In the framework of fiction for younger audiences, the fantasy mode becomes a tool which allows to examine the topics important to young readers, such as identity and their place within the society, by providing a confrontation with the Other. The example of Nnedi Okorafor’s book, known in the USA as Akata Witch, shows how the instrumentation of a fantasy novel enables an exposition of the process in which the pro

Albinos are at great risk for developing cutaneous malignancy. We report a 33-year-old patient of occulocutaneous albinism who presented with multiple actinic keratoses and basal-cell carcinoma. This report highlights the increase in vascular structures seen on dermoscopy as a clue toward malignant transformation. We hereby emphasize the role of dermoscopy for monitoring and screening of skin tumors in albinism and other genodermatosis prone to skin tumors.

Differentiating between the effects of albinism and domestication on behaviour in rodents can be difficult, and social behaviour in cave fish changes according to species-specific adaptations to conditions of permanent darkness. Albinism is an inherited condition affecting at least 1 in 4000 people in Africa. It is thought to be more common among black Africans although it affects the entire human populations. In most African societies, albinism is regarded to be a disability and the social attitudes against albinos are characterised by lack of understanding, fear, and also of prejudice based on the appearance of albinism. There are various myths surrounding albinos such as that they are born as a punishment, that it is a curse to give birth to albinos and that albinos are immortal and that they are in fact spirits. T

Abstract Spatial vision is degraded by nystagmus due to the instability of visual targets on the retina. Strategies to decrease nystagmus could, therefore, improve spatial vision, provided that the individual possesses a normal retinal architecture. This may not be the case, however, in all patients with nystagmus, particularly albinos in whom the fovea is abnormal.1,2 As a result, it would be useful to obtain an objective determination of the retinal architecture prior to initiating any treatment, particularly treatment that involves surgery.
