Full textThe design of the offices affect how organizations are perceived internal and externally. The design has changed over time that to some extents depend on the society development and fashion. Activity-based workplace is a new way to design offices and many more organizations choose to implement an activity-based workplace approach nowadays. The purpose of the study is to create understanding of the influence of fashion in organizations development by studying the introduction of activity-based workplace. The study is based on a deductive research approach with a qualitative research methodology. The study is a cross-sectional research with data collection from more than one case. Eight qualitative interviews and two observations have been completed. There are several reasons for implementing an activity-based workplace. Reduced costs due to reduced workspace premises, increased productivity, being environmentally responsible, increased attractiveness, collaboration and innovation creation are examples of reasons for the implementation. In a fashion metaphor, the spread of the activity-based workplace concept is increasing provenly, which is done by consultants, companies and the media. The idea of activity-based workplace has entered the discourse of organization and it is about to change the norm that maintains the image of what is considered the best way to design the workplace; that is what gives organizations legitimacy.

Full textGlobalization and the outside world's influence on modern organizations have created new demands and goals for our Swedish employers. Flexibility and rapid changes demand that today's employers must be well-suited for change. This in turn means that the employee must also be ready to meet similar requirements. New technology and new ways of working have given the modern office worker a daily life that can be completely paperless and because of this the employee isn't linked to one specific workstation. The key reason for to the new way of working is to increase profitability, but benefits such as increased creativity and increased cooperation among employees are highlighted as benefits from the employer. This study is based on a qualitative approach. The aim of the study was to capture the employees experiences of working activity-based. The study does not intend to explain whether this new way of working is good or bad for the employee, but only for the purpose of capturing their experience. The study shows that the overall experience of working activity-based is good, but that experiences vary between different individuals. The conclusion is that employees need to have the feeling of being able to control their everyday lives and opportunities to choose the right place for the right task for this work method to be experienced well. The value of this research lies in the fact that because employee experience is something that has not been the center of the research before, and we need to know more about the effects of this increasingly popular way of designing modern offices. If we capture the employee's experience of working in this environment, we can more easily understand how it is perceived and better conditions improve the working environment in the long term in a society that continually places new demands on organizations and employee's.

Full textOur changing society influence and challenge the way of working and organizing work. Many organizations change the office environment and the work concept in order to create a more supporting workplace. A growing office trend is the concept activity based working, henceforth called ABW. The work concept means a paperless office, designed in different zones customized to suit the needs of employees. The employees have no fixed seats, instead they are encouraged to choose workstation based on the assignment. The concept aims to inspire and promote collaboration and innovation, but also to increase profitability. The study, which is based on a qualitative approach, aims to explore how employees in the organization perceive that the physical and psychosocial work environment is affected by working activity based and which factors in the changed way of working that leads to increased or decreased perceived health and job satisfaction. The study shows that the physical environment has a strong positive impact on employees' perceived job satisfaction but that the activity based working in itself not always is perceived as positive. The employees did not fully utilize the activity based working concept as it is supposed and the different office zones are often perceived as non-functional. The main reasons for why the physical and psychosocial work environment is perceived as impaired are partly that the employees do not have their own seats, partly the reduced possibilities to gather the whole group. The conclusion is that good health and job satisfaction is more easily achieved if considering the employees individual conditions as well as ability and willingness to handle the changes that the new way of working means. Since the knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of the concept, as well as it’s impact on employees' physical and psychological health is limited, we believe our study to be of value. Through improved knowledge and understanding the opportunities to create a more sustainable worklife increases.

Full textActivity-based working has been on the rise for some years and has become a big trend both in Sweden and the rest of the world. It is a controversial concept that has both received praise and criticism. The aim of the study is to investigate how employees in the academia experience working in an activity-based office with a focus on psychosocial work environment and social relations, and whether there is a connection between the individual's tasks and their experience. A qualitative study has been conducted at a university/college in Sweden, a total of six semistructured interviews have been held. Respondents' perception of their experiences of the activity-based working varied, but the most respondents were negative. The main factors that were lifted were the sound level and the transparency, the respondents used different coping strategies to overcome the problems. The result shows that the social relations in the workplace have both been strengthened and deteriorated. The respondents' tasks were highlighted as problematic within an activity-based office. Based on the study's results, the most negative factor for the respondents' psychosocial work environment and the experience of the activitybased working were the factors that were outside the individual's control, where successful coping strategies were not applicable.

Full textTo investigate what a change into an activitybased workplace (ABW) means to managers view of leadership in relation toemployees and how managers handles it in relation to their identity as managers, six female and three male managers, from four different organizations, havebeen interviewed. The IPA-method was used for interview analyzes based ontheories about management/leadership, empowerment and identity work. The resultshows that a transfer into ABW may lead to a passing of responsibility towardsemployees and a strategic leadership/management based on goal management, trustand an increased responsibility for social structures. An individual, servingleadership facilitates a sustainable leadership in ABW. Participants haveappreciated the leadership/management development, and no identity workconflicts has been detected. The study gives examples of changing processestowards ABW. More studies have to be done in order to investigate how ABW fitsdifferent types of organization and different types of employees.

Full textThe aim of the study was to elucidate sustainability with activity-based working (ABW) based on the manager's own situation with a focus on how managers experience ABW and how managers perceive health and well-being in activity-based workplaces. A qualitative research design with semi-structured interviews as data collection with inspiration from phenomenographic analysis was used in the study. The results of the study showed that four description categories could be distinguished for how managers experience ABW. The different categories reflected managers' perceptions of how opportunities and challenges in working activity-based affect working conditions and sustainability. The managers' main focus on health and well-being was based on the employees' perspectives that need to be balanced against managers' own needs. The flexibility that ABW offers was appreciated by managers and also led to preparedness for unexpected situations. It takes time to get used to ABW and it is not suitable for all individuals or for all occupational categories. In order for ABW to be health-promoting and sustainable, the way of working needs to be evaluated more and adapted to its own organization.
