Abstract:
The buoyancy-driven air flow and the associated energy transfer within a half-scale stairwell model have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experimental work comprised the larger part of the investigation. The stairwell model consisted of a lower and an upper compartment connected through the stairway. The recirculation of air was maintained by a continuous supply of heat in the lower compartment. Two different cases, referred to as closed and open non-sloping ceiling stairwells, were considered. In the former, the stairwell formed a closed system, and in the latter situat

To complement the model tests, computation fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to study aerator flows. To represent the two-phase flows, multiphase models should be employed. Abstract:

abstract: Modern gas turbines operate at high mainstream gas temperatures and pressures, which requires high durability materials. A method of preventing these hot gases from leaking into the turbine cavities is essential for improved reliability and cost reduction. Utilizing bleed-off air from the compressor to cool internal components has been a common solution, but at the cost of decreasing turbine performance. The present work thoroughly describes the complex flow field between the mainstream gas and a single rotor-stator disk cavity, and mechanisms of mainstream gas ingestion. A combined

Instead of using density distribution, a distribution of air collision probability, the danger value distribution (DVD), is used to represent each aircraft. The closer the distance to the aircraft, the higher the danger value is. Since an aircraft passes through wider space under faster speed in a fixed time period, the faster the aircraft the wider the danger value distribution will be. This concept is the same as the prot

abstract: Efficient performance of gas turbines depends, among several parameters, on the mainstream gas entry temperature. At the same time, transport of this high temperature gas into the rotor-stator cavities of turbine stages affects the durability of rotor disks. This transport is usually countered by installing seals on the rotor and stator disk rims and by pressurizing the cavities by injecting air (purge gas) bled from the compressor discharge. The configuration of the rim seals influences the magnitude of main gas ingestion as well as the interaction of the purge gas with the main gas

An important step is to understand the inherent response of free surfaces in depth-limited flows. Here a model is presented to demonstrate that free surface oscillatory spatial correlation patterns result from individual surface features oscillating vertically as they advect over space and time. Comparison with laboratory observations shows that these oscillating surface features can be unambiguously explained by simpl
