Abstract:
Visual artists, designers, composers, photographers, poets, and choreographers were vital participants in the Bennington School of the Dance, which ran on the Bennington College campus in Bennington, Vermont, from 1934–1942 with one year, 1939, spent at Mills College in California. Collaborations were an integral component of the school, occurring between faculty and staff members as well as between students and faculty/staff. Of particular importance were the collaborations between musicians (including Louis Horst, Gregory Tucker, Norman Lloyd, and Alex North) and choreographers (including Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman). These collaborations influenced the direction of American modern dance, which was establishing itself with new breath as a form that could express American life and traditions without necessarily drawing upon European composers to do so.

Abstract:
This article was constructed from the analysis of ninety-nine productions of the National Institute of Educational Cinema (INCE), Brazil, between 1936 and 1945. I chose this historical cut because of the vast production of films that occurred in the period that, not for is compatible with the great state investment in education and political propaganda that marked the Estado Novo. For the greater understanding of the nature of the cinematographic narratives, appear in the text aspects of the creation of the Institute analyzed in the light of the administrative management of the Vargas government. The debates and circulation of ideas regarding the use of cinema in the service of education are also part of the present study, as well as the emphasis on the methodological necessity of categorizing the ninety - nine narratives analyzed, in order to map their themes and approaches. It is emphasized that the aim of the systematization was to understand the variety and richness of those productions in order to solve doubts about the nature of INCE and its attempts. In the course of this article I will deal with some of these specific films, since, through them, it was possible to identify indications of the attempts made by the Brazilian State, influenced by the education of the masses.ResumoO artigo que segue foi construído a partir da análise de noventa e nove produções do Instituto Nacional de Cinema Educativo (INCE), compreendidas entre 1936 até 1945. Optei por esse recorte histórico em virtude da vasta produção de filmes ocorrida no período que, não por acaso, é compatível com o grande investimento estatal em educação e propaganda política que marcaram o Estado Novo. Para a maior compreensão da natureza das narrativas cinematográficas do órgão, constam no texto aspectos da criação do Instituto analisados à luz da gestão administrativa do governo Vargas. Os debates e circulação de ideias a respeito do emprego do cinema a serviço da educação, também fazem parte do presente estudo, bem como o destaque à necessidade metodológica de categorização das noventa e nove narrativas analisadas, com o intuito de viabilizar a pesquisa, mapeando temas e abordagens. Ressalta-se que o objetivo da sistematização foi compreender a variedade e riqueza daquelas produções com o intuito de sanar dúvidas sobre a natureza do INCE e seus intentos.ResumenEl artículo fue construido a partir del análisis de noventa y nueve producciones del Instituto Nacional de Cine Educativo (INCE), Brasil, comprendidas entre 1936 hasta 1945. Se resalta que el objetivo de la sistematización fue comprender la variedad y riqueza de aquellas producciones con el propósito de sanar dudas sobre la naturaleza del INCE y sus intentos. Abstract. Ralph B. Peck (1912–2008), graduate and doctor of philosophy in civil engineering (1934 and 1937 respectively) from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was one of the major contributors to the development of geotechnics in the twentieth century. Born in Winnipeg (Manitoba) as an American national, he was influenced from childhood by the world of civil engineering through his father, Orwin K. Peck, who was a civil engineer, mainly as a structural engineer in the railway sector. In the absence of job offers as a structural engineer, Ralph Peck arrived at Harvard University in 1938 to attend the soil mechanics courses taught by Arthur Casagrande, which guided Peck's professional career towards geotechnics. In addition to Casagrande, Peck had the opportunity to meet and work with other very important people related to geotechnics: Albert E. Cummings, Laurits Bjerrum, Alec W. Skempton and especially Karl Terzaghi, with whom he established a great friendship, in addition to providing support, professional advice and performing important work, such as the Chicago Subway Works. Peck actively dedicated himself to consulting work, which led him to visit 44 states within the United States and 28 countries on five continents. In addition, he also participated in research work where he was asked and was a committed lecturer at the University of Illinois, where he was a professor for 32 years. The objective of this paper is to analyse, through Peck's biography, his contribution to the field of geotechnics based on his research, teaching and consultancy work, and through the influence of Peck on other important people in the field, such as Karl Terzaghi.

Ce mémoire de thèse étudie les projets architecturaux effectués au cours des années soixante-dix par des artistes venant de Tchécoslovaquie et de Pologne, deux pays de l'Europe centrale, dépendants à l'époque de l'U. R. S. S. En se référant aux œuvres des artistes des avant-gardes radicales du début du XXe siècle, mariant souvent les formes architecturales avec des visions utopiques de la société du futur, les trois artistes dont les projets sont étudiés – Alex Mlynarcik, Jozef Jankovic, et Tadeusz Kantor – utilisent l'architecture pour parler de la société de l'époque. C'est à travers le langage architectural qu'ils reprennent dans leurs dessins, gravures et photocollages, que ces trois artistes redéfinissent le rôle de l'artiste dans les pays du bloc de l'Est. Ils donnent une vision dystopique du monde de l'époque, ils créent des visions de la société alternatives, ou encore ils effectuent des projets de décomposition de l'espace public, qui est, durant cette période, entièrement contrôlé par le pouvoir étatique. Ces projets leur permettent de contester le régime ou leur propre condition sociale, et de s'opposer à la propagande idéologique de l'Etat communiste, tout en échappant à la censure. C'est donc un travail concentré uniquement sur des visions d'architecture, faites par des plasticiens qui, de différentes manières, utilisent le langage architectural pour adapter des stratégies, dans les trois cas différentes, envers le système social dans lequel se déroula leur quotidien.

Resumo: A Arte se redescobre, hoje, como substrato privilegiado das culturas humanas e como testemunha de suas diversas expressões e representações. Paralelamente, a Antropologia (visual, em especial) se dá conta de que as imagens não existem sem nosso imaginário e que, por sua vez, as sociedades não poderiam emergir sem as artes. É neste horizonte que, ao lado de autores como Hans Belting, Alfred Gell e, principalmente, Georges Didi- Huberman (exegeta privilegiado do pai da iconologia moderna, Aby Warburg), pretendemos participar de um questionamento mais amplo sobre o papel das Artes (e das imagens) em uma reconfiguração do discurso antropológico. É a partir deste pano de fundo, interativo e vivencial, que procuramos investigar as obras de Alex Flemming. Com ele, tratou-se de repensar as dimensões políticas das imagens e aprender a reconhecer o que elas dizem sobre nossa condição humana no mundo contemporâneo
Abstract: Art rediscovers itself, today, as a privileged substract of human cultures and as witness of their diverse expressions and representations. In parallel, Anthropology (especially Visual Anthropology) finds that images do not exist without our imaginary and, in its turn, societies could not emerge without the arts. It is through these horizons that, among other authors such as Hans Belting, Alfred Gell and, mainly, Georges Didi-Huberman (privileged exegete of the father of modern iconology, Aby Warburg); we intend to participate in a wider questioning about the role of the Arts (and images) in a reconfiguration of the anthropological speech. It is from this interactive and experience based starting point that we investigate the work of Alex Flemming. With him, we seek to rethink the political dimensions of images and learn to recognize what they say about our human condition in the contemporary world

Abstract:
The thesis shows the first monographs of Aleix Clapés and Manuel Sayrach, two important individuals of Catalonian culture, whose works were developed between 1880 and 1937; a long period which saw many importan historical events take place which were reflected in their work. These works on their merit alone, deserve a level of careful attention which they have never before received . This is the principal jusfitication of this thesis and the core reason why both bodies of work have been united within the scope of a single study. But there are other important parallels between them : Originality, anachronism, stylish ambiguity and extravagance; common characteristichs that allow us to understand a priori the problems faced by historians when trying to classify and interpret these works : They are such outsiders of the traditional catalogue of modern style that they are paid little attention. Nevertheless, there is another important connection between them : Antoni Gaudi. Competitor, close friend and colleague in important projects for Clapés; while for Sayrach, a mythical and inspirational figure , against whom he contrasted his works and architectural theories.lf we consider the difficulty with which the extraordinarily creative output of Gaudi was taken on board by the traditionally conservative local historiography, then the works of Clapés and Sayrach, being so close both formally and ideologically to those of Gaudi come up against a similar, but even greater, problem in that is not easy to place into the historiography of Catalonian art works that, while eccentric, are also "inferior" to those of Gaudi. For this reason , our theory distances its elf from the conventions of the traditional discourse of modernism with the ¡ntention of getting closer to the historical truth. This new perspective allows the works and their authors to be truly considered artistic productions of great value and worthy of protection. The abundance of mentions and commentaries about Clapés' work in the contemporary press demonstrates that our initial hypotesis was correct: Clapés' place in history is merely a pale shadow of the real individual in his time and in his world . On the other hand , ¡nterest is awakened more and more in "casa Sayrach", the main work of Sayrach which highlights the disconnect between the role given to him by history and the authentic dimension of the individual. Aleix Clapés (1846-1920) and Manuel Sayrach (1886-1937) were born and died in the province of Barcelona. They followed different reative, literary and cultural activities . Aleix Clapés with his pictures , advanced the local syrnbolism and he can be considered expressionist avant la lettre. The preflerence that Eusebi Güell and Pere Mila gave to his pictorial work, expresses de high esteem in which he was held by the Catalonian bourgeois. Clapés also designed the furniture for the entrance and living room for the Ibarz family (1902), the most powerful and beautiful of Catalonian syrnbolism, and in addition , bought and ran the influential magazine publication "Hispania" in its second period (1903). Manuel Sayrach, received the title of architect in 1917, when he had already reformed the family retreat known as "La Torre dels dimonis" (Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Barcelona , 1909-1913) and when he was finishing building the "casa Sayrach" (Barcelona, 1914-1918). Some years later, Sayrach built the "casa Montserrat" (Barcelona , 1926). He also conceived a dramatic project: "Els drames de la llum", from this project Sayrach published "Abelard i Eloïsa" (1919) and "Reigzel" (1920). He entered the field of political ideology with his work "República i Constitució" (1931).

Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o projeto colonizador particular da Empresa de Coloniza??o Dr. Herrmann Meyer e a sua implementa??o no complexo colonial, sob os aspectos cultural, econ?mico e social, nas primeiras d?cadas do s?culo XX, na regi?o Noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Trata-se de uma empresa de capital estrangeiro, com sede em Leipzig, Alemanha, de propriedade do Dr. Herrmann Meyer, s?cio-propriet?rio do Instituto Bibliogr?fico daquela cidade, que tinha como prop?sito formar uma col?nia ?tnica alem?, a-confessional, proporcionando o suporte necess?rio para que imigrantes e colonos alcan?assem um r?pido desenvolvimento econ?mico e social, oferecendo assist?ncia religiosa e educacional, bem como a possibilidade de se tornarem propriet?rios de um lote colonial. Era um empreendimento com fins lucrativos, mas, ao mesmo tempo, pretendia-se diferenciado em rela??o a similares pelo seu trabalho cultural em prol da manuten??o da germanidade, ponto ressaltado pela propaganda. Delimita-se como espa?o de estudo um complexo colonial localizado nos munic?pios de Cruz Alta (col?nia Neu-W?rttemberg, hoje munic?pios de Panambi e Condor) e Palmeira das Miss?es (col?nias Xingu, Erval Seco, respectivamente, munic?pios de Novo Xingu e Erval Seco; posse Boi Preto, atual distrito do munic?pio de Chapada), no per?odo entre 1897, quando a empresa iniciou a compra de terras, e 1932, ano que marca o encerramento oficial das suas atividades, em virtude do falecimento de seu propriet?rio. Para a realiza??o da pesquisa e o tratamento das fontes, buscou-se aporte te?rico-metodol?gico na micro-hist?ria. Assim, trata-se de um estudo de (i)migra??o e coloniza??o, vinculado ? nova hist?ria cultural.

A presente tese estabelece um confronto entre dois textos liter?rios: Os novos sofrimentos do jovem W. (1973), de Ulrich Plenzdorf, e Vermelho (2001), de Uwe Timm, o primeiro da antiga RDA e o segundo da Alemanha Ocidental, embora escrito e publicado ap?s a reunifica??o. Eles retratam o conflito da juventude com a gera??o dos pais e a sociedade por volta de 1968. Apesar de contextos supostamente opostos ideologicamente, economia de mercado e Socialismo, constatam-se v?rias semelhan?as no percurso dessas gera??es dos dois lados da Cortina de Ferro. O narrador de Os novos sofrimentos do jovem W. faz seu relato ap?s a morte enquanto o de Vermelho (2001) repassa sua vida nos vagos instantes entre acidente e morte. Suas narrativas resultam em um balan?o de vida que apresenta as gera??es do s?culo XX em ambos os estados alem?es e as rela??es entre elas. A op??o dos autores por uma perspectiva post mortem ? justificada pelas vantagens ret?ricas que a voz de um morto oferece junto ao leitor: a autoridade de quem concluiu a vida e possui experi?ncia a transmitir aos que ficam.

O presente trabalho aborda os efeitos da Primeira Guerra Mundial na cidade de Porto Alegre. Sendo um evento cuja repercuss?o tem recebido pouca aten??o da historiografia brasileira, este trabalho pretende trazer alguma contribui??o para o estudo da influ?ncia desse conflito sobre a condu??o da pol?tica interna e sobre as rela??es sociais naquela cidade. A base sobre a qual se sustenta est? constitu?da pela documenta??o produzida pelo governo da municipalidade e pelo governo do estado, bem como por informa??es extra?das das p?ginas de diferentes peri?dicos publicados na cidade entre os anos de 1914 e 1918. Mais especificamente, busca-se entender o quanto o conflito mundial afetou a conviv?ncia dos habitantes de origem germ?nica com os demais, algo que imp?e a considera??o da turbulenta trajet?ria da imigra??o germ?nica no estado do Rio Grande do Sul e a opini?o cr?tica de alguns importantes intelectuais brasileiros que questionavam os benef?cios da mesma para a constru??o de uma na??o. Abstract:
Malgré l’amélioration du régime des droits de propriété intellectuelle (DPI) en Chine après l’accession de celle-ci à l’Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC) en 2001, la question relative aux DPI demeure l’un des « sujets de vive préoccupation » dans le commerce sino-européen. Selon la stratégie européenne visant à assurer le respect des DPI dans les pays tiers, adoptée en 2005 et renouvelée en 2014, la Chine est ciblée par la Commission européenne comme le premier pays tiers dans lequel les autorités locales ne prennent pas de mesure efficace pour s’attaquer aux problèmes de violations des DPI. En raison des enjeux politiques et économiques importants pour l’UE, son intervention est nécessaire pour améliorer le régime des DPI et l’environnement de l’investissement en Chine. L’analyse de l’action extérieure de l’UE s’appuie sur l’étude des instruments auxquels elle recourt en vue de renforcer la protection et le respect des DPI en Chine. L’objet de notre recherche est d’examiner la manière dont l’Union choisit d’exploiter les instruments à géométrie variable au sein des enceintes multilatérale et bilatérale. Deux axes distincts mais complémentaires orientent la mise en œuvre de l’action extérieure de l’UE vis-à-vis de la Chine : l’approche coopérative, d’une part, et de l’approche conventionnelle, d’autre part. L’approche coopérative vise d’abord à rapprocher le régime juridique chinois des standards les plus élevés du droit de l’UE. En dépit d’un certain nombre de difficultés limitant l’efficacité de l’action extérieure de l’UE, la coopération bilatérale avec la Chine permet de contribuer à l’amélioration du régime juridique chinois. La convergence normative devrait ensuite faciliter l’apparition d’une approche commune entre l’UE et la Chine sur le plan conventionnel. Il importe à cet égard de souligner la position divergente de la Chine face à la promotion de l’UE, par la voie conventionnelle, d’un renforcement de la protection et du respect des DPI. Malgré la convergence accrue des positions européenne et chinoise favorables à la protection « ADPIC-plus » des DPI, la Chine se montre réticente voire hostile envers les initiatives conventionnelles de l’UE tendant à renforcer les mesures relatives au respect des DPI
Despite the improvement of China’s intellectual property rights (IPR) regime after this country’s World Trade Organization (WTO) accession in 2001, the IPR remains one of “major concerns” in Sino-European trade relation. According to European strategy for the enforcement of intellectual property rights in third countries, adopted in 2005 and renewed in 2014, China is identified by the European Commission as first priority country, in which the local authority does not take effective measures to tackle the problems caused by IPR violations. Taking into account the EU’s important political and economic concerns, his action is necessary in order to improve the IPR regime and the investment environment in China. The analysis of EU’s external action is based on the instruments used to strengthen IPR’s protection and enforcement in China. The purpose of our research is to examine the EU’s method to use the different instruments within the multilateral and bilateral fora. Two distinct but complementary axes orientate the undertaking of EU’s external action vis-à-vis China: cooperative approach, on the one hand, and the conventional approach, on the other hand. Firstly, the cooperative approach aims to bring Chinese legal system closer to higher standards in EU law. In spite of certain difficulties limiting the efficacy of EU external action, the bilateral cooperation with China can contribute to a better legal system in China. Then, the normative convergence should be able to facilitate the emergence of a common approach between the EU and China in the conventional framework. In this respect, it is important to emphasis Chinese divergent position with regard to EU’s conventional approach aiming to strengthen IPR protection and enforcement. Despite the increasing convergence of European and Chinese positions favorable toward “TRIPs-plus” protection, China seems reluctant even hostile to EU’s conventional initiatives intending to strengthen IPR enforcement measures

Abstract:
This Project Work aims to discuss and understand the importance of typography in visual arts and its relationship with the emerging cultural movements of the 20th Century. It starts with an analysis of the early decades, and the appearance of so-called modern typography, as well as the use of collage techniques in artistic works. Following that, the discussion moves on to the advent of typographic poetry and its contribution to the renewal of the art of writing during this period, especially in what regards the transformation of language into image; also, the cultural phenomena affected at the end of the century by the inclusion of typography in contemporary art will be under analysis. One of the main theses of this Work supports the idea of combining elements, using verbal and visual codes, and reflecting on artistic movements, and their historical origins, that involve the universes of collage, typographic poetry and arts. This is done by observing and studying how the ideologies of the beginning of the century tended to break paradigms, something borne fruit from the need for a socio-political and cultural redefinition, a factor that became a mainstay thereon in the practice of art, and ended up infiltrating and reshaping several artistic, with typography as a fundamental guideline with which to legitimize these new trends. Finally, after completion of the theoretical research, a practical physical project will be carried out and presented, in which some intervention typographic and prints techniques applied on paper and fabric. The will culminate in an exhibition of works created during the graduate research period, representing an empirical proof of concept that will serve as a proper conclusion of the work presented here.

This chapter flips the book’s analysis and looks at the ‘unionism’ of the Scottish National Party, which after 1942 supported the secession of Scotland from the UK. A speech made by Alex Salmond in 2013 is used as a means of examining different strands of the party’s unionism following its formation in 1934. First was the SNP’s attachment to some form of supra-national authority, initially the British Empire and later the European Union; second was defence co-operation via NATO; third was a form of monetary union as advocated by the Scottish Government during the 2012-14 referendum campaign; fourth was a long-standing SNP commitment to the 1603 Union of the Crowns, or retention of the Queen as head of state in an independent Scotland; and fifth was what Alex Salmond called a ‘social union’ between the ‘peoples of these islands’.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie międzynarodowych kongresów działaczek organizacji kobiecych jako narzędzi w komunikacji międzynarodowej, a także jako wydarzeń kluczowych dla poszerzania transnarodowej sieci kontaktów między aktywistkami i budowania kanałów transferu treści programowych ruchu kobiecego do narodowych przestrzeni dyskursu na temat kwestii kobiecej. Kongresy były wyrazem dojrzałości środowiska aktywistek. Nadanie im charakteru międzynarodowego w 1878 r. miało służyć ukazaniu kwestii kobiecej jako istotnego problemu wymagającego rozwiązania. Początkowo taki charakter miały tylko z nazwy. Dopiero te, które współorganizowała założona w 1888 r. Międzynarodowa Rada Kobiet w rzeczywistości zbierały działaczki z szeregu państw należących co zachodnioeuropejskiego kręgu cywilizacyjnego. Sprzyjała temu nie tylko organizacja Rady oparta na kryterium narodowym (państwowym), ale także jej umiarkowany program. Transferowany poprzez prasę, osobiste kontakty, publikacje, korespondencję czy wykłady uczestniczek zjazdów mobilizował lokalne działaczki, wskazywał kierunki i formy aktywności.

The development, from concept to hardware of a lean-premixed two-stage combustor for small gas turbine engines is presented. This Annular Low Emission Combustor (ALEC) is based on a patent of R.J. Mowill. Emission characteristics of several prototypes of this combustor under a variety of conditions are presented. It is shown that ultra-low NOx levels (< 10 ppm) can be reached with satisfactory CO levels (< 50 ppm).

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kurucusu olarak ülke toprakları üzerinde yaşayan bütün halkı Türk halkı olarak adlandırmıştır. Müslüman ya da gayrimüslim olduğuna bakılmaksızın bütün ahaliye eşit yaklaşılmasını istemiştir. Laiklik ilkesi ile birlikte Türkiye’de yaşayan gayrimüslimlerden olan Süryaniler de kendilerini güvende ve laikliğin garantisi altında hissetmişlerdir. Bu güven duygusuyla birlikte Türkiye’de yaşayan diğer gayrimüslim gruplardan farklı olarak Süryanilerin genelinde devlete bağlılık duygusu oluşmuştur. Din adamları aracılığıyla her fırsatta devlete ve devlet başkanı olarak Atatürk’e bağlılık ve sadakat bildiren Süryanileri zaman içerisinde diğer gayrimüslim milletlerde olduğu gibi kendi menfaatleri uğruna kullanmak isteyenler olmuşsa da Kadim Süryaniler, bu çağrılara uzun süre kulak asmamışlardır. Özellikle 1917-1932 yılları arasında Patriklik yapan ve Türkiye’de görev yapan son patrik olma özelliğini taşıyan III. İlyas Şakir Efendi döneminde ilişkiler yoğunlaşmıştır. Lozan Antlaşması sırasında Atatürk’ün huzuruna çıkarak Azınlık haklarını istemediklerini belirten Patrik İlyas Şakir Efendi’nin bu tutumu kendilerini bağlı bulundukları devletten ayrı görmemeleri adına oldukça önemlidir. Musul Meselesi ve Şeyh Sait İsyanına kadar olumlu giden ilişkiler, bu olaylarla birlikte İngiliz kışkırtmalarına alet olmuş ve bu sürecin sonunda, patrikhane Mardin’den Suriye’nin Humus şehrine, ardından da Şam’a taşınmıştır. Cumhuriyetin ilanı ile birlikte yapılan çağdaşlaşma hareketlerine de Süryaniler destek vermiş, bu yenilik hareketlerine çabuk uyum sağlamış, yenilikleri benimsemiş ve uygulayıcısı olmuşlardır. Özellikle sosyal hayata dair yapılan yeniliklerin destekçisi olmalarının yanı sıra bu yeniliklerin Süryani cemaati içerisindeki diğer insanlar tarafından da tanınmasını sağlamışlardır. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kuruluş yıllarındaki bütün bu olumlu gelişmelere rağmen 20. yüzyıl boyunca farklı zamanlarda yurtdışına göç etmiş ve oralarda diaspora oluşturmuş olan bazı Süryanilerin, Ermenilerle ortak bir tarih yaratma çabaları da batılı devletlerin Türkiye üzerindeki emelleri çerçevesinde devam etmektedir. Hristiyan bir cemaat olmasından dolayı Süryaniler, 20. yüzyılın başlarından itibaren Anadolu’da yaşayan diğer gayrimüslim gruplarda olduğu gibi Avrupalı büyük devletlerin ilgisini çekmiş ve bu durum, onların da misyonerlik faaliyetlerinden etkilenmelerini beraberinde getirmiştir.
