Strasdin, Kate. "Fashioning Alexandra : a sartorial biography of Queen Alexandra 1844-1925." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2014. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/366831/.

Abstract:
In the second half of the 19th century, Alexandra Princess of Wales and later Queen Consort to her husband Edward VII became one of the most recognizable women of the period. Her image was circulated around the globe by the million and her every movement recorded daily in The Times. Despite her contemporary celebrity, she has become a lesser-known figure in modern history. With little in the way of political influence, Alexandra recognized that her ppearance in public was powerful. She used clothes throughout her life to both display and disguise herself. despite the centrality of dress in her life, no other study has ever examined her remaining items of clothing until now. This thesis considers in detail those garments that have survived from Queen Alexandra’s wardrobe, most of which, owing to their geographic spread, have never been studied before. This object-led approach allows an analysis of a life, which has been considered before in more traditional biographies. However, the close examination of the garments and of Alexandra’s approach to her clothing reveals aspects never before considered. It has also prompted the consideration of previously under researched areas such as royal laundry, the role of the dresser and the logistics of 19th century royal travel. As a multi-disciplinary project it has shed new light onto Alexandra’s life and dispelled certain apocryphal stories which only the material culture itself could reveal.

Pyke, Toni. "'Reformed' men? : positioning masculinities in Alexandra township." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2017. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/66591/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the growing body of literature focusing on men and masculinity/ies, there is limited material that adequately explores the everyday experiences and specificities of being and living as a man in diverse social and cultural contexts. Furthermore, inadequate consideration is given to the unique ways in which men redefine, renegotiate and reconstruct their masculinities and multiple identities over time, or the challenges/limitations that they may experience during this process. More importantly, there is a lack of critical attention given to men’s agentic roles in supporting a vision for gender equality and social change. Considering men’s lived realities, subjectivities, the ways in which they redefine and reconstruct multiple masculinities and social identities across time and diverse social and cultural environments, has significant implications for studying and working with men in international human development contexts. In this thesis, I consider these dimensions within the context of township living. Through daily interactions with men in Alexandra township in Johannesburg, South Africa, I explore their subjective interpretations of what it means to be a man in this context and the ways in which change, specifically political, social and economic change, is experienced through their daily lives, their sense of self and their social relationships. I demonstrate that as men reflect on change, they struggle to renegotiate the parameters of their masculinities within a patriarchal context that is steadfast in its expectations of traditional gendered norms, alongside an absence of alternative masculine blueprints for transforming masculinities. Through self-reflection, peer group support and for some, access to gender-transformative workshops, some men are actively engaging with the change agenda and are exploring their lives and their future aspirations, and reconsidering what it means to be a man in the context of Alexandra township.

Biffis, G. "Cassandra and the female perspective in Lycophron's Alexandra." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1352826/.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst the majority of students of Lycophron’s Alexandra have come to the poem with a particular set of scholarly skills which have limited the thematic scope of their inquiry, the aim of this thesis, by contrast, is to argue that in the poem each detail is a piece of a puzzle, where only the sum of its parts conveys the full meaning of it. The present work is multi-disciplinary and aims to show that heterogeneous elements of the poem, traditionally belonging to different fields of study (literary, historical, archaeological), are in reality markedly interconnected according to patterns that reveal their meaning only when considered in their entirety. The interrelation of these aspects relays on a main unifying principle: the fact that the narrator is a woman. The thesis argues that Cassandra is a convincingly constructed character, and not a mere medium used to give coherence to the numerous stories and episodes that constitute the poem itself. Then, it focuses in particular on how the femininity of Cassandra determines several characteristic aspects of the poem: content selection, focalizing perspective, and the stylistic register in which the prophecy is uttered. The text requires us to consider all these different strands at once in order to appreciate the importance of the poem for the study of the literary presentation of womanhood in Greek culture. The thesis addresses the interaction between Cassandra’s narrative and the marked interest within the text in religious practices, in particular those relating to Cassandra herself. Lycophron’s poetics refers constantly to the world of myth and the past, while actively involving its imagined present readership and also future generations. In this respect the poem is in harmony with experiments, conducted by other Hellenistic poets, with the interaction of different temporal levels.

This research addresses the thought of Alexandra Kollontai: Russian Marxist and feminist author who stood out during the transitional socialist started with the Russian Revolution Proletarian October 1917, being the first woman to hold office with the highest levels of government, as Commissioner People's Welfare, to occupy the post of ambassador in several countries, and finally to receive the title of Minister Plenipotentiary, in Norway. Her feminist thinking became notable (and controversial object collisions) for proposing new sexual morality, to establish in the future communist society, founded on the principles of proletarian solidarity, camaraderie and community, as a means of promoting citizenship. Through detailed analysis from the perspective of Marxism, Kollontai conceives the question of women as a social issue, given the close link between the exploitation and oppression of women - in employment and in the family - and the capitalist economic system. As a way to ensure women's liberation, with their participation in the labor ranks on equal terms with men, Kollontai proposed socialization of housework and child care. Deepening the line of thought developed by Engels in The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, the author proposes the opening of the relationships between the sexes in the form of free union, which will run no longer necessarily the duty of exclusivity (or fidelity) and anticipates the future contours of the familiar form by defining it as proletarian universal family where there is no longer differentiate between children. Her notoriety is also seen as a result of its participation as a leader of the Workers' Opposition, faction created within the Central Committee of Communist Party of Bolsheviks during the transition regime, which flatly opposed to decisions made by party leaders, in particular, Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov (Lenin) and the paths taken in the course of the revolution.
