Abstract:

Abstract:
Arabic grammar went a long way before it became a stand-alone science at the hands of Abu Al-Aswad Al-Du’ali. its first seeds began after the revelation of the Noble Quran and the spread of Islam, when the need for translating its verses became urgent, so that it would be understood by all the Desert Arabs, who were not at the same level of eloquence and understanding, and understood the Noble Qur’an correctly. And this is what the Prophet, peace be upon him, did when he explained many verses by clarifying the conjugation of words, or their uses, and thus he had sow the first seeds of grammatical reference, and he was followed in that by his great companions, may God bless them, such as Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, Ibn Masoud, Ali Ibn Abi Talib and Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him. All of them, and some of the followers such as Mujahid bin Jabr, Hassan Al-Basri and others, where many grammatical terms appeared. It should be noted that these grammatical analyses were for interpreting the Book of God Almighty, and were not to build a knowledge based on its own. Until Ali, may God be pleased with him, and Abu Al-Aswad Al-Du’ali came, and with them the journey of the science of Arabic grammar, which was matured at the hands of Al-Khalil and his student Sibawayh, began.

Abstract:
Among the books available to report on the events of Ashura, one of the reference books is the book "Muntahi Al-Amal" written by Shaykh Abbas Qomi. In spite of the great efforts of its author who is a scholar, sometimes weak reports are also found. Therefore, the present article, with a descriptive-analytical approach, seeks to answer the following question: Which of the Ashura narratives of the book Muntahi Al-Amal is weak and invalid? From what source has Shaykh Abbas Qomi cited these weak reports? Are these Ashura reports acceptable? At the end, it was revealed that the some of the narratives quoted in this book are weak such as the use of ‘Noureh ’ by Imam Hussain (PBUH) in the morning of Ashura, the martyrdom of a person named Wahab ibn Abdullah, the martyrdom of a young man whose father was killed, the martyrdom of Ali Akbar (AS) by an arrow in his throat, the famous report of how Hazrat Abbas (AS) went to battle and fought, the crying of Umm Al-Banin (AS) and Marwān ibn Al-Ḥakam on Hazrat Abbas (AS), anointing Ali Asghar (AS) with his throat blood, the number of wounds of Imam Hossein (PBUH), the entrance of Imam Hossein (PBUH) with his horse to the battlefield and complimenting the water to each other and reporting the second farewell of Imam (PBUH), exaggeration in the number of those killed by Imam Hussain (PBUH), looting of the ring of Imam (PBUH) as well as preventing Umar ibn Sa’ad from attacking his army to the tent.

Abstract:
If we examine the development of Hadith studies, we will find a number of Muslim and non-Muslim thinkers launching accusations against the a’dalah of the Companions of prophet muhammad peace be upon him, especially Abu Hurairah ra. Ahmad Amin for example, considered that some friends like Aisha and Ibn Abbas ra. Saying that in the history of Abu Hurairah there is a lie, because of the many narrations he memorized. All of these allegations in essence are doubtful of the problem of Abu Hurairah in particular, and friends in general. The Companions of the Prophet in the study must have a fair nature, whether all the Companions, small and large, both young and old, who are involved in the war between Ali and Mu‘awiyah or not, are all fair, whereas according to the majority scholars such as Imam Abu Hanifah, Syafi‘i, Malik, Ibn Hanbal, al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Taymiyah and so on that all friends are fair. Friends are all fair but even so, it does not mean that a just person is the infallible person of sin and error, but obedience to him is more dominant so that he can avoid small sins and stay away from big sins.

Abstract:
Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases in recent decades worldwide. It has been distinguished as the main risk factor of coronary artery disease, aortic dissection, heart failure, renal failure, cerebrovascular diseases, and death. In recent years, the global attention has been paid to complementary medicine to preventive, diagnostic and treatment strategies for hypertension, in previous studies, the history of hypertension from the viewpoint of traditional Persian medicine have been reviewed and several hypotheses raised. In this article, we present the concept of an Iranian physician namely Ali ibn Sahl Rabban al-Tabari on hypertension, which has not been considered properly until now. He defined a state called “Hayajan al-dam” that has clinical manifestations similar to hypertension, although these are not the same, also, we reviewed the viewpoint of other Persian medicine scholars namely Rhazes, Haly Abbas, Akhawayni and Avicenna for this topic. Abstract:

Psoriasis (Da’u-us-Sadaf) is a common, disfiguring, inflammatory, and chronic autoimmune skin disorder with a worldwide distribution, highest incidence is in Europeans, and the lowest in Asians from the East. The prevalence of psoriasis in adults varies from 0.44 to 2.8%, in India. The word psoriasis is derived from Greek word ‘psora’ meaning ‘itch’ ‘iasis’ meaning ‘action, condition’. Da’u-us-Sadaf is derived from Arabic words ‘daun’ means ‘disease’ and ‘Sadaf’ means ‘oyster shell’. Psoriasis or Da’u-us-Sadaf are not mentioned in any classic literature since ancient times. It was considered in the context of Taqashur-e-Jild and Qashaf-e-Jild by famous Unani physicians; Razi, Majoosi, Ahmad Bin Mohd Tabari, Ibn-e-Zohr, Akbar Arzani, Azam Khan, because of dryness of the skin and scale formation, which clinically resembles very much with psoriasis (Da’u-us-Sadaf). According to Ali Ibn-e-Abbas Al-Majoosi has described that Tabiyat expels the Khilt-e-Ghaleez from internal organs towards skin resulting in the dryness and itching of the skin, but in this condition skin is unable to remove Khilt-e-Ghaleez leading to accumulation of sauda in skin and produce Taqashur-e-Jild. Unani scholars has emphasized the Usool-e-Ilaj (principle of treatment) such as evacuations of black bile (Istifragh or Tanqiyahe Sauda), use of blood purifier (Tasfeeh-e-Dam), Munzijate Sauda (Melancholic concoctives), Mushilate Sauda (Melancholic purgatives), Tabreed Badan (genesis of ratoobat or fluids in the body), try to restore normal temperament (Tadeele Mizaj), topical application of jali (detergent), murakhi (emollient), murattib and mohallil (anti-inflammatory) advia. In this review we have tried to discuss about Unani and modern aspects of psoriasis (Da’u-us-Sadaf).

Abstract:
Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h., moved (hijrah) from Mecca al-Mukarramah to Medina al-Munawwarah, then founded the state of Medina by gathering the national strength of the Muslim, Christian and Jewish population with the identity of the Quraish, Auz, and Khazraj tribes. Caliph Ali bin Abi Talib moved the capital of the Rashidah Caliphate from Medina to Kufa, form Arab to the Persian region. Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan chose Damascus as the capital of the Umayyah dynasty. Abu Abbas al-Safah placed the seat of the Abbasid dynasty in Baghdad. Furthermore, the Ottoman Empire had its capital in Istanbul. After turning into the Republic of Turkey, it occupies Ankara as the capital. Planning of moving the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia is from the Province of the Special Capital Region (DKI) Jakarta to the Province of East Kalimantan intended as an effort to equalize development that strengthen togetherness in a sense. The ideological, political, social, cultural and legal foundations serve as the basis of legitimacy in the historical footsteps of the Paser Kingdom and the Kutai Kartanegara Kingdom, as the center of government of the Republic of Indonesia. The theory of development ('umran), urban theory ('urban), and the theory of nationality ('asabiyah) put forward by Ibn Khaldun in the Muqaddimah have become methodological conceptions in studying maritime-based archipelago construction. This research shows the point of the new State Capital (IKN), in the archipelago network from Sabang to Merauke. A blueprint for the nation's journey that covers the dynamics of human resource potential in the natural resource management system of the republic of Indonesia.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of a commented translation of an excerpt from a ninth century C.E. letter by the celebrated Arabic translator Hunayn Ibn Ishaq. The epistle is addressed to one of his patrons, 'Ali ibn Yahya, and gives an account of the works of the Greek physician Galen as well as their translations. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part One provides a historical background to the translation, and is subdivided into two sections: (1) Hunayn Ibn Ishaq (his life, his achievements); (2) Hunayn's fellow translators and patrons mentioned in the epistle. Part Two comprises the Arabic text (Source Text), about 5,000 words, and its English translation (Target Text). Part Three consists of a theoretical discussion of the problems of translating this letter. In the first section of that part, we explain the purpose and style of our translation. We also analyze some of the main differences between Arabic and English textuality (e.g. cohesion), and discuss translation difficulties of different types, namely interpretive (e.g. polysemy) and terminological (e.g. synonymy). In Section Two, we expound Hunayn's own method of research and views on translation. Finally, we summarize the main conclusions that we draw from the epistle, and from its translation. For the convenience of the reader, a glossary of proper names is provided at the beginning of the thesis. We include as appendices three samples from various translations of the letter. Given the different nature of the three parts of this thesis, the bibliographical references are arranged under three headings, each corresponding to a part. An index of names and subjects appears at the very end.

Lee, Jonathan Leonard. "The New Year's festivals and the shrine of Ali Ibn Abi Talib Sy Mazar-I-Sharif, Afghanistan." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/549/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the customs and origins of three spring festivals at the shrine of 'Ali b. Abi Talib, Mazar-i Sharif, Afghanistan; namely Nauroz, Janda Bala and Gul-i Surkh. Since these festivals are not part of the Islamic religious calendar, we seek to locate their origins in the pre-Islamic religions of Iran and record the contemporary traditions of these festivals. Since the festivals are assimilated to a shrine dedicated to the fourth Caliph of Sunni Islam, we examine the processes which gave rise to this juxtaposition and how it came about that this shrine came to be considered a rival to Najaf. The Sa1juq and Timurid discovery narratives are examined (Chapters 1-2) in their wider religious and cultural context, followed by an examination of Afghan folklore related to Nauroz and the pre-Islamic religious traditions of Bactria (Chapters 3-4). We conclude that an important impetus for the founding of this shrine is the fact that, until the arrival of Islam, Bactra had been the paramount pilgrimage and cult centre of the region. Over the millennia, whilst the dominant religious tradition had changed, Bactra adapted to such ideological fluctuations in order to maintain its dominance of the. lucrative pilgrimage traffic. Marginalised by Islam, whose heroes and foci of pilgrimage lay in the Arab world, the alleged discovery of the body of Hazrat 'Ali at the site, provided an acceptable Islamic framework for the revival, or continuation, of indigenous Bactrian New Year customs. Our examination of Gul-i Surkh, or 'Red Rose', festival (chapters 5-6) finds a parallel in the Annenian Vardavar festival. Originally this festival appears to have been derived from a blending of Iranian and Babylonian religion in Bactria, namely the cults of Anahita, Adonistrammuz and custoins associated with the Iranian hero, Siyawush. Janda Bala (Chapter 7), on the other hand, appears to be rooted in ancient Vedic and Shamanistic tradition. All three festivals, though, we argue, also represent different aspects of ancient Indo-Aryan and Babylonian fertility rites connected with the spring and vernal equinox.

Isaacs-Martin, Wendy Jane. "A violent origin : a Girardian analysis of the scapegoating of Ali ibn Abu Talib in Shi'ite tradition." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8197.

Full text
Abstract:

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 182-192).
This dissertation applies Rene Girard's theory of the scapegoat mechanism to prove that Ali ibn Abu Talib appears in Shi'ite traditions as an innocent victim. The aim is to investigate Girard's substantial body of work to determine whether Ali was a scapegoat and a victim of a conspiracy within his community. Girard's theory is founded in mimetic desire, where he incorporated external and internal mediation to form an analysis of mimetic rivalry. Using various texts to develop his theory and support his concepts, he investigated Aristotle, Plato, Stendhal, Proust, Shakespeare and Freud. He developed his theory from the interaction between friends to the incorporation of an object of desire to form the 'French triangle'. He moved from investigating this 'triangle' in personal relationships to conspiracies and subsequently to communities with regard to primitive religions. It was in the discovery of the sacred victim that Girard recognized the purpose of myth, that it concealed the role of the persecutors and that it silenced the victim. Girard then transferred his deductions to analyzing the Bible, where he identified ways in which the text gave the victim a voice. He maintains that only Jesus supported a non-violent position and embraced positive mimetic desire in the form of imitating the love of God. In reviewing Ali's life, one discovers that it reveals Girard's concepts of mimetic rivalry, conspiracy and collective violence. There is the historical Ali and the divine Imam Ali. These two positions can be reconciled by following a constitutive reductionist method for the purpose of analysis in applying the scapegoat mechanism theory. Reductionism is useful and necessary for this study. While the historical Ali reveals a victim, the divine Ali takes responsibility for his own death. The historical and the divine reveal two perspectives in relating Ali's story, one from the victim's perspective and the other from the perspective of the persecutors. However, with respect to the scapegoat mechanism, Shi'ite traditions about Ali, inclusive of historical, popular, or ghulat traditions, show that Jesus was not the only victim to reveal his innocence and embrace non-violence for positive mimesis. Rather, Ali goes further in rejecting materialism to avoid envy, encouraging his community to witness his poverty. Without the distraction of material things, Ali could demonstrate God's love. While Girard claimed that Christianity, particularly the gospels, revealed the victim's innocence in Jesus Christ, Ali brings forth a similar message of imitating the love of God. Like Jesus, he revealed that God was a loving and forgiving God; he was not an angry God that demanded sacrifice.

Sharif, Mohd Farid bin Mohd. "Concept of jihād and baghy in Islamic law : with special reference to Ibn Taymiyya." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8231.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about Ibn Taymiyya's thinking on jihād and baghy. It aims to make an important contribution to the study of early Islamic political thought. It considers how the terms jihād and baghy have developed and been expanded from the structure established by the Qur'an and hadith. It also examines the relationship between jihād and baghy in Islamic law and reveals the pivotal role of the imām in politics. The main focus of this study is Ibn Taymiyya's thinking on jihād and the fatwās that resulted from it, using hitherto overlooked printed materials. It also seeks to explain why Ibn Taymiyya upheld jihād against the Mongols, the Franks and the heretic Shī'a. The thesis is divided into four chapters and structured as follows. The first chapter deals with the life of Ibn Taymiyya. This chapter moves beyond conventional biography to relate the story of Ibn Taymiyya's life to the main events that occurred during the Mongols' incursion. The second chapter identifies what Meccan and Medinan Qur'anic texts say about jihād, and examines whether jihād is a mechanism of self defense or an act of aggression; it also explains the relationship between jihād and the establishment of dār al-Islām, dār al-ḥarb and dār al-'ahd. The third chapter considers Ibn Taymiyya's view on jihād. The fourth chapter analyses Ibn Taymiyya's view on baghy, and aims to arrive at a clearer picture of the relationship between Ibn Taymiyya's concepts of jihād and baghy.

Abstract:
The 60Hz, 165MW gas turbine GT24 and the 50Hz, 240MW gas turbine GT26 are the first two members of ABB’s Sequential Combustion System gas turbine family. These turbines are designed to offer increased output at up to 4% efficiency advantage over today’s engines. Whereas the first combustor is based on the proven EV-combustor technology, an extensive research and development program has been carried out in developing the lean premixed, self-igniting second combustor. This paper reports the basic research work concerning the lean premixing burners with self-ignition. The development of the burner and the combustor was based on wind tunnel and water channel experiments, CFD-calculations and combustion tests at atmospheric and high pressure. Moreover an innovative cooling technology was developed to fullfill all conditions of the self-igniting premix combustor requiring minimal cooling air consumption. Special attention was paid both to a low sensitivity of the cooling effectiveness to variations of the imposed boundary conditions and to a robust hardware construction. Tests of real engine parts at real engine conditions will be demonstrated in detail. Finally the paper demonstrates the potential of the sequential combustion system to reach single digit NOx levels by unveiling the results of the extensive testing program.

Abstract:
With the introduction of the EPA Tier 4 NOx emission limits for rail diesel engines this year, engine developers are forced to implement more advanced emission control technologies such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or cooled external exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The integration and control of these systems for ensuring optimum performance throughout the operating range brings about new challenges on top of the well-known requirement for unconstrained operability in a very wide range of conditions. As a consequence, engines and their subsystems have to be designed for maximum flexibility. The turbocharging system in particular needs to be capable of dealing with extreme ambient conditions associated with high altitudes, hot summers, severe winters, tunnel operation, etc. This flexibility must be achieved without compromising reliability and while ensuring continuous in-use compliance with the emissions standards throughout the life of the installation. At the same time, engine performance should be maintained at the highest level possible. This study demonstrates that all of these targets can be met by combining two-stage turbocharging and EGR with suitable control elements. Two-stage turbocharging, which has become increasingly popular in other industry sectors due to its potential for improving the bsfc / NOx emissions trade-off when used in combination with correspondingly optimized valve actuation (Miller timing), is starting to be adopted also for rail applications. A variety of EGR concepts was proposed or put into practice over the past few years, and the most important or promising of these have been taken into consideration for this study. Extensive simulations of the resulting engine and turbocharging systems have been performed using ABB’s in-house simulation platform, based on a generic engine model that can be considered representative of the rail sector. It is shown that integration of EGR, two-stage turbocharging and appropriate control elements is highly attractive as it offers outstanding operational flexibility and very high fuel efficiency without any compromise in terms of reliability. The selection and specification of control elements and turbocharging system components depends on the EGR concept applied. As is shown below, this can be tailored to the application to ensure optimum performance and flexibility. In view of these obvious benefits, we are very confident that such integrated EGR / two-stage turbocharging systems will be adopted more widely on railway engines.
