Abstract:
The urbanization process alters the radiative, thermal, moisture and aerodynamic characteristics of a surface, which significantly affect the surface energy balance within the atmospheric boundary layer. Such modifications can lead to the so-called urban warming phenomenon, where the extent and rate of urban surface and air temperature is substantially higher than the corresponding rural region, which has caused serious concern in recent decades. However, the understanding of the causes of urban warming is incomplete, and the same applies to lack of effective mitigation strategies. Therefore,

This study examines the spatial and temporal characteristics of the surface air temperature in Portland, Oregon. Spatial temperature patterns indicate that the dominant control factors on seasonal temperature distribution are local topography, elevation, and urban-rural differences in surface structure. A heat island exists in the Portland area; the intensity of the heat island rang€s from 4° to 10° F, and varies throughout the year. The strongest heat island is found in the July minimum temperature. Temperature distribution in Portland and the adjacent area is affected by winds and rainy cond

Abstract:
Defect generation and propagation in thin films, such as separation membranes, can lead to premature or catastrophic failure of devices such as polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). It is hypothesized that defects (e.g., air bubbles, pin-holes, and holes) originate during the manufacturing stage, if precise control is not maintained over the coating process, and they propagate during system operation. Experimental and numerical studies were performed to detect and eliminate defects that were induced during slot die coating of high-viscosity (1 to 40 Pa-s), shear-thinning solutions.

"Modelling of Heat Transfer for Convection-boosted Flat Vertical Radiator Surfaces : An investigation of how heat transfer is influenced by radiator height and freestream air velocity." Abstract:
In this thesis, a calculation model is created to study a theoretical radiator-like configuration, consisting of a flat vertical plate heated with a constant capacity rate. This lumped capacitance model is partly created to more theoretically look at radiators with add-on-fans, but also to in such a setting look at fundamental heat transfer relationships. System heat transfer is studied for various heights, H (m), and freestream velocities, u (m/s). These results are then subject to validation, where comparison is made with values derived from two relevant reference studies. It is found that p

Abstract:
The path to future aero-engines with more efficient engine architectures requires advanced thermal management technologies to handle the demand of refrigeration and lubrication. Oil systems, holding a double function as lubricant and coolant circuits, require supplemental cooling sources to the conventional fuel based cooling systems as the current oil thermal capacity becomes saturated with future engine developments. The present research focuses on air/oil coolers, which geometrical characteristics and location are designed to minimize aerodynamic effects while maximizing the the
