Abstract:
Literary translation is a type of translation, which requires a great commitment in realizing it. The differences that may be shared by the SL and TL make translation as a process a complicated and challenging one, especially when it comes to literary text translation. The messages, emotions and culture that the literature of a language shares sometimes seem almost difficult to be passed from one language to another one. This is a consequence of differences that the two different languages share in their construction and in their culture. This paper has been focused on the problems of equivalence while dealing with Albanian literary text translation to English, carried out by Albanian university students who study English Language and Literature. Empirical and qualitative are the research methods that have been used in this scientific paper. All these methods have verified the three hypotheses of this research as well as have found the answers to the questions on this research. In addition, the results reached from the three aforementioned research methods have helped in achieving the objectives and aims of this paper. The corpora that has been used in this research is the Albanian literary texts: “Ajkuna qan Omerin” from Kangë Kreshnikësh (Kreshink’s Songs). The text has been translated by Albanian students that study English Language and Literature at the University of Gjakova “Fehmi Agani”, Faculty of Philology, department of English language and Literature and at University of Prizren “Ukshin Hoti”, Faculty of Philology, department of English language and Literature. The translated versions were used as primary source materials for analysis. Another instrument used in this research is the questionnaire, consisting of two open-ended questions. One question aimed at identifying difficulties or challenges that students might have or face during their translation, whereas the second question asked them about the solutions that they might find when dealing with difficulties or challenges during Albanian literary text translation. Thus, the problems of equivalence during Albanian literary texts translation have been identified based on the analysis of students’ translation, and on their responses regarding difficulties or challenges that they faced or had during text translations. The work presents the most common strategies used by Albanian students during the process of literary text translation from Albanian into English.

Abstract:
This article for the first time proposes a methodological bridge between comparative and historical linguistics, classical philology (on the one hand) and ethnomusicology (on the other hand). Thus, it is possible to verify the results obtained independently in various fields of humanities of the 20th century. The present article compares rhythmical patterns of songs with explicit ritual use from different ethnic groups speaking Indo-European languages (Slavic, Baltic, Greek, Albanian, Iranian, and others). In these songs, there are two main types of stable rhythm patterns (0101/0100 and 011/010) which correlate with two main types of Indo-European poetic metrical patterns independently reconstructed by Indo-European linguistics. It suggests that folk songs preserved a range of possible Indo-European rhythmic patterns, even though languages have changed prosodic properties over time. The present study follows the track of previous studies, which showed partial parallels in Baltic, Slavic-Balcan, and Indo-Aryan song patterns, which loans could not explain. Further analysis of rhythmic patterns revealed their connections with prosodic and syntactic properties of Indo-European sentence. Relative rhythmic complexity of possible Indo-European musical idiom may be correlated to the rhythmic complexity of textiles that may be connected to some Indo-European speaking ethnic groups. The parallels outside the Indo-European cultural range show possible Uralic and Caucasian components of Indo-European musical idiom, which may indicate components of ethnogenesis of Indo-European ethnic groups. Thus ethnomusicology may be regarded as an independent source for studying prehistory, along with linguistics, archeology, and genetics. Though proposed in the 20th century by B. Bartok, V. Goshovsky, G. Luko, this program of ethnomusicological research has not yet been implemented.

Abstract:
This study collected students' viewpoints about the impact of mass media on their English language learning in higher education in Albania. Their perspectives hold significance for professors to enhance their future educational experience. The study used a questionnaire that was designed and distributed via Google Forms during the academic year in 2022 and 2023. Study participants were 56 students enrolled in the two study programs: a three-year bachelor’s study program in "English Language" and a two-year Professional master's study program for "English Teachers" within the Department of Foreign Languages at the Faculty of Education and Philology at "Fan S. Noli" University, Korҫa, Albania. Most participants used mass media to improve their English language learning. Additionally, students who used various types of mass media had a more extensive vocabulary, were more fluent in English, had higher levels of motivation, and a more positive outlook about learning the English language. Mass media transformed students from dependent passive learners to active independent learners.

Abstract:
"Franz Nopcsa, a polymath who was a founder of palaeophysiology, in addition to making great contributions on palaeontology, geography, philology and Balkan ethnography with a special focus on Albania. Coming from an aristocratic family in Transylvania, he was one of the first palaeobiologists, promoted the idea of tectonic plate movement and what is now known as the island rule, in addition to discovering 25 reptile genera and five dinosaurs. He was, however, a difficult personality with a rudeness and arrogance that antagonised many colleagues and left him marginalised. Nopcsa spent long periods in Albania, then a wild and isolated country for the West, staying with the hill people of Shkodra and travelling widely, making him a leading ethologist and expert on the languages, culture and tribal law. Nopsca challenged conventional attitudes towards sex as well, having a relationship with Bajazid Doda, which lasted till the end of their lives. Nopcsa’s financially-comfortable life ended after World War 1 and it was a struggle to support himself after that. Nevertheless, he continued to travel and put out publications. Unwell, struggling financially and depressed, on 25 April 1933 he killed Doda and himself, leaving a suicide note. Franz Nopcsa came from the last days of the Habsburg Empire with so many other radiant talents. He was one of the last ‘gifted amateurs’ who adapted poorly to the new classless world of professional academics, but his phenomenal creativity and output should not be forgotten."

Abstract:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have impacted education by introducing new methods of teaching and learning. However, while there are some studies that highlight the role and impact of ICT in the educational system, there is little research on the use of ICT for pedagogical purposes in Albania. To address this gap, this study elaborates on ICT use for pedagogical purposes specifically in secondary schools in Albania. It investigates the relationship between ICT inclusion in teaching and the degree to which these factors are reflected in the education system. To do so, the study combines qualitative data from curricular frameworks, school textbooks, and the National Education Strategy with quantitative data from surveys of first-year students of the Faculty of History and Philology, Tirana University. Hence, the research focuses on descriptive analyses of students’ opinions gathered through questionnaires and detailed analyses of the qualitative key documents: education strategies, curriculum framework and textbooks. The findings reveal that ICT use in the teaching and learning process (as a medium) is at a low level, while it is well established as an object of a course or as an aspect of a profession. Moreover, the results contribute to past research on the educational system and use of technologies in pedagogy by suggesting several barriers to effective ICT utilization for educational purposes. Such barriers include inadequate technological resources, limited availability of digital content in the native language, and restricted student internet access within school premises. Additional challenges are related to the overreliance on print textbooks, and the dominant role of teachers as the primary or sole source of knowledge and information. Finally, this study contributes to research on educational technology and pedagogy by emphasizing the urgent need for improvements in textbooks, comprehensive teacher training programs, and the adoption of contemporary pedagogical methodologies to foster critical thinking skills among the younger generation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The south of Ukraine is known for its ethnographic diversity. In the north and north-west parts of the Black Sea region, Albanians, Bulgarians, Gagauzes, Greeks, Moldovans, and Russians who were compactly settled among Ukrainians, who still communicate in their native languages, celebrate traditional holidays, and adhere to customary ritual practices. Therefore, the regional population history and culture must study, disseminate and protect this universal heritage, and as an object and subject it requires careful scientific study made by professional specialists whose training is carried out in university lecture halls This article deals with the history of the formation of ethnography as a science and academic discipline before the creation of the Department of Geography and Ethnography. The source is the Protocols of the Council of the Imperial Novorossiya University, according to which we can trace the evolution of awareness of how important is to have folk studies as a science and educational aspect at the University, taking into consideration its role in educational, scientific and social activities of the region. In the first half of the 19th century the interest in folk studies keeps growing among the intelligentsia, periodicals, in particular the Odesskiy Vestnik. The study of folklife culture is became one of the main tasks of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities. Eventually, in 1882, the introduction of the folk study academic discipline into the educational process at Novorossiya University appeared as a separate issue. The establishment of the Department of Historical Geography was proposed. The proposal was supported and in 1884 the Department of Geography and Ethnography appeared at the Faculty of History and Philology.

Franklin, Sebastian. "The major and the minor on political aesthetics in the control society." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2010. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/2372/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the crucial diagnostic and productive roles that the concepts of minor and major practice, two interrelated modes of cultural production set out by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Kafka: toward a Minor Literature (1975), have to play in the present era of ubiquitous digital technology and informatics that Deleuze himself has influentially described as the control society. In first establishing the conditions of majority and majority, Deleuze and Guattari's historical focus in Kafka is the early twentieth century period of Franz Kafka's writing, a period which, for Deleuze, marks the start of a transition between two types of society – the disciplinary society described by Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish and the control society that is set apart by its distribution, indifferent technical processes and the replacement of the individual with the dividual in social and political thought. Because of their unique conceptual location, at the transition between societies, the concepts of majority and minority present an essential framework for understanding the impact of ubiquitous digital technology and informatics on cultural production in the twentieth century and beyond. In order to determine the conditions of contemporary major and minor practice across the transition from disciplinary to control societies, the thesis is comprised of two interconnecting threads corresponding to majority and minority respectively. Drawing on the theoretical work of Deleuze and Guattari, Friedrich Kittler and Fredric Jameson alongside pioneering figures in the historical development of computation and informatics (Alan Turing, Claude Shannon and others), material observation on the technical function of digital machines, and the close examination of emblematic cultural forms, I determine the specific conditions of majority that emerge through the development of the contemporary control era. Alongside this delineation of the conditions of majority I examine the prospective tactics, corresponding to the characteristics of minority set out by Deleuze and Guattari in Kafka, which emerge as a contemporary counter-practice within the control-era. This is carried out through the close observation of key examples of cultural production in the fields of literature, film, video, television and the videogame that manifest prospective tactics for a control-era minor practice within the overarching technical characteristics of the control-era major. Through an examination of these interrelated threads the thesis presents a framework for both addressing the significant political and cultural changes that ubiquitous computation effects in constituting the contemporary control society and determining the ways in which these changes can be addressed and countered through cultural production.

Warth-Szczyglowska, Magdalena Malgorzata. "Colour and semantic change : a corpus-based comparison of English green and Polish zielony." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2014. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/5690/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of my research is to investigate the processes and mechanisms of semantic change in two basic colour terms: green in English and zielony in Polish. My research methodology focuses on existing English and Polish corpora, namely the British National Corpus, the Corpus of Contemporary American English and the National Corpus of Polish. I analyze my data both synchronically and diachronically (comparing two periods of time: 1985-1994, 2001-2010). My study also evaluates the use of corpus evidence for the purpose of investigating the processes of semantic change. Various factors have caused the Basic Colour Terms (BCTs) green and zielony to form metaphorical and metonymical meanings that have been conventionalised in English and Polish respectively. These processes have long played an important role in our understanding of the surrounding world. Investigating semantic changes in these two colour terms and two periods of time is key to my cross-cultural research, and this entails answering the questions: Why do green and zielony develop different senses? What are the similarities and differences between these two colour terms? How have these two terms developed and might they develop new senses in future? Are metonymy and metaphor the only mechanisms of semantic change in green and zielony? The semantic change of each colour term is shown through a network of meanings, where all the different meanings of green and zielony are presented together with their stages of development in the form of codes. Additionally each stage is a separate prototype. The aim of the network is to show the etymological prototype and various senses (new prototypes) developing from this original sense. Moreover the number of occurrences of each prototype might indicate which meaning or meanings are most common or even central in a given language at a certain point in time. The network of meanings is a visual representation of semantic change and processes involved in it. A very detailed analysis of corpus examples provides an insight into the uses of green and zielony in English and Polish respectively. The data are analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Such an approach offers a thorough analysis of the two terms in question.

Wheeler, Louise. "A linguistic ethnographic perspective on Kazakhstan's trinity of languages : language ideologies and identities in a multilingual university community." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7812/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a linguistic ethnographic study of language ideologies and identities in a multilingual, university community in Kazakhstan: a university aspiring to put Kazakhstan’s ‘Trinity of Languages’ project, aimed at developing societal tri-lingualism in Kazakh, Russian and English, into practice. Data was collected at a Kazakhstani university from 2012 to 2013, combining participant-observation and fieldnotes, audio recordings and interviews. Drawing on the concept of heteroglossia (Bakhtin 1981), the research investigates how young people draw on ideologies of separate and flexible multilingualism (Blackledge and Creese 2010) and on the often contested indexicalities of Kazakh, Russian and English linguistic resources to negotiate identities as multilingual people in Kazakhstan, particularly in contexts of performance, and stance-taking. Consideration of these ideological and linguistic resources also sheds light on Kazakhstan’s wider ‘processes of ideological transformation’ (Smagulova 2008:195) and their real-life implications for multilingual people. Furthermore, the analysis highlights how participants construct stances towards translanguaging (Garcia 2009) and suggests that acts of contextualisation, which frame interactions as being more or less ‘on-stage’ or ‘off-stage’, shape the way that speakers draw on linguistic resources and their indexical meanings, and how these contexts can afford or constrain speaker agency in the negotiation of identities.

Ogrodniczuk, Maciej. "Weryfikacja korpusu wypowiedników polskich (z wykorzystaniem gramatyki formalnej Świdzińskiego)." Thesis, 2006. https://bc.klf.uw.edu.pl/30/1/MO06-dr.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
W pracy dokonana została wieloaspektowa weryfikacja korpusu wypowiedników polskich Marka Świdzińskiego - bazy zdań i oznajmień z naniesioną charakterystyką i strukturą składnikową jednostek elementarnych.
