Finnigan, Frances. "Stereotyping in addiction : an application of the Fishbein-Ajzen theory to heroin using behaviour." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 1988. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=23791.

Abstract:
A review of the literature on Person Perception, as it relates to addiction, is given. Experiment 1 quantified people's subjective impressions of smokers, heavy drinkers, and heroin users, in terms of an empirically devised framework. The experiment also examined the impact of personal information (i. e a photograph) upon impression formation. It was found that, in the absence of a photogragh, heroin users were perceived as being dangerous. A review of the literature on stereotyping was carried out. Experiment 11 examined the lower limits of stereotyping heroin users as being dangerous. This experiment was conducted within the context of Tajfel's interpersonal-intergroup continuum. The findings were that, minimal personal information coupled with dissimilarities in personal values, resulted in stereotypic perceptions of heroin users whereas, responses to a personalized presentation with similar values, were more differentiated. The implications of stereotype beliefs about heroin users in the area of drug education is discussed. A review of the fear appeal literature is given. Experiment 111 examined the relative effectiveness of a fear appeal and a social appeal in influencing current heroin users' attitudes and intentions with regards to using heroin. This examination was systematically investigated within the context of Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action and their model of persuasive communication. It was found that, (i) heroin use is under attitudinal control, (ii) current heroin users hold a health belief structure and a social belief structure associated with the consequences of using heroin, and (iii) both the fear appeal and the social appeal had an effect on attitudes and intentions with regard to heroin use. Experiments IV and V examined the lay public and ex-heroin users' opinions regarding the relative effectiveness of emphasising health factors or social factors in attempts to influence heroin taking decisions. The findings revealed there to be a disagreement between the two groups. The lay public were of the firm opinion that emphasis should be placed an health factors. On the other hand, exheroin users regarded social factors as being more influential. The wider implications of these findings, in terms of drug evaluation studies, are highlighted.

Mehmedbegovic, Kemal, and Anna Angbo. Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Economic Sciences, Communication and IT, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-636.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This research aims at understanding social cognition and personality variables linked with different driving behaviours among drivers taking a course designed to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of road traffic accidents. We refer to the theory of planned behaviour by Ajzen (1991). We also add descriptive norms concerning family, anticipated regrets, social support and personality measures : impulsivity, time perspective and conscienciousness. 251 offenders aged from 18 to 77 have participated at the study. The results show that the behavioural beliefs (BB), descriptive norms (DN) and Past negative (PN) explain 47% of the committment of exceeding the speed limit less than 20 km/h. The BB, the DN and sensation seeking explain 20% of the committment of exceeding the speed limit by at least 30 km/h. The BB, the DN and urgency explain 26% of the frequency of close following. The BB, Present hedonistic and not to be with social support explain 44% of the commitment of risky driving. The BB, the normative beliefs (NB) and DN explain 42% of the frequency of not wearing the safety belt. A heavy marijuana consumption and BB (to feel able to drive after taking drugs) explain 43% of the commitment of Driving Under the influence (DUI) of marijuana. This same BB, coupled with a heavy drinking and NB explain 32% of the commitment of DUI of alcohol. To conclude, an effective prevention requires to implement action plans in 3 differents levels : the subject, the family, the society

Abstract:
The thesis tries to understand how the perception of companies social strategy impacts on the attitude of the individual future shareholders and thus their intention of purchasing shares from socially responsible companies. Our study allowed us to support the idea according to which the attitude of the individual shareholder towards companies does not depend only on economic and financial variables. The company social strategy also contributes to the training of attitude of future individual shareholders towards companies. Our results confirm the influence of perceptions of social responsibility on the intention of purchase of shares of future individual shareholders. Moreover, we noticed that the attitude is the main explanatory latent variable of the emergence of the intention. Other latent variables play or in a lesser way or in a indirect way through the attitude. Our approach, inspired by the paradigm of Churchill, allowed us to see again the causal relations highlighted in the model of Ajzen strategic behavior, our benchmark model. The originality of our approach also lies in the meshing between the factorial analyses and the structural equations in the exploratory phase and the PLS regressions methods in the confirmation step. Our study presents a double interest: from a theoretical point of view, there is the of planned behavior model and from a practical point of view, there is business lighting regarding the establishment of social policy and its impact to their potential shareholders. Keywords: Corporate Social Responsibility, PLS methods, exploratory factor analysis, structural equations, Future Individual Shareholder, Attitude

Abstract:
Standardised High-Stakes Testing is a staple of modern education systems worldwide. This study investigates teacher attitudes towards testing and whether there is a relationship between their school context and the formation of attitudes, using NAPLAN as a case-study. This study used Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour and Bernstein's Code Theory, in a mixed-method survey approach and drew on a population of English teachers from Queensland. It found that there were varied attitudes towards NAPLAN testing, and that there were some commonalities between the formation of these attitudes and the school context.

Alhendal, Dalal. "An Examination of Factors Inflencing Kuwaiti Science Teachers' Use of Inquiry-Based Instruction." Thesis, Griffith University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367234.

Abstract:
The current science education reform movement highlights inquiry-based instruction as a key approach in school science teaching. However, researchers have shown that internationally most teachers are not implementing reform or find it difficult to incorporate. In Kuwaiti classrooms inquiry-based instruction is rarely seen. Students are still taught primarily by rote-learning and memorization. Therefore, understanding factors influencing science teachers’ implementation of reform is a challenging issue in education research. Teachers' beliefs and attitudes about curriculum and instruction may play a significant role in the implementation of reforms. The more positive and optimistic the beliefs are the more likely a reform will be implemented. This study uses Ajzen’s (1985) theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and an adapted model of it known here as the Science Adoption Model (SAM) to study Kuwaiti science teachers’ beliefs and attitudes. This is in order to understand psychosocial attitudinal factors affecting teachers' intention to use inquiry-based instruction. Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) is a suitable framework for the current study as it utilises psychosocial factors to explore and predict behaviour in specific contexts (Ajzen, 1991) and was used to examine the influences of Kuwaiti primary science teachers' attitudes, subjective norms (social support), and perceived behavioural control (external influences).

Abstract:
Parental involvement at Shady Lane Elementary School is lower than the district average, which might be contributing to low levels of student achievement. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to explore attitudes of parents at the school and selected parental involvement behaviors. The framework for this study was the theory of planned behavior. The focus of research question 1 was the relationship between parents' attitudes toward the school and parental involvement in the form of communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. The focus of research question 2 was the relationship between parents' attitudes toward parental involvement and parental involvement in the form of communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. The covariates were parents' level of education, employment status, and income. Survey data were collected from 108 parents of students in Grades 1-5. Descriptive statistics showed parents had low levels of all 3 types of parental involvement and negative attitudes toward the school and that parents' attitudes toward parental involvement were almost equally positive and negative. Spearman correlations showed a positive correlation between both independent variables (parents' attitudes toward the school and parental involvement) and communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. Multiple regression analysis showed a positive predictive relationship between parents' attitudes toward the school and communicating and learning at home, and between parents' attitudes toward parental involvement and communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. Results may be used to improve students' achievement as a result of improved parental involvement.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This work seeks to present the Theory of Planned Behavior - Icek Ajzen TPB and check if the model study of the attitudes of Ajzen may contribute to explain the choices of undergraduates by determined educational brand. To this end we presented general theories of collaboration with attitudes of the concepts of Motivation and Human Needs and the changing concepts of the Theory of Reasoned Action to the theory of Planned Behavior. The Brazilian context demonstrates an increasing competitiveness, from the appearance of new Courses and Colleges between 2002 and 2010. This growth has increased the number of vacancies and decreased the number of students enrolled in each College. In this sense, it is necessary to know the aspects that direct students to choose the Higher Education Institution - IES. In order to verify the behavior of the students and the attitude influences in their decisions, the managers' perception of the IES and if the variables used as the planned behavior model proposed by Ajzen are sufficient to get statistically significant results, we applied an unstructured research with managers and IES Alpha managers and students entering, following the model proposed by Ajzen with some adaptations to the case study and the Brazilian standard. After analyzing the data with SPSS software, it was noticed that among the 36 initial variables, only 9 had statistically significant correlations, which identifies for student engagement with the Course and the Faculty, the relationship between price and brand and great family influence over their attitudes to advertising. However, the exclusion of key variables for the attitudes model study of Ajzen, there was an unfeasibility of its application. Thus, it was found that the most important components for students, differ from Administrative Management of Institutions of Higher Education, which may result in an incorrect application of its communication to attract prospective students

"Using Geographic Information Systems to Explore the Determinants of Household Water Consumption and Response to the Queensland Government Demand-Side Policy Measures imposed during the Drought of 2006-2008." Thesis, Griffith University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367470.

Abstract:
During a lengthy drought, and after imposition of a suite of demand-side policies, South East Queensland (SEQ) water use dropped dramatically, by nearly 80% in a three year period. This was an unprecedented response to water demand policy. It is not well known which of the particular policies was most influential in the reduction of domestic water use. Nor is it known which determinants of household water use were most significant for the greatest reductions in water use and for high water users. Urban water use, its determinants, and the interaction of these with demand-side policy, has been extensively investigated. However, most studies have been of relatively broad scale, and few have had access to household level datasets of domestic water use. A range of tools was used to investigate the reduction in household water use and to identify which households used more water. The water use of detached households on the Sunshine Coast (which did not have water restrictions) was compared to that of Brisbane (which did) to isolate the effect of water restrictions from the raft of demand side policy measures. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) was used to stratify households according to water use, and socio-demographic characteristics. Thereafter, a random sample of households in both LGAs was surveyed to explore how key in-depth household characteristics related to water use. Quantitative statistical analysis, including geodemographic techniques, was used to analyse patterns of water use, as well as census data. The survey design was guided by a range of commonly used psychological frameworks, particularly an extended version of Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Although qualitative analysis was not a component of the research methodology, the questionnaire included a single open-ended question, which was used to inform and flesh out the quantitative results.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study sets out to explore attitudes and intentions towards nicotine product goods and how it is affected by the goal framing effect. The presence of this effect has been shown in the advertising of both green products and everyday products. The aim of this research is to explore whether or not this also holds true when it comes to unhealthy products, more precisely tobacco free all white nicotine products.    A quasi experimental study was conducted with the use of a fictitious brand of All-white tobacco. All 63 participants in the three different experimental groups of the study met the mandatory age requirement. One of the three groups received a positively framed advert, another received a negatively framed advert, whereas the last group acted as the control group and therefore received a neutral advertisement stimuli. All participants submitted their answers on a questionnaire created for this study, which was validated using Cronbach’s alpha and factor analysis.   The results suggest that the use of goal framing is beneficial when advertising nicotine product goods. Both positive and negative goal-framing showed a greater effect on purchase intention and product attitude than the control group. The negative goal-framing advert proved to be statistically different than the control group when measuring product attitude. Furthermore, the positively framed advert showed a statistically significant difference in effect on both product attitude and purchase intention compared to the control group.    The findings suggest that positively framed goal-framing has an effect on both attitudes and purchase intention, compared to the neutral stimuli. The negatively framed goal-framing had an effect on attitudes, compared to the neutral stimuli. The practical implication of this study could possibly be that when constructing advertisements for tobacco free snus products, it could be preferable to make use of the positive goal-framing effect in order to affect the consumers purchase intention and attitude towards the product.   This study has confirmed to some extent that the framing effect is a factor prevalent in the advertising of tobacco free products. For further research it would be highly interesting to delve deeper in comparing positive and negative goal-framing in order to find further evidence of which one has greater effect on consumers.

Mukasa, Joel Wilberforce Senankya. "Workplace HIV and AIDS-related discrimination : unravelling the phenomenon’s persistence." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/10470.

Abstract:
Despite HIV and AIDS knowledge and attitude change programmes, workplace HIV and AIDS-related discrimination persists in workplaces in many sectors, including the education sector. This study set out to investigate why the phenomenon of workplace HIV and AIDS-related discrimination persists; and to predict which factors were responsible and how they related to HIV and AIDS-related discrimination in the workplace. A stratified random sample of 205 teachers; 123 of whom were from 10 schools of varied backgrounds in Bojanala Region of North West Province of South Africa and 82 from schools around Kampala, Central Region of Uganda was drawn. Twenty-seven respondents of the South African sample participated in both the quantitative survey and in-depth interview while the rest responded to a selfadministered questionnaire. Using a stepwise regression analysis, traditional beliefs predicted workplace HIV and AIDS-related discrimination, explained11% of variance in the second model while the third model explained only 2% more – 13% (R square of 0.136) but each of the three models was significant (p-values of 0.000). Attitudes were the second strongest predictor; and only HIV and AIDS-legal knowledge could predict discrimination but not biomedical HIV and AIDS knowledge. In the in-depth interview, incidents of discrimination were reported, possible reasons for HIV and AIDS-related discrimination were reported; and it was found that workers varied in ways of keeping secrets regarding sensitive information such as colleagues’ HIV-positive status, and cited reasons for revealing such information which included malice, jealousy, moral responsibility, anger and loose talks. There are implications for reducing workplace HIV and AIDS-related discrimination which include: Integrating HIV and AIDS-legal knowledge with biomedical HIV and AIDS knowledge, more efforts should be spent in designing and imparting information to reduce traditional beliefs, develop and evaluate instruments to measure traditional beliefs and HIV and AIDS-legal knowledge; and to study more about secret keeping, particularly in regard to workplace HIV and AIDSrelated discrimination.
