The objective of this thesis is the translation of an original defence of Sufī practice titled al- Risālah al-Qawl al-Ma`rūf fī al-Radd `alā man Ankara al-Tasawwuf (A Kind Word in Response to those who Reject Sufism) by the Shaykh Aḥmad ibn Muṣṭafā al-`Alāwī. By translating this text it is hoped to affirm the principle that Sufism is the result of ijtihād (legal reasoning) rather than bid`ah (innovation) and that it therefore forms part of Sunnah. This chapter provides our introduction to the translated text. Section One reviews classical works in defence of the Sufis, as well as secondary sources relied upon by the translator. Section Two provides a description of the life and works of Shaykh Aḥmad ibn Muṣṭafā al- `Alāwī. Section three discusses the legacy of the Shaykh, including the contemporary state of the `Alawiyah Ṭarīqah. Section Four provides a short analysis of some of the written works of the Shaykh. Section Five evaluates the methodology of the Shaykh as a method of ijtihād. Section Six introduces the translated text that follows this chapter. Section Seven outlines the translation strategy that is followed. It also highlights unique problems encountered during translation, such as words with unique meanings and words with nuances and meanings different to that implied by the author.

Abstract:
This thesis is divided into four sections. The first chapter deals with Mamlūk historiography and its major characteristics, alongside an examination of the life al' Aynī's, who was one of the most prominent historians of the period. Special attention is paid to his professions, masters, students as well as his numerous works. Chapter two, on the other hand, focuses on the copies of 'Iqd al-jumān fi tārīkh ahl al-zamān, mentioning the published volumes that covered most of the Ayyūbid and Mamlūk eras. The rest of this chapter deals with the methodology used in the edition of Volume eleven (431-520/1040-1126) as well as demonstrating its importance and sources. Chapter three presents an edition of the Arabic text of Volume eleven. Chapter four is a separate volume, which initially deals with the life and works of the historian Muḥammad b. 'Abd al-Malik al-Hamadhānī. The rest of chapter examines the historical fragments from his lost historical book, called 'Unwān al-siyar fī maḥāsin ahl al-Badū wa'-l Ḥaḍr, also known as Al-Ma'ārif al-muta'akhkhira: these fragments are to be found in Volume eleven of the 'Iqd al-jumān. At the end of this chapter, the Arabic text is reconstructed and its biographical materials, are reorganised in alphabetical order.

Abstract:
Colorectal cancer(CRC) is still one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in the Western countries. Liver metastases (CRLM) are present in nearly 15% to 25% of individuals with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer and will develop in up to 50% of patient during the course of their disease. Radical liver resection remains the only potentially curative therapy for patient with CRLM, with reported 5-and 10 year actuarial survival rates of 17% to 35% and 16% to 23%, respectively. The optimal timing for surgical resection in case of syncronous presentation of primary CRC and liver metastases has long been controversial. This study aimed to determine whether simultaneous radical but conservative IOUS-guided LR and colorectal resection (CRR) are safe and effective in patient with SCRLM. Forty-eight patients received simultaneous colorectal and liver resection. Mean+SD (range) age was 64,2+9,7 (38-84) years. One patient died within 30 p.o. days; overall postoperative mortality was 2,1%. Nine patients (18,8%) developed one or more complications, 4 (8,3%) of grade III-IV sec. Clavien-Dindo and 5 (10,4%) of grade I-II. Duration of surgery was 486,6+144,0 (153-804) minutes. Postoperative hospital stay was11,9+6,6 (6-50) days. This study confirms that simultaneous colorectal and liver resections can be performed safely without significant increase of perioperative morbidity and mortality rates, also in patients undergoing ultralow anterior resection and in those requiring intermittent hepatic pedicle clamping. IOUS guidance is effective in reducing the extension of LR in patients with SCRLM, even in those with bilobar SCRLM. Since major complications are frequent after simultaneous major LR and CRR, reducing the extent of liver parenchyma removal may have a favourable impact on postoperative course. Simultaneous radical but conservative IOUS-guided LR and CRR is a safe and effective in patient with SCRLM and could serve as primary option for selected cases

Full text
Abstract:
Australopithecus afarensis is a fossil hominin species known from at least four East African Rift Valley sites ranging from northern Ethiopia in the north to northern Tanzania in the south and bridging the time period between approximately 3.6 and 3.0 million years ago (Ma). First identified in the late 1970s as the bipedal but craniodentally apelike rootstock from which later Australopithecus and Homo evolved (Johanson et al., 1978; Johanson and White, 1979), A. afarensis constituted the first substantial record of unequivocal human ancestors older than 3.0 million years (Myr). An array of more recently made discoveries have placed A. afarensis in a pivotal position in early hominin phylogeny, bracketed in time between, on the one hand, two temporally successive species, A. anamensis and Ardipithecus ramidus, that jointly extend the hominin record back to 4.4 Ma (M. Leakey et al., 1995, 1998; White et al., 1994, 1995), and, on the other hand, the earliest strong (stratigraphic) evidence for hominin lineage diversification, with the first known records of A. africanus (ca. 2.7 Ma) in southern Africa, and of A. aethiopicus (ca. 2.7 Ma) and A. garhi (2.5 Ma) in eastern Africa (Walker et al., 1986; Asfaw et al., 1999).2 The task of sorting out the relationships among all of these species hinges on the interpretation of A. afarensis itself, from its alpha taxonomy and phylogenetic role to its pattern of evolution over time. A prerequisite to achieving this goal is a more complete knowledge of the A. afarensis fossil record, narrowing gaps in our knowledge of anatomy and variation, as well as of distributions in space and time. On sample size alone, A. afarensis is the best-known hominin species in the eastern African fossil record. The vast majority of fossils in the A. afarensis hypodigm, some 360 specimens, or approximately 90% of the total, have been recovered at the Hadar site, from the 200+ meter sequence of silts, sands, and clays that comprise the Hadar Formation, which is exposed along the drainages of the Awash River in the Afar Depression of northern Ethiopia (Johanson et al., 1982a; Kimbel et al., 1994).

Full text
Abstract:
Pultrusion of thermoset/fiber composites generally consists of pulling continuous rovings and/or continuous glass mats through a resin bath or impregnator and then into preforming fixtures, where the section is partially shaped and excess resin and/or air are removed. Finally, the preformed profiles are pulled through heated dies, where the section is cured continuously (Batch 1989; Meyer 1985; Price 1979; Richard 1986). The pultrusion process is one of the most cost-effective continuous processing techniques for producing thermoset composite materials. The laminating resin may be an unsaturated polyester resin, a vinyl ester resin, or an epoxy resin, but the majority of pultruded thermoset products currently use unsaturated polyester resins. The reason for this is that epoxy resins require high heat inputs and have relatively slow gelation, although some effort has been spent on development of new epoxy resin systems that can be pultruded at speeds comparable with unsaturated polyester resin systems (e.g., 0.6–0.9 m/min). Han and coworkers (Han et al. 1986, Han and Chin 1988) formulated and then solved numerically, via the finite difference method, a system of equations describing the cure kinetics of a thermoset resin and the heat transfer between the resin and the die wall, in order to model the pultrusion process for thermoset/fiber composites. Subsequently, other investigators (Batch and Macosko 1993; Chachad et al. 1995; Gorthala et al. 1994a, 1994b; Ma et al. 1986) reported similar studies. Experimental studies (Batch and Macosko 1993; Chachad et al. 1995; Ma et al. 1986; Price 1979; Price and Cupschalk 1984; Roux et al. 1998) on the pultrusion process for thermoset/fiber composites have also been reported. Some research groups (Aström and Pipes 1993; Larock et al. 1989; Ma and Chen 1991; Ruan and Liu 1994) have investigated the pultrusion process of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymers. While there are some similarities between the pultrusion of thermoset/fiber composites and fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymers, the most important difference between the two lies in that the former involves chemical reactions during processing, whereas the latter does not.

Abstract:
During the Middle Miocene through the Pliocene the Appalachian Mountains underwent continued erosion and approached modern elevations. The Rocky Mountains had undergone uplift to half or more of their present elevation during the Late Cretaceous to Middle Eocene Laramide Revolution; after a lull during the Middle Eocene through the Early Miocene, there was increased tectonic activity beginning ~12 Ma and especially between 7 and 4 Ma. Locally some highlands may have approached or attained modern elevations. The increasingly high mountains and plateaus of Asia and North America deflected the major air streams southward, bringing colder polar air into the middle latitudes of North America. An extensive Antarctic ice sheet further cooled ocean waters and contributed to the spread of seasonally dry climates. The elimination of most of the Asian exotics from the North American flora dates to the Late Miocene-Pliocene as a result of a decline in summer rainfall. The Sierra Nevada attained about two-thirds of their present elevation within the past 10 Ma. They were appreciably elevated at ~5 Ma, stood at ~2100 m at 3 Ma, and have risen ~950 m since 3 Ma (Huber, 1981). The California Coast Ranges and Cascade Mountains attained significant heights by 3 Ma, and there was a rapid rise of the Alaska Range at ~6 Ma. Temperatures increased between ~18 and 16 Ma. In the absence of major plate reorganization and intense volcanic activity and with increased erosion from continued replacement of the dense evergreen forest by deciduous forest and shrubland (increasing albedo), atmospheric CO2 concentration decreased and a sharp lowering of temperature occurred in the Middle Miocene between 15 and 10 Ma. Eolian dust deposits increased in the Late Cenozoic, suggesting greater aridity (Rea et al., 1985). This is supported by kaolinite records from North Atlantic deep sea sediments (Chamley, 1979). At ~4.8~4.9 Ma global cooling and a marine regression of ~40~50 m combined to isolate the Mediterranean Basin from the ocean and to concentrate large volumes of salt as water evaporated. The biota was destroyed, giving rise to the term Messinian salinity crisis.

Abstract:
The French Uplands were built by the Hercynian orogenesis. The French Massif Central occupies one-sixth of the area of France and shows various landscapes. It is the highest upland, 1,886 m at the Sancy, and the most complex. The Vosges massif is a small massif, quite similar to the Schwarzwald in Germany, from which it is separated by the Rhine Rift Valley. Near the border of France, Belgium, and Germany, the Ardennes upland has a very moderate elevation. The largest part of this massif lies in Belgium. Though Brittany is partly made up of igneous and metamorphic rocks, it cannot be truly considered as an upland; in the main parts of Brittany, altitudes are lower than in the Parisian basin. Similarities of the landscape in the French and Belgian Uplands derive from two major events: the Oligocene rifting event and the Alpine tectonic phase. The Vosges and the Massif Central are located on the collision zone of the Variscan orogen. In contrast, the Ardennes is in a marginal position where primary sediments cover the igneous basement. Four main periods are defined during the Hercynian orogenesis (Bard et al. 1980; Autran 1984; Ledru et al. 1989; Faure et al. 1997). The early Variscan period corresponds to a subduction of oceanic and continental crust and a highpressure metamorphism (450–400 Ma) The medio- Variscan period corresponds to a continent–continent collision of the chain (400–340 Ma). Metamorphism under middle pressure conditions took place and controlled the formation of many granite plutons: e.g. red granites (granites rouges), porphyroid granite, and granodiorite incorporated in a metamorphic complex basement of various rocks. The neo-Variscan period (340–320 Ma) is characterized by a strong folding event: transcurrent shear zones affected the units of the previous periods and the first sedimentary basins appeared. At the end of this period, late-Variscan (330–280 Ma), autochthonous granites crystallized under low-pressure conditions related to a post-collision thinning of the crust. Velay and Montagne Noire granites are the main massifs generated by this event. Sediment deposition in tectonic basins during Carboniferous and Permian times occurred in the Massif Central and the Vosges: facies are sandstone (Vosges), shale, coal, and sandstone in several Stephanian basins of the Massif Central, with red shale and clay ‘Rougier’ in the south-western part of the Massif Central.
