Despite its beginning in the 1850’s and being first in Canada to purchase a tile drainage trencher, subsurface drainage of agricultural lands in Quebec is poorly documented, which the present paper will try to document from 1850 to 1970. In Quebec, Catholic priests and monks played an important role in educating rural communities by establishing French agricultural schools throughout the province. For the English rural communities, Macdonald College (Macdonald Campus of McGill University) played a major role especially in preparing plans, besides promoting the technology. The Quebec Ministry o

Field experiments were conducted at Agricultural college and Research Institute, Coimbatore to study the impact of weed management options on the nitrogen dynamics in the rhizosphere soil of two rice hybrids CORH2 and ADTRHI during 2001-02. Manual hand weeding was tested against conoweeding in which weeds were incorporated insitu in the field. Conoweeding set a favourable impact on the nitrogen fractions of the rhizosphere soil owing to the aeration of the soil rendered by the mechanical weeder due to soil stirring resulting in greater mobility of nitrogen in the rhizosphere region.

<p> Historically Black Colleges and Universities have historically been given less funding than White institutions, a known discrepancy partially rectified by the Civil Rights era desegregation lawsuits. The court-ordered funding, however, came with race-based restrictions for public HBCUs, and many lost academic programs to traditionally White institutions. In numerous situations, Black colleges were closed outright or merged with White institutions. The following study explores the unique case of an HBCU coerced into merging an academic unit with a neighboring historically White university.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter begins by looking at Althea Gibson’s move to Tallahassee to start her education at Florida A&amp;M. By coming to Florida’s capital city, which operated under Jim Crow laws, she had moved further South and more deeply under segregation. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College (FAMC) itself represented the ways in which segregation limited Gibson’s options. Respectability enforced by the FAMC administration mediated what students did, where they went, and how they looked when they went there. The chapter then focuses on the campaign to get Gibson into Forest Hills. It also recounts her time in the National Clay Court tournament and the Eastern Grass-Court Championships. As Gibson waited for the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) to announce her admission into Forest Hills, the White national championship, she prepared to compete in the American Tennis Association (ATA) Nationals, the Black event. In covering Gibson’s admission to Forest Hills, the press, Black and White, confronted gender in sports integration while at the same time inadvertently revealing the factors that made it difficult for Black women to gain a foothold in almost any realm considered exclusively male.

Abstract This chapter describes Althea Gibson’s experiences competing in tennis tournaments from 1951 to 1953, as well as her continued struggles with sexism and racism. These tournaments include the Caribbean Championship, the National Indoors at the Seventh Regiment Armory, and the Good Neighbor Tournament. The exclusivity of Miami Beach made Gibson’s entry in the Good Neighbor a landmark moment for her chroniclers in the African-American press. Being a Black woman on the White tennis circuit gave Gibson social capital but not money or independence. The chapter then turns to Gibson’s debut at Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Other tournaments that Gibson participated in during this time include the Pennsylvania State Tennis Tournament at the famed Merion Cricket Club in Haverford and the Eastern Grass Court Championships. While Gibson’s status as the premier Black tennis player in the world earned her no latitude in academics at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College (FAMC), her fame was still rewarded with special treatment elsewhere. Gibson experienced personal disappointment as she did not succeed in amateur tennis as quickly as she had hoped.

Hands-on, design oriented experiences have been shown to increase the visibility of the engineering profession; inspiring pre-college students to better prepare in math and science, and pursue an engineering degree. Most of these programs are successful, but they primarily focus on the creative aspects of highly specialized industries with little regard to the detail process of real world engineering design. Many students enroll in engineering programs believing the profession is solely focused on creativity and “building stuff” from a provided set of components. Once faced with the analysis a

Abstract Pre-college project-based learning programs are essential means to increase the students’ interest toward STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines and careers. Engineering-based projects have shown significant impact on the students’ interests. Therefore, developing countries are investing strategically in their emphasis to attract students to careers in STEM fields, specifically engineering and medicine. That resulted in a steady expansion of their educational pipeline in STEM; and while that emphasis remains, there is a new and urgent need for expertise i
