Abstract:
Abstract Data collected from skin specimens of the 23 Recent species of Alcidae, skeletal material for Recent and fossil alcids, and published data on body mass and wing area were used to describe the morphometric characteristics of flightlessness in the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) and the fossil mancalline auks. A regression equation confirmed a body-mass estimate (5 kg) for P. impennis (Bédard 1969). The size and relatively small wings produced wing-loading of roughly 22 g· cm-2, comparable to those of medium-sized penguins. Multivariate analysis of external measurements underscored the uniquely large size, relatively short wings, and moderately deep bill of Pinguinus compared to other Recent alcids. Analysis of skeletal measurements revealed that the genera of flightless Alcidae (Pinguinus, Mancalla, Praemancalla, and Alcodes) were characterized by relatively short distal wing elements and dorsoventral flattening of all major wing elements, in combination with relatively large core and pelvic dimensions. These differences were most pronounced in Mancalla, moderately developed in Praemancalla, and smallest in Pinguinus. Estimated body mass (1-4 kg) for selected fossil mancallines exceeded the largest flighted alcids (Uria) but was less than for Pinguinus. Pinguinus was a comparatively large piscivore sharing many morphological features with the Razorbill (Alca torda) and murres (Uria spp.). Its flightlessness evidently was a consequence of extreme specialization for pursuit diving, convergent with that of the Spheniscidae. Loss of flight imposed significant requirements on breeding sites and foraging habitats of the Great Auk and presumably the mancallines, and rendered Pinguinus exceptionally vulnerable to human exploitation.

Abstract:
Background: Alcian blue (AB) is a cationic dye that stains mucins especially acidic mucins into varying shades of blue colour depending on the pH of the dye. GIT comprises of three main portions, fore-, mid- and hind-gut, which develops from different embryological areas. Their epithelial lining presents with varying degree of diversity including their secretions. Studies have shown that there is a tendency of cellular modification (physical and chemical) including secretions during tumour morphogenesis. With recent increase in GIT tumours especially epithelial tumours, Alcian Blue staining of mucins produced by these tumours at different pH more than conventional pH might give valuable information on the property of these tumours. Setting: The study was conducted in the Histopathology and Morbid Anatomy unit, department of Laboratory services, Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania. Study design: This was a hospital based retrospective study, in which archival data and blocks were retrieved. Objective: To determine the effect of pH and pattern of Alcian blue staining on primary GIT epithelial tumours tumours. Materials and Methods: Information on patients were obtained from cancer registry and patient files. Paraffin blocks were retrieved from archive, sections were cut using rotary microtome at 3μm (SAKURA). Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and AB staining at pH 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 was done for each case and control. H&E slides were reviewed for confirmation of the diagnosis primary epithelial tumours and AB stained slides were evaluated for staining reaction and graded. Results: Out of 87 GIT primary epithelial tumours which were evaluated, AB staining was positive in 21 (24.1%) cases, the majority of these (11 (52.4%)) were from hindgut. Positive AB staining of GIT epithelial tumours increased as the tumour became more differentiated irrespective of location. Majority of tumours with positive AB staining was observed at pH 2 in GIT epithelial tumours as opposed to the conventional pH of 1 and 2.5 respectively. Conclusions and recommendation: The majority of primary GIT epithelial tumours stained positively at pH 2 irrespective of the location. However tumour differentiation influenced AB staining whereby well-differentiated tumours were mostly positively stained. It is recommended that AB at pH 2 should be applied when staining GIT epithelial tumours rather than conventional pH of 1 and 2.5. However the degree of differentiation should be considered since poorly differentiated tumours are likely to give negative results with AB staining.

Hoberg, Eric P. "Evolution and historical biogeography of a parasite–host assemblage: Alcataenia spp. (Cyclophyllidea: Dilepididae) in Alcidae (Charadriiformes)." Canadian Journal of Zoology 64, no. 11 (November 1, 1986): 2576–89. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/z86-378.

Full text
Abstract:
The methodology of phylogenetic systematics was used to develop hypotheses for the evolution of eight species of Alcataenia, a group of host-specific cestodes of the Alcidae and, to a lesser extent, the Laridae (Charadriiformes). Concurrently, aspects of the early biogeography of alcids were reevaluated making it possible to study the historical and distributional relationships of parasites and hosts. The most parsimonious hypothesis for the phylogeny of Alcataenia suggested that sequential colonization or host switching with limited coevolution (coaccommodation) by parasites best explained the distributional patterns exhibited by Alcataenia spp. Morphological evolution of specific species of Alcataenia accompanied host switching, but was limited subsequent to the initial event of colonization. Thus evolution of these parasites following colonization lagged behind continuing diversification of the host group. Although alcids are an ancient group, as indicated by palaeontological and phylogenetic data, their cestode fauna is apparently not. It is postulated that Alcataenia spp. were acquired by their characteristic hosts in the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene, following diversification of the Alcidae at the generic level during the Miocene. Host distributions of respective Alcataenia spp. are more narrow than expected, considering the relatively young age of this assemblage. The current paradigm linking pronounced host specificity with coevolution of hosts and parasites in assemblages of great evolutionary age is not supported.

Abstract:
The Alchian and Allen theorem states that when a common per unit fee is added to the prices of high and low quality goods, the relative price of the high quality good falls, and its relative consumption increases. The theorem has been analyzed in the literature under the assumption that the prices of the goods are exogenous. This thesis presents a spatial equilibrium model that drops this restriction. The comparative statics analysis developed in this thesis does not support the theorem proposition in the general case. The theorem is then tested empirically on U.S. hard wheat exports. Transport costs, represented by ocean grain freight rates, are not found to have a significant influence on the average quality of U.S. wheat exports for the group of importing countries with a high per capita incomes that have not received U.S. export subsidies. However, transport costs are shown to be positively related with the average quality of U.S. wheat exports for the group of low-income importing countries. Additionally, it is shown that there exists an inverse relationship between the relative price of high quality wheat and the average quality of U.S. wheat exports for high-income countries.

Daly-Galeano, Heather Marlowe. "Little Women, Mutable Authors: Louisa May Alcott and the Question of Authorship." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/223371.

Full text
Abstract:
This project analyzes the ways that Louis May Alcott portrays authors in several texts, including Hospital Sketches (1863), "Enigmas" (1864), "Psyche's Art" (1868), Little Women (1868), A Modern Mephistopheles (1877), and Diana and Persis (1878). An examination of prevailing contemporary theories of authorship reveals that Alcott's interest in authorship (as shown through her experiences as a writer and the author figures she depicts within her writing) cannot be adequately analyzed under any of the existing theoretical frameworks because the theories neglect to consider markers of racial, sexual, cultural, and class-based difference. Being a female author in nineteenth-century America was, for Alcott, a preoccupation. Thus much of her writing features representations of authors. For Alcott, as well as many of her female contemporaries, the question "What does it mean to be an author?" cannot be considered without also asking, "What does it mean to be a woman?" and "How can an author be represented in a text?" Alcott's treatment of these questions in her writing was her attempt to create a dialogue between herself, other writers, and her reading public. By studying Alcott's author figures, I advance a model of authorship that highlights issues of gender and multiplicity; in this way my work has applications to other authors who have been excluded by normative definitions of authorship. The concept of "mutable authorship," a model that more accurately incorporates Alcott's treatment of authorship, is the product of several different literary, historical, and feminist theoretical lenses. This dissertation works through the different structuring figures that Alcott uses to represent the author, beginning with the semi-autobiographical first-person narrator and moving to the more metaphorical figures of the artist and the performer. The discussion culminates with the exploration of adaptation and collaboration in the three Hollywood feature films of Alcott's best-known work, Little Women, and several recent texts that respond directly to Alcott's work.

Abstract:
Thromboatherosclerotic lesions in normolipidemic rabbits may contain variable amounts of lipid but the cause of this variable lipid content is not understood. Proteoglycan (PG) has been implicated in the trapping of lipoproteins in atherosclerosis. The object of this investigation was to study the quantity and quality of PG and glycosaminoglycan (GAG ) in early white mural thrombus induced with an indwelling catheter in the aorta of the rabbit as it evolves into thrombo atherosclerosis and to determine if the Alcian Blue stainable PG correlates with lipid accumulation. Lesions were compared with the normal aortic wall and a gut Alcian Blue standard embedded in the same block and cut and stained with Alcian Blue under the same conditions and analysed with a computerized color system that measures unstained lipid and Alcian Blue in a delineated lesion. The normal rabbit aorta had a mean ALCIAN BLUE COLOR VALUE “ ABCV ”of 10 equivalent to 14 ug GAG per ( mg dlt) mg delipidated tissue. Early mural thrombus in normolipidemic rabbits had virtually no Alcian Blue stainable proteoglycan and sin ABCV of 1 to 2 . After 12 weeks the resulting thrombo atherosclerotic lesions had a mean ABCV of 28±12 ( equivalent to 39±17 ug GAG per mg dlt. The ABCV in areas with large numbers of macrophages laden with lipid droplets and platelet debris ranged from 5 to 15. It is concluded that proteoglycans play a less significant role in the accumulation of lipid and platelet debris by the macrophages and this lipid and platelet debris may regress readily; but probably plays a more important role in the accumulation of interstitial lipid adjacent to smooth muscle cells. The interstitial lipid and PG deposits adjacent to numerous smooth muscle cells may be more resistant to regression. These two types of lipid deposits which are both variable determines the total lipid concentration in these lesions.
