Abstract:
This thesis is supported by a major assumption. First, the acceptance of the disease concept of alcoholism gives good conscience to the citizen and, especially, to the administration. On the other hand, for centuries and, particularly, for the present one, the alcohol, which is an actual fact well established in the french social and cultural life, has been leading to different models of consumption. In the social uneasiness background, each different model becomes an answer. The sociology can help to take to pieces the mechanism of interactions that alcohol keeps up with social relations and, so, bring a specific light in the large field of researchs on alcohology

Abstract:

Abstract: The determination of concentration of a solution in real time is one of the main research subjects for engineering areas. It is also of great interest for many industries and fuel companies. In many cases, making mixtures using two components of good quality, but with the concentration out of the regulation, results in low quality products, such as many Brazilian commercialized fuel (gasoline E25 and hydrated ethanol). In this research, an optical reflectometer was used to measure reflected light intensity from the fiber-liquid interface of gasoline-ethanol and ethanol-water mixtures of different concentrations and temperatures. Due to the dependence of refractive index of these mixtures with their concentrations, the reflected light intensities varied according to the concentration of mixtures. By using the calibration curves measured by optical sensor, a novel online methodology to correlate the output of optical signal to the concentration of mixture ratio of fuel was developed. For gasoline-ethanol mixtures, a first-order equation was used to correlate the reflected light intensity and concentration ratios, with a deviation of ~ 1%. In the case of ethanol-water mixtures, due to their azeotropic nature (volumetric contraction), the response of reflected intensity do not present a linear behavior. Therefore a second-order approximation was adopted, getting a deviation up to 1,5% in concentration. The results of the present research show the feasibility of this technology for online quality control of fuels.
Mestrado
Materiais e Processos de Fabricação
Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Two primary pharmacological candidates known to influence aggression are alcohol, the intoxicating ingredient of many popular beverages, and serotonin, a class of neurotransmitters important in behavioral regulation. I present four complementary investigations into these two pharmacological targets, examining respectively: (1) the interaction between aggressive personality features and alcohol intoxication, (2) alcohol’s influence on moral reasoning in the face of moral dilemmas involving the use of aggression, (3) the size and strength of the relationship between central serotonin activity and various measures of human aggression, and finally, (4) the ability of Omega-3 supplementation to attenuate aggression via its impact on serotonergic functioning

Benkdane, Merieme. Thesis, Paris Est, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PEST0062.

Full text
Abstract:
Summary not transmitted

Sentcоv, Valentin, Andrei Reutov, and Vyacheslav Kuzmin. Electronic training manual "Acute poisoning with alcohols and alcohol-containing liquids". SIB-Expertise, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.12731/er0778.29012024.

Full text
Abstract:
In the structure of acute poisonings, ethanol poisoning currently accounts, according to various sources, from 10 to 20%. The mortality rate in poison control centers for ethanol poisoning is 1-2%, but the mortality rate is much higher due to those who died before medical care was provided. The widespread use of methanol and ethylene glycol in various industries and the high mortality rate with late recognition of poisoning with these alcohols determine the high relevance of a detailed study of the clinic, diagnosis and treatment of these poisonings by doctors of various specialties. In particular, toxicologists from health care institutions, anesthesiologists and resuscitators from health care institutions, doctors from specialized emergency medical services teams, and disaster medicine doctors. Competent and timely diagnosis, hospitalization in a specialized hospital and previously started treatment greatly increases the patient’s chances of life and its further quality. This electronic educational resourse consists of six theoretical educational modules: general issues of clinical toxicology, acute poisoning with veratrine, acute poisoning with ethanol, poisoning with methanol, poisoning with ethylene glycol, acute poisoning with other alcohols. The theoretical block of modules is presented by presentations, the text of lectures with illustrations. Control classes in the form of test control accompany each theoretical module. After studying all modules, the student passes the final test control. Mastering the electronic educational resourse will ensure a high level of readiness to provide specialized toxicological care by doctors of various specialties.

Schulz, Florian, Jörg Wolstein, and Henriette Engelhardt-Wölfler. The choice of indicators influences conclusions about the educational gradient of sex-specific alcohol consumption. OPUS, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irbo-55267.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been considerable public interest in reports on harmful alcohol consumption of higher educated females. This study assesses the robustness of this finding with representative German data using ten different indicators of alcohol consumption. This cross-sectional study used data of the Epidemiological Survey on Substance Abuse from 2012. 4,225 females and 3,239 males represent the German population aged 18–64. It presents ten indicators of alcohol consumption by sex and education and provides group specific means and 95 %-confidence intervals. The main results are: (1) Higher educated males and females are drinking alcohol more frequently than lower educated males and females. (2) When drinking, higher educated males and females tend to drink less alcohol than lower educated males and females. (3) Only when using an indicator for hazardous alcohol consumption with different thresholds for males and females, the results indicate a pattern that significantly exposes hazardous alcohol consumption in the group of higher educated females. Concerning the choice of indicators, this study shows that sex-specific threshold-based indicators of alcohol consumption may lead to different conclusions as the majority of other indicators.

Abstract:
Alcohol consumption is known to impair our cognitive functions, influencing behaviour and risk-perception. The Australian water safety strategy identifies alcohol and drug consumption to be a major risk factor in drowning events, highlighting the need to understand more around the characteristics of these behaviours. This brief report covers a 5-year period on all alcohol and drugs present at the time of the drowning event, broken down by demographics, and whether the alcohol and/or drugs consumed were found to contribute to the drowning event.

De Mello, Joao, Daniel Mejía, and Lucía Suárez. The Pharmacological Channel Revisited: Alcohol Sales Restrictions and Crime in Bogota. Inter-American Development Bank, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011466.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper attempts to evaluate the impact on crime of the restriction of late-night alcohol sales in Bogota and quantify the causal effect of problematic alcohol consumption on different crime categories. It is found that the restriction reduced deaths and injuries in car accidents and batteries. The results are stronger in areas where the restriction was actually binding and are highly heterogeneous depending on the number of liquor stores restricted at the block level. Finally, the paper measures the impact of the restriction on alcohol consumption (the first stage, or mechanism), and quantifies the causal pharmacological impact of alcohol consumption on crime using the restriction as an instrument for problematic alcohol consumption (the second stage). The results indicate that a one standard deviation (s. d. ) increase in problematic alcohol consumption increases deaths and injuries in car accidents by 0. 51 s. d and 0. 82 s. d. respectively, and batteries by 1. 27 s. d.
