Hall, Lauren. "Relationality, hybridity, awareness : being with AIBO." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31618.

Abstract:
I have been exploring relationships with technologies and the robotic dog AIBO for over a year. A documentation of my experiences culminated in my AIBO Research Journal, which is an outcome of autoethnographic methodology. For a portion of the year, I worked with five participants who observed and recorded their interactions with technologies and AIBO. My own developing relationship with AIBO and observations prompted questions about potential curriculum design. Other research has shown that many people give animalized and anthropomorphized robots greater moral standing than other technologies. I asked whether the cyborgenic qualities of AIBO, in that it is dog and machine-like, could stimulate perceptions of raised moral standing, not only towards the robot, but towards other technologies as well. My concern arises out of the need for humans to become aware of their relationships with technologies and the effects of these relationships on ourselves, others, and environments. I used design-based research methodology to construct an environment in which participants engaged with technologies and AIBO and used phenomenological reflection to observe effects of the interactions. These observations were collected in journals, audio and video recordings, and interviews. With this data and a range of other sources, an ethnographic picture was generated that gives a sense of the ways people interact with technologies and AIBO. My research offers an account of human-technology and human-robot relationships, but also tests curriculum design that emphasizes awareness of ourselves, nonhuman animals, and environments. Donna Haraway and Bruno Latour, among others, emphasize a view of relations that promotes thoughtful ways of understanding relationality, otherness, and being. Theories on hybridity, cyborgs, and companion species are major guides for this work. I found that people have many different ways of relating with technologies and AIBO, which suggests the ambiguity and interconnectedness of human-technology and human-robot relationships.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the proposition of cancerous tumor segmentation strategies in a multimodal and multitemporal context. Multimodal scope refers to coupling PET/CT data in order to jointly exploit both information sources with the purpose of improving segmentation performance. Multitemporal scope refers to the use of images acquired at different dates, which limits a possible spatial correspondence between them.In a first method, a tree is used to process and extract information dedicated to feed a random walker segmentation. A set of region-based attributes is used to characterize tree nodes, filter the tree and then project data into the image space for building a vectorial image. A random walker guided by vectorial tree data on image lattice is used to label voxels for segmentation. The second method is geared toward multitemporality problem by changing voxel-to-voxel for node-to-node paradigm. A tree structure is thus applied to model two hierarchical graphs from PET and contrast-enhanced CT, respectively, and compare attribute distances between their nodes to match those assumed similar whereas discarding the others. In a third method, namely an extension of the first one, the tree is directly involved as the data-structure for algorithm application. A tree structure is built on the PET image, and CT data is then projected onto the tree as contextual information. A node stability algorithm is applied to detect and prune unstable attribute nodes. PET-based seeds are projected into the tree to assign node seed labels (tumor and background) and propagate them by hierarchy. The uncertain nodes, with region-based attributes as descriptors, are involved in a vectorial random walker method to complete tree labeling and build the segmentation

Abstract:

Understanding Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) influence is essential for the discipline of nursing. There are approximately 5000 CNEs in the United States, all are tasked with being the primary identifiable leader representing organizations in which they are employed and the nursing profession of which they are a part. In this capacity, the CNE is the gatekeeper for the advancement of the majority of the 2.4 million nurses practicing in the U.S. Literature suggests that early CNEs lacked influence and often were not recognized members of organizational executive teams. Today, after two decades of struggle, CNEs are identified as essential executive team members. However, they still self identify as being less influential than their C-suite counterparts, leaving us to question, "Having gotten to the table, now what?" This study was designed as an initial step toward answering this question through Validation of the Adams Influence Model (AIM). The AIM is a framework that can be used to understand the influence of the CNE in the acute care setting. The study exposed the AIM to a qualitative data set collected as part of an academic medical center's Survey of the Professional Practice Environment. Directed content analysis was used to categorize survey responses and identify influence content toward validation and refinement of the AIM's operational definitions. Study results validated AIM influence factors and influence attributes with some refinement. In addition to development of a refined AIM, study findings also helped identify continued research opportunities. These research potentials included the exploration of; influence instrument development, the influence process, differences between influence and power, and the relationship between CNE influence, practice/ work environments and patient outcomes. As a discipline, nursing must continue to understand the influence of the CNE. These individuals are leading the profession, at what pace and in what direction cannot be left to chance

Abstract:
Since 1987 Uddcomb Engineering has repaired pulps by their own developed overlay welding method even called Uddcomb method. Currently each welding machine is operated by two persons. To increase Uddcomb Engineering competitiveness the reduced number of operators is desired. An installation of a monitoring system which can aid humans in the welding quality control also helps to improve company’s position. A future goal would be to make this monitoring system automatic without a human operator in the loop. In this thesis, arc voltage, weld current and audio signals were collected and analyzed with aim on finding algorithms to monitor the quality of the welding process. The use of statistics tools is the basis for detecting variations in the voltage and current data, associated with welding process. It has been shown that voltage signal can be used as a part of the welding quality control. The audio signal from welding at low frequencies varies with the speed of the process. The signal can also be incorporated in the monitoring of the process. The use of filters, growing sums and statistics are key elements in the algorithms presented in this report.

Abstract:
In the last few years the World Wide Web has dramatically changed the way people are communicating with each other. The growing availability of Social Media Systems like Internet fora, weblogs and social networks ensure that the Internet is today, what it was originally designed for: A technical platform in which all users are able to interact with each other. Nowadays, there are billions of user comments available discussing all aspects of life and the data source is still growing. This thesis investigates, whether it is possible to use this growing amount of freely provided user comments to extract quality related information. The concept is based on the observation that customers are not only posting marketing relevant information. They also publish product oriented content including positive and negative experiences. It is assumed that this information represents a valuable data source for quality analyses: The original voices of the customers promise to specify a more exact and more concrete definition of \"quality\" than the one that is available to manufacturers or market researchers today. However, the huge amount of unstructured user comments makes their evaluation very complex. It is impossible for an analysis protagonist to manually investigate the provided customer feedback. Therefore, Social Media specific algorithms have to be developed to collect, pre-process and finally analyze the data. This has been done by the Social Media monitoring system AIM (Automotive Internet Mining) that is the subject of this thesis. It investigates how manufacturers, products, product features and related opinions are discussed in order to estimate the overall product quality from the customers\\\' point of view. AIM is able to track different types of data sources using a flexible multi-agent based crawler architecture. In contrast to classical web crawlers, the multi-agent based crawler supports individual crawling policies to minimize the download of irrelevant web pages. In addition, an unsupervised wrapper induction algorithm is introduced to automatically generate content extraction parameters which are specific for the crawled Social Media systems. The extracted user comments are analyzed by different content analysis algorithms to gain a deeper insight into the discussed topics and opinions. Hereby, three different topic types are supported depending on the analysis needs. * The creation of highly reliable analysis results is realized by using a special context-aware taxonomy-based classification system. * Fast ad-hoc analyses are applied on top of classical fulltext search capabilities. * Finally, AIM supports the detection of blind-spots by using a new fuzzified hierarchical clustering algorithm. It generates topical clusters while supporting multiple topics within each user comment. All three topic types are treated in a unified way to enable an analysis protagonist to apply all methods simultaneously and in exchange. The systematically processed user comments are visualized within an easy and flexible interactive analysis frontend. Special abstraction techniques support the investigation of thousands of user comments with minimal time efforts. Hereby, specifically created indices show the relevancy and customer satisfaction of a given topic

This project has been carried out in cooperation with Mälarplast, a manufacturer of plasticproducts, and Avalon Innovation, an engineering consultant firm focusing on product development. The first objective was to develop a flexible storage solution for inflight and railwaycatering, using Avalon’s new development process Avalon Innovation Model (AIM). Mälarplasthad realized a need for a product which they could produce as one solution which couldbe configured to divide their drawers, used by airline and railway caterers, into pockets ofdifferent sizes. The second objective was to evaluate and analyze how well AIM worked as aproduct development tool and process as well as a service product. With the intention ofproviding recommendations for improvements for further development of the model, both interms of a service product and as product development process.Proceeding according to AIM, user studies at caterers, during service on a train and at an airlineutility department were performed. User needs identified during these studies wereranked with the help of users, buyers, sellers and manufacturers of these kinds of products. Two main problems were found, these were: flexibility in terms of pocket sizes and a need tokeep food at an even temperature during transport. The final concept was for a flexible plasticinlay that creates pockets in the specified drawer. It was optimized to hold the most commonglass sizes reported by contacted airlines.AIM was analyzed through interviews and discussions with key personnel and practitioners ofAIM at Avalon. Theoretical studies through scientific articles and other literature resources aswell as impressions from the project mentioned above were also used. The result showed thatAIM was not well described in terms of when and where the specified development toolsshould be used as well as how. Further, a lack of functional integration of teams and customersin AIM was found, which could make the process less than optimal in terms of efficiencyand innovation success. Recommendations offered including improvements of the process’slayout and strategy in terms of handling iterations of product concepts and ideas, by makingthe process more agile and flexible. Also a better separation between AIM the product andAIM the process is recommended in order to improve the focus of the offer to customers aswell as the information given to developers.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is largely to consider the de Stoicorum repugnantiis in sympathetic terms as part of Plutarch's wider philosophical output. It argues that Plutarch's approach in the work could not be that of a negative Sceptic, since Plutarch held his own positive beliefs (a form of Platonism) and, although he draws heavily on the arguments of the Sceptical Academy, he saw Scepticism itself as a positive tool. Section II of the thesis traces the history of the polemical motif of self-contradiction, which turns out to be based on a specific argument used by the Academy against Stoic ethics. Plutarch adopts this argument as it stands and uses it extensively; but he also identifies the Stoic inconsistencies he uncovers as symptomatic of the Stoics' doctrinal diversion from Plato, and on this basis he sets out to show that when the Stoics diverge from Plato in any area of doctrine (logical or physical as well as ethical) they likewise fall into self-contradiction. If it is right to think that Plutarch has not chosen his arguments randomly, it becomes increasingly unlikely that he has presented them randomly. So section III considers the idea that Plutarch might have organised his arguments following a standard Academic pattern. Section IV presents a study of each of Plutarch's arguments in the de Stoic, rep. not only to confirm his Platonising interests, but also to demonstrate that the contradictions fall into 'sections', each of which deals with topics drawn from a common area in standard Academic polemic. Section V considers the conclusions that can be drawn from the themes that underlie each section: in fact, it happens that a structure emerges which presupposes a distinctive outlook within Academic literature, and so suggests that Plutarch has made use of a particular work to guide his process of composition.

Abstract:

Altered expression or modification of these cofactors might result in gene expression changes, provoke alterations in cell cycle and lead to several pathologies, including cancer. Therefore, it is essential that amount and function of these molecules are highly regulated. Amplified in breast cancer (AIB1), a member of the steroid receptor coactivator family, is a transcriptional coactivator, not only for nuclear receptors but also for several transcription factors. Compelling evidences reveal AIB1 as a clear oncogen. AIB1 amplification and/or its overexpression occur in many human tumors. Experiments in rodents have demonstrated that AIB1 alone is sufficient to initiate tumorigenesis. However, AIB1 deficiency protects from tumors. The mechanisms of AIB1 to promote cancer initiation, progression, and endocrine resistance involve a variety of signaling pathways. Regulation of cell proliferation, survival and migration through these pathways suggest a central role of AIB1 in tumorigenesis. Although great progress has been made to understand the structure and function of AIB1, the mechanisms which lead to its overexpression are still unknown. A few studies have suggested that increased levels of AIB1 in cancer might be attributable to both transcriptional activation and post-translational stabilization. However, protein stabilization represents another important mechanism. In this work, factors involved in stability regulation, degradation and activity of AIB1 have been studied. Nuclear localization correlates with lower AIB1 half-life and facilitates its degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome system. PI3K/AKT signaling pathway inhibition results in higher instability for AIB1. However, deletion of the AIB1 PEST motif leads to greater protein stability. A novel mitotic-specific phosphorylation of AIB1 has been identified. Cdk1-cyclin B1 phosphorylates AIB1, and this modification is reverted during mitosis exit by a phosphatase sensitive to okadaic acid and calyculin A. AIB1 mitotic-phosphorylation seems to affect its subcellular distribution and its coactivation activity. Data presented in this work are essential for the comprehension of aspects linked to AIB1 levels and activity. Nonetheless, more research is required for determining the exact mechanisms by which AIB1 promotes tumorigenesis and for establishing AIB1 as a tumoral marker as well as a therapeutic target in cancer.

Abstract:

The background to this paper is that that many new founded companies have a problem to achieve such a growth rate that they manage to stay alive their first five years. Only a few of the new started company is able to achieve a rapid growth rate in their early lives. Why is this? And can a vision be the answer? The answer to this is yes, a vision can be the answer. But how shall the vision be implemented in the organization in order to work? With this back ground a question were formulated:

“How do small, high growth companies work with their vision?”

The study is a case study of a small company in Sweden; company Alpha, who has had a growth rate of over 100 percent per year over the last six years. The company was chosen because of its size and its almost unique way of achieving a high growth rate.

From several theoretical references a model were created. This model focuses on four different dimensions that are important in order to work and use a vision within a company. These four aspects were; vision development, vision articulation, and vision communication and vision implementation.

The conclusion of the paper is that rapid growth companies work with visions as a tool to attract personal, and stakeholders. They also work with it in a way that the vision becomes a management tool, used for controlling and showing the direction to the employees, making their work, and decision-taking easier. This is a way to make the employees more secure in both their own actions and what to expect of the company. The paper also shows that companies’ works with smaller visions, department visions, in order to easier implement the vision in the day-to-day work.

The confrontation between antagonistic militant groups is a phenomenon present in several moments of Brazilian political history, especially in the republican period. Due to different contexts, it can also be understood that different reasons can determine the origin of each of these conflicts. The first of these greats clashes occurred between members of the Ação Integralista Brasileira (AIB) and the Aliança Nacional Libertadora (ANL) in 1935. There were several clashes, involving many militants, registered in different parts of the country. It consider, however, that although there had common causes that motivated the opposition between the groups throughout the national territory, there were also local factors, which differentiated the characteristics of this confrontation according to the scenario in which it developed. Based on this hypothesis, this research takes as object the events related to the AIB-ANL confrontation in the city of Petrópolis (RJ). It was, simultaneously, an important pole for integralist militancy and also an important center for the ANL's activities. It is considered here that both the mobilization and the actions of the militants were in some way quite different from the forms of confrontation observed in other parts of the country, especially regarding the general strike that followed the death of a ANL militant.

Mortazian, Mona. "How do listing requirements impact firms : the case of AIM." Thesis, Brunel University, 2016. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/13612.

Full text
Abstract:
The restrictive listing requirements imposed by the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange results in the listing of high quality companies, while at the same time provides a higher degree of investor protection. These requirements can however be an obstacle for small and growing companies to go public and raise capital. Thus AIM has developed in order to facilitate the growth of these companies by its lighter listing requirements. This thesis is focused on three outcomes of the lighter listing requirements of AIM. First, AIM companies have a high ownership concentration and lower investor protection, thus enabling blockholders to have a significant impact on their value. This thesis finds that non-managerial and managerial blockholders have quadratic and cubic relationships with firm value respectively. Also, both types of blockholder increase the value of the firm until the first break point which is approximately 30 percent. This is almost exactly the point that the LSE defines as a cut-off point at which the blockholder is regarded as a controlling shareholder. Second, companies moving from the Main market to the AIM impair their information environment when entering the AIM; the information environment is measured by the stock’s liquidity and volatility. This thesis finds that firms experience lower trading activity and lower trading volume, which results in lower liquidity and volatility than matched companies that remain in the Main Market. Third, IPOs listing in the AIM are underpriced in order to compensate for risk. However, the level of underpricing can be alleviated by appointing a reputable Nomad. Underpricing facilitates IPOs to achieve higher aftermarket liquidity in two ways: First, directly by attracting investor attention; and second by diversifying ownership. However, aftermarket liquidity is evident for a longer period than other markets because of a longer lock up period.

Abstract:

"Screening of susceptibility to type 2 diabetes: DOR and AIB3"

To determine the role of DOR and AIB3 genes in type 2 diabetis or obesity, two genetic association studies were designed. To perform these studies, DNA samples from normoglucemic individuals and type 2 diabetic subjects were collected.

Different SNPs (15) localized on the genes were selected, and following the guidelines published in specialized bibliography, 6 haplotype tagging SNPs (htSNPs) were selected to perform the association studies.Es van seleccionar diferents SNPs (un total de 15). 542 control subjects, and 655 diabetic subjects were genotyped for each polymorphism.

The results of this study showed weak associations of two polymorphisms located on the AIB3 gene and BMI (p=0.021 y p=0.031). laso, some correlations with clinical data were observed within the control group.

The results suggest a putative role of these genes in the pathology of type 2 diabetis and obesity. Following the genetic results some functional studies were done. First, the generation of a KO mouse for the DOR gene was started; and second, the expression of the genes DOR and AIB3 was evaluated in samples from control subjects and diabetic ones, and indeed in different animal models of pathology. The findings in these studies showed an strong regulation of the expression of the genes under some circumstances.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis investigates the incentives that affect the decisions of firms to undertake R&D investment and examining the impact of financial constraints on the levels of R&D expenditure of AIM-listed firms in the UK. The thesis comprises six chapters. The first chapter provides an introduction to the research, followed by an overview of the Alternative Investment Market in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 investigates the incentives that influence a firm’s decision to carry out R&D investment. The key empirical findings from a dynamic logistic regression suggest that large sized firms are better at generating innovative activities, that young firms tend to be more likely to innovate, that competitive markets are better at stimulating innovative activities, and that corporate income tax rates have a positive impact on this probability. Chapter 4 explores the impact of financing constraints on the levels of R&D expenditure. Using a system GMM estimator, the empirical findings suggest that working capital buffers R&D levels from transitory financial shocks, thus avoiding the high adjustments costs associated with any change in levels of R&D investment. Chapter 5 investigates the impact of the proceeds from the disposal of fixed assets on R&D expenditure. In contrast to prior literature, the main findings of this chapter suggest that there is a negative association between R&D expenditure and the cash raised from voluntary asset sales, indicating severe binding financing constraints. Practical implementations, promising ideas for future research, and the main findings of this research are summarized in the concluding chapter of the thesis.

Abstract : The theme of this work is the Brazilian Integralist Action (Ação Integralista Brasileira - AIB), a movement and consolidated party in Brazil between 1932 and 1938, when then it is deemed illegal and has its last attempts to seize power during the already established New State (Estado Novo). The research object covers the performance of the integralismo in western Paraná, at the largest city in territorial aspect of the time, Guarapuava/ PR, with borders from the Midwest, where nowadays it is located, to the Northwest of the State. In this region, the movement undertook its policy of expansion and formed the core in Guarapuava in February 1935. Thus, the research period comprises from its foundation in 1935 to its dismantling in 1938. On this account, with a fascist program added mainly the middle classes in opposition to the program carried out by the oligarchies, with federalist policy and the practices of rule of the colonels (coronelismo). Thus, the purpose of this study is to understand the Brazilian Integralist Action and explain the political conflicts between integralistas and oligarchies caused by the struggle for regional power and aggravated by the establishment of the New State. The apex of this conflict happens with the murder of the integralismo founder and chief in the region in January, 1938 and later, with the attempted to takeover, Intentona Verde, in March, 1938. The study is justified for bringing the debate on the fascist phenomenon, so recurring presently, and also for elucidating questions on the political conflicts between local leaderships and the relevance of the rule of the colonels as political practice in this region, through the investigative assumptions of social history. Accordingly, the research provides preliminary conclusions regarding the emergence of fascist phenomena and how this attempt to discipline the class struggle in order to develop the Brazilian nation, through its land productive reality, causing conflicts with the oligarchies in Guarapuava.

Abstract:
An airport node-link network model is an important input for most airport simulation models. Developing, maintaining and updating detailed airport surface node-link models require significant work. A model to convert airport geographic and geometric information into a node-link network is thus needed. In this thesis, an efficient model to automate the procedure of converting airport geographic and geometric information into a node-link network is proposed. The geographic and geometric information are obtained from the Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM). The node-link network is generated by converting the geographic and geometric information contained into the AIXM files using coincident geometry management and polygon representation development. Finally, using the airport node-link network generation model, a standalone computer application, called Taxiway Toolkit, is developed to improve the Airfield Delay Simulation Model (ADSIM+).

Abstract:
Karl Barth's historic rejection of philosophy in the service of theology is one of the seminal events in twentieth century theology. As a result of his divorce of philosophy from theology, Karl Barth's work is seldom appreciated as philosophically interesting or valuable. Yet, it is our contention that Karl Barth, far from pursuing theology apart from the benefit of philosophy, is in fact executing a philosophical, i.e., a grammatical approach to theology. It is clear that Barth shares certain affinities with analytic philosophy. It is also clear, as we show, that Barth's theology shares a striking commensurability with the later work of Wittgenstein. As such we show how comparisons of Barth's work with Wittgenstein and other Wittgensteinian philosophers display the grammatical aim and character of his theological interests. We show that Barth's treatment of the question of God's existence and the problem of significant reference are commensurate with the aims and character of grammatical philosophy. We also meet objections which are often levelled against Barth that would mitigate the strength of our contention, namely that Barth is a fideist or a realist. Finally, we return to the notion of God's hiddenness to underscore the grammatical nature of Karl Barth's theology.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The European Parliament Buildings Directive (EPBD) obliges Sweden to develop plans to enhance the amount of NZEB. Define what NZEB for them exactly constitutes - technical definitions and system boundaries for energy performance calculations. The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning in Sweden has received an assignment from the Swedish government to propose the definition and quantitative approach on energy requirements for NZEB. NBHBP suggest the system boundary should be the delivered (bought) energy. The delivered energy divide into two different energy form. The set system boundary to calculate the specific energy performance with the introduced weighted factor. Makes it possible to compensate the specific energy performance by using renewable energy generators on site. The risk is inefficient buildings can use renewable energy technologies on site to compensate the delivered energy to achieve the 80 kWh/m2, year (the proposed energy requirements for NZEB). This results to high energy cost along with large investments in renewable technologies on site, or the need to add fossil fuels to make up the high-energy demand. The both reference houses Circuitus and Bright Living are NZEB, per the Swedish definition proposal of NZEB from NBHBP. The most significant difference is Circuitus has better heat exchanger and building envelope than Bright Living.
