Abstract:
Air-riding bearing and seal technology comprises rotor and stator elements separated by a thin air-film and experiencing relative rotational motion. The Navier- Stokes equations for compressible flow lead to a modified Reynolds equation incorporating additional high-speed rotation effects. The dynamics of the system are investigated when the axial position of the stator is prescribed by a finite amplitude periodic forcing. Two different physical configurations of air-riding technology are considered in this thesis; a squeeze-film thrust bearing and a pressurised air-riding face seal. Details a

Current wind turbine performance codes are not yet able to predict the rotor aerodynamic behaviour with sufficient certainty. This has led to both the over-design of blades and to operational restrictions in certain wind conditions. Essentially the problem is one of aerodynamic stall. Steady 3-dimensional stall can occur near the blade root in high wind conditions and may produce more power than predicted. Dynamic stall can also be expected due to the effects of yawed operation, turbulence, tower shadow and the earth's boundary layer. The main aim of this work is to provide a coherent set of m

The future of aircraft lies in highly intelligent vehicles which are able to adapt themselves to different missions and take-off and land anywhere. Tailsitters, aircraft capable of controlled transitions between horizontal flight (like a fixed-wing aircraft) and vertical flight (like a rotary-wing aircraft), are one such form of vehicle. The focus of this research stems from a collaboration between the Surrey Space Centre and QinetiQ involving a new class of VTOL tailsitter - the QinetiQ Eye-On™ UAV - which offers uniqueness from all other known tailsitters in its use of twin helicopter rotors

In this dissertation we present advances in developing an autonomous air vehicle capable of navigating through unknown, indoor environments. The problem imposes stringent limits on the computational power available onboard the vehicle, but the environment necessitates using 3D sensors such as stereo or RGB-D cameras whose data requires significant processing. We address the problem by proposing and developing key elements of a relative navigation scheme that moves as many processing tasks as possible out of the time-critical functions needed to maintain flight. Abstract:

The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/deri

The swing-type rotary piston provides extraordinary benefits of less friction, less number of parts and more endurance of product. By following the concept of the compressor, we redesign the inlet and outlet vents in 90 degree span angle to accommodate four stages of expanding cylinders. The thickness of each cylinder is thickened 1.4 times larger than its previous one as to recover the same force in every cylinder for the press

An Example is the throttling process of compressed air systems. Using a micro air turbine generator that can produce electricity under pressure expansion, the wasted energy can be recovered. This paper proposes a millimeter-scale air turbine which can be used for electric generation. The air turbine is based on a single-stage axial reaction turbine with a rated rotational speed of 100,000 RPM and a rated mechanical power output of 150 W

With the increasing demand for high speed turbomachinery, the dynamic analysis of rotor bearing system has become very important. Foil bearings with their exceptional feature of negligible wear has gained a very important place in the field of turbomachinery but the nonlinearities present in the bearing call for the dynamic analysis of these bearings. In the present work, a dynamic modeling approach and parametric identification scheme of a single disc rotor mounted on foil bearings is presented. Rotor is analyzed with conventional lumped parameter model. The time varying bearing forces are ob

For several decades, Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) have generated considerable interest in the control and commercial community due to their advantages over manned systems. Cutting edge techniques in senors, communications and robust control can now make affordable commercial missions involving Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) a reality. The aim of this work was to control an autonomous UAV using H[sub ∞] loop shaping and MPC control laws and further demonstrate formation control with three such identical UAVs.
