Full textCupressus dupreziana A. Camus is a native tree of the Tassili n'Ajjer (Central Sahara). This conifer was regarded as a remnant, now lacking any regenerative capacity, of a forest that grew in wetter times. Investigations carried out between 1997 and 2001 show that there are 233 alive trees. A disappearance rate of 8% over the last thirty years has been recorded. The discovery of some very young trees testifies to this cypress' capacity for regeneration in situ. Determination of radial growth reveals a juvenile vigour in spite of arid climatic conditions. Pedonthracological analysis reveals the presence of Pistacia atlantica Desf. , its disappearance from the Tassili must be attributed to human over-exploitation ; this pistachio, and Laperrine's olive, must have formed quite widespread groves in the Tassili. The tourism which developed since 1953 is a new source of degradation of the environment, because there is no real measure of protection

Full textConsidering the face of human representations and evoking particularly firm presuppositions on a world of masks and animism considered as strictly black - African, number of the authors who studied the rupestral images of central Sahara mixed up "culture" and " racial identity ", artistic canons and anthropological kind, establishing a chopped cultural History, which is not argued. In Ozan Ehéré, remarkable cases of relationships illustrated by scenes showing an anthropomorphic touching a zoomorphic invite to suggest a parallel between representations in style of the Round Heads and the bovidians images (styles of Séfar - Ozan Ehéré, of Abañher, Iheren), while these groups are considered generally independent one of the other one and divided up by typological concern. A first structural approach of the rock art of the zone finally allows us to open stimulating ways, for example about the nature of beings represented on walls (who may not be human beings and ordinary animals attending to some commonplace occupation), and drives us to wonder about the function of these images. According to their possible feminine dimension, some Round Heads paintings could be taken out from the file of enigmatic representations. We could also get bovidians images out from the world of ornamental paintings, or of the chronicle - without appeal to literal readings

Full textThe rites of marriage are a privileged social time that the ethnolinguist's study takes as a subject of investigation among Tuaregs from ajjer in south east of Algeria. Marriage ceremonies involve a great number of rituals which allows close study of social groupings, in particular the status/position of women. In the Tuareg's culture, a traditional wedding is very expensive for the bridegroom and his family. This situation has produced a new custom; the institution of collective weddings initiated and supported financially by the stae, associations and also by gifts from shopkeepers. However, we observe some traditions remain even with the collective weddings. In this area, muslim religion disrupts the position of women, showing a real change in traditional values. The presentation of social changes allows the showing on the one hand of how a culture adapts to new circumstances, and on the other how some traditions are preserved. The paerticular status of woman who after marriage find themselves alone - widowed or repudiated, or more rarely separated - shows that in Tuareg culture the liberty of woman, usually vouched for in the past, is actually constrained by law and religion in Algerian society

Full textThe rock images of the central Sahara have suffered from the historical and human context of their discovery and then from both their scientific management and their heritage management. Their abundance and the difficulties of the Saharan field have been and are still negative factors, but the lack of knowledge from which these productions of prehistoric cultures are still suffering more than a century and a half after their discovery, clearly falls to those studying them in the past and present. Even if we admire these images for their aesthetic qualities, these form an integral part of the archaeological remains and should be studied as such. Nowadays, the digital and computerised tools enable us, firstly, to quantitatively and qualitatively improve their documentation thanks to image enhancement software used for the recording and the tracing; secondly, to more objectively investigate these artefacts by using other effective data-analysis tools and methods thanks to which their stylistic differences can be highlighted. The application of the processes developed in this research to several adorned walls at the Sefar site, an emblematic area of the Tasīli-n-Ăjjer (Algeria), shows that the use of these tools, supported by rigorous theoretical and methodological basis, allows us to offer a new approach to these rock images, more appropriate to their characteristic of being scientific data
