Full textThe more generalized use of wood for building raises concern for fire safety. The current standards require the structure stability for a minimum time to ensure the building evacuation and the fire fight. Considering that the fire endurance of wood is well-known, the stability requirement is mainly reduced to the understanding of the behaviour of wood joints on fire. The aim of this work is to study the behaviour of single-dowel timber joints and it is divided into three parts. The first part is a study of the influence of temperature on the modulus of elasticity and on the embedding strength in a range between 20 and 300 °C. In the second part the wood charring and the influence of a metallic dowel embedded in wood, is studied. In the third part, the fire behaviour of single-dowel wood joints is tackled. The first two studies have provided mechanical and thermal data to allow the development of a model to simulate the joint behaviour and its fire endurance before fracture

Full textThe objective of this research was to study the influence of the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) and temperature on the mechanical properties of black spruce wood (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.). The six specimen technique was used to determine the elastic parameters under eight hygrothermal conditions: four EMC (7%, 13%, 17% and above the fiber saturation point) at two temperatures (30°C and 50°C). Measurements were made in axial compression tests. Axial strain was measured using a Sangamo DG1.0 linear displacement sensor (LVDT). Transverse strain was measured using two semi-ring extensometers. The results show than wood deformability increases as EMC and temperature increase. Furthermore, at the given EMC, wood deformability increases as temperature increases from 30°C to 50°C.

Full textThe understory herbaceous species are little studied in the context of climate change. The B4WARMED experiment, a forest warming facility of the University of Minnesota, provided the opportunity to study the response of Maianthemum canadense and Eurybia macrophylla in interaction with other components of their ecosystem. Effects on their growth, reproduction, phenology, photosynthesis and respiration rates were evaluated, along with the effects on the availability of light, water and nutrients. Overall, these two species were modestly affected by the experimental global warming treatments. However, their emergence in early spring promoted their reproductive output while reduced water content of the soil seemed to have negative effects in the longer term. The future of these species under a warming scenario depends, among other things, on the response of the upper strata in terms of phenology and on the changes in precipitation patterns.
