This study presents etymological deciphering using ancient Japanese ways of reading ancient Chinese scripts of the names for the five types of stringed instruments, known as komuz, tatonpa, sugut, tambur, and tonkori. Based on the phonetic variants of the term komuz written in Roman and Russian alphabets and Chinese scripts, two hypothetical forms *qonbulrsukie and *qonbulrsir were reconstructed: qon ‘sheep’, bulr ‘tendon’, sukie ‘string’, sir ‘string’. As to the form tatonpa, the ancient form *siudonbule {siu ‘boar’ + don ‘gut’ + bule ‘tendon-fiber’} was revealed. The hypothetical form *siugu

The article regards children’s literature as a certain cultural tool. This approach enables to reveal various characteristic aspects of the poetics of children’s literature, while relating them to children’s cognitive and cultural development. Focusing on a book series Paula’s Life by Estonian author Aino Pervik, it can be seen how two different ways of understanding — the initial, so-called mythological type of thinking of preschoolers and the emerging conceptual thinking — are combined. It is also well known as a blockchain platform for creating and launching its own cryptocurrency. The applications run on Ethereum executed by a platform-specific cryptographic token, ether. During 2014, Ethereum had launched a pre-sale for ether, which had received an overwhelming response. Ether is used broadly for two purposes: it is traded as a digital currency exchange like other cryptocurrencies, and it is used inside Ethereum to run applications and even to monetize work. Cyberattacks (CAs) on modern interconnected power systems are currently a primary concern. The development of information and communication technology (ICT) has increased the possibility of unauthorized access to power system networks for data manipulation. Unauthorized data manipulation may lead to the partial or complete shutdown of a power network. In this paper, we propose a novel security unit that mitigates intrusion for an interconnected power system and compensates for data manipulation to augment cybersecurity. Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In Greenberg (1987: 332) a linguistic stock named Eurasiatic is outlined with the following membership: 1. Inda-European; 2. Uralic-Yukaghir; 3. Altaic (Turkic, Mongolian, Tungusic); 4. Korean; 5. Japanese; 6. Ainu; 7. Gilyak; 8. Chukotian; 9. Eskaleut. Of these, 4-6, i.e. Korean, Japanese, and Ainu are stated as probably forming a subgroup. Since then in Greenberg (1990a, 1990b, and 1991), a series of Eurasiatic grammatical markers has been pro-posed. In addition Greenberg (1992) contains an extensive exposition of sixty-three grammatical items, which is intended as a preliminary version of one of the chapters of Greenberg (to appear) [Greenberg 2000-Ed.], which will present detailed evidence for this family.

Abstract:
This chapter chronicles the history of Hirosaki domain to late-Tokugawa times, charting rule by the Tsugaru clan and developments in the local politics, economy, society, and military defense of Ezo, which was inhabited by the Indigenous Ainu. Hirosaki domain represents a fascinating case of a “country” that underwent transformation within an evolving Japanese state. In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the Tsugaru family asserted its dominance over its conquered territory on the northeastern edge of Japan's main island. They ingratiated themselves with the rulers of Japan by forming political alliances. The chapter also follows the story of how two merchant-class scholars navigated history: Hirao Rosen established himself as a painter and ethnographic researcher, and Tsuruya Ariyo made his name as a poet in local literati circles. The chapter traces how these young men learned from notable teachers, while yearning for the advanced scholarship of Edo. Through their artistic and scholarly works, Rosen and Ariyo expressed visions of their local “country” of Tsugaru embedded in a larger Japan.

Abstract:
A platform-independent Java Web application named TSI (Teacher-Student Interaction) that supports communication between an instructor, teaching assistants and students in a traditional on-campus course is presented in this chapter. Using the TSI, the instructor and teaching assistants can handle most of the routine work: upload student personal information, send students personal emails, etc. The system can easily be installed and administered individually by an instructor inexperienced in computers. It is as simple as a pen for students. Students can check their personal data (scores and comments), download educational materials, etc. As part of the TSI, a VBA application is used to analyze the course log files. This tool is helpful in understanding individual and group students’ behaviors. The TSI was successfully tested during six years at the University of Aizu (Japan) in an environment where English is one of the working languages and both students and professors are non-native speakers of English.

Full text
Abstract:
Scottish singer Jean Redpath first made her name in the folk music revival sweeping 1960s America. In her clear and expressive mezzo-soprano, she brought her own Scottish folk-song repertoire, at the heart of which was the works of Robert Burns. Jean's career would be spent living and working between the USA and Scotland, continually adding through her own research and teaching to the range of Burns materials she recorded and performed on both sides of the Atlantic. Following her death in 2014, her extensive archives were bequeathed to the University of Glasgow’s Centre for Robert Burns Studies and the University of South Carolina’s Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections Drawing on Burns-related content of those archives, this chapter explores Jean’s relationship with the bard – the breadth and depth of her work – to understand better the nuance of his songs, the various contexts within which she recorded those songs including a project conceived with Serge Hovey to record Burns’s entire catalogue, and the impact of her career on the placement of Burns as a central figure in both national and international folk song traditions.
