Full textThe purpose of this research is to investigate the conformation of the Republican discourse of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and Juan Bautista Alberdi in the Chilean press during their exile between 1841 and 1852. The questions that concern to it are about: evaluate how was the impact of the Chilean experience in its various dimensions in the authors writing process and specifically in the development of its political discourse; understand the past of each one in relation with the Prata region; reflect about how the projects each one proposed to Argentina are specifically affected by this passage by Chile and their involvement with the press.

Full textThis thesis points to study Alberdi’s thought and to demonstrate that it’s fundamentally a thought of the complexity of the categories founded on the hybrid character of the order which is contemporary to him. Alberdi inherited the legacy of two cultures, the traditional culture of Ancien Régime and a revolutionary culture whose language also imposed itself with the independance. The major question for Alberdi is which order to give back to the social body since it lost the legitimacy of the Ancien Régime’s transcendent order. The traditional historiography often pick up Alberdi’s figure and speeches to convert him in the eminent precursor or representative of distinct tendencies, sometimes contradictories, and especially to promote him as the « modernity »’s, the contemporary liberalism’s and the contemporary Argentinian State’s figurehead. Quite the contrary, Alberdi is still rather immerged in the traditional legal culture, and he tries to adapt the availables languages to his reality, in permanent backs and forths between reality and speeches since the first models the seconds and viceversa. Some categories like « individual », « Liberty », « administration » imposed themselves with the Revolution but the publicist gives them another significations (je ne sais pas comment traduire “resémantiser”?) according to his context considerably penetrated with traditional dynamics. The « individual », so, intersects the excluding category of the « vecino » overall. In the same way, Alberdi preferentially uses the term of « administration » in its old meaning of « justice’s administration », not in its modern acceptation. Besides, the publicist’s « modernity » is to be reconsiderated seeing as he leaves a fundamental role to the traditional legal sources and doesn’t fall into legal voluntarism but occasionally and cautiously. He actually plays on different scales : he speaks the political modernity’s language on the national scale and the traditional legal’s one on the local level (local level which remains the stability base of the social body). My thesis is that this traditional base on one hand and the categories of « trade » (understood in his polysemic acceptations) and « political economics » on the other hand will be the two fundamental instruments which enable the autor to rethink the link, to create a society based on the traditional social body. Far from considerating the order on the very national level, his approach also fits into an international perspective : the pacified exchanges between the nations would be the only way to end the atlantic revolutions’s cycle and to recover an order : this order will admittedly be immanent, but it necessarily will transcend the national frame

Full textEstuda o pensamento político de Juan Bautista Albrerdi (1810-1884), um dos principais intelectuais da América Hispânica, membro da chamada Geração de 37. Destaca os seguintes aspectos dos escritos dessa geração: os argumentos que compunham o chamado 'conceito genético da ação', a importância da religião cristã e a crítica ao governo de Juan Manuel de Rosas. Analisa a obra Bases, ressaltando os seguintes princípios: a importância da imigração para a educação das massas; liberdade civil para o desenvolvimento industrial e comercial do país; liberdade política limitada e a nessecidade de um executivo forte. Refuta a interpretação que entende o pensamento hispano-americano como um 'desvio' do liberalismo europeu, estabelecendo um paralelo entre o pensamento de Alberdi com o de liberais europeus, como Montesquieu e Adam Smith. Em seguida, analisa a obra El crimen de la guerra, onde Alberdi propõe a criação de um povo-mundo a partir do comércio e dos princípios morais do cristianismo. Ressalta a presença da religião cristã no liberalismo clássico, a fim de demonstrar que isso não é um elemento específico do pensamento de Alberdi.

O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar de que maneira Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810 – 1884) opera os conceitos de República e Pueblo através de seus textos literários, as peças de teatro La Revolución de Mayo: cronica dramática e El Gigante Amapolas y sus formidables enemigos, escritas entre 1839 e 1841. Como é perceptível em outros membros da Geração de 1837, Alberdi trabalhava com uma fronteira bastante tênue entre literatura e política, fazendo de suas peças verdadeiros combates ao governo de Juan Manuel de Rosas. São tratadas as especificidade do gênero teatral, através da análise de sua relevância para a sociedade bonaerense da primeira metade do oitocentos, levando em conta a o controle que o governo tinha em relação ao contudo das apresentações, utilizado como propaganda pro rosista pelo aparato institucional dos periódicos. Nesse sentido, Alberdi representava a parcela de opositores ao regime que conseguia fazer do teatro um instrumento de crítica ao sistema. Além disso, os textos citados apresentam os ideais republicanos do jovem escritor e de que maneira categorias como povo, cidadão e pátria eram manipuladas de acordo com os diferentes grupos aos quais Alberdi se dirigia ao longo das falas.
The objective of this dissertation is to analyse how Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810 – 1884) operates the concepts of Republic and Pueblo through his literary texts, the plays La Revolución de Mayo: cronica dramática and El Gigante Amapolas y sus formidables enemigos, wrote between 1839 and 1841. As is noticeable in other members of the Generation of 1837, Alberdi had work with a very thin frontier between literature and politics, making part of his opposition to the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas. The specificity of the theatrical genre is treated through the analysis of its relevance to the society of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the eight hundred, taking into account the control that the government had within the spectacles, used as marketing pro rosista by the institutional apparatus of the journals. Alberdi represented the share of opponents of the regime that could make the theater an instrument to criticize the system. Moreover, the texts cited how the republican ideals of the young writer, and how categories such as people, citizenand patria were handled in accordance with the different groups witn whom Alberdi was directed speeking along the lines.

Full textEsta dissertação pretende analisar o conceito de civilização em Juan Bautista Alberdi e Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, enfatizando as ressignificações que eles realizam desde a entrada da Geração de 1837 no jogo político, até o início da década de 1850 – quando disputaram qual seria o melhor projeto para civilizar e organizar a incipiente nação argentina. A hipótese principal desenvolvida aqui é a de uma crescente aproximação entre os conceitos nação e civilização; afinal os projetos nacionais-civilizatórios, idealizados por aqueles intelectuais, traziam a novidade da possibilidade de transformar o que consideravam um deserto de sociabilidade em uma civilização que, se ainda estaria inicialmente em um patamar inferior ao Europeu, era pensada cada vez mais como passível de ser transformada em uma nação civilizada.
This dissertation intends to analyze the concept of civilization in Juan Bautista Alberdi and Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, emphasizing the ressignifications they both realize since the Generation of 37 took its part on the political struggle, until the 1850´s – when these intellectuals disputed which project was the best to civilize and organize the emerging Argentine nation. The main hypothesis developed throughout the dissertation is about a growing approach between the concepts nation and civilization; the national and civilizational projects idealized by those intellectuals brought – for the very first time – the possibility of transforming what they saw as a desert of nonexistent sociability into a civilization that, if it was still at a lower level than the European, was more and more perceived as an Argentine civilization, which could be transformed into a civilized nation.

Full textEm 1853 foi sancionada a Constitución Nacional de la República Argentina, responsável pelo princípio da organização do Estado argentino. Juan Bautista Alberdi, intelectual e jurista tucumano, influenciou diretamente no conteúdo constitucional ao elaborar uma obra - Bases y Puntos de partida para la organización política de la República Argentina – cujo conteúdo contemplava a organização do Estado nacional. Para Alberdi, a Constituição deveria expressar as necessidades do país, e em sua ótica a Argentina necessitava de população, uma vez que possuía grande extensão territorial e poucos habitantes. Propunha, com isso, leis que incentivavam a chegada de imigrantes, que além de povoar também seriam responsáveis pelo progresso material da Argentina, que ocorreria a partir do momento em que pessoas oriundas de “civilizações superiores” fossem habitar o país e transmitissem para a população local os seus “costumes avançados”. Em outras palavras, Alberdi incentivava a imigração européia para a Argentina. Porém, o jurista afirmava que não haveria imigração e progresso material sem estabilidade e ordem política, pois desde o processo de independência, crises e conflitos políticos atrapalhavam o desenvolvimento e a consolidação da Argentina; por isso, em Bases..., o tucumano também propõem uma organização política voltada para a estabilização do país e que contemple e incentive o imigração e o progresso material. Neste trabalho pretendemos analisar como a proposta de povoamento da Argentina, difundida por Alberdi, foi aplicada na Constituição de 1853 e quais foram às conseqüências imediatas geradas por essa política
In 1853 it was sanctioned the Constitucion Nacional de la República Argentina, responsible for the outset of the Argentine state organization. Juan Bautista Alberdi, intellectual and Tucumano author, influenced directly the constitutional subject, when he elaborated a literature work – Bases y Puntos de partida para la organización política de la República Argentina – which contents contemplated the organization of the National state. To Alberdi, the Constitution should express the needs of the country, and in his view, Argentina needed to be populated, once it had a vast territory and few inhabitants. Knowing this, he proposed laws to encourage immigrants income, not only to populate, but also to bring material progress to Argentina, what would occur from the moment that people arrived from “superior civilizations” started to inhabit the country and transmitted to the locals their “advanced mores”. In other words, Alberdi encouraged European immigration to Argentina. However, the author said that there would be no immigration and material progress without stability and political order, because since the independence process, crisis and political conflicts were disarranging the development and consolidation of Argentina; for this reason, in Bases y Puntos de partida para la organización política de la República Argentina, the Tucumano also proposes a political organization focused on the country’s stabilization and on the encouragement and contemplation of European income and consequent material progress. On this work we intend to analyze how did this propose of settlement of Argentina, widespread by Alberdi, have application on the Constitution of 1853, as well as the immediate consequences brought by this thought

Esta tese dedica-se à análise das ideias de nação produzidas, entre as décadas de 1830 e 1850, na Argentina, Brasil e Chile, ilustrando essas representações por meio de uma abordagem comparada de obras de três intelectuais sul-americanos: Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810-1884), José Inácio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869) e Andrés Bello (1781-1865). Desta forma, temos como principal foco compreender as representações e propostas dos três pensadores no concernente às suas ideias de nação, visando a confrontá-las. Para isto procuramos, inicialmente, compreender o ambiente intelectual e político ao qual cada produção estava relacionada, pelo recurso à abordagem dos contextos encontrados na Argentina, no Brasil e no Chile ao longo do período demarcado. Na década de 1830 principiava um momento eclético de transição política e intelectual, no qual o Estado nacional dava início à sua formação, que se completaria apenas na segunda metade do século XIX, e o romantismo começava a se fazer presente. Visando ainda a uma maior compreensão do momento de produção dos textos estudados, acompanhamos os itinerários de vida dos personagens em questão. Alberdi, Abreu e Lima e Bello, como de costume à época, em um misto entre homens políticos e intelectuais, foram atores envolvidos nas disputas de projetos nacionais referentes aos novos Estados que estavam se estabelecendo naquele momento. Os textos analisados foram produzidos em ambientes de disputas, estando, portanto, ligados a objetivos pragmáticos, ao elaborarem representações de passado, estabelecidas em uma conjuntura própria, com propostas de futuro. Intencionavam contribuir na constituição das novas comunidades políticas pela indicação de ideias de povo, estado cultural, governo, herança colonial e propostas de identidades. Nos discursos estudados e nos ambientes abordados, foram encontrados temas e leituras que passariam a constituir as produções historiográficas de meados do século XIX, preocupadas com a edificação de nacionalidades. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This dissertation endeavors an analysis of the ideas of nation produced between the decades of 1830 and 1850 in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. We aim to study their representations under a comparative perspective of three South American intellectuals [Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810-1884), José Inácio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869) and Andrés Bello (1781-1865)], by observing how these ideas arise in chosen works they authored. Thus, we primarily focus on representations and proposals of these three thinkers with regard to their ideas of nation, aiming to confront them. In a first moment we attempted to understand the intellectual and political environment to which each production relates by recurring to the approach of the surroundings during the mentioned period as found in Argentina, in Brazil and in Chile. In the 1830s, romanticism began to be seen while an eclectic time of political and intellectual transition was begining. Then, the nation state started to be built, in a process which would be completed only in the second half of the nineteenth century. Similarly, intending a better grasp of the time during which the studied texts were conceived, we furthermore retraced the life itineraries of these characters. Alberdi, Abreu e Lima and Bello, as usual during that epoch, mixing political and intellectual identities, were political actors involved in the disputes of national projects referred to the new states that were establishing themselves at the time. The texts were created in a conflictual environment and are, therefore, tied to pragmatic purposes that elaborated representations of the past, established in a particular conjuncture with propositions for the future. They intended to contribute to the constitution of new political communities foremost through the indication of certain ideas of people, cultural state, government, colonial heritage and identities plans. The discourses that were studied presented various themes and thinterpretations historiographic productions of the mid XIX century concerned with the building of nationalities. ______________________________________________________________________________ RESUMEN
Esta tesis se propone analizar las ideas de nación que se produjeron, entre las décadas de 1830 y 1850, en la Argentina, el Brasil y Chile, ilustrando dichas representaciones a través de un enfoque comparado de obras de tres intelectuales suramericanos: Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810-1884), José Inácio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869) y Andrés Bello (1781-1865). De esta forma, nuestro foco principal consiste em comprender las representaciones y las propuestas de los tres pensadores en lo concerniente a sus ideas de nación, con vistas a contrastarlas. Para realizar este estudio, procuramos, en un primer momento, comprender el ambiente intelectual y político con el que estaba relacionada cada una de las producciones, centrándonos en los contextos encontrados en la Argentina, el Brasil y Chile en el periodo demarcado. En la década de 1830 veía la luz un momento ecléctico de transición política e intelectual, en el que el Estado nacional daba inicio a su formación, que se llegaría a completarse tan solo en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, y en el que el romanticismo empezaba a hacerse presente. De la misma manera, para entender con más profundidad el periodo de producción de los textos estudiados, acompañamos los itinerarios de vida de los personajes en cuestión. Alberdi, Abreu e Lima y Bello, como era costumbre en aquel entonces, en una mezcla entre hombres políticos e intelectuales, constituyeron actores políticos implicados en las disputas de proyectos nacionales referentes a los nuevos Estados que se estaban estableciendo en aquel momento. Los textos surgieron en ambientes de disputas, por lo que se relacionan con objetivos pragmáticos, al elaborar representaciones de pasado, establecidas en una coyuntura propia, con propuestas de futuro. Tenían la intención de contribuir a la constitución de las nuevas comunidades políticas mediante la alusión a ideas de pueblo, estado cultural, gobierno, herencia colonial y a propuestas de identidades. En los discursos estudiados, se encontraron temas y lecturas que pasarían a formar parte de las producciones historiográficas de mediados del siglo XIX, preocupadas por la edificación de nacionalidades.

Full textThe objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis between La destrucción de Numancia, by Miguel de Cervantes, and the two adaptations by Rafael Alberti, both of which are titled Numancia: tragedia. This study sets out to propose a hypothesis indicating that, considering the changes made in the form and the content, the adaptations have led to two recreations which can be considered independent works. Such works would, thus, carry meaning which would correspond to the specific circumstances of the historical context they were created in. We have used rhetoric and poetic doctrines, as well as critiques on the tragedies to be analyzed to confirm our hypothesis. The article is composed of four chapters. Chapter one briefly contextualizes the origins and reception of Cervantes work and the two adaptations by Alberti. Chapter two focuses on the poetic elements shown differently between the three plays, as well as on both of the prologues in Albertis works. Chapter three centers around Albertis first version, written in 1937. Finally, chapter four analyzes the second play written in 1943. The analysis shows that, due to several changes, both tragedies are highlighted by Albertis aesthetic, political, and ideological convictions, thus placing the two plays further apart from Cervantes work. In the end, this allows the adaptations to be considered independent works, which is to say, recreations.

O tema desta dissertação de mestrado concentra-se no estudo acerca do estatuto do artífice no tratado Da pintura de Leon Battista Alberti. Para atingir esse objetivo, mostrar-se-á como a Renascença italiana tinha por base a filosofia aristotélica, cujo entendimento pode ser buscado nas classificações dos saberes no Renascimento. Isto posto, interessa analisar o tratado de Alberti para pensar que as artes na época faziam parte do contexto da filosofia num sentido amplo e, assim, podem ser estudadas pela História da Filosofia a partir de um “olhar de época”, diverso do olhar da História da Arte, a fim de pensar a posição do artífice na Renascença italiana.
This dissertation focuses on studying the artificer status as described in the treatise On Painting, by Leon Battista Alberti. To do so, it will show how Italian Renaissance was based on Aristotelian philosophy, whose understanding can be sought in the knowledge ratings during Renaissance. That said, it is interesting to analyze Alberti treatise to perceive the arts at the time as part of a philosophy context in a broad sense; and capable of being studied by Philosophy History from an “period eye”, different from Art History looking, in order to think about the artificer position during Italian Renaissance.

This dissertation investigates Leon Baptista Alberti's cultural critique, taking into consideration a broad spectrum of Alberti's writings, including many which have remained relatively unknown and ignored. Alberti developed his cultural theories by means of a literary ontology which is based on the definition of the author, his role in society, and his function as catalyst for regeneration. His theory of art and of history, and even his views on the task of Humanism it self, are all subsumed in his comprehensive attempt to demonstrate that myth-making capabilities are central to society's self-definition. Unless society keeps alive the myths of destruction and regeneration, its historical viability, so Alberti argues, is endangered. Alberti's aesthetic theory, which has previously been sought exclusively in his treatises, De pictura and De re aedificatoria, emerges in this inquiry as inextricably interlocked with his cultural critique. For the first time, the treatises will be viewed from within the context of Alberti's own thought.

Full textAlberti and Palladio were two of the leading names in the establishment of models for villas, which characterized the Italian Renaissance. At the beginning of the Renaissance period, Alberti in his De Re Aedificatoria established the foundation and the theoretical background of the subject. Afterward Palladio, in his I Quattro Libri Dell\'Architettura, systematized a set of formal rules that made him responsible for the diffusion of a general model of villa around the world. Bearing in mind the importance of the contribution of both authors and considering that Palladio read Alberti´s treatise, we made a comparative study of these two models of villa, in order to detect their similarities and differences. Several aspects of both authors\' arguments are addressed, starting from the development of the subject in the body of the treaties and including the different definitions of the term villa. Given the important contributions of Alberti and Palladio in the field of graphic representation of architecture and intellectual process of project, the relationship between these two topics was discussed, both in the composition and in the presentation of villas (specifically in the Palladian treaty). Furthermore, we analyzed the establishment of hierarchies used in adapting the villas to the social class of their owners; we investigated the sections proposed for the organization of the villa and, finally, we examined the partitions of these buildings. Although the two authors read Vitruvius, who could have provided them with a common theoretical background, it must be stressed that Vitruvius´s writings were of little use in the conception and project of villas. Therefore, it is surprising and revealing the resemblance noticed in the villas of Alberti and Palladio. In different parts of the treaties, discussions are so close that they seem complementary. Besides, Palladian projects can also be used to exemplify indications theorized by Alberti. The present study does not bring to an end the discussion; instead, it intends to check the existence of a relationship between the ideas of in both authors. We demonstrate that this relationship is actually strong, overcoming all the initial speculations of tight connections.
