Abstract:

Donatelli, David J. "Evolution of US air cargo productivity." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/78145.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Transportation)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2012.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 131).
This thesis provides an overview of the US air cargo industry since airline deregulation in 1978, including a brief overview of the historical evolution of air cargo transport in the US from the early 1900s until the late 1970s and a discussion about the major international factors affecting global air cargo. A deeper analysis of the US air cargo industry follows these background discussions, emphasizing the growth of all-cargo carrier traffic in the past 30 years while noting the decline of combination carrier traffic within the past decade. Furthermore, operating cost analyses for the past 20 years reveal that major improvements in labor productivity have helped all-cargo carriers and combination carriers decrease unit costs, even while the price of fuel has risen dramatically. Productivity of US air cargo carriers is explored from 1990 to 2010 through two types of metrics, single-factor productivity (SFP) and multi-factor productivity (MFP). SFP metrics measure an airline's ability to turn inputs, such as fuel, labor, and capital, into outputs, such as available ton-miles (ATMs) and revenue ton-miles (RTMs). The MFP metric presented measures how effectively an airline produces an output from multiple inputs, essentially combining the SFP metrics. Single-factor productivity results show that the US air cargo industry has made significant improvements in labor productivity and capital productivity, with minor improvements in fuel productivity. FedEx and UPS have achieved the smallest improvements over the past 20 years, while other all-cargo carriers and combination carriers realized substantial advancements in the past two decades. Multi-factor productivity results echo the SFP results. Over the past 20 years, FedEx and UPS improved MFP 18%, combination carriers became approximately twice as productive, and the other all-cargo carriers increased MFP dramatically. However, questionable data reported by all-cargo carriers and methods used to determine only cargo-related data for combination carriers limit the accuracy of these results and caused difficulties calculating productivity throughout this thesis.

Al-Hajri, Ghanem Mohamed. "The impact of sea-air mode on air cargo transport." Thesis, Cranfield University, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/3259.

Full text
Abstract:
The following research looks into the concept of sea-air intermodality, a combination of two or more modes of transport for the carriage of goods from origin to destination. The study examines why and how this form of transport evolved to become a viable alternative to the conventional single modes of ocean and air transport. The viability of the sea-air mode depends on various equally important factors which are analysed in depth, with a special emphasis on the sea-air transfer port. fn this context, research findings of the world's existing sea-air hubs are recorded and evaluated in terms of their present and future trends. At a sea-air transfer hub, ocean cargo is converted to direct air freight, thus adding new volumes of air cargoes. In this respect, sea-air plays a positive role in the present and future development of the air freight industry. The impact of the sea-air mode can be most clearly seen in the case study analysis in Chapter 10 of this thesis, whereby the potential for 'convertibility' of large portions of low density ocean cargoes to the sea-aix mode, is successfully demonstrated.

A substantial challenge to reducing security gaps in the international air cargo supply chain is the lack of a method of evaluating existing levels of risk based upon points of origin, points of departure and cargo and aircraft type. This is particularly challenging since the current United States air cargo security protocol requires the 100 percent screening of all air cargo without objectively analyzing or evaluating the risk posed by the air cargo. This thesis proposes a risk-based intelligence driven approach to identify and mitigate the threat of the successful introduction of an improvised explosive device into the international air cargo supply chain. The primary thrust of this research effort is to conduct a comparative analysis of the United States international air cargo policies and the European Unions international air cargo policies as a means of evaluating and proposing a risk based intelligence driven international air cargo policy that capitalizes on the strengths of United States and European Unions systems.

Abstract:
In this study, we consider the Air Cargo Scheduling Problem based on a real life application. The aim is to move cargo and passengers that have different priorities and delivery time window, from a number of origin airports to destination airports by means of a transportation system. The system has predefined carrier routes and a heterogeneous fleet of aircraft. The problem is formulated as a heterogeneous vehicle, multi commodity, pick-up, and delivery network flow problem with a large set of system specific constraints. The proposed model determines set of movement requirements assigned on each route leg and number and type of aircraft assigned for each route in a reasonable amount of time. The model is tested with the real and generated data and the results are compared with the current methodology under different scenarios. The model produced better results in a short amount of time compared to the current methodology.

Abstract:
The air cargo transportation in Brazil is one of the great factors that have stimulated Brazilian´s exportations and importations. As the exportations surpassed the importations, such modality of transport had direct influence in the Brazilian trade balance for the last years. This dissertation shows the Brazilian scene of last the three years and, whenever it is pertinent, the relation with the world-wide panorama. Thus, the work starts with the world-wide situation of the air cargo with special attention to Brazil. Influence factors that they had reflected in the air cargo transportation, the cargo movement of the exportations and importations, the national and foreign airlines roles and situation in Brazil and, finally, the main Brazilian airports are subjects of this dissertation. The motivation of this work is the great result achieved for this analyzed period, regarding this transport modality. The domestic and international market is in great expansion and the coming of new freighter aircrafts models is seen with expectation for air companies, increasing, thus, the amount of tons offered kilometers, what it would guarantee the success of the cargo transportation modality.

Abstract:
In the wake of September 11th and following an overemphasis on passenger air travel security, the air cargo system potentially has become the primary target for terrorists. States have undertaken various regulatory approaches that involve technology and operational measures aimed at addressing the perceived security threats in the air cargo industry. This thesis presents both an overview of the potential risks and best security practices identified within several international, regional and national initiatives, including the "authorized economic operator" and "secure supply chain" mechanisms. The main challenge in designing an adequate security system appears to be ensuring that security improvements are in accord with the time-sensitive realities of air cargo industry and do not unduly interfere with trade flow. It is argued that only an international approach based on best available cargo security practices could adequately and efficiently address the current and emerging air cargo security vulnerabilities.

Ye, Choongyeol. "A neural network approach to air cargo fleet assignment." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2000. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7366.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the mathematical programming aspects of the air cargo fleet assignment problem for one international air cargo carrier - Korean Air - under given origin-destination (O-D) pairs, departure and arrival times, and frequencies. A pure cargo service is taken as the basis for this study, since such a service is not constrained by passenger route determinants and the schedule of a combination air carrier. The objectives of the study include: to identify the pure air cargo network representation of the combination air carriers; to develop and solve a conventional branch-and-bound mathematical programming model for optimising the assignment of aircraft to flight routes given a set of constraints, including aircraft fleet size, schedule balance, and `required through' constraints; to develop and solve the fleet assignment problem using a novel neural network optimisation modelling approach; to investigate methods of implementing the neural network model, and to analyse the performance of the model when compared with conventional solution methods; and finally to analyse the utility of the neural network model and identify how it may be used in the design and development of air cargo networks for combination air carriers like Korean Air. There are four main parts to the thesis: the first part outlines the schedule design process of an airline and some details of the fleet assignment problem are reviewed. The air cargo flight network is represented and the fleet assignment problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem of cost minimisation with various constraints. The complexity of the problem is discussed; the second part outlines the various techniques available to solve optimisation problems and neural network models are presented and discussed as a promising alternative solution method. Neural network applications in the transport field are reviewed and the neural network process for optimisation and for solving the general assignment problem are studied and presented; the third part incorporates the practical application of both the conventional fleet assignment problem solving method and the proposed neural network method to a combination airline's case - Korean Air. The detailed process of constructing a time line network and formulating a mathematical programming model are described and equivalent neural network models are formulated. The results from the two solution approaches are compared and evaluated; and the final part summarises the main findings, presents the significant conclusions, the contribution of the research is discussed and some recommendations for further research are presented. Overall, the conventional branch-and-bound optimisation model yielded plausible results which were demonstrably superior to those produced using the novel neural network optimisation models.

Abstract:
The changes in air transportation regulation implemented in the last two decades, brought both a challenge and a stimulus to the merchandise distribution systems, with a sizable increase in the transported volumes and a reduction in travelled distances. As a consequence, competition imposes more efficiency to the air companies. The cargo consolidation points in the transport network, the hub, are a definite requirement for cost reduction and optimization of their operational assets. The present research has collected data in Departamento de Aviação Civil (DAC) about the 32 Brazilian cargo airports as well as its aggregation among the five geographic regions of the country. The aggregated formulation was used as a test for a future study including all airports. The pilot application avoids the use of an optimization model but rather, using an Excel software, makes total enumeration of all alternatives to find a single hub proposal.

Abstract:
Recent developments in aeronautics have resulted in hybrid airships, a combination of aerostats and aerodynes with the ability to land without infrastructure and using minimal ground crew. This work explores the possibility of using a non rigid type of these vehicles for cargo transportation. To do so, a load carrier able to transfer the load to an allotted set of attachment points under the soft hull of the airship is needed. A short prestudy examines the limits and feasibilities of potential cargo-types and concludes there are three characteristically different problems that can be combined to represent most realistic load cases. A modular carrier system is then created with modules corresponding to each problem, and suitable dimensions are chosen by finding the relations to the resulting stresses and deflections.

Abstract:
The air cargo industry is evolving rapidly, as is its international law regime. The recent entry into force of the Montreal Protocol No. 4 and adoption of the Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air signed at Montreal on 28 May 1999 constitutes a new legal framework for air cargo claims.
Rather than offering definite answers, this thesis identifies some current and emerging issues in the law of air cargo claims, particularly those aspects that the claimant must prove. The work traces the development of the Warsaw System by writers and courts, and attempts to identify trends in the application and interpretation of the new legal framework. The evolution towards independence of the law of carriage of goods by air from other similar regimes, and the existing connections among them, are examined. When appropriate, common law and civil law solutions to some legal issues will be introduced.
Finally, the thesis concludes that conflicting decisions in this field could be avoided by adopting uniform rules to solve conflicts of laws and to interpret international carriage conventions.

Abstract:
The recent expansion of air trucking operations in Europe has put a strain on the traditional concept of air carrier's liability.
Short-haul pick-up and delivery services have gradually given way to a more complex pattern of hubbing and substitute transport by road, possibly undertaken without consent of the consignor of the goods.
In the absence of a set of international rules for multimodal transport, each segment is subject to a separate legal regime. An evolutive interpretation of the original Warsaw Convention, though, fits the newly developed bimodal operations prima facie into the sphere of air carrier's liability.
Problems of delay are dealt with using an elaborate model on the concept of time in the several branches of transport law. The spectrum is completed by a discussion on the plurality of the parties involved in the entire process.

One current trend of air transportation is that while international alliances among major airlines continue, some airline cargo alliances have formed. However, few researches have examined airline cargo alliance practices, and no research has been paid to the alliance decision analysis and airline cargo flight frequency planning issues for the airline cargo alliances. This study develops a series of models to analyze the airline cargo alliance decision-makings and determine allied flight frequencies under air cargo alliances. This study develops a fuzzy cooperative game for assessing the combination of airline cargo alliance alternatives. Under the determined airline cargo alliance condition, the integrated allied cargo flight network programming model is developed, while considering overall profitability, traffic gains, and cost reduction for the allied network in which they cooperate with their partners. A numerical case study demonstrated the synergy benefits of airline cargo alliances and the feasibility of applying the proposed models. Moreover, a group of optimal solutions for airline flight frequencies was determined. The results showed that the parallel code-shared alliance makes both sides of cargo members increased profits, reduced operating costs and also increased market shares. On the other hand, the complementary code-shared alliance makes them extending the network scope. The results of this study explored the effects of airline cargo alliances on allied routes and flight frequencies, and the allied network structure. In addition, it is envisaged that the results of this study may shed light on air cargo alliance strategies.

Air traffic demand forecasting plays the important role for developing the efficient operating strategy. This study employed supervised back-propagation neural networks to develop a simple MATLAB computer program and regression analysis in order to forecast air passenger and air cargo demand from Japan to Taiwan. All input variables were collected by literature survey, market analysis and preliminary evaluation. The factors which influence air passenger market were analyzed in detail by deleting method, adding method, and contribution graph. Employed supervised back-propagation neural networks the following 8 variables were selected as the input variables to establish the air passenger forecasting model: population in Japan, employed population in Japan, per capita income in Japan, GDP in Japan, GNP in Japan, foreign exchange rate, flight movement from Tokyo (NRT) to Taipei (TPE), per capita income in Taiwan. The novel BPN model can accurately forecast air passenger demand with an extremely low Mean Absolute Percentage Error of 0.34%. The following 10 variables were selected as the input variables to establish the air cargo forecasting model: population in Taiwan, employed population in Taiwan, per capita income in Taiwan, GDP in Taiwan, GNP in Taiwan, economic growth rate in Taiwan, import price index, listed company, gross export amount from Japan, employed population in Japan. The novel BPN model can accurately forecast air cargo demand with an extremely low Mean Absolute Percentage Error of 7.74%.The results reveal that flights from Tokyo (NRT) to Taipei (TPE), PCI in Taiwan, and foreign exchange rate are the three most important factors for air passenger volume. The economic growth rate in Taiwan, gross export amount from Japan, and GNP in Taiwan are the three most important factors for air cargo volume. Employed regression analysis the results reveal that average hotel rate in Taiwan is the important factor for air passenger volume. The economic gross export amount from Japan is the most important factor for air cargo volume. The results are not consistent with supervised back-propagation neural networks.

Since the air freight grows up sharpely, the capacity of air cargo terminalshould be increased . Cargo terminal capacity depends on the planning side (overall area , layout ,...etc.) and operating side (the process of export and import operation, data processing system and cargo handle equipment,...etc) .An improved planning procedure for an air cargo terminal must pay attention tothe dwell time which cargo spends in the terminal .The present pattern of thedwell time shows that the freight should spends on waiting and being served in such uncertain environment. Therefore the dwell time is an important criteria used to measure the performance of the air cargo transportation. However, the past studies paid less attention on the dwell time .This study would focus on the analysis of the dewell time. The dwell time variable is divided into two parts . One is the total time that the freight spends on being served , waiting to be served ; the other is the freight''s total slack time . Service time is effected by the process design and operation system of import and export operation . Slack time is effected by the other items except the opertion process .Dwell time isthe interval time between an imported freight''s arrival at the cargo terminaland the flight time. The one of the bottleneck of the import and export process is the speed and qulity of Trade-Van. The design of import process should be reengineered since the relationship between the cargo flow and documentation is low.The slack time results from the constraint of office hour of cargo terminal and the Customs ,flight schedule and flight frequency. The peak time of the freight''s arrival is at 14:00~15:00 and Friday night. At the peak time ,the unload area of export warehouse of Taipei air cargo terminal is congested.

Taiwan is mainly an import-export-oriented country. It does not have abundant natural resources. Therefore, international trade accounts for a large proportion of economic activities. With the increasing competitiveness of domestic high-tech industries such as semiconductors and optoelectronics in recent years, these high-tech electronic products have the characteristics of high unit price, small size, and timeliness. Most of the operators often use the air transportation to acquire the timeliness of the products. Therefore, the demand for air cargo transportation is more eager, which further activates the overall development of the aviation cargo market. Air Cargo Terminals (ACTs) are the air cargo market relay station. Its business development is closely related to the air cargo volume. Therefore, its operation is good for the overall efficiency of the air cargo market. According to the relevant information of the Ministry of Labor of the Executive Yuan, the occupational accidents in the transportation and warehousing industries have ranked first in the domestic industry, and cannot be ignored in comparison with the air cargo terminals of the same warehousing industry. It is rare to discuss the characteristics of occupational accidents in the early stage of the operating industry, which is the state-owned monopoly and the relevant research is biased towards organizational reengineering or privatization performance. Therefore, this study collects the occurrence of air cargo terminals in the workplace. Occupational hazards, using SPSS 21.0 software for statistical analysis, using the chi-square independence test, Spearman rank correlation coefficient, Phi (φ) coefficient and Cramer's V coefficient to understand the degree of correlation between variables, which found "hazard characteristics and disaster vectors" are highly correlated. For moderate correlation, there are "hazard characteristics and disaster types", "hazard characteristics and operation types", "disaster media and disaster types", "disaster media and operation categories". It is hoped that through the results of the research, it can provide air cargo terminals and other related contractors with relevant information to formulate a reference basis for reducing occupational disasters in the workplace.

Abstract:
In the first study, we formulate the passenger and cargo allocation problem as a variant of the price-dependent multi-item newsvendor model with capacity constraints. The effects of baggage weight, pricing, and costing on the number of passengers and amount of cargo carried are studied. Based on the model and the existing practice of carriers, we develop several illustrative cases and fend that to maximize profit, large aircraft may need to reduce their baggage limits significantly from the current policy.
In the second study, we propose the dynamic partnership concept, which assures a feasible partnership in an online logistics community. After identifying the platform requirements, a preliminary knowledge framework which describes the collaborative knowledge and new knowledge managing approaches is suggested.
In the third study, we provide a two-phase framework for an airfreight forwarder's resource planning. In each timed phase, an optimization model first determines the aggregates and a simulation model then examines the disaggregated situations evaluating whether the aggregate estimates are viable under disaggregation and uncertainties. Here, a set of measurements are established to evaluate the performance of a resource plan. For the inadequate plans, areas of possible improvements are identified for revision.
Three studies in air cargo logistics are conducted respectively, covering the following three areas: carrier's passenger and cargo management, logistics service provider's partnership strategy, and an airfreight forwarder's resource planning.
study 1. Optimal baggage limit policy: airline passenger and cargo allocation -- study 2. Dynamic partnership in online logistics community: concepts and a knowledge framework -- study 3. An airfreight forwarder's aggregate resource planning: booking of cargo space and disaggregation viability.

There are four air-cargo terminal operators in Taoyuan airport, the designed annual handling capacity is around 2.4 million tons, but the total volume handled in recent years is around 1.6 million tons only. The huge differences between the supply and demand, has generate fierce competition among them. Generally speaking, there are four major businesses for air-cargo terminals, the first is import cargo, the second is export business, third is air express business, and fourth is the special one, transfer cargo business which is ordered by carriers. Among them, the competition of export business is the most serious one. The aim of this study, as a consequence, is to find out what are the key success factors of the selected air-cargo terminal. Several possible key success factors have been examined and designed in the structure of questions to be interviewed. There are two groups of the interviewees, the first is the senior managers and operators of the selected air-cargo terminal, and the second is the senior managers of its competitors. The interview results could then shown an overall picture of the key success factors enjoyed by the selected air-cargo terminal. There are several contributions achieved by this study, the first is to found the differences between the key success factors among senior managers of the selected air-cargo terminal. The second is to find out the success factors by comparing the differences between the interview results of its competitors. Terminal operators may shorten the gaps with its competitors and improve competitive advantages based on these findings.

Following the growth of economic in China, how to attract more and more air cargoes is the first mission and aims of major airports in Asian. Recently, China’s government had discussed about the policy of openness with US, but it did not sign this agreement. Thus, transshipment cargoes could support the development for airlines and regional airports because there is not enough supplies for this market. For the competitive airports, it has become the challenge as attracting cargoes from different regional airports. This study will analyze air cargo transshipment market with four main trade routes for the case of route "Shanghai to Los Angles" In order to analyze current market, we collected historical data from government, airlines, airports and consulting association. For detail understanding the competitiveness of each air cargo route, this paper conducted the method “Five-Focus Analyze” by Dr. Michael E. Porter to analyze each transshipping modes on this trading route. The result of study that can provide decision markers of air cargo industry as well as the governments with available and responsible information regarding the trend of this transshipment cargo market.

Air cargo forwarder as the servers to the shippers and the customers to the airlines, play an important role in the whole process of supply chain. However air cargo forwarder is an operation intensive industry that involves many participators and complicated operations. So a powerful information system is needed to optimize the performance of cargo control between oversea commerce partners, customers and branch companies and helpful in raising the competitiveness. The purpose of this study was using UML(Unified Modeling Language) to model an air cargo forwarder system of logistics provider. First, the research will discuss the concepts of the supply chain management, the characteristics of global logistics management, and the definition of the third party of logistics provider — air cargo forwarder. Then the research use UML as a modeling tool to construct an air cargo forward system. From this research, we can find that the system modeled by UML was more fit for real requirements of business than before and took the information flows along supply chain with maximal cost efficiency, effectiveness, delivery, and flexibility.

Due to world trade liberalization and global supply chain, air cargo industry has been booming for the past several decades. The growth rate of air cargo has surpassed that of air passengers, and recent forecasts are projecting for this to continue in the future. Since American Airlines’ successful implementation, revenue management (RM) has become a common practice for air passenger business. However, the application of RM to the air cargo industry is still at an early stage. Therefore, this study is aiming to apply RM to the management and daily operations of air cargo industry, for the airlines to fully utilize the limited cargo space and increase cargo revenue. With current hub-and-spoke operation of airlines, the focus of the RM research has shifted from the traditional single-leg version to multi-sector one considering the network effect. Based on former studies, this study develops a static programming model considering network effect and takes the two key dimensions of air cargo, weight and volume, into account. Moreover, this study verifies the model by performing the numerical test for both static and dynamic model validation, and evaluates the benefits based on the actual operational date. The result in the static numerical experiment, the minimum booking acceptance rate, is a good decision support for airline cargo space controller to manage the valuable resource. Besides, it is found that RM shows an average of 6~15% revenue improvement compared with current human judgment in dynamic numerical experiment. It is believed that this study should serve as a good solution for airlines to well-manage the cargo booking and space control, and then to improving cargo loading and increase cargo revenue.

Taiwan is a trade-importer/exporter country consisting of group of islands. International trade occupies a relatively large portion in the economic activities. Foreign economic activities need to depend on sea or air transportation. The government realizes this point and thus gives importance to the related architectures. Because of the recent upsurge and vigorous development of technology, the needs of air cargo transportation can be more understood. A higher demand can be asked from service and performance of the industry provider. Because air cargo traffic not only influence the production cost, scale, economic position but also resource allocation, price standard and also influence the domestic and international investment and disinvestment strategies. The operations of air cargo terminal (shortly termed terminal in the succeeding portions) is a connection means between the air cargo on land and air transportation itself. This includes the import and export of cargo including their stay time on terminals and other related work. The course of improvement for terminal work is all related to the overall traffic efficiency of the terminal. During the performance evaluation of terminal, many indices must be simultaneously considered and decide on their importance. Because there is a dependence or influence among the indices, the decision on how to weigh each index’s importance is complicated. In addition, due to the mutual influence among the performance indices, the correlation among the indices must also be considered during terminal performance evaluation. This study integrates Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and Analytic Network Process (ANP) to formulate a performance evaluation model. This will achieve the precise air cargo terminal evaluation performance. Hence, the key improving factor will be located after calling upon the performance. When doing the performance evaluation of the terminal, we use DEMATEL to know the causal relation and correlation of each index. ANP is also used to know the weight of each. When inspecting the performance of the terminal, the weight and correlation of the indices can be recalled in order to know how to improve the terminal’s efficiency.

Option contracts are increasingly applied in the air cargo industry because it effectively reduces the capacity utilization risk of cargo airlines. The air freight forwarder reserves a certain amount of capacity based on the reserve price and execute price offered by the air cargo carrier, and determines the quantity to be executed after the market demand is realized. When the amount of capacity reserved by the forwarder does not meet the contract market demand, the required quantity can be purchased from the spot market at the spot price. In addition to price, the study considered four behavioral factors, goods security, transport efficiency, customer service, and equipment convenience, as assessment criteria of the amount of capacity reserved by forwarders. We discuss multiple air freight forwarders and air cargo carriers competing with each other and determine the optimal pricing and reservation policy for each of them. Through the results of numerical analysis, we noticed that when the number of forwarders increases, the profits will decline due to the price wars. Therefore, forwarders can consider cooperation or even mergers to increase market power. On the other hand, the carrier's focus should not be limited to capacity utilization because higher utilization does not always lead to better profits, and should consider cooperation with forwarders which can increase profits by reducing operating costs, providing better service quality and cultivating loyal customers.

Air cargo forwarding is an industry that requires both expertise and manpower resources cooperated. When an uncertain error or mishandling occurs, it will lead to impact on operation process. In spite of the rich literature on the assessment of vulnerability and resilience in supply chain field, to the best of knowledge, none of those existing works have considered the assessment of vulnerability and resilience in air cargo forwarding industry. Therefore, this paper applies the assessment of vulnerability and resilience in supply chain field to finding out the vulnerable factors that cause the interruption of air cargo forwarding operation and to providing resilience strategies of business resuming after an interruption. The study process is briefly introduced as follows. First, from the reviewed literatures, we summarize the vulnerability factors that air cargo forwarding might face to, and evaluate the importance of these vulnerability factors by questionnaire from related experts. Then, the data obtained from surveys is analyzed through the Principle Component Analysis (PCA) method and concluded to seven key vulnerability factors. The purpose of this research is to study the vulnerable factors and to provide effective resilience solutions. Finally, this study proposes three resilience solutions by the interview of experts from air cargo forwarding industry. Among the three resilience solutions, flexibility and consistency are commonly acknowledged and used when a vulnerable factor occurs.

Air cargo terminal is the key point in the airfreight market, whose business development is correlated with the amount of the goods of air transport directly. Indirectly for Air cargo warehousing established beneficial operation niche. It is the most important topic in the current research to inspect and evaluate the performance of the domestic Air cargo warehousing, in order to help manager discover problems in managing, and then promote advantage and competition. Before the performance evaluation, it is important to select carefully to the indicators of the evaluation. The DEA documents in the past, the variables of input and output were chosen subjectively so that it causes error and conflicting analysis. This study applies Grey Relation analysis to select representative indicators as DEA input and output variables in order to make efficient analysis. Moreover, the basis of inconsistence characteristic in production and marketing strategy in carrying trade. This study set up revised two-stage performances evaluation model, which includes efficiency and effectiveness. This model can be not only used to evaluate the efficiency of resources utilization in industry but also to understand the effect of output utilization. According to the result, administrators can adjust operational strategic by the information of the input and output. The result shows: (1) 10 representative indicators were selected from 32 initial evaluation indicators. Of those, 2 was belonged to the production aspect, 3 was belonged to the marketing aspect, and 4 was belonged to the execution aspect. (2) In Taiwan Air Cargo Terminal, it was presented relatively efficient in both efficiency and effectiveness stage in 89、 91 years. In Everterminal and Far Glory Air Cargo terminal was presented simple efficiency in effectiveness stage during 90-91 years, other years relatively efficient smaller than 1. We propose that industry should revise its operation policy to promote cooperative operation efficiency.

Owing to the past research of Taiwan Air cargo forecast data is outdated; it cannot reflex the present market situation, so this research will focus on the two main airports C.K.S international airport(CKS) and Kaohsiung international airport(KHH) to analyze and forecast their import, export and re-export cargo. This dissertation will use the Fuzzy Regression as the main research method. The research result as follows: (1) The Fuzzy Regression is suitable for explaining the situation when both Independent Variable and Dependent Variable are Crisp Value. The most common types of Fuzzy Regression are Interval Regression and Fuzzy Least-Squares Linear Regression, but for estimating air cargo, the FLSLR is the best method. In a small population situation, the FLSLR overall forecasting power will be better than Byungjoon & Bishu (1998) FMLS model and other traditional regressions. (2) The development trend of air cargo quantity in Taiwan in the coming five years: data shows that the overall international air cargo quantity is arising. From the year of 2005 to 2010, the average growth rate is about 1.15%. By separating total air cargo into export, import and re-export, the export cargo is far more than the import cargo from the year of 2005 to 2010. Taking the year of 2005, total export cargo quantity is 7,598,736 Metric Tons (MT) and import cargo quantity is 530,918 MT. In the re-export side, the future 5 years may reach up to 1,932,374 MT. comparing the two main Taiwan International airports, from the year of 2005 to 2010, total air cargo quantity in CKS is still higher than KHH, about 14.8 times of KHH. (3) Main problem facing in Taiwan future air cargo market: A. Air Cargo Quantity and Supply of Warehousing. B. Keeping on the present situation, the growth of air cargo in the year 2005 to 2010 is classified as Low Growth by the Boeing company classification system. C. Air Cargo Policy: The government policy will surely affect the air market. So, here suggests the government should develop the Asia Air Hub and on the other hand, establish direct traffic between Taiwan and Mainland China will sure help to increase the air cargo quantity in the future.

Abstract:
The air cargo industry has been in a constant change becoming nowadays a very competitive and dynamic industry. Traditional airlines, that once only focused on the passenger transportation, already noticed the importance and profitability of the air cargo segment while the all-cargo carriers are considerably growing due to the high demand. Air cargo is one of the major means of transport in the world today due to several factors, such as the growing global trade or the high demand for timely deliveries. To understand and improve the overall performance and efficiency of air cargo carriers in the today’s complex market it was created a set of the most relevant key performance areas (KPAs) and key performance indicators (KPIs). These allow studying how air cargo carriers can operate more efficiently to respond the needs of a globally competitive market, and to help decision makers to select the best alternatives to ensure the best assessment regarding performance and efficiency of several air cargo carriers. This research evaluates the overall performance and efficiency of Cargolux and Lufthansa Cargo, over the course of ten years (2006 – 2015). Thus it was used a MCDA (Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis) tool, more specifically, MACBETH (Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical Based Evaluation Technique), using criteria weights and value scales for each KPI and KPA, derived from the results of a survey applied to industry experts. Based on the survey results, this study finds that the most relevant key performance area for the performance case study is the operational KPA and for the efficiency case study is the productivity KPA. The results confirm that the air cargo is a complex and vulnerable industry and that some global events have challenged the evolution of this industry.

Abstract:
The development of mass prediction models, specific for the Air Cargo Challenge competition, is presented on this dissertation. This Design/Build/Fly competition has a major interest to the University of Beira Interior, particularly to the Aerospace Sciences Department. These models are divided in two development methods: statistical and structure equations based type. The statistical mass models are developed based on data collected from past editions and are divided in general and component based mass models. The accuracy of this type of models is, mainly, dependent on the amount of data available. On both of them three models are presented, one containing all available aircraft and two more created from the division in two groups of the original one. Using the structure equations method, where the amount of material is determined, required to withstand the stresses that the airplane is subjected, a model is developed for each one of the three wing configurations considered, mainly CFRP, D-box CFRP and CFRP tube spar. The tail boom component equation is created independently and the remaining components masses are determined from coefficients based on geometric characteristics and the wing mass calculated. The associated average error to these models is inferior to 1%. The results obtained from the application in the considered study cases are also presented and the respective validity, accuracy and application, in terms of design phase, for each method, are discussed.
O erro médio associado a estes modelos é inferior a 1%.

Two sides of Taiwan Strait speak the same language and share the same culture, however, the economic and social environments are quite different. China is a developing country with a vast of cheap labors and plenty of raw materials. Contrarily, Taiwan is a developed country with high-technology manufacturing economic base. Integrally, two sides perform mutually dependent but complementary activities on the global supply-chain manufacturing. As a result, the trade between two sides grew in double-digit annually in the 90’s. Even though, there are no direct air links between two sides due to the political differences, the direct air links are inevitable. In this research, we researched and interviewed through a vast of governmental documents of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, and air cargo carriers and airlines serving China-Taiwan air links. These materials enable us to tabulate the trade, estimate the air cargo and realize the major carriers and airports serving the China-Taiwan air link. Subsequently, we analyzed the current Chinese air route maps of her domestic airlines, and used the connectivity measurement to classify airports into national, regional and local classes. The classification allows us to determine the China hub-and-spoke air network and potential airports for future direct air connections. With the development of a mathematical model, we determined the top direct airfreight airports were Shanghai Xiamen and Changsha. The outcome does not coincide with direct passenger airports. The top three most proposed by researchers are Fuzhou, Xiamen and Shanghai.

Factors affecting air cargo revenue management are numerous. Air cargo companies base their charges on the larger of weight and volume of the cargo. This study develops the mode of cargo consolidation and Unit Load Device (ULD) based on the characteristics of air cargo, and investigates the impact of the density of a cargo, the ratio of heavy cargo to light cargo, and the percentage of small cargo on the chargeable weight and revenue of an air cargo company. The empirical test result shows that the larger the ratio of heavy cargo to light cargo, the greater the chargeable weight is; and as the ratio of heavy cargo to light cargo climbs to a certain degree, the increasing extent of the chargeable weight of the cargo tends to stabilize gradually. The more the density of cargo approaches the most suitable loading density for a flight, the greater the chargeable weight is. A higher proportion of small cargo loaded on a flight indicates the company gains higher revenue. Lastly, this study performs a regression analysis based on the actual operational data of airline companies to obtain a regression equation of the chargeable weight and revenue of air cargo. The results of this study can serve as a useful reference for airline companies and relevant members of the aviation industry.
