Abstract:
AbstractThe aim and objective of the project work is the modeling of control surface which has complex three dimensional aerodynamic profiles using solid works software, performing analysis of the model with the imposed loads and boundary conditions using ANSYS to estimate the maximum stress and deflection. The material used for this component is titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) which has good properties like resistance to corrosion, high strength to weight ratio, which are mostly needed for aerospace vehicles. The actual dimensions of control surface are 350×225×20. The model of the control surface is scaled to 1:2 for manufacturing using Proe/Manufacturing module, the part programmes are generated and are transferred to the specific machine through DNC system.Control surface is probably the most commonly used form of missile control, particularly for long range airto-air missiles and surface-to-air missiles. The primary reason for this application is because tail provides excellent maneuverability at high angles of attack.Deckel E3LV CNC milling machine has been used for manufacturing the control surface. Development of 3D model using solid works then it is transferred to PROE software for generating error-free tool path and checking the tool path using simulation. Post processing of CL (cutter location) Data file to generate CNC part program, transferring the same to the respective machine tool via DNC system from CAM workstation and manufacturing of the control surface. Co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) is used for the inspection of features, as the control surface is having complex three-dimensional aerodynamic profile. On this machine, every dimension of the control surface has been inspected and found that the dimensions are within the design considerations of the given design.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: To compare clinical features, pulmonary function and high-resolution computed chest tomography (HRCT) findings of asthmatic patients with a component of incomplete reversibility of airflow obstruction (AIRAO) with those of patients with smoking-induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).METHODS: Thirteen patients with COPD (six males and seven females, mean age 59 years, mean smoking 50.5 pack-years) and 14 patients with AIRAO (six males and eight females, mean age 52 years) despite optimal treatment, with no significant smoking history (mean 1.5 pack-years) and no significant environmental exposure or any other respiratory disease, were studied. Patients had respiratory questionnaires, pulmonary function tests, allergy skin-prick tests and an HRCT to evaluate possible parenchymal or bronchial abnormalities. Eight patients in each group also had exercise tests. All patients were stable at the time of the study.RESULTS: As expected, atopy was more prevalent in AIRAO (n=13) than in COPD (n=1) patients. Mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (percentage of predicted value) were 39% and 61%, respectively, in COPD patients and 49% and 71%, respectively, in AIRAO patients; FEV1improved by 18% in COPD patients and and by 22% in AIRAO patients after use of inhaled salbutamol. Mean functional residual capacity was greater in COPD patients than in AIRAO patients (178% versus 144% of the predicted value), while the mean carbon monoxide diffusing capacity of the lungs (DLCO) was lower in COPD patients than in AIRAO patients (62% versus 89% of the predicted value). Exercise tolerance was similar in both groups, as were postexercise changes in arterial oxygen pressure (PaO2). Emphysematous changes were observed in COPD patients and AIRAO patients who had evaluable HRCTs (10 versus two patients, although very mild in asthma), bronchial dilations (zero versus six patients), bronchial wall thickening (two versus eight patients) and an acinar pattern (one versus five patients). Mean thickness of the large airway wall to outer diameter (intermediary bronchus) ratio was 0.176 in COPD and 0.183 in AIRAO (P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Asthma may lead to physiological features similar to COPD but may be distinguished by demonstrating a preserved DLCO and a higher ratio of airway to parenchymal abnormalities on HRCT scan.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy of Airgo™, a non-invasive wearable device that records breath, with respect to a gold standard. In 21 healthy subjects (10 males, 11 females), four parameters were recorded for four min at rest and in different positions simultaneously by Airgo™ and SensorMedics 2900 metabolic cart. Then, a cardio-pulmonary exercise test was performed using the Erg 800S cycle ergometer in order to test Airgo™’s accuracy during physical effort. The results reveal that the relative error median percentage of respiratory rate was of 0% for all positions at rest and for different exercise intensities, with interquartile ranges between 3.5 (standing position) and 22.4 (low-intensity exercise) breaths per minute. During exercise, normalized amplitude and ventilation relative error medians highlighted the presence of an error proportional to the volume to be estimated. For increasing intensity levels of exercise, Airgo™’s estimate tended to underestimate the values of the gold standard instrument. In conclusion, the Airgo™ device provides good accuracy and precision in the estimate of respiratory rate (especially at rest), an acceptable estimate of tidal volume and minute ventilation at rest and an underestimation for increasing volumes.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVENavigation-enabling technology such as 3D-platform (O-arm) or intraoperative mobile CT (iCT-Airo) systems for use in spinal surgery has considerably improved accuracy over that of traditional fluoroscopy-guided techniques during pedicular screw positioning. In this study, the authors compared 2 intraoperative imaging systems with navigation, available in their neurosurgical unit, in terms of the accuracy they provided for transpedicular screw fixation in the thoracic and lumbar spine.METHODSThe authors performed a retrospective analysis of clinical and surgical data of 263 consecutive patients who underwent thoracic and lumbar spine screw placement in the same center. Data on 97 patients who underwent surgery with iCT-Airo navigation (iCT-Airo group) and 166 with O-arm navigation (O-arm group) were analyzed. Most patients underwent surgery for a degenerative or traumatic condition that involved thoracic and lumbar pedicle screw fixation using an open or percutaneous technique. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with at least 1 screw not correctly positioned according to the last intraoperative image. Secondary endpoints were the proportion of screws that were repositioned during surgery, the proportion of patients with a postoperative complication related to screw malposition, surgical time, and radiation exposure. A blinded radiologist graded screw positions in the last intraoperative image according to the Heary classification (grade 1–3 screws were considered correctly placed).RESULTSA total of 1361 screws placed in 97 patients in the iCT-Airo group (503 screws) and in 166 in the O-arm group (858 screws) were graded. Of those screws, 3 (0.6%) in the iCT-Airo group and 4 (0.5%) in the O-arm group were misplaced. No statistically significant difference in final accuracy between these 2 groups or in the subpopulation of patients who underwent percutaneous surgery was found. Three patients in the iCT-Airo group (3.1%, 95% CI 0%–6.9%) and 3 in the O-arm group (1.8%, 95% CI 0%–4.0%) had a misplaced screw (Heary grade 4 or 5). Seven (1.4%) screws in the iCT-Airo group and 37 (4.3%) in the O-arm group were repositioned intraoperatively (p = 0.003). One patient in the iCT-Airo group and 2 in the O-arm group experienced postoperative neurological deficits related to hardware malposition. The mean surgical times in both groups were similar (276 [iCT-Airo] and 279 [O-arm] minutes). The mean exposure to radiation in the iCT-Airo group was significantly lower than that in the O-arm group (15.82 vs 19.12 mSv, respectively; p = 0.02).CONCLUSIONSIntroduction of a mobile CT scanner reduced the rate of screw repositioning, which enhanced patient safety and diminished radiation exposure for patients, but it did not improve overall accuracy compared to that of a mobile 3D platform.

Abstract:
Botos (Inia geoffrensis) are currently provisioned for use in tourist attractions in five sites in the Brazilian Amazon. Despite the known negative effects associated with human-wild dolphin interactions, this activity has been regulated and licensed in the Anavilhanas National Park in Novo Airão, Amazonas State, Brazil. We present an updated evaluation of the perception of the local community concerning the possible socioeconomic impacts of this tourism in Novo Airão. In April 2011, 45 interviews were conducted with inhabitants. A small segment of Novo Airão perceives currently itself as being economically dependent on the botos feeding tourism. Despite that, the economic benefits of this controversial activity apparently are not shared among most inhabitants, and botos feeding tourism is perceived as generating diverse negative effects. We conclude that if the activity was banned or modified into a less impacting tourist activity, this action would probably not majorly affect the lives of the general population.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction.A new generation of iCT scanner, Airo®, has been introduced. The purpose of this study is to describe how Airo facilitates minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF).Method. We used the latest generation of portable iCT in all cases without the assistance of K-wires. We recorded the operation time, number of scans, and pedicle screw accuracy.Results. From January 2015 to December 2015, 33 consecutive patients consisting of 17 men and 16 women underwent single-level or two-level MIS-TLIF operations in our institution. The ages ranged from 23 years to 86 years (mean, 66.6 years). We treated all the cases in MIS fashion. In four cases, a tubular laminectomy at L1/2 was performed at the same time. The average operation time was 192.8 minutes and average time of placement per screw was 2.6 minutes. No additional fluoroscopy was used. Our screw accuracy rate was 98.6%. No complications were encountered.Conclusions. Airo iCT MIS-TLIF can be used for initial planning of the skin incision, precise screw, and cage placement, without the need for fluoroscopy. “Total navigation” (complete intraoperative 3D navigation without fluoroscopy) can be achieved by combining Airo navigation with navigated guide tubes for screw placement.

Abstract:
Abstract The basic effect of extratropical atmosphere–ocean thermal coupling is to enhance the variance of both anomalous sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and air temperatures (AIRT) due to a decreased energy flux between the atmosphere and ocean, called reduced thermal damping. In this paper it is shown that rapidly varying surface winds, through their influence upon the turbulent surface heat fluxes that drive this coupling, act to effectively weaken the coupling and thus partially counteract the reduced thermal damping. In effect, rapid fluctuations in wind speed somewhat insulate the atmosphere and ocean from each other. The nonlinear relationship between the rapidly varying wind speed anomalies and SST and AIRT anomalies results in a rapidly varying component of the surface heat fluxes. The clear separation between the dynamical time scales of the ocean and atmosphere allows this rapidly varying flux to be simply approximated by a stochastic process in which rapidly varying wind speed is represented as Gaussian white noise whose amplitude is modulated by the more slowly evolving thermal anomalies. Such state-dependent (multiplicative) noise can alter the dynamics of atmosphere–ocean coupling because it induces an additional heat flux term, the noise-induced drift, that effectively acts to weaken both coupling and dissipation. Another key implication of the outlined theory is that air–sea coupling includes both deterministic and stochastic components. The theory is tested by examining daily observations during extended winter (November–April) at several ocean weather stations (OWSs). Two important results are found. First, multiplicative noise at OWS P effectively decreases the coupling by about one-third, with about a 10% (20%) decrease in the damping of SST (AIRT). This suggests that multiplicative noise may be responsible for roughly half of the AIRT variability at OWS P on subseasonal time scales. Second, OWS observations reveal that joint probability distribution functions of daily averaged SST and AIRT anomalies are significantly non-Gaussian. It is shown that treating the rapidly varying boundary layer heat fluxes as state-dependent noise can reproduce this observed non-Gaussianity. It is concluded that the effect of state-dependent noise is crucial to understand and model atmosphere–ocean coupling.

Abstract:
