Rickettsia akari, an obligately intracellular bacterium, is the causative agent of the cosmopolitan urban disease rickettsialpox. R. akari is an atypical representative of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFG) as it is associated with rodent mites rather than ticks or fleas; however, only limited information is available about the degree of genetic variability found among isolates of R. akari. We examined 13 isolates of R. akari from humans, rodents and mites in the USA, the former Soviet Union, and the former Yugoslavia made between 1946 and 2003 for diversity in their tandem repeat regions (

AbstractThe Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI has a near-infrared (2--5μm) spectroscopic capability with high sensitivity that allows us to study the major ice components in various objects. In particular, H2O and CO2 ice absorption features have been detected towards nearby galaxies, including several young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), as well as a number of HII region-PDR complexes for the first time by IRC spectroscopy. While observations in the LMC show a high ratio (~0.34) of the CO2 to H2O ice column densities, the ratios in Galactic HII-region-PDR comple

AbstractWe have examined the relationship between star formation and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by fitting the spectral energy distributions (SED) of AKARI selected galaxies. PAHs are excited by the ultraviolet (UV) photons of young stars and can trace star formation in galaxies, but they are disassociated by the strong UV radiation in starbursts. AKARI covered the mid-infrared, where the PAHs emit their radiation, with a high density of photometric bands. These observations allow us to estimate the star formation rate and the PAH mass fraction of the dust in galaxies. In the futu

AbstractWe present the initial results of the AKARI mission program QSONG (Quasar Spectroscopic Observation with NIR Grism). QSONG utilizes the unique AKARI capability of performing spectroscopic observations at 2.5–5 μm, with the aim of understanding the mass evolution of ~200 quasars at 3.4 < z < 6.5 from their rest-frame optical spectra. The program also studies the rest-frame NIR spectra of 99 well-studied quasars at low redshift (z < 0.5) and 10 red quasars. With the high-redshift QSONG observations, we detect and resolve redshifted optical lines such as Hα for the first time at

AbstractWe observed an area of 10 deg2 of the Large Magellanic Cloud using the Infrared Camera on board AKARI. The observations were carried out using five imaging filters (3, 7, 11, 15, and 24 μm) and a dispersion prism (2 − 5 μm, λ/Δλ ~ 20) equipped in the IRC. The 11 and 15 μm data, which are unique to AKARI IRC, allow us to construct color-magnitude diagrams that are useful to identify stars with circumstellar dust. We found a new sequence in the color-magnitude diagram, which is attributed to red giants with luminosity fainter than that of the tip of the first red giant branch. We suggest

ABSTRACT Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (cigale) is a powerful multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code for extragalactic studies. However, the current version of cigale is not able to fit X-ray data, which often provide unique insights into active galactic nucleus (AGN) intrinsic power. We develop a new X-ray module for cigale, allowing it to fit SEDs from the X-ray to infrared (IR). We also improve the AGN fitting of cigale from UV-to-IR wavelengths. We implement a modern clumpy two-phase torus model, skirtor. To account for moderately extincted type 1 AGNs, we imp
