The selective aerobic oxidation of organic molecules has been highlighted as a fundamental and practical challenge for modem chemistry. The oxidation of alcohols is one such challenge. It is a key reaction in the synthesis of many compounds, however rarely implemented in an industrial setting. In the last 20 years Pd(II) complexes modulated with oxidatively stable ligands have emerged as a promising class of catalysts for the reaction. Such Pd(Il) ligated complexes utilise molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant producing benign by- products such as water. Although the work to date has been pione

The selective oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl product is an important transformation. Traditionally this reaction has been carried out using stoichiometric oxidants, but such methods are highly undesirable from an environmental viewpoint. Glycerol is a very promising alternative fuel to hydrogen in fuel cells. However, the utilisation of glycerol as a fuel requires a good catalyst, due to the slow kinetics of glycerol electrooxidation. Gold has been identified as a promising catalyst due to its high activity and stability for glycerol electrooxidation – although the overpotentials are higher than on platinum and palladium. Modification of a nano-Au/C catalyst by the addition of MnO2, in an attempt to further improve the activity and lower the overpotential for glycerol oxidation, was therefore first explored. TEM analysis showed that the freshly prepared catalyst does not contain detectable Aunano clusters, while the spent CO oxidation catalyst had clearly visible nanoparticles with an average size of approximately 1.6 nm. The use of enzymes as catalysts for chemical transformations has emerged as a “greener” alternative to traditional organic synthesis. An issue to solve though, is that enzymes are designed by nature to catalyze reactions in a living cell and therefore, in many cases, do not meet the requirements of a suitable biocatalyst. By mimicking Darwinian evolution these problems can be addressed in vitro by different types of directed evolution strategies. α-Hydroxy aldehydes and α-hydroxy ketones are important building blocks in the synthesis of natural products, fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract: A brief overview of this PhD thesis, The emergence of nanotechnology has stimulated both fundamental and industrially relevant studies of the catalytic activity of noble metal nanoparticles. Palladium, ruthenium and gold are well known catalysts when used in nanoparticle- based systems. This body of work endeavoured to investigate the catalytic activity of these noble metal nanoparticles through three studies as a briefly overviewed below. Study 1: Palladium is a well-known catalyst, even in bulk phases, but its high cost had driven industry towards its use in nanoparticle- based sy

Abstract:
This thesis concentrated on the study of the room temperature liquid metal, gallium and its eutectics. The application of liquid metal-based alloys to new areas of catalysis was extended by encompassing energy and environmental applications. A significant advancement in the potential application of liquid metal-based alloys in electrocatalysis, photocatalysis and sonocatalysis has resulted from this research. Significantly, research conducted on carbon dioxide capture/conversion to metal carbonates during this graduate study is currently being explored for industrial waste management.
