Abstract:
Network connectivity is core competitiveness of the aviation industry and opening a new route is one of critical ways to enhance network competitiveness. As many airport operators are becoming more interested in attracting airlines, there are vast needs to discuss the methods for estimating (predicting) potential demands for a new flight route or by increasing flight frequencies in existing routes.This study explores demand estimation models for a new air route. Similar to previous studies, this study classified potential demand for a new air route into four types (Local, Beyond, Behind and Bridge). Explanatory variables are identified and constructed for each type of demand, including distance, relative capacity compared with adjacent airports and detour ratio as main independent variables. One of the strengths of the suggested demand models can distinguish the generated demand from the converted or re-distributed demand. Based on this, the model is meaningful for an airport operator to develop an airport policy such as airport-usage charges and incentives to attract airlines.On the other hand, because of the strong recognition that demand estimation for a new air route is the area of airlines that decide on whether or not to introduce a new route, simply developing demand estimation models from the perspective of an airport operator is not sufficient. Therefore this study is considered as the initial step for an airport operator in its efforts to attract airlines and market new air routes to enhance network connectivity of its airport.

Abstract:
In this work we developed a fuzzy neural network-based model of the conditions for the existence of air routes, i.e. the rules underlying the emergence, existence and elimination of air routes (direct links between cities). The model belongs to the class of information models: the existence or non-existence of an air route is considered dependent on a complex of parameters. These parameters characterise the transport link, as well as the generational and target capabilities of the connected cities. The model was constructed using genetic algorithm techniques and self-organising Kohonen maps (implemented by software features of the STATISTICA package), as well as software tools of the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox and the Neural Network Toolbox of the MatLab development environment. The model is used to forecast the development of the topology of the network. The forecast is a necessary component of long-term forecasts of demand in the aircraft market.

This analysis is dedicated to find out methods for setting of route networks where new aircraft can be effectively put into service. The conception of this analysis is based on the idea of so called connectivity principle for airports connected by passenger traffic with each other.For the passenger traffic analysis the author took passenger traffic data by federal districts starting from the Far East. Then consequently the data for Siberian, Ural, Wolga, Northwestern, Central, Southern and North Caucasian federal districts were analyzed. Passenger traffic to the Crimea was treated separately. Detailed specifications of passenger traffics were provided in order to determine the connections between airports both within federal districts and beyond them and with neighboring areas in western direction. Query of routes was done based on limitations for non-stop flight range and on minimum and maximum (for significant traffics) flight frequencies.The analysis approach lets us concentrate attention on those airlines which at best fit for putting into service of chosen aircraft. Also this method permits to determine the routes with currently insufficient or low traffics but where there’s a definite growth potential. When analysis data are combined with traffic data and tariffs, then it becomes possible to determine the most profitable routes for introduction of new aircraft. Traffic volume, actual figures and forecast, consolidated characteristics of chosen airlines, list of airlines for further studies of efficiency and competitiveness of introduced aircraft are determined.

Passenger flow is an important planning factor in an air transportation system. However, forecasting segment (link) and airport flows becomes more complicated in a hub-and-spoke system since segment flows are the aggregations of route flows, and the number of routes increases with hubbing activities. This research develops an equilibrium model considering certain important characteristics of an air transportation system such as distance, airport delay, airline competition, and networks to predict segment and airport passenger flows from the viewpoint of the whole system. The major features of the model include ( a) treatment of segment flows and airport delays as endogenous by considering the feedback of assigned segment flows and their impacts on airports; ( b) reflecting the flexibility of air networks, a start with all links between all airports as the potential network and determination of the predicted network according to the equilibrium flows on segments; and ( c) connection of key elements of the system so that it can evaluate the system impacts of some element changes. The model is demonstrated by applying it to the National Airspace System of the United States. Several characteristics of the model are also investigated. In addition, a policy experiment shows that improvement of an airport not only affects the airport itself but also changes the flows and performance of other airports–-the model can be a tool for evaluating systemwide effects. Finally, the model's limitations and possible remedies are discussed.

Abstract:
The Chinese main air transport network (CMATN) is the framework for air passenger transport in the country. This study uses complex networks and an econometric model to analyze CMATN’s evolution and determinants. In terms of overall network structure, the network has always shown small-world properties, with smaller average path lengths (2.06–2.15) and larger clustering coefficients (0.68–0.77), while its cumulative degree distribution follows an exponential function. City passenger volumes conform to the degree power law function, which means that the more destinations a city connects to, the higher its passenger traffic will be. In major hub cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, control power decreases, while Chengdu, Kunming, Chongqing, Xi’an, Urumqi, and other cities play an increasingly important role in CMATN. In terms of main route passenger volumes and formation, increases in GDP and tourism have had a promoting effect, while high-speed rail (HSR) poses a threat to overlapping routes. CMATN is primarily located in the central and eastern regions, focusing on China’s economy, tourism, and efficient HSR development. Although the competition from HSR affects the overall network structure of CMATN based on its influence on specific routes, we believe that the impact is limited due to the different transport attributes of the two networks. The research results of this study can become an information source for decision makers and provide a reference for air transport to seek sustainable development.

Based on a full consideration of the rich tourism resources of the Northeast region, reducing costs and improving the convenience of the traveling of passengers, and improving the benefits of airlines, all these problems can be changed into direct flight routes between non-hub cities, so that a mixed integer linear programming model can be builded that it can make the lowest operating costs in the entire route network. With tabu search method and the shortest path algorithm to solve the model, so as to obtain the Northeast route layout scheme, and verify the feasibility of the scheme.

This paper deals with analyzing and modelling performances of a long-haul air route network operating as the queuing network. The network consists of the routes/tracks with flight levels serving aircraft/flights as the service channels. The main network performances are the ultimate and practical capacity of service channels, the aircraft/flight demand, delays before entering and total time of aircraft/flights spending in the network, and the related generalized costs including those of airlines, air passengers, policy makers and society. The analytical models of the particular network performances and three routing or assignment models/procedures for matching the aircraft/flight demand to capacity are developed and applied to the long-haul air route network in the North Atlantic airspace between Europe and North America. The results have indicated that. the network capacity has been strongly dependent on the number of routes/tracks and flight levels, i.e., service channels and their ultimate and/or practical capacity. The ultimate capacity has been mainly influenced by the ATC (Air Traffic Control) separation rules applied between aircraft/flights operating in the same directions. The practical capacity has been strongly influenced by the ultimate capacity and the average delays imposed on aircraft/flights before entering the network. The rather superior and close to optimal model/procedure for matching demand to capacity has been routing or assignment of the aircraft/flights demand in proportion to the ultimate or practical capacity of particular service channels minimizing the total generalized costs of the actors/stakeholders involved.

This paper develops a mapping approach to explore the relationship between different layers of a multilayer air transport network composed of airway, route, and flight network. A two-step methodology is adopted to investigate the hierarchical structure and mapping relationship of the integrated network. First, the relationship between airway and route network is characterized by a multisource multisink shortest path method based on a generalized incidence matrix. Second, the relationship between route and flight network is formulated by a two-dimension array. A case study of an en route airspace in Lanzhou air traffic control area in China verifies the feasibility of the proposed two-step methodology.

Abstract:
Air Traffic Management (ATM) aims at ensuring safe and efficient movement of aircraft in the airspace. The National Airspace System is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul known as NextGen. With the predicted growth of air transportation, providing traffic flow managers with the tools to support decision making is essential. These tools should aid in accommodating the air traffic throughput increase, while limiting controller workload and ensuring high safety levels. In the National Airspace System (NAS), the goal of en-route Traffic Flow Management (TFM) is to balance air traffic demand against available airspace capacity, in order to ensure a safe and expeditious flow of aircraft, both under nominal and perturbed conditions. The objective of this thesis is to develop a better understanding of how to analyze, model and simulate air traffic in a given airspace, under both nominal and degraded conditions. First, a new framework for en-route Traffic Flow Management and Airspace Health Monitoring is developed. It is based on a data-driven approach for air traffic flow modeling using historical data. This large-scale 3D flow network of the Cleveland center airspace provides valuable insight on airspace complexity. A linear formulation for optimizing en-route Air Traffic is proposed. It takes into account a controller taskload model based on flow geometry, in order to estimate airspace capacity. The simulations run demonstrate the importance of sector constraints and traffic demand patterns in estimating the throughput of an airspace. To analyze airspace degradation, weather blockage maps based on vertically integrated liquid (VIL) are incorporated in the model, representing weather perturbations on the same data set used to compute the flows. Comparing the weather blockages and the network model of the airspace provides means of quantifying airspace degradation. Simulations under perturbed conditions are then run according to different objectives. The results of the simulations are compared with the data from these specific days, to identify the advantages and drawbacks of the present model.

Le développement récent des Loisirs Motorisés Hors Route (LMHR) suscite une controverse et de vives réactions dans les milieux du sport et de la protection de l'environnement. Le phénomène est encore peu étudié, à la fois du fait qu'il est récent, que l'argumentation relève de plusieurs disciplines et que les loisirs motorisés, s'ils font partie sans problème de l'outdoor recreation nord-américaine, sont rejetés en France par les autres sportifs et ne sont pas reconnus de façon évidente comme relevant du domaine d'une discipline particulière.

Afin de combler un manque dans la littérature scientifique française, cette thèse vise à apporter une connaissance fine de la dynamique de la controverse – en tant qu'échange d'arguments génériques – et des conflits dont les LMHR font l'objet. Elle présente deux originalités majeures : sa thématique et son approche combinant les théories de l'acteur-réseau avec les outils de visualisation et d'analyse de réseau basés sur la théorie des graphes. Cette construction théorique et méthodologique visait à interroger les interrelations entre la controverse portée par des collectifs présents sur la scène nationale et les conflits et interactions sur le terrain. Pour cela, nous avons mené des enquêtes sur quatre scènes : la scène nationale (composée de collectifs pro et anti-motorisé, de Fédérations, de constructeurs, de gestionnaires et décideurs et d'élus) ; deux scènes locales conflictuelles où des démarches de gestion sont en cours (le PNR du Pilat et les Chambarans) ; une scène locale où aucun conflit n'est visible sur la scène publique (le canton de La Grave – Villar d'Arène).

Nos résultats montrent, que bien que la controverse trouve ses racines dans des conflits sur le terrain, il n'existerait pas de coprésence entre acteurs qui s'opposent. D'abord, en l'absence de conflit, la scène de La Grave apparaît déconnectée du reste du réseau. Ensuite, les détracteurs des LMHR se mobilisent dans la controverse mais ne cherchent pas directement à agir sur le terrain. Par contre, les défenseurs de la pratique s'impliquent, eux, aux deux niveaux. Enfin, les gestionnaires et agents de la police de l'environnement confrontés à la gestion des activités, nouent des liens sur le terrain et au niveau national, à la fois avec les défenseurs et les détracteurs des LMHR ; devenant parfois des acteurs-passerelles.

D'un point de vue théorique et méthodologique, les outils de visualisation et d'analyse de réseau ont montré leur intérêt dans le cadre d'une approche par l'acteur-réseau ; les perspectives apparaissent riches.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with problematics of installing wireless routers into specific locations depending on their heating and ideal signal transmission. The thesis is divided into eight chapters. The beginning of the thesis is theoretical describes the introduction into the problematics, the second part is practical and covers the executed experiment. The theoretical part contains six chapters – heat, signal, wireless router and measured climatic conditions. The practical part describes the executed experiment by thermo-camera which was used to scan wireless routers in IoT Lab in Avast Software company. Based on this experiment, the ideal position for installing the wireless router is then established. The conclusion of the practical part includes an analysis of the results of the questionnaire survey, in which technically skilled people were asked to describe the height of installation of their wireless router or whether did they consider heat and signal propagation while installing their wireless routers.

This chapter discusses the role of the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses, in providing a means for slaves in Illinois and other parts of the country to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause. Citizens of Bond County, Illinois, had been harboring runaway slaves as early as 1819. The first known case of dispatching a fugitive from Chicago to Canada occurred in 1839. Much of the communication relating to fugitive slaves was carried on in a guarded language. Special signals, whispered conversations, passwords, and figuratively phrased messages were the usual methods of conveying information about underground passengers, or about parties in pursuit of fugitives. The abolitionists knew these as the “grape-vine telegraph.” This chapter considers a variety of ways in which fugitives were conveyed from station to station, along with the participation of railroads in this endeavor.

Many people today have never heard of the Comoros, but these islands were once part of a prosperous economic system that stretched halfway around the world. A key node in the trading networks of the Indian Ocean, the Comoros thrived by exchanging slaves and commodities with African, Arab and Indian merchants. By the seventeenth century, the archipelago had become an important supply point on the route from Europe to Asia, and developed a special relationship with the English. The twentieth century brought French colonial rule and a plantation economy based on perfumes and spices. In 1975, following decades of neglect, the Comoros declared independence from France, only to be blighted by a series of coups, a radical revolutionary government and a mercenary regime. Today, the island nation suffers chronic mismanagement and relies on foreign aid and remittances from a diasporic community in France. Nonetheless, the Comoros are largely peaceful and culturally vibrant—connected to the outside world in the internet age, but, at the same time, still slightly apart. Iain Walker traces the history and unique culture of these enigmatic islands, from their first settlement by Africans, Arabs and Austronesians, through their heyday within the greater Swahili world and their decline as a forgotten outpost of the French colonial empire, to their contemporary status as an independent state in the Indian Ocean.

This article describes the great distance that separates Sardinia from mainland Italy has made the island – the second largest island of the Mediterranean – a marginal and remote region. Its system of ferry links for people travelling to and from Sardinia has such long journey times (8-12 hours) that it is clearly in no way a valid alternative to air transport. It was mainly on the basis of these reasons and with a view to protecting and ensuring the mobility of Sardinian residents that Public Service Obligations (PSO) were imposed on some of the main air routes starting from 2002. Our study is set against this background. It aims to resolve one of the main critical factors that distinguish the PSO network: the shortage of flights on certain routes and the concomitant over-scheduling of others. More specifically, the insufficient scheduling of weekly flights to certain airports, such as Verona and Turin, forces a number of passengers to decide not to travel at all and another part to use connecting flights to Rome/Milan airports or to travel using more than one route, via air or ground transport, with inevitably higher transport costs. The problem was addressed by using a linear scheduling model applied to a network of nodes and arcs representing, respectively, the airports and their connecting routes, and the airport of Cagliari. The decision variables identified were the number of passengers travelling on all of the arcs and the impedance measures associated with the distance travelled by the arcs, represented by the generalized cost of transport. The objective is to determine a network structure which corresponds to the distribution of passengers on the various branches capable of minimizing the total cost. This cost was considered as a useful parameter for comparing the various network scenarios which were obtained by changing the passenger load coefficient and the number of flights. Our study demonstrates that a simple intervention, aimed at the internal reallocation of the flights on the various routes, is able to guarantee categories of users (here divided into business and non-business users) greater access to air transport services. The scenario that more than others is able to improve service efficiency, granting undeniable benefits for all users without having an impact on the costs of air carriers, particularly stands out because it: • Allows access to all network airports through direct flights; • Decongests the Rome and Milan routes

Abstract:
This chapter presents the role, functions, and prospects of civil unmanned aerial vehicles development, as well as technical and regulatory barriers to the introduction of unmanned aircraft into special cargo transportation technology. The authors' main idea is that the degree of UAV involvement in freight traffic will continue to grow rapidly as the range of UAV flight and carrying capacity increases, and the air law is liberalized. It is proposed to evaluate the economic efficiency of UAV application and their share in the market for the transportation of urgent and perishable goods using the methodology based on the principles of logistics and mathematical modeling. In the formulated model, the process of special cargoes delivery by unmanned aerial vehicles is integrated into the supply chain by all modes of transport along the set route network, taking into account the requirements formulated by the freight forwarder, carrier, and logistics company.

Abstract:
In the present technological environment, the aerospace industry needs cutting-edge materials not only to meet the requirements such as lower weight and higher values of strength and stiffness, but also to protect against electromagnetic interference. In this article, an attempt has been made to prepare Al6061 hybrid metal matrix composites reinforced with varying percentages of SiC, Al2O3, and fly ash particulates through a stir-casting route. As per ASTM standards, various tests have been conducted to know the density, tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. Simultaneously, all the prepared composites are tested for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) under the X band frequency with the help of a vector network analyzer. In order to identify the composite possessing good mechanical properties, as well as shielding effectiveness, a TOPSIS methodology has been employed in this work. The present study reveals that the proposed hybrid composite contains 5% of each reinforcement material which shows better mechanical properties as well as good shielding effectiveness.

Abstract:
Previous work in air transportation system-of-systems design optimization considered integrated aircraft sizing, fleet allocation and route network configuration. The associated nested multidisciplinary formulation posed a numerically challenging optimization problem; therefore, direct search methods with convergence properties were used to solve it. However, the complexity of the blackbox is such that it impedes greatly the solution of larger-scale problems, where the number of considered nodes in the route network is high. The research presented here adopts a rule-based route network design inspired by biological transfer principles. This bio-inspired approach decouples the network configuration problem from the optimization loop, leading to significant numerical simplifications. The usefulness of the bio-inspired approach is demonstrated by comparing its results to those obtained using the nested formulation for a 15-city network. We then consider introduction of new aircraft as well as a larger problem with 20 cities.

The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous traffic conditions to improve the mobility and reliability of people and goods. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line light rail transit (LRT) extension, which connects Old Concord Rd and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s main campus on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for travel time reliability analysis. The influence of crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, greenways, on-street bicycle lanes, bus/LRT routes and stops/stations, and street network characteristics on travel time reliability were comprehensively considered from a multimodal perspective. Likewise, a 2.5-mile-long section of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects University City Blvd and Mallard Creek Church Rd on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for simulation-based operational analysis. Vissim traffic simulation software was used to compute and compare delay, queue length, and maximum queue length at nine intersections to evaluate the influence of vehicles, LRT, pedestrians, and bicyclists, individually and/or combined. The statistical significance of variations in travel time reliability were particularly less in the case of links on N Tryon St with the Blue Line LRT extension. However, a decrease in travel time reliability on some links was observed on the parallel route (I-85) and cross-streets. While a decrease in vehicle delay on northbound and southbound approaches of N Tryon St was observed in most cases after the LRT is in operation, the cross-streets of N Tryon St incurred a relatively higher increase in delay after the LRT is in operation. The current pedestrian and bicycling activity levels seemed insignificant to have an influence on vehicle delay at intersections. The methodological approaches from this research can be used to assess the performance of a transportation facility and identify remedial solutions from a multimodal perspective.

Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four key headings:  High quality, high impact research: the importance of archaeological science is reflected in work that explores issues connected to important contemporary topics, including: the demography of, the nature of movement of, and contact between peoples; societal resilience; living on the Atlantic edge of Europe; and coping with environmental and climatic change. A series of large-scale and integrated archaeological science projects are required to stimulate research into these important topics. To engage fully with Science in Scottish Archaeology iv these questions data of sufficient richness is required that is accessible, both within Scotland and internationally. The RCAHMS’ database Canmore provides a model for digital dissemination that should be built on.  Integration: Archaeological science should be involved early in the process of archaeological investigation and as a matter of routine. Resultant data needs to be securely stored, made accessible and the research results widely disseminated. Sources of advice and its communication must be developed and promoted to support work in the commercial, academic, research, governmental and 3rd sectors.  Knowledge exchange and transfer: knowledge, data and skills need to be routinely transferred and embedded across the archaeological sector. This will enable the archaeological science community to better work together, establishing routes of communication and improving infrastructure. Improvements should be made to communication between different groups including peers, press and the wider public. Mechanisms exist to enable the wider community to engage with, and to feed into, the development of the archaeological and scientific database and to engage with current debates. Projects involving the wider community in data generation should be encouraged and opportunities for public engagement should be pursued through, for example, National Science Week and Scottish Archaeology Month.  Networks and forums: A network of specialists should be promoted to aid collaboration, provide access to the best advice, and raise awareness of current work. This would be complemented by creating a series inter-disciplinary working groups, to discuss and articulate archaeological science issues. An online service to match people (i.e. specialist or student) to material (whether e.g. environmental sample, artefactual assemblage, or skeletal assemblage) is also recommended. An annual meeting should also be held at which researchers would be able to promote current and future work, and draw attention to materials available for analysis, and to specialists/students looking to work on particular assemblages or projects. Such meetings could be rolled into a suitable public outreach event.

Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four headings: 1. From Source to Sea: River systems, from their source to the sea and beyond, should form the focus for research projects, allowing the integration of all archaeological work carried out along their course. Future research should take a holistic view of the marine and maritime historic environment, from inland lakes that feed freshwater river routes, to tidal estuaries and out to the open sea. This view of the landscape/seascape encompasses a very broad range of archaeology and enables connections to be made without the restrictions of geographical or political boundaries. Research strategies, programmes From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report iii and projects can adopt this approach at multiple levels; from national to site-specific, with the aim of remaining holistic and cross-cutting. 2. Submerged Landscapes: The rising research profile of submerged landscapes has recently been embodied into a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action; Submerged Prehistoric Archaeology and Landscapes of the Continental Shelf (SPLASHCOS), with exciting proposals for future research. Future work needs to be integrated with wider initiatives such as this on an international scale. Recent projects have begun to demonstrate the research potential for submerged landscapes in and beyond Scotland, as well as the need to collaborate with industrial partners, in order that commercially-created datasets can be accessed and used. More data is required in order to fully model the changing coastline around Scotland and develop predictive models of site survival. Such work is crucial to understanding life in early prehistoric Scotland, and how the earliest communities responded to a changing environment. 3. Marine & Maritime Historic Landscapes: Scotland’s coastal and intertidal zones and maritime hinterland encompass in-shore islands, trans-continental shipping lanes, ports and harbours, and transport infrastructure to intertidal fish-traps, and define understanding and conceptualisation of the liminal zone between the land and the sea. Due to the pervasive nature of the Marine and Maritime historic landscape, a holistic approach should be taken that incorporates evidence from a variety of sources including commercial and research archaeology, local and national societies, off-shore and onshore commercial development; and including studies derived from, but not limited to history, ethnology, cultural studies, folklore and architecture and involving a wide range of recording techniques ranging from photography, laser imaging, and sonar survey through to more orthodox drawn survey and excavation. 4. Collaboration: As is implicit in all the above, multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches are essential in order to ensure the capacity to meet the research challenges of the marine and maritime historic environment. There is a need for collaboration across the heritage sector and beyond, into specific areas of industry, science and the arts. Methods of communication amongst the constituent research individuals, institutions and networks should be developed, and dissemination of research results promoted. The formation of research communities, especially virtual centres of excellence, should be encouraged in order to build capacity.
