In this article we discuss a coin hoard found in the Belgorod fortress on the Dniester River (Ukraine). It was detected during archaeological investigations led by L.D. Dmitrov in 1946. It was found outside the fortress, on its glacis, as part of excavation site “A”. Until recently the hoard was unknown in the numismatic literature. At the moment of discovery, the hoard was composed of 34 coins (according to excavation diary kept in the archive of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). ABSTRACTCaptain William Adams (1837–1890) was one of the exceptional whaling masters who sailed from Dundee in Scotland. This paper uses primary sources to confirm his reputation not only as a whaler but also as an adventurous explorer and wealthy businessman. He became outstandingly successful with Alexander Stephen & Sons, the Dundee shipping company that pioneered the use of auxiliary powered vessels for use in sealing in Labrador and fishing for whales in the Davis Strait and beyond. His first command was the Arctic in 1868, and his reputation was such that he was chosen by Albert Hast

Alexander, the son and – first – heir of Stephen III the Great of Moldavia, remains a highly controversial figure. Officially, he died on 26 July 1496, whilst with the host. The reports sent from Hungary to Stephen’s ally, Maximilian I of Habsburg (prior to 22-24 August 1496), and – most importantly – to his royal councillor Johannes Fuchsmagen (14 July 1496), show however that Alexander died at least a month earlier. He probably died on 26 June, as recorded in one of the chronicles of the Putna Monastery, Stephen’s necropolis, but not the burial place of Alexander (who was laid to rest at the

The Grand Dukes repeatedly met with one of the most authoritative bishops of their time in 1851–1867, but their visits were not concerned with the spiritual pursuits, but rather resembled secular visits. In recent years a consensus has emerged that the Testament of Moses is to be dated in the early first century c.e., at least in its final form, and the primary basis for that consensus is the apparently perfect match between the reference to a ruler ruling for 34 years and the years of the reign of Herod the Great. While acknowledging that much can be explained on that presupposition, I have sought to show that a fit equally as strong as with Herod may be found when chapter 6 is read as alluding to the reign of Alexander Janneus and Alexandra Salome. Within the league table of thirteenth-century English bishops, Master Alexander ‘de Stavensby’ has generally been considered no more than a second division player. The standard biographies do their best to credit him with a network of associations that includes such luminaries as St Dominic and Stephen Langton, but the evidence is uncertain, or at least has never been probed sufficiently deeply to achieve certainty. This thesis argues that there is an enigma at the heart of Webster's The Duchess of Malfi; a disjunction between the critical history of the play and its reception in performance. Historical disquiet about the status of the play among academics and cultural commentators has not prevented its popularity with audiences. It has, however, affected some of the staging decisions made by theatre companies mounting productions. Allied to other practical factors, these have impacted significantly – and occasionally disastrously – upon performances. It is argued that Webster conceived the play as a medi

This dissertation examines the political origins of Loyalism in New York City between 1768 and 1778. Anchored by an analysis of political mobilization, this dissertation is structured into two parts. Part I has two chapters. Using a variety of private and public sources, the first chapter analyses how 9,338 mostly white male Loyalists in New York City and the counties of Kings, Queens, Suffolk and Westchester were mobilized. Chapter 1 argues that elites and British forces played a fundamental role in the broad-based mobilization of Loyalists in the province of New York. It also recognises that

In different ways, they are actually critiques of the rage for neoclassicism. Much of what Rimmer was trying to do is conveyed in his teaching, and he used his exhibited art as an extension of this. He wanted an art based not on copying from antique casts or from life but, rather, on the artist's own imagination so that the work is self-expressive. His failure there led to Theban intervention in Macedonian affairs and then his assassination. It examines claims that Eurydice married his assassin and had a hand in his death.
