Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This study assessed the impact of various harvesting practices (including those designed to emulate natural disturbances) on ectomycorrhizae (ECM) associated with white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) in northwestern Alberta, Canada. Treatments included clearcuts, partial cuts (dispersed green-tree retention with 20%, 50%, and 75% residual live trees, and aggregated green-tree retention), unharvested control sites, and a burned stand. The percentage of active white spruce root tips and ECM richness and diversity, as observed in soil cores collected throughout the study site, all decreased with increasing disturbance intensity. Effects were particularly pronounced in clearcuts, machine corridors used for access by harvesting equipment in the dispersed green-tree retention stands, and in burned areas. Reductions in ECM biodiversity could be attributed to the sensitivity of late-stage ectomycorrhizae (e.g., Cortinarius spp., Lactarius spp., and Russula spp.) to soil disturbances and changes in microclimate associated with harvesting or burning. Areas of dispersed and aggregated green-tree retention were not dramatically different than unharvested forest in terms of root tip density and ECM richness, diversity, and composition. Harvesting practices that retain a percentage of residual live trees, either dispersed throughout the cutting unit or in aggregated patches, could be an effective means of maintaining ectomycorrhizal biodiversity at the stand level.

Abstract:
My interest in Humanities, cultural and sociological phenomena of the unifying Europe, and my love for languages and other cultures have influenced the choice of the field of my studies. These interests led almost automatically to the consideration of political, social and personal changes in Alsace-Lorraine since that is the place were two different cultures are forced by geography and history to connect, compete and overlap. My thesis focuses on Alsace after the Liberation (1944-1951) when politics, education and culture were the subjects of crucial discussions by the population at large, the administration and politicians

Grigore-Muresan, Madalina. Angers, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998ANGE0019.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of the terror of history; which emerges from M. Eliade's theoretical works, and especially from his book entitled Le mythe de l'éternel retour was the starting point of this thesis. Studying the imaginary in the oeuvres of M. Eliade, A. Camus, E. M. Cioran, E. Ionesco and R. Char aimed at demonstrating that 20th century literary creation is the expression of a tension which lies between a consciousness of being roated in history and a compulsion to reach beyond historical conditioning and its ensuing suffering. The terror of history; for M. Eliade, revolt for A. Camus, scepticism for E. M. Cioran, the absurd for E. Ionesco and fury for R. Char are above all artistic terms implicitly expressing a refusal to accept terrifying historical events. The work done by imagination to convert negative images into positive and reassuring ones appears to be an effective means of overcoming fear provoked by war, occupation and totalitarianism. The paradise lost; image and the staircase, arrow and light symbols in m. Eliade's works attest to the character's desire to reach the sacred by going against historical time. The symbolism of the stone developed by A. Camus relates to man's will to defy history. The symbolical experiences evoked by E. M. Cioran, the flight and the discovery of divine light for E. Ionesco and immersion in regenerative water for R. Char enable people to escape from times of terror and attain freedom

Abstract:
As Canada continues its drive towards a national electronic health record the costs are mounting. With 256 projects underway the question has to be asked: what are the true costs of such an endeavor? Success hinges on cooperation at all levels and adequate funding in place to see it to completion. Has Canada taken into full consideration the impact that this project will have in the long run? One small part of a much larger project in rural Alberta puts a face on the huge undertaking. Nurses in one former health region adopted not only an Order Entry module but also began using computers for the first time in order to do their work. Nurses are one of the key end-user groups actually inputting the information into these systems. Is data entry something nurses need to be concerned with at all especially at the Order Entry level?

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes the development and implementation of a computerized knowledge-based system (SmartMix) that provides assistance to concrete mix designers by automatically generating designs of concrete mixes. These concrete mixes can be used for the construction of power plants, buildings, bridges, etc. The generation of designs by SmartMix is based on current design practices and heuristic rules. SmartMix incorporates current empirical data and its knowledge base can be expanded to include data gathered in the future. SmartMix is a fully operational system and has been designed taking into account the existence of several concrete plants geographically distributed that produce concrete mixes. This is an important consideration because different materials will be available depending on the geographic location of a particular plant. The mix design provided by SmartMix addresses the specific requirements and characteristics of the concrete plant that is to produce it. SmartMix was built using a knowledge-based systems environment called Smart Elements from Neuron Data. The system’s domain expertise consists of heuristic knowledge, statistical information and intelligent objects. The system has improved the reliability and consistency of the new concrete mix designs and has reduced dramatically the time and cost associated with the design of concrete mixes with respect to the manual process. The development of SmartMix was completed in 1995 as a result of a Joint Research Venture project between Pildysh Engineering Inc. and the Alberta Research Council. SmartMix has been in use since the fall of 1995 and is currently being used by Pildysh Engineering Inc. as a primary tool for the design of concrete mixes. Substantial cost savings and quality improvement have been achieved as a result of the implementation of SmartMix.

The one equation (k-l), Spalart Allmaras (SA) and the two-equation Menter SST and Chien models in their standard forms are found to be insensitive to acceleration. Nevertheless, proposed modifications for the SA, Chien and the k-l models significantly improved predictions. The major improvement was achieved by modifying the damping functions in these models and also an analogous source term, E, for the Chien model. Encouraging agreement with measurements is found using the Launder Sharma (LS), Cubic and Explicit Algebraic Stress Models (EASM) in their standard forms. The cubic model best predicted the turbulence quantities. Investigations confirm that it is practical for Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) models to capture reversion from the turbulent to laminar state albeit for equilibrium sink type flows.

Abstract:
To meet ever increasing capacity and performance requirements of emerging data-intensive applications, highly distributed and multilayered back-end storage systems have been employed in large-scale high performance computing (HPC) environments. A main component of these storage infrastructures is the parallel file system (PFS), a especially designed file system for absorbing bulk data transfers from applications with thousands of concurrent processes. Load distribution on PFS data servers compose a major source of intra-application input/output (I/O) performance variability. Albeit mitigating variability is desirable, as it is known to harm application-perceived performance, understanding and dealing with I/O performance variability in such complex environments remains a challenging task. In this research, a differentiated approach for evaluating and mitigating intra-application I/O performance variability over PFSs is proposed. More specifically, from the evaluation perspective, a comprehensive approach combining complementary methods is proposed. An analytical model proposal, named DTSMaxLoad, provides estimates for the maximum load in a PFS data server. To complement DTSMaxLoad, modeling conditions and mechanisms hard to represent analytically, the Parallel I/O and Storage System (PIOSS) simulation model was proposed. Finally, for experimental evaluation over real environments, a flexible and distributed I/O performance evaluation tool, coined as IOR-Extended (IORE), was proposed. Furthermore, a high-level file distribution approach for PFSs, called N-N Round-Robin (N2R2), was proposed focusing on mitigating I/O performance variability for distributed applications where each process accesses an individual and independent file. An extensive experimental effort, including measurements on real environments, was conducted in this research work for evaluating each of the proposed approaches. In summary, this evaluation indicated both DTSMaxLoad and PIOSS modeling proposals can represent load distribution behavior on PFSs with significant fidelity. Moreover, results demonstrated N2R2 successfully reduced intra-application I/O performance variability for 270 distinct experimental scenarios, which, ultimately, translated into overall application I/O performance Improvements.

"HEPARIN AND NON-ANTICOAGULANT HEPARINS INHIBIT HEPARANASE ACTIVITY IN NORMAL AND MALIGNANT CELLS:POSSIBLE THERAPEUTIC USE IN PREVENTION OF EXTRAVASATION AND DISSEMINATION OF BLOOD BORNE CELLS." Abstract:
Degradation of vascular subendothelium occurs in_vivo during the process of inflammation and tumor invasion. Various observations suggest that the capacity of some blood-borne cells to extravasate may depend in part on their ability to express hepara-nase activity. Incubation of human platelets, human nc-utrophils, or highly metastatic mouse lymphoma cells with sulfate-labeled extracellular matrix (ECM) results in heparanase mediated release of labeled heparan sulfate cleavage fragments (0.5<Kav<0.85 on Sepharose 5B) (J. Clin.Invest. 74: 1842 and 76: 1306; Cancer Res. 43: 2704). The present study was undertaken to test the heparanase inhibitory effect of heparin and non-anticoagulant species of heparin that might havea potential therapeutic use in preventing heparanase mediated extravasation ofblood-borne cells. We prepared totallyor N-desulfated heparins which were either left with their N-position exposed or were subsequently N-acetylated or N-resulfated. These heparins exhibited less than 5% of the anticoagulant activityof native heparin. It was found that total desulfation of heparin abolished its heparanase inhibitory activity whether desulfation was followed by N-acetylation or not. Inhibitory effect was restored by resulfation of the N-position. When only the N-sulfate group was desulfated, inhibitory activity was lost but could be restored by acetylation of the N-position. These results indicate that N-sulfate groups of heparin are necessary for its heparanase inhibitory activity but can be substituted by an acetyl group provided that the 0-sulfate groups are retained. Low Mr heparins (main Mr species of 2500 and 4500 daltons) and heparin fragments as small as the tetrasaccharide inhibited degradation of heparan sulfate in the ECM, albeit to a lower extent than native heparin. Similar effects of the different heparins were observed with heparanase activities from platelets, neutrophils and lymphoma cells. Preliminary in vivo experiments suggest that non-anticoagulant heparins interfere with tumor metastasis and experimental autoimmune diseases (some heparins were kindly provided by Inst. Choay, Paris and Kabi Vitrum, Stockholm).

Abstract:
Simplicity, low cost and easy replacement make labyrinth seals the primary seal type in gas turbines. However, excessive leakage and potential for rotordynamic instability are well known issues. Brush seals effectively control leakage in air breathing engines, albeit only applied for relatively low-pressure differentials. Hybrid brush seals (HBS) are an alternative to resolve poor reliability resulting from bristle tip wear while also allowing for reverse rotation operation. The novel configuration incorporates pads contacting the shaft; which under rotor spinning; lift-off due to the generation of a hydrodynamic pressure. The ensuing gas film prevents intermittent contact; thus lowering the operating temperature and thermal distortions, and even eliminating bristle wear. The hybrid brush seal improves sealing, is more durable and reliable than conventional brush seals, and allows reverse shaft rotation without seal damage. The paper presents measurements of power loss and leakage in a hybrid brush seal (HBS) for increasing pressure differentials over a range of rotor speeds. The test HBS, Haynes-25 bristle pack [∼850 bristles/cm] and 45° lay angle, is 166.4 mm in diameter and integrates 20-arcuate pads connected with thin EDM-webs to the seal casing. The webs are designed with low radial stiffness to allow for rotor excursions and high axial stiffness to avoid pad pitching motions resulting from high pressure differentials across the seal. Measured drag power at low rotor speeds (< 11 m/s at 1,300 rpm) decreases as the pressure differential across the seal increases. At a fixed rotor speed, a significant drop in drag torque (and drag power) ensues as the supply pressure increases, thus demonstrating that a gas film separates the rotor from the seal pads. Additionally, the operating temperature measured at the rotor/seal interface remains approximately constant (∼24°C) during tests with shaft rotation (power loss and drag torque measurements) under pressurized conditions; indicating that the rotor and seal pads are not in contact. Flow rate measurements at room temperature (25°C) show an improved sealing ability with a leakage reduction of about 36%, when compared to a first generation shoed-brush seal (SBS). The HBS calculated effective clearance (∼50 μm) is approximately 70% smaller than the radial clearance (∼180 μm) of an ideal non contacting seal with similar rotor diameter. Improved brush seal technology will increase the efficiency of gas turbines while also aiding to improve the engine stability and to reduce vibrations.
