Abstract:
Distilleren, herhaaldelijk koken van wijn of wijndroesem (marc) en de damp laten neerslaan, noemde men branden. Het resultaat was gebrande wijn, brandewijn. Nadat men er in geslaagd was ook alcohol te distilleren op basis van granen, kenden de productie en gebruik vanaf de jaren 1500 een geweldige uitbreiding. De verkoop van alcoholische dranken is altijd al onderworpen geweest aan taksen en strenge inperkende bepalingen. De overheden hadden het vooral op de ‘sterke drank’ gemunt.
