Full textThis dissertation is the first overall study on Alessandro Manzoni’s relationship with the English-speaking world, considered along both lines: possible influences from English literature on Manzoni’s works, and Manzoni’s reception in Great Britain and the United States in the XIXth century. Manzoni was not ignored or misunderstood in those countries, as some critics believed. On the contrary, distinguished men and women from the literary and cultural world read, liked and quoted his works. Indeed, the great number of translations, reviews, anthologies and books on Italy dealing with Manzoni testifies that the Italian author was well-known among the educated reading public. Two important episodes of Manzoni’s reception in Victorian England can be mentioned: two reviews by Mary Shelley, who was influenced by the issues of the Italian Risorgimento (not totally sympathetic with Manzoni); a novel by Charlotte Yonge, the novelist of the Oxford movement, who admired Manzoni’s "Promessi sposi" for its Christian values. In the United States, the merits of Manzoni’s work were acknowledged by Emerson and Margaret Fuller, who showed interest and consideration for the contemporary Italian culture.

Full textThis thesis proposes a survey of the main forces determining the constitution of the Poetics that guide the trajectory of the contemporary Italian writer Alessandro Baricco, as a novelist, an essayist and a sagacious intellectual in our century. We note that, from the corpus of novels and essays chosen to analyze here, the author emphasizes the instability of narrating and perceiving, reflected clearly in the various intertextual dialogues that he creates. Therefore the intertextuality, as one of his fictional procedures conceived and transfigured by the author, is closely linked to a conception of the world that promotes the removal of certainties, the praise of orality and narrative (inexhaustible sources of life) the multiplicity of points of view, the exaltation of the marginalized characters, the heroism of defeat, the emphasis of the fall and the resignation. In order to demonstrate how it works, our study guides are basically from the following topics: a) the genesis of intertextuality in Baricco b) the intertextual relations and possible approaches between some of his works as well as dialogues with other authors (such as Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad, Rainer Maria Rilke, José Saramago and Paul Auster), c) the post-modern tendency, emphasized mainly on his essays.

Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here.

Full textContemporary thought may go back over itself to master thought or not. Thus a double use of language's experiences becomes possible: the complexity and the immanence of language in itself. Three possible determinations of thought reality are going to be involved: objectivity and exteriority, that belong to the thought's first attitude, and immanence. “Poetic and non-poetic” is the problem of mastering immanence by the poetic and of questioning the poetic by the non-poetic according to the uses of language. This entails a thinking of passage from a thought of a first kind to a thought of a second one, linked up in three moments: the poetic, the non-poetic, and the completion of passage, as a formal and material stand. The completed passage implies that immanence may not be questioned inside the poetic and the non-poetic. To accept or not the questioning of immanence distinguishes between philosophy and non-philosophy

Full textDr. Raffaella’s Battaglini’s work was born as an ideal completion of Professor Langella's essay "Manzoni poeta teologo". The present essay is evidently threefold: the critical review at the beginning functions almost as a way - we might even say a pretext – to find the right methodological approach for the entire work. The biographical overview is focused on the knots of Manzoni’s conversion on one hand, and of his Jansenism on the other. A sort of status quaestionis of Manzoni’s Jansenism is presented in the Second Chapter. The final stylistic analysis – which was initially supposed to appear at the beginning of the essay – has undoubtedly great qualities and reveals Dr. Raffaella Battaglini’s talent. The monographic study of the simile summarizes and revives many of the remarks (Trompeo, Petrocchi, Cerisola, Raimondi can be quoted among others) that the critical corpus about Manzoni has often pointed out but not always fully developped. The approach to the text is easy without being ingenuous, the remarks are always thoughtful, the prose is fluent and lively. The final appendix about simile, patiently composed, happily fulfills a literary whole contemplari et aliis contemplata tradere.

Full textThis study aims to rebuild the fortunes of the figure of Alexander the Great in the Early Italian literature. An innovative job which stems from a threefold need: defining the landscape of 'alexandrine literature' in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth century; tracing the movement of sources concerning the figure of the Macedonian; proposing a documentary synthesis about works familiar and unfamiliar. In order to understand how one of the brightest symbols of classical culture is assimilated and reshaped by Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio, and a large group of prose writers, poets, writers of chronicles and treatises, may allow you to see with greater clarity some lines of demarcation of the cultural horizon culture of the Italian Middle Ages. The intention, therefore, is underlining a hidden aspect of the connection between texts. The documenta have been submitted to the scrutiny of some interpretive joints that permit the reconstruction of the 'channels' traffic and usage patterns, such as to define a broader framework that includes classical and 'minor' works. The introduction outlines the textual history of Alexander the Great: from the clichés of the Pseudo-Callistene – an anthology of stories collected and edited in Alexandria of Egypt around a century after the death of 'leader-king' - to his Latin translators, to romance literatures. Within this rich corpus, western and eastern, forced to remakes and revisions, a landmark is certainly determined dall'Historia de Preliis by Leone Archpriest, written in Naples in mid-century X. The first chapter focuses on L’Intelligenza, the poem in which the Macedonian is the main character from the 216th stanza to 238th one, and highlights the contamination of the Latin source, through other connections with the Roman d'Alexandre of Alexandre de Paris. The second chapter outlines the borders of the field with the Libro di Varie Storie, the eccentric work by Antonio Pucci, unique in its pregnancy – quantitative but also qualitative – on the subject matter, derived dall'Historia de Preliis but with a broadening of perspective on the type of treatment from other sources that seems quite original. In the third chapter, Il Milione of Marco Polo and The Dittamondo of Fazio degli Uberti are analyzed on the basis of interesting tangents that attempt to describe the joints of orality and writing in the expression of authorship. In the next chapter, after an assessment of the emerging new models of the Humanism, We propose some examples that range from text fabula and historia, in an extremely rich landscape; jump through chronological and thematic evidence, analyzing such works as Il Novellino and Il Convivio, L’Avventuroso Siciliano of Bosone da Gubbio and Il Trecentonovelle of Sacchetti, Lo Specchio di vera penitenza di Jacopo Passavanti and the Fiorita of Armannino from Bologna, the novels of Boccaccio, Il Tesoretto of Brunetto Latini and Guittone d'Arezzo, poems by Pucci, Cino from Pistoia and Paul dell’Aquila, to come to the treatments offered by the historiographical background to Dante's Monarchia and Petrarch's De viris illustribus: works, the last one, which presents itself as the keystone of the passage that leads from the medieval allegorization to the model of large-scale, so common in the Renaissance. In the fifth and final chapter, the materials are analyzed for their structured around some basic conceptual isotopies that highlight the ethical aspect of the analysis medieval about the hero, mainly characterized by the 'pride' and 'liberal'. The substantial appendix contains the textual tranches found during the counting of the documents, ordered according to chronological criteria. The framework outlined – that aspires to completeness criteria without claiming to be exhaustive – even if it contains few traces of originality, in relation to the production of the novels written in Europe during the twelfth century, reveals a very significant aspect: in the 'point of origin 'of the Italian literature, the figure of Macedonian is one of the symbols that keep free from the wreck of classical culture the founding characters of the ancient historical debate, proving to hoard medieval encyclopedism models.

This study analyzes, in the contemporary Italian writer Alessandro Baricco's narrative Novecento: un monologue, the establishment of a suspension in which it is possible to narrate, to tell stories. That suspension is created by the protagonist Novecento, a pianist who has lived his whole life on a ship and knows the world by means of its passengers' narratives, which resonate in his music and in the narrative of his own story, imparted to his friend Tim, the character-narrator of the plot. Based mainly on Walter Benjamin's studies, we consider the poverty of experience to which man has been subjected in modernity, the need to think History from a questioning point of view and the possibility of resistance through the act of telling stories. Novecento is the being who makes possible a "resonance" (in the sense given by Jean Luc-Nancy) through which narratives can be heard, shared and circulated.

Abstract: This work proposes the apresentation of a group of elements from de "State doutrine" presented at Passerin D'Entreves (1902-1985) work, from perspectives that are able to justifie his proximity to Hannah Arendt (1906-1975), aiming to find ways of comprehension of political concepts and categories as distinct facts or phenomenons of violence. The way how D'Entreves enunciates his notion of State, comprehended as the triple articulation of the strength, power and authority, result of a singular work of analisis and interpretation of the tradition of the occidental political thought, was indicated by Hannah Arendt as the only political theory that corroborate her own distinction between power and violence. We are going to research among these authors' work part of the references of traditional thought, seeking to rescue at theirs texts this distinction and the possibilities to think the politics against violence. We conclude that, although working with various experiments and analysis, the authors establish a common perspective that allows the understanding of politics as a distinct phenomenon of violence and linked to freedom, even in the minds of each of these authors, the notion and grounds of liberty are distinctly conceptualized

Full textThe research is an in-depth study about the relationship between word and thought in Alessandro Manzoni. It has been structured in two different parts: the first part, mainly theoretic, called la parola nel pensiero, where is clearly defined Manzoni’s Weltanschauung about this theme, the second part, basically practical, called il pensiero nella parola, concerning the textual analysis of the literary and the philosophical works by Manzoni. On the one side, after clarifying the foundation of the philosophical reflections by Manzoni, the essential contents of his thought and the important role of the linguistic thinking inside them, the last deep speculative aspects related to the language and the word have been investigated. On the other side, Manzoni’s reflection “la parola offre intuiti al pensiero” and “estende la cognizione” has been the starting point to review the literary works not only like simple forms of previous ideas but also like a breeding ground for thought. It’s interesting to notice that the literary pages offering “intuiti al pensiero”, come before and exemplify the philosophical ones and at the same time, thanks to the philosophical speculations, they gain depth inside an innovative hermeneutic circle which considers the literary word “rivelativa” a fundamental moment of the creative and cognitive process by Manzoni, opening the way for further studies.
