I argue that the Mariner’s didactic story traces his cognitive voyage from ignorance to enlightenment. By examining The Rime within the framework of Buddhism, readers will also be able to grasp the importance of cultivating the mind and transcending ignorance.

Abstract:
Marine pollution is currently a major and pressing issue, as the world strives to reduce the associated risks and to develop effective and appropriate solutions. Moreover, oil pollution is a major and hazardous source of pollution in the waters of the Arabian Gulf. It is an indisputable fact that the marine environment of the region has suffered greatly since the export of oil began, as a result of the multiple harmful activities associated with that trade, such as the loading of oil, the emptying of contaminated ballast tanks, the various exploration, prospecting and manufacturing processes, in addition to oil pollution incidents resulting from collisions between ships or from fires and explosions that affect ships and marine oil installations. Further environmental damage has been caused by deliberate attacks related to armed conflict in the region during the past few years.

Abstract:
The current trend of global violence and their impact on families and communities as well as the field of university education is scary for a society that is struggling with this false sense of apathy and complacency. How did the ordinary people get seduced to the idea that there is no way out of this global assault? How then do we extricate ourselves from this “tortured consciousness” (Asante, 2007) and this false sense of “nihilism” (West, 1994) and recoup this “incommensurable loss” (Simmons, 2010) to global violence? Even more crucial, where is the place of education in retrieving this incommensurable loss while providing hope and possibility for a better future? Provoked by the desire to have answers to these questions, the dissertation relies on the knowledge and experiences of twenty qualitatively selected university activists and existing literature to critically examine the non-violent praxes of Gandhi and King, Jr. and their pedagogical implications for transformative university education. The dissertation further draws on the knowledge of Frantz Fanon and Malcolm X to bring complex and nuanced readings to violence and non-violence. The dissertation notes that violence and non-violence are not mutually exclusive as already known. The dissertation also notes that while resistive violence may be justified, it does not necessarily guarantee true transformation, reconciliation, and healing. Instead, love, humility, truth, dialogue, non-violent direct action, discipline, and spirituality are salient in achieving true transformation in university activism. The dissertation further observes that educational activism is more than walking on the street with placards to protest against institutional violence. Sometimes, the secret activism that is done strategically within the corridors of power can achieve more far-reaching results than the open protest against power on the street. The dissertation concludes with six key non-violent strategies that can help in social and political mobilization of university students for transformative university education.

Because of the background of his native nature and many years of study experience in France, his works possess genuine innovations with the compatible spirit and gathering each other together, such as the musical materials from Taiwan, China, and the West, either from the ancient and the modern times. In a view of panoramic composition technique, he creates unique musical languages by personal experiments. Finished in 2003,《Caprices of Tamsui Suite》is listed as one of his best guitar works. 《Caprices of Tamsui Suite》, a program music, contains eight different titles of movements which are with strong characteristics of musical painting. This work is derived from composer’s experiences of life scenes, he transformed each inmost scene into beautiful musical notes, as same as the French composer Claude Debussy(1862-1918) inverted the prevailing musical-painting analogy and identified his music with the Impressionistic painting of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). This study consists of five parts. The first is the composer’s biography and the work’s compositional background. The second deals with musical styles of the composition and characteristics of the musical painting. The third part aims at musical analysis of each movement including form, chord progression, rhythm, melody and figure. Explanations of special performing techniques and suggestions of difficult fingerings are provided in the fourth part. The fifth part is an addendum including composer’s portfolio, some words about these pieces from composer, interview excerpt with composer, and corrigenda for published scores. Under the research in various facets, the author hopes it will benefit the performers a comprehensive and a profound understanding towards this representative work of Taiwan guitar music.

Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to determine the impacts of Appropriate Housing Improvement Products (AHITs) on poverty alleviation and environmental conservation with special reference to the housing improvement technologies/techniques developed and introduced by the Building and Construction Improvement Program (BACIP) of the Aga Khan Planning and Building Service, Pakistan (AKPBSP) in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. A general methodology was employed in this research based on exploratory and evaluative investigation using both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected through a series of open ended interview questionnaires. The use of open ended questionnaires enabled the researcher to collect both quantitative as well as qualitative data from the interview questionnaires. Some additional qualitative data was collected through focus group discussions. The secondary data was collected from various published and unpublished reports and also from the internet. The paper begins with an introduction about the context and the program. The literature review identifies some basic concepts and approaches to poverty, and appropriate technologies, followed by the methodology that was adopted for the study. Chapter four presents the environmental setting of the study area that provides a context for analysis and chapter five present an assessment of the AHITS, with an emphasis on its role in alleviating poverty and environmental conservation in the study area, mostly through the lens of quantitative and qualitative research. Finally, the findings of the study are presented. In conclusion, recommendations are made to upgrade the effectiveness and efficiency of AHITs and to expand the impacts of the program outside its source of origin, covering a larger geographic area. In this way not only the people of the Northern Areas of Pakistan will be able to alleviate poverty in the region but people living in other regions having similar socio-economic and environmental conditions will also be able to reduce their unwanted expenses caused by poor housing conditions.

Abstract:
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), is one of the most common causes of hemolysis in dogs, and is associated with a high mortality rate. Most of the fatalities occur in the first two weeks of treatment, mainly related with thromboembolic complications. The role of glucocorticoids is established as being one of the most effective therapies and there is enough evidence documenting the positive association between these drugs and survival rates. Several protocols of association of other immunosuppressive drugs and glucocorticoids have been described, mainly in cases with poor prognosis at presentation or with poor response to glucocorticoid therapy. The results obtained in these studies, regarding survival rate and effectiveness, have been difficult to compare, due to the reduced size of the population in study, heterogenicity of the populations, lack of standardized protocols and lack of long term follow-up. New immunomodulatory drugs have been studied as adjuvant therapy for this disease but despite promising results, have failed to improve mortality rates. The main limitations to the current use of these drugs is related with their high cost and lack of availability. The aim of this study is to make a revision of the current literature about the therapeutic approach to this disease beginning with a brief introduction about the fundamental aspects.
