Abstract:
Albany Bulb, a former landfill, is a thirty-one-acre battleground for the Bay Area’s competing progressive movements for social justice, environmental conservation, and politically engaged art. Street protest, lawsuits, regulatory jockeying, anarchist camp-ins, and art have all been deployed in the name of saving this oddball spit of land from and for its users of many species. Drawing from information collected over sixteen years of visits to the Bulb, including scores of hours of interviews beginning in 2013, this essay brings together work from an interdisciplinary team of UC Berkeley students and Bulb residents to apply techniques of ethnography, contemporary archaeology, oral history, participatory mapping, mobile apps, botany, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning to the study of the Bulb.

Bino, Blerjana. "Policy Discourse on Marginalised Youth in Albania: The Constraints of the ‘Normalisation’ and ‘Integration’ Policy Approaches for Inclusive Education." European Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies 4, no. 4 (January 21, 2017): 85. http://dx.doi.org/10.26417/ejms.v4i4.p85-87.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper addresses the complex phenomenon of marginalised youth and particularly children in street situation in the Albanian contemporary society. Through a qualitative methodology of critical discourse analysis, the paper investigates the most relevant policy documents on inclusive education for marginalised youth in Albania. The paper is interested in exploring the conceptualisation of marginalised youth, specifically children in street situation, as embedded in policy documents, action plans and intervention programmes for inclusive education. The intention here is to discover the explicit and implicit themes of the policy discourse on marginalised youth in Albania and the how it impacts the approaches adopted by the government to address the phenomenon. The critical discourse analysis on policy framework shows that the discourse on marginalised youth in the public sphere (re)produces and reinforces already existing aspects of social deprivation, marginalization and discrimination. The research shows that there are limited efforts to elaborate the concepts of ‘marginalised youth’ and ‘children in street situation’ and that there is confusion in policy regarding the use of the terms. In addition, children in street situation are seen either as victims of socio-economic hardship and endangered by their presence in the spaces of the ‘street’ or as a possible threat to the rest of the society, i.e. the street criminalises children. The research shows two main policy approaches: (i) correctional or repressive-oriented policy approach that conceives ‘street children’ as a danger to public order whose features differentiate from mainstream childhood and as such invites intervention programmes that tend to ‘normalise’ children; (ii) protective or rehabilitative policy approaches, i.e. emphasising children needs and aiming at protecting and re-integrating them in family and mainstream society. The paper takes a critical stance on the current policy discourse and the consequent policy approaches of ‘normalisation’ and ‘integration’ and argues for a reconceptualization of children in street situation as social actors based on the notion of childhood as socially constructed. It is thus necessary to link research on the socialisation processes, identity construction and resilience of marginalised youth in the spaces of the street based on their dynamic lifestyles and perspectives with policy development.

Heywood, Loria-Mae. "Before Saying “I Do”: Legal and Policy Considerations for Facilitating Clarity on Human Trafficking and the Protection of Children in Albania." Violence and Victims 35, no. 3 (June 1, 2020): 285–306. http://dx.doi.org/10.1891/vv-d-19-00067.

Abstract:
Data available on victims of human trafficking in Albania does not appear to point to a significant problem of human trafficking in the country. For example, from the years 2016 to 2018, 61 persons were officially determined to be victims of human trafficking, in a context where the average population for that period was 2,871,978 persons. However, beneath this representation of an ostensible average level of trafficking in Albania are signs which seem to be suggestive of a more serious problem in the country. Reports, for example, indicate that authorities have sometimes associated trafficking with a transnational element, while challenges have continued to be posed to the identification of those involved in forced begging, particularly unaccompanied children, street children, and children crossing borders. In addition to highlighting and assessing evident challenges that exist in the identification of real and potential victims of trafficking and the gaps that exist in the protection of children and vulnerable groups in law and in practice, this report provides clarity on the meaning of human trafficking and what could be done to provide a clearer picture of victims of trafficking in Albania. As Albania is being considered for accession negotiations in respect of entry into the European Union, the time is opportune to address challenges and gaps to the prevention and response to trafficking particularly given the European Commission's concerns on human trafficking and child trafficking in Albania.

Abstract:
This study provides a preliminary investigation of the home range and habitat selection of the Australian water rat (Hydromys chrysogaster) in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve near Albany, Western Australia. Six individuals were captured (trap success 1.9%) from 810 trap-nights. This low number suggests that the water rat population in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve is much smaller than anecdotal evidence would suggest. Home-range size (neighbour-linkage method) averaged 18.9 ha (±11.6). Individuals preferentially utilised wetland habitats characterised by dense, low-lying vegetation (0–30 cm from ground), low-density canopy cover and shallow, narrow water bodies.

Abstract:
In 2016, the Albanian constitution underwent the most comprehensive constitutional reform since its adoption in 1998. One of the purposes of this reform was to transform the judicial system in Albania in order to detach it from corruption. One of the novelties of the reform was the vetting process of judges and prosecutors at all levels, including judges of the Albanian Constitutional Court. Following termination of mandates of some of the members to the Court, dismissals, and resignations in the context of the vetting process, Albania’s Constitutional Court did not function for more than a year. Although indisputably the constitutional reform and more specifically vetting were designed as a means of guaranteeing the rule of law, it seems that they were contributing factors to the stalemate within the Constitutional Court, thus ultimately undermining the rule of law. This chapter unfolds this paradox in Albania, an EU candidate country.

This chapter outlines the issues for decision in December 1912-early 1913, at the peace conferences for which Sir Edward Grey had offered London as venue. These were, for Venizelos 1) the future of Salonika, 2) the fate of the Aegean islands, still claimed by Turkey, and 3) Albania/Northern Epirus. The chapter describes the division of the negotiations into two, one between the Balkan allies and Turkey, the second a conference of ambassadors to deal with other issues including the Aegean islands and Albania/Northern Epirus. Streit, Skouloudis, Metaxas and Danglis took part in the London talks, but Venizelos would not include Ion Dragoumis, who opposed Venizelos's conciliatory policy towards Bulgaria and hopes of a Balkan federation.

Abstract:
The authors reconstruct biological stress patterns in pre-Hispanic urban settings at Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico (ca. 150 B.C.–650 A.D.) and at Monte Alban in the Valley of Oaxaca (ca. 100 B.C.–A.D. 500). Archaeologically identified rank (via burial location, mortuary elaboration, and settlement pattern data) was reduced into two broad categories—high and low social status. Odds ratio analyses revealed no difference in overall health patterns by status or sex. In other comparisons, higher status individuals appear to have been buffered against various forms of stress. Overall, Storey and coauthors demonstrate potential expressions of “osteological paradox” outcomes, in that social status and health in urban societies is a complex affair: intervening factors (population density, nutrition, and hygiene) structured by an urban setting can crosscut social strata and exert more influence on health than social organization alone.

Abstract:
In the digital era, where everything seems to move at the speed of light, unfortunately certain regions and countries are limited by economic, political, social, or cultural circumstances, as is the case for Venezuela. New technologies are particularly fundamental in the educational field, and every day Venezuelan students need to deal with the second worst Internet in the world (according to a study conducted by Speedtest in 2019), sporadic blackouts, a hyperinflation that makes almost impossible to upgrade equipment, and all the stress and trauma that come along. Despite these challenges, at the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB), ranked number one in the country, a class of communications students were assigned a crucial task: take a joint 100% online Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program with students from the State University of New York (SUNY) located in Albany, United States. The final product was a meta-documentary, while the real outcome was an enriching cross-cultural experience. This chapter complements Jiménez and Kressner’s (this volume) chapter, and presents the learner voice from UCAB.

Abstract:
This chapter includes application of recent research on the repair and strengthening of historical structures and provides a structural assessment of five historical mosques in Albania. Apart from visual inspection, terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data are used to analyze the historical structures. The FEM analysis conducted in SAP2000 aims to investigate the structural behavior of the undamaged model under static and dynamic loads. Stress concentration and mode period results have a considerable difference, which highlights earthquake vulnerability and changes the strategy of possible retrofitting. As a result, possible practical solutions for the structural problems based on previous research and enhancement of the existing structural resistance are suggested.

In ASME 1997 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exhibition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/97-gt-102.

Full text
Abstract:
During the design process of compressor and turbine blades the investigation of flutter phenomena becomes increasingly important since higher load and better efficiency are desired. As an improvement on the numerical analysis and prediction of unsteady flow through turbomachine cascades with vibrating blades a time accurate Navier Stokes code for S1-stream surfaces SAFES1 is presented within the scope of this paper. To validate the code, numerical results for sub- and transonic test cases of a turbine and a compressor cascade are compared with experimental data. Their good agreement and comparison with Euler calculations show the necessity to take into account viscous effects. To cope with shock waves and areas of separation in laminar or turbulent flow, the fully non linearized Navier Stokes equations are solved using an algebraic turbulence model by Baldwin and Lomax. An approximative upwind flux difference splitting scheme suggested by Roe is implemented. Third order spatial accuracy can be achieved by the MUSCL technique in conjunction with a TVD scheme and a flux limiter by van Albada. By applying either an explicit or an implicit scheme the algorithm can give second order temporal accuracy. The implicit scheme exactly describes the time dependent solution by following a Newton subiteration for every time step. The blades are discretized in a single passage by a C- or O-type grid. The harmonic motion of the blades is bending or torsion or both simultaneously in a non-rotating or rotating frame of reference. For the chosen mode of oscillation the time dependent axial and circumferential blade forces are determined as well as the resulting moment and damping coefficient. To handle a phaseshift between the motion of the blades a direct store method is used. For the unsteady grid movement a fast grid generation is performed in the core region.

Abstract:
Bovilla reservoir is the main source of water supply for around 1 million inhabitants in Tirana, the capital of Albania. The reservoir was created in 1998 from Bovilla Dam and belongs to the upper part of the Terkuza River catchment. The dam previously was planned in a smaller size for irrigation purposes. Intense erosion due to large deforestations followed by increasing nutrient run-off from cultivated land is a challenge for the Bovilla Dam management authority because it is influencing the water quality in daily use and decreasing the dam lifespan in long term. Zall Bastari stream transports high amounts of solid materials. Other streams show also a strong torrential character, after rainfall events the water level suddenly rises which leads to massive erosion. Daily meteorological parameters and 30 meters Digital Terrain Model is used together with Land Cover Map in the HEC-HSM hydrological model which is designed to simulate the complete hydrologic processes of watershed systems, including the erosion and sediment transport. The lack of water level and discharge data made impossible the calibration of the hydrological model. The creation of a new data series for the daily discharges was crucial for further analyzes of the sediment transport and accumulation into the reservoir. Bovilla basin has been divided into many sub-basins in order to better calculate the inflow at the reservoir. The lack of previous bathymetric data caused the usage of alternative ways to calculate total accumulated sediment into the reservoir instead of the classical way in lifespan analysis. The characteristics of the sediment in the sub-basins and in the riverbed have been defined through gradation curves got from some available data. Sediment yield has been evaluated based on the conditions of the previous 21 years, from the construction of the dam in 1996 to nowadays. The old storage curve has been interpolated to be compared with the one defined after the survey specifically done in 2017. The analysis was very important to understand the way haw are accumulated sediment into the reservoir but also their distribution through the reservoir bed.
